Boxy Pixel has a new aluminum shell for the Game Boy Color that makes it look more like a Game Boy Pocket. This is one of the most expensive Game Boy mods you can do.

The character arc from the Bob that complained about having to add roms via an USB or whatever to the Bob that is even soldering his own Game Boys is such a trip and I'm here for it
IKR
Love the video Bob, and thanks for the shout out 🙏! Build came out looking great! Cheers dude!
8:35 And that's why you watch the tutorial in full once or twice before you actually start anything, it's never let me down.
If the cartridges didn’t stick out the way they do, this would be perfect. Feels like an oversight.
That oversight honestly kills it for me. Otherwise nice design.
Would rather wait for a new version, or get the mod kit that allows you to fit the gbc board into a pocket shell.
I'm sure someone will make a smaller sized flashcard if there's enough demand
@@jeremym8748 That’d be nice but the main reason I’d want this is to play original cartridges.
"I can't think of a more premium Game Boy Color."
**Has an Analogue Pocket**
The Analogue Pocket looks and feels cheap even compared to a stock Gameboy. Yes, it’s expensive, if that’s what makes something “premium” to you, but it doesn’t look or feel nearly as good as Boxy’s stuff
@@SlickTater I highly disagree with it "looking cheap". It's got a sleek design, a high resolution screen, loads of features that you can't find anywhere else, and highly accurate FPGA "emulation" of not just GBA, GBC, and GB, but various other handheld devices. I put emulation in quotes because while it is technically emulating these devices, it does so in a way that cannot be compared to the emulation that you'd see on anything other than FPGA. I think that, plus the price tag basically matching this mod for a standard GBC, makes the Analogue Pocket's value and premium nature vastly superior.
I wouldn't consider the Analogue Pocket to be a gameboy. Especially a gameboy color of all things. Imagine putting a gb cartridge in a gameboy and being worried that you'd knock it out while playing/holding it because there's no vertical shielding lmao.
@@CockroachMunchingKrabbyPatty I was with your comment in the first sentence, but this is a bit ridiculous. Versatility comes at a price, but also, don't play with your $200+ handheld like a neanderthal. Wulff himself said he's never accidentally bumped it while playing or holding it, the worst he said is that using the bumpers was a bit uncomfortable and that he was rubbing against it, but this was immediately followed by him saying he never bumped the game out of the slot. I haven't seen anyone else mention that it's happened to them, and I was watching just about every channel I'm subbed to talking about it when it was new. Obviously it's not impossible, but if you're careful with your belongings, it shouldn't happen.
The second touch sensor is for other screens that have two. The one I use has one sensor for color pallets and one for brightness
I'd say for the funny playing screen you could also choose touch sensor location that suits you best
love how genuinely interested you sound regarding this! favorite kind of content from you Bob
The ads are always so funny, but it was a weird point "you love dragon quest on switch, NOW take it anywhere with you". Isn't that the whole point about having a switch tho?
Didn't expect to learn the fate of the Double screen SP today.
I’ve done this but kept in a replacement GBC shell. I also left out the touch sensors which simply keeps the brightness at max 100% of the time. This GBC feels like the most premium handheld I own other than the switch lite. For the next mod It would be cool to see the upcoming gba slate.
That’s a lot more of a process than I expected and it’s a lot more expensive as well but it does look really good 👀👍🏼 there’s something nice about having a smooth clean finish with the buttons. It’s a definite pass but seeing it in a video is cool.
It just takes time it isn't that difficult
@@anthonyp2312 I'm glad you believe in me, but, I'm really inept at these things.
I just saw this and didn't realize this was new untill I finished watching it
We’re getting wulff den soldering iron kits before we get hats
Watching the stream was fun, I wish I could've stayed till the end. The only thing I'd disagree is that this is a good mod for beginners. Not because of difficulty, it is beginner friendly, but because of cost, starting with a cheap project is my recommendation (cheapest project but not the cheapest equipment/tools)
I rushed to build one of these Color Pockets the first week Boxy Pixel released the shell. I was watching his social media like a hawk from the first day he announced he was going to be selling these shells. But I decided to take it a step further. Since aluminum doesn't allow light to bleed through it, I decided to go with flat buttons and install an RGB button lighting kit. Ho boy, that added way more complexity to the build as it changed a lot of tolerances. But the results are amazing, I absolutely love it.
Now, everyone complains about Boxy Pixel's build instructions, but I had no issue with them. I don't remember any mention of gluing the touch sensor in before soldering the wire to it. Maybe he's updated the instructions since I downloaded them, and he goofed them up some? I dunno.
And I also noticed that the power LED doesn't line up right, but I suspect that was intentional. The RGB kit I got also replaces the power LED, and I noticed that, if it lined up correctly, I'd have super bright LEDs hitting me in the eyes and the colors wouldn't mix, I'd be seeing the individual RGB filaments. By offsetting the LED hole, it allows the colors to blend before they come out of the shell. It worked out well in my favor.
I saw there's a new nintendo switch oled metal shell replacement, you could check that out
God that ad was so funny, I love your Ad blocks.
The metal gameboy game case is beautiful!! I'm def. going to be doing this mod in the near future
That is absolutely gorgeous!
I also enjoy watching you mod things, it's very interesting, even if it's something I'd never do myself (or maybe because of that?).
I remember as a kid one of the kids in our friend group got one of those hanging light accessories. Our minds were blown away by something as simple as a light to see what you were playing.
Within days every single one of us had one and ofc, I had the one with the worst light 😂
God this video was so pleasing
I’ve been hoarding Nintendo handhelds for years just waiting to know how to properly mod them. Now I know I want them METAL 🤩
Fun video. Game changer mods got me into doing these myself, and macho nacho guided me with my dmg, gbc, and gba systems.
Great video and thumbnail as always. I usually listen to videos at work and glance if something sounds interesting or like it needs a visual but I had to stop and watch the whole ad. Funny as always
I've got to mod me a Game Boy sometime soon.
I love these. I have one for the og GBA that I dust off here and there. Boxy Pixel makes such sick shells.
I love seeing all these game boy mods, and I’ve finally been inspired to mod my own GBA SP with the Xipher/Humble Bazooka Slab Remixed case
I did it and the feel is amazing! Now I am looking forward to the Slate (modding can be addicting)
Retro repair shop makes quality products I bought replacement battery for a gameboy micro from him and it was almost double the mah but still fit perfectly
Also good video Bob
I did think it was a Gameboy Pocket shell for a minute there. Had no idea that you could get metal cartridges, but this looks so clean!
OMG of course! Awesome mod. Love it and your UA-cam channel!
i like the way it looks. even the metal game cases.
Glad you got your soldering wick
Lol dude you need to uploads of just the ads, you’re making lore at this point
Keep bringing this amazing videos. Love your work man
Loved the video, reminded me to always watch a tutorial video at least once to get a general idea of it, THEN attempt it. Also, it got me thinking, I'd really love an authentic feeling aluminum Gameboy SP clamshell style. idk if they are hard to do. powkiddy v90 has been tempting but want the premium aluminum build quality like this plus playing Ps1 flawlessly. It's too cheap feeling. A shame.
He has really gone full modded now, I am so proud! From diy clicky switch controller to customizing a Gameboy. Well done!
For my birthday last year, I modified my old GBC, and it's great. Everything is new but the main board. I wouldn't do this mod for myself, but if I were taking requests I'd totally do this mod for others. I do have the same screen, and it's fantastic.
Me: Oh hey, an all metal GBC! This looks neat!
Wulff: yeah, it costs about $177...
Me: Aaaand suddenly the Analogue Pocket is sounding real nice right about now!
There is some guy on Etsy selling them for $460! And people are snatching them up! ?That is a little too rich for my blood.
That Gameboy goes crazy man love it
Couldn't believe this video didn't get a lot of love. It certainly wasn't like this was less interesting than usual. Very fun video, in point of fact!
I have done this mod for a friend and while it's amazing in the fit and finish(I do plan on building one for myself), I personally want to see a GBC in DMG mod. The pocket form factor has been one of my least favorite Game Boy iterations coming in second to last behind the GB micro mainly due the size of my hands (I wear Size XXL gloves).
I had similar issues with my build with that screen. It's amazing but I had to rebuild it like 3x using two different GBCs before it just all worked right. Terrifying.
Great to see you doing some soldering in your videos now, Bob. Do yourself a huge favor and get some angle tweezers - it will help a LOT when you get into some more projects. They’re cheap, and definitely worth it as you get more into small component repairs/mods like this.
I love that you have the gameboy advance by The Retro Future. He has one of my favorite channels too! 🔥
I love this channel. Good stuff man
Glad to see content that encourages budding DIYers
Bob: enjoyed dragon quest builders on the switch now take it anywhere
Me:I'm pretty sure I can take my switch anywhere thats kind of what sells the switch
I love that yellow Gameboy color
I'd totally have it anodized in that 90's teal that the GBC came in.
That's a beauty of a Gameboy! Well done!
When I was a kid, I never had to worry about batteries leaking over time. I left AAs in my Game Boy for months on end and never ran into an issue until more recently. I'm pretty sure the quality of disposable batteries has dipped by a lot.
Yep. That said, these days we've got easily accessible, quality rechargeable AAs that basically have almost no possibility of leaking and even if it did it's way more easy to clean up. Chuck some eneloops into, say, an Xbox One/Series controller, or even a modded Game Boy that still takes batteries.
Get that Square-Enid money! Great Stuff, as always!
You just get sooooooooooo much better reception than wood. Good!
Awesome mod dude! It looks solid 😎👍✨
You're building my metal gameboy color with brass buttons! Glad mine wasn't the first you ever built
Also a year ago I started a business doing this. I asked what you thought and you said do it lol. So far I’ve made 200 sales on my Etsy
your ads are always so good but i flippin LOVE when scootish makes an appearance
Bob - Why is there a 50% that your ads are the best part of any given video you put up
Man Bob, you've grown so much since the days of your first emulator videos!
I'm so glad I never skip Wulff's ads
Lol. The ad alone made this view worth it.
This is exactly the gameboy I've been wanting to own. Maybe have a decent linux emulator in a gameboy pocket shell.
I would definitely use one, but I'm holding out for the GBA SP unhinged. I think you should fully customize a DS/3DS with new shell, usb C and anything else I'm missing.
Great video as always!
Ooooh. Or even a 3DS Unhinged.
@@HungryHungryDude you mean... the original... 2ds?
Look up the GBA SP slate. It's the best looking, and by far the most intelligently designed GBA SP unhinged mod. There are other options like Boxypixel's own unhinged that is rather... boxy, to say the least. As well as the SP slab, which is a pretty interesting take on flipping the cartridge port to be top loading similar to the rest of the gameboy family.
@@Vasboch Kind of, but with a New 3DS, so it still has 3d functionality and more power under the hood than the original 3DS or 2DS.
My dream is to have a slab that plays 3ds, ds, gba, and gb(c) games. I would settle for just the ds, and gba made out of a modded ds if no one ever makes an fpga handheld that achieves 3ds complexity.
As for leaving batteries in devices.. use energizer lithium batteries if you tend to forget to take them out of your precious electronics. They’re not recommended to be used in older electronics because the voltage is a tad higher but they are guaranteed not to leak. They also last forever and are super lightweight.
This Metal Gear seems Solid.
I built one of these and it’s amazing in red.
That thing looks so sturdy and clean in the hand.
Except for the cartridges sticking out of the top like a tumor.
@@CockroachMunchingKrabbyPatty I actually think that adds to the vibe. But I can see why someone won't like it.
slime jackson is my favorite wulff den cryptid
I like this wulfden guy. He's pretty chill.
One of my favorite creators on this platform
That ad was amazing. I couldn’t care less about Game Boy mods, but the ads keep me coming back.
"You loved Dragon Quest Builders on Switch, now take it **anywhere** with you!"
... Wait hang on a second
Any tool/soldering iron recommendations for people looking to get into customizing and modding?
This is pretty awesome but way more than I’m willing to spend. I would kind of like a game boy that has a backlight but I don’t play them that much so I probably won’t do it any time soon. I’ve got a DS with a broken hinge I’ve been thinking about trying the game boy macro mod on. If I play portable my switch is what I grab usually anyway. I did just recently get a green dmg game boy from the play it loud series though, it’s pretty awesome!
well that ad ruled. forgot i was watching the gameboy pocket thing
SLIMEVANDO IS LOVE
I am legit thinking on getting the frame and also the buttons for black tbh
My take away from this video: you have the same Zelda coasters as me. Seriously though great vid!
thx for the video! could u link the solder?
Thats sick ngl!
would the nintendo switch clicky mod work with a 8bitdo pro 2 controller as well conceptually? I'm curious if soldering in some switches like you did on a switch pro would register keys as well on a 8bitdo pro 2.
I just realized Bob is essentially reviewing the tutorial he used, along with the finished product. I'm watching reviews for tutorials I will never watch, for products I will never buy. Huh.
Hey Bob, are there any videos you used to get to grips with soldering in general?
Dude you should of just duct taped it together!😂
When the Game Boy becomes a Game Man
love your channel dude, please don't let fame change you
This is the guy who thought Donkey Kong was released in the late 70's. Still baffling.
Now do a Neo Geo Pocket Color!
I followed you ajd did the mod for my switch pro controller. I don't like how it feels haha
I've always loved the Gameboy Pocket. I didn't own the DMG, a gold pocket was my first but I hated the color, I liked the silver and black versions. Wasn't going to complain though, it was the first console that was only mine. But the damned thing fell apart in my pocket! The heat from playing at school with it in my pocket melted the adhesive for the plastic screen cover and something got wedged in there, breaking the screen. My grandma got me a Color for my birthday, in berry of course. I hated that color too. I still have it though, 22 years later. I'm really considering this mod now, never done anything like it before.
Can't imagine how much the molding was for these shells
Cool vid, didn't even know they made metal cartridge shells
Now go make a video on custom game cases for the game boy extended family like what Scott Wozniak did yesterday on his second channel. Or shout-out Scott's latest second channel video on custom game cases in a tweet/community post/facebook status update. Or just watch Scott's latest second channel video on custom game cases it's very good
Great video!
Wait, that's how the bezel goes on? Also, take that custom metal cart and put a flashcard inside if it can fit
it's beautiful 🎉
If you read the title without paying attention it looks like it's saying something related to Metal Gear
More Skooty please and thank you
Squidward : Fuuuuture
Switchroot + AetherSX2, PS2 emulation on switch through android is improving with every update :)
Thank you for putting the weight in grams and not ounces and barley corn units.
@WULFF DEN Bro.. the red version w the metallic color and the metallic of the gameboy 🤌🤌🤌 the aesthetic
