He uses his legs to fight cause his hands are only for cooking
He learned this fight style from Zeff
Zeff decided to open the baratie in the middle of the sea cause he knows what it is being starving when navigating and don't have anything available to eat

Sanji's backstory is the most manga accurate. And in the Anime was change about zeff's leg. Episode 5 and 6 are my favourite episodes.
Yeah. And I have to say, I do like that they put a little bit more emphasis on why they don’t waste food. And that they straight up said what Zeff did to his leg. They didn’t tip toe around it or just left it for the fans to figure it out for themselves.
I guess they changed it back in the anime because they still said that he ate it.
The storybook Nami reads to Zoro plays a big role in a future arc! That's gonna be a crazy expensive season!

Sanji's backstory hits even harder in the Live Action. The kid actors really did a great job portraying the emotions in the backstories for such a young age.
And those scenes of Nami with Zoro and Luffy with Zoro teared me up a little.
I don't think it hits harder because it was presented in a much calmer context. In the original we know about Sanji's story while he is getting beaten trying to save Baratie, because he knows the ship is all Zeff has left. The live action failed to portray the high stakes, but it was still nice because it was beautifully acted

The manga-version will always have the advantage of the artstyle.
Oda is a god when it comes to conveying emotion, and one of the parts that makes Sanji's backstory hit so hard is both the extreme emaciation he's able to draw, in addition to conveying the emotion of the two characters at each successive scene. Plus the fact that the manga shows Zeff the moment he starts to sever his own leg.
@@Artimaonah, the LA hits harder than in the original to me. I was sad when remember the first time reading it. But i cried when i watched this version. Because well, you said it yourself, the actor really brought the manga into a "Live Action" which is really what the main purpose it came to this in the first place.
@@Artimao it simply hits harder because they are real people, and its not overacted (if they made the good bye exactly like anime it would be lot worse). If i still was a kid maybe anime will hit harder thou, I can only suposse. They magic in this serie its the balance, changing (or skiping if its not possible to do) what should be changed to make it work with real actors. The problem its this gonna be harder and harder as the story moves on.
It's easy for Mihawk to tell that Luffy is related to Garp. Luffy does not hide his real name 'Monkey D. Luffy', and he never forgets to introduce it, while people know who 'Monkey D. Garp' is since he is a vice-admiral and the hero of the marines. There are also few people in the OP world with the family name 'Monkey' and with the middle initial 'D'. 😉 And it's been a running gag in OP that whenever Luffy does something, Garp's higher ups would say 'Garp, it's your family again!' 🤣
Most people in the world can't make this connection because they don't know anything about "Monkey D." Garp but only about "Garp", "Garp the Fist" or "Garp the Hero". So Mihawk is rather well-informed.

And if there’s another thing that Mihawk’s good at, it’s finding the right way, something that Zoro can’t 😂 I was a little disappointed when I didn’t see Mihawk calmly riding his cute ship to Baratie, that was kinda cool in the manga and anime 😊

@@f.carasind4188 Pretty sure he will know since before being Garp the Hero he was Monkey D Garp. Minhwak is from the time Roger was alive and everyone knew that Garp was after him. What people don't know is Dragon and Luffy's last name since if people get to know, it would be easier to make a connection there.

That whole mentor-student-bond/concept of found family, as well as inheriting the will to the future generation are two of my most favorite themes in this story, so this episode really was the highlight of S1 for me!
As a Sanji fan, I always thought it was quite interesting how similar Sanji is to Luffy (having both their father figures lose a limb for them & the belief in something intangible). I quite like the idea that, while Zoro embodies the Pirate King part of Luffy's dream, that requires strength & ambition, Sanji embodies the other part, that requires a different type of strength - continuing to believe in something ethereal, despite many people challenging your dream telling you to give it up.
You were worried last episode when Luffy snitched on Sanji to Zeff about feeding the hungry pirate, thinking it would get him in trouble, but really Zeff was proud, even called him a good boy.
They cringed so hard they missed what he said.

I love how they kept Zeff eating his own leg in the live action, because that’s what happened in the manga but in the anime he tore his leg off with a chain to save Sanji from drowning

The fact that Sanji lasted this long without food, it isn't a plot hole.
No one in this story's world who had a happy and well adjusted childhood chooses to be a pirate.

Sanji never uses his hands in a fight, he reserves them for cooking, hence why he only uses kicks. His fighting style is called The Black Leg Style, which Zeff taught him, it’s meant to resemble a hybrid martial arts that combines Brazilian Capoeira, French Savate, and Korean Taekwondo, historical systems of martial arts which emphasize versatile and powerful kicks.
I swear, Zoro's pledge to Luffy near the end was phenomenal. It may not have been exactly like the manga, but it's awesome in its own right. I"ll never get tired of it.
Once a devil fruit power user comes in contact with the sea water they not only become a normal person but also feel weak until they get dry themselves

The second part of Baratie has replaced most of the stuff which in canon was Don Krieg and replaced it mainly with some early Arlong (and Buggy) stuff, but it still flows very well and gives some time for Zoro to rest on his near fatal injury.
The Sanji backstory is very canon, including the part of Zeff eating his leg, you see a panel of him hacking it off but the anime chose not to go down the cannibalism route, and instead changed it so that he ripped off his leg while trapped underwater to save Sanji.
Nami's betrayal is similar, however it's only revealed on the next island and to Usopp and Zoro, Luffy never fights Arlong at Baratie and before it's revealed that Usopp's alive he's reluctant to believe that she 'killed' him. Luffy and Sanji were at the Merry dealing with a Sea Cow called Moocy at the time but Nami faked stabbing Usopp by stabbing her hand to allow him to escape, but at the same time Zoro when captured and tied up called her bluff and threw himself into water, Nami angrily fished him out proving there's more to the story than meets the eye. That being said Arlong does get the chance to dump Luffy into water, his feet trapped in stone to make him sink quicker, but thanks to Sanji and some others stretching his head out of the water he manages to escape. Also Sanji's goodbye with Zeff is kinda similar, the whole Baratie pretend to insult his cooking to drive him away, but when Zeff tells him not to catch a cold Sanji tearfully bows down before the whole restaurant to say goodbye, still heartfelt here though.
I bet now you can see why one piece is so popular around the world! The first season of the LA is just the prologue!
Oda is a master of flashbacks. And world building. And characters.
The last scene in this episode, the anime characters really splash a full fountain of tears. LITERALLY! 😭
One of the major reasons (I think maybe even the main one, can't remember as it's been so long since reading the East Blue arc) in the manga as to why Zeff stopped searching for the All Blue, is that he refused to do it without his crew. Although the live action doesn't touch on it, that scene still hits me.
I would argue that Sanji has the most tragic backstory out of the entire crew, there's another crew member later on that's also awful but I still think Sanji had the worst one. And it's not even the full backstory yet, you still don't know how a kid with seemingly no family ends up on a ship working as a cook.

I love it when I watch first timers get surprised that Mihawk knows Luffy is Garp's grandson because anyone who knows Garp's full name (Monkey D Garp) would realize that there is a connection with a young pirate named Monkey D Luffy.
I don't know her name but the girlfriend gives the most cute reactions, you can see that she's a really sensitive person for how much she empathizes with the characters.
I love the relationship between Zeff and Sanji - the deep love and respect, even if they never say things out loud. I really feel for Luffy here, he lost so much and even took responsibility for Nami’s betrayal “I lost the Grand Line map.” I love his reaction to Zoro waking up - pure elation and relief. Zoro’s vow gave me chills!!
Edit: I also teared up during Sanji’s backstory and when he and Zeff said goodbye… but just wait, the waterworks are comin!
The sanji arc in the live action was 10 times better than the anime and manga version for me. With the anime and manga version i din't cry, but with the live action Sanji i cried and i love this sanji a lot more.
I agree, the innocence, enthusiasm, and youthful joy in everything about Luffy really takes this show to the next level. Not just Luffy, everyone in this show owns their roles to a point that is dizzying. One or two cast members I'm used to, but the level of professionalism in the entire cast and crew (I can't discount the people behind the scenes) is what any show or movie should strive for. Sorry for rambling, I just can't praise this show enough.

In the anime, Zeff got his leg cut off whilst saving Sanji from drowning therefore having to retire from being a Pirate.
Zeff wasn't just a pirate captain back at the time, he was also known for his unique fighting style of using only kicks, a fighting style Sanji learned and uses to save his hands for only cooking.
Also, in the anime they changed how Zeff loses his leg, in the anime he gets stuck on debree while trying to save Sanji, so he takes the chain of an anchor and uses it to cut his leg. But in the manga and this series, is the real way he lost it. Zeff took that sharp rock and silently cut off his leg and ate it to survive.
Zeff and Sanji are so alike because one experience and a dream joins them, the harship of starvation in the middle of the sea. For that reason, they will always feed any hungry soul that begs for even scraps of food regardless if they pay later or not. Also the desire of finding the miracle sea that is the All Blue.
There are three sources of power in One Piece:
-Devil Fruit. No two are the same, but they all have the same weakness. Ocean Water
-Haki. I won't say anything about this yet, we'll learn more in Season 2.
-Magic. Only one known magic user exists, so it's incredibly rare.

Your reactions to the serIes are definitely some of my favourites. I think the best one piece LA reactions are ones from people who haven't watched the anime or read the manga and are going in completely blind. Also duos / couples. The blind aspect lets the reactors just enjoy the show rather than watching it as a checklist which Ive seen quite a few anime/manga fans do (imagine watching MCU reactions and every 20 seconds the reactor was constantly bringing up whether the events played out the same way in the comic rather than just enjoying the movie...be like nails on a chalk board). The couple/duo aspect makes way for great discussions where both reactors have time/room to state and elaborate on their thoughts and bounce off one another. Another thing that's great too is that you guys clearly love movie/tv so you can appreciate the nuanced elements of a show like acting, costume, choreography, set design etc on more than a surface level and it comes across to the audience well (or at least to me). So yeah, very enjoyable reaction.
The L.A didnt told us but, Sanji backstory its why he dont waste food, also why he always give food to people that are hungry....another thing is that he fights only with his legs because the hands are made for cook only

The sea doesn't just prevent Luffy from swimming, it temporarily takes away his powers and makes him feel weak. It's the same way with everyone that eats a devil fruit. It's kind of like Kryptonite for Superman. 👍
It doesn't take away their powers, just their strength. Luffy is still rubber and stretchy under water. Luffy should technically not be able to stuggle so much under water like he does in the live action adaptation, but Oda also messes it up in the Manga too

@@atheos.1383 no, it still doesn't take away powers at all. Devil fruit eaters won't use powers when fully submerged, but that's because they can't do anything when fully submerged. We've seen devil fruit eaters actively use their powers while partially submerged
Facts about the sea water weakness is that it cancels there powers.
It's kinda funny that Luffy says his name so much that nobody stops and thinks "wait.. Monkey D. Luffy? Like MONKEY D. GARP, THE HERO OF THE MARINES WITH A 50 YEAR LONG CAREER, THE MAN WHO CAUGHT GOLD ROGER 22 YEARS AGO?"

I know plenty of people have said this but it's basically IMPOSSIBLE for Luffy (or any devil fruit user) to save himself from drowning.
It takes an insane amount of willpower and raw strength to move even a little bit despite the sea water, and even then the odds are very much against devil fruit users.
As the Fishmen were arriving at the restaurant, Buggy’s head was in the dark bag underwater, that had to have been tortured.
In this arc 2 friends of zoro: Yosaku and Johnny was joining temporary with them and they was the guide for find Nami but they swapped with Buggy lol
Shirts and Pants actually hinder your mobility underwater, shits are easy to remove. He is shirtless during this scene in the manga too

Also in regards to Tim's question if Luffy could just stretch his arm to save himself from drowning, no he couldn't. Devil fruit users lose all their strength once they are submerged in sea water so Luffy was basically paralyzed.

Fun fact: zoro doesn't backs down and insists for this fight knowing he will probably lose. part of it is because he follows a idealogy that a swordsman only moves forward no plan B, no tactical retreat and that scars on a swords man's back is the greatest shame there is.

"Villain" for Mihawk is not the right word. Just understand that in one piece there are a lot of factions, and each has their own reasons to fight. Only a few characters fall into the "Villain" category, with many being much more of a grey area. Mihawk is a grey area, as at one point he may be an antagonist, at another, he may be friendly or at least cordial.
You should know by this point though, that one piece is NOT about black and white, good and evil.
please remember the story about noland the liar! it hints to many things like the story telling of the source material, the pattern the netflix series might take, and what else your missing out on (if your not an manga reader)
Edit: also pay attention to everyone's laugh! it becomes a big deal later on and is a key point in the original story ..................later events though
If you want to cry really hard in the goodbye scene, go to the anime (episode 30) or manga (chapter 68). This farewell is better in the original material than in this live action (it was sad, it's one of the most emotional scenes of the East Blue in One Piece)

They cut out some of the stuff in the mange, yet were able to make something so great because of it. I hope that it goes well the same in the next season. Hopefully Oda stays with them or at least provides some feedback
At first I was confused by Arlong's face, but then I realized that it wasn't all that bad. At least better than other fish-men. If only they made him a bit jacked.
If you see Taz (Sanji) and his pictures with Arlong and his fishmen cast, you'll see literally how tall, huge and jacked they are. Taz is already a 6 footer and his height is 1.83 m, he's also super ripped but the actors of Arlong and his fishmen are even bigger than him!
