      the original anime had that I think, like ten years ago. They changed it in the re-animation of the older arcs because apparently it's too gory for the kids now.

      @@NorthernShinigami No, they had him choose to have his leg ripped off while trying to save Sanji underwater. That was the early anime, too. It's only the manga that has him eating his own leg.

      @@NorthernShinigami It's the other way around, in the updated anime they didn't try to replace the self-cannibalism with some other heroic act. In the original anime they made it like he cut off his leg to save Sanji by swimming to him during the wreck, but in the original manga he indeed ate his leg and there was no ambiguity.
      About 800 or so chapters later, there was another cannibalism moment that Oda did a better job making ambiguous, but it's still clear that _somebody_ ate all their friends and family without realizing it.

      We got slavery(referenced by Arlong in the LA) don't think anybodys ready to see the real shit yet.

    3;30 In any case - you think, based on what you've seen, that Mihawk would deal a blow like that in a one on one fight and not leave them dead in two seconds by accident?
    We saw how quickly he killed Don Krieg. There was no doubt of him dying near instantly. If he wanted Zoro dead Zoro wouldn't have had time to talk.

    I don't really know why, but I always liked that bit in Baratie when Arlong said to the fish-man maitre'd "You dare stoop so low". Even from it's just trying to figure out the maitre'd's expression. I don't doubt he's scared of Arlong, but I wonder sometimes if he knows there's even just a kernel of truth in everything that Arlong was saying.
    Either way, no one liked being called a bootlicker. Which do you think it was, what Arlong was also saying in that line and when he turned the maitre'd's head saying 'serve? An interesting choice of words', think it was more 'why try? you know what they think of you' or 'you can't hide what you are'.

    Sanji's child actor has the lead role in the Sweet Tooth series where he plays a half-human, half-deer hybrid searching for his mother in a postapocalyptic world.
    After 70 days on the rock, Sanji, starving, has no more food and Zeff never had any since he ate his leg. Sanji tells Luffy that they stayed on the rock for 85 days. The question that arises is: what have they eaten in the last 15 days? No additional obvious parts of their bodies appear to be missing from Day 70 and now. Strange, right?😁😉

In terms of "those" kinds of pirate ships, I always feel Zoro is interested (also romantically) in a good fight and lots of alcohol, which is why I still feel Sanji entering the room, beating up two people without even using his hands and then walking over and offenisvely flirting by offering the whole menu of drinks available is essentially the perfect RomCom meet cute for those two with the only issue being that it is directed at Nami. :D There is a very short cut to Zoro who cracks a "Hello there, who are you and why are you talking to her not me?" smile in that scene that I can just not unsee.

    It is true that when you either fall or have to suddenly jump into the water it's better to take your clothes off - not all of them, just stuff like outer layers or maybe even your shirt, wet clothes are heavy so not only do they risk pulling you down, they also risk tiring you out because you'll be pulling heavy wet clothes along as well as your entire body weight.
    However, it may have been more practical for him to have taken his shoes off though.

    Edit: My point is One Piece IS political. Painfully political.
    The whole theme of One Piece is being free and going against the supposed leadership of that world. But watching the anime the first episodes (and by that I mean like, the first 300 hundred episodes, fillers included), you can't even tell there IS a global-level leadership - because they're all so corrupt and rich they separate themselves from the peasants living the rich life style and send the navy to do their biding.
    But they are. They're so awfully corrupt they kill anyone who opposes them and also have _slaves_
    and keep in mind, that's a world with no internet, no mass radio, no TV, only ONE _somewhat_ navy-controlled newspapers (lets just say the editor is rebelling for the sake of free press lol) , so no way for news or people to travel fast to fact check stuff that happens worldwide. So if that leadership, the World Government, decided to annihilate a whole island, no one is gonna know 'cause there wouldn't be any survivors left to tell. (except there are survivors, and they become pirates to escape the Navy.)

      I don't exactly disagree. It's got heavy political themes narratively but those don't really come into focus too much until you get to Water 7.

    Guys... the Fishman being slaves isn't an allegory for the chattel slavery of Africans. Slavery had existed long before then (the Roman Empire for example, lol) and still exists in parts of the world today. It's only political insofar as the messaging is slavery is bad; freedom is better.
    One Piece has political narrative themes but don't fall into the trap of believing they're overt allegory for the modern world, or that they're only reflective on one particular flavor of the body politic. The only thing that comes close to anything like that is an event that happens in a later arc (Fishman Island) which Oda pulls directly from Japanese History regarding the expansion of Christianity in that country.
    Just remember that when people try to convince you that One Piece is inherently one side of politics (leftist) that the same things those people would point to as parallels to western imperialism can also be seen as parallels to how a country such as the USSR was run.
    That all being said, I've been enjoying the reactions and look forward to the next two episodes. Be well, fellas.

    • @MorenaEvensong
      @MorenaEvensong 8 місяців тому +1

      In the anime/manga, you're absolutely right, the slavery/racism doesn't really reflect any real world-specific instance. And this early on in the story it's barely a thing in any case. The Arlong crew are the first fishmen we meet and he keeps going on about Fishman superiority, but it doesn't really go much further than that until much, much later. In the Live Action though? The coding here is DEFINITELY pointing at the African American experience -- Arlong's theme music isn't even trying to be subtle about it.

  • @R3_dacted0
    @R3_dacted0 7 місяців тому

    I think I have to disagree with the take on "everything being political." Though I think this disagreement stems from what exactly you define "political" as.
    Having real-world parallels doesn't automatically make something political, in my opinion. In fact, it can even be incredibly on-the-nose and still not be political, as it is in this case here.
    The distinction that I make is based on how well crafted the story dynamic is and how woven in the themes are. Or, to put it another way, there is a difference between a competently constructed story vs talking points in a TED talk. On one hand you have a layered piece of writing that can stand on its own regardless of real-world parallels. And on the other hand you have a paper thin plot that's only relevance stems from the social/political landscape of the real world during the time the story came out.
    The option to have a political discussion exists, _if you want,_ but you could also leave it completely alone and keep it totally fiction and none of your enjoyment would be sapped away. That's why I'm saying that it isn't really a political show. Plus, and I think this is the most important part, no "social solutions" are ever presented to the audience. Everything is presented and laid out, but how the audience interprets everything and what conclusions they draw is ultimately up to them. Because, at the end of the day, the audience does not care to hear about a writer's political messaging, _regardless of if they agree or disagree with it._ What they care about are the characters and how they get through the situations they are in.
