Is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law really comic accurate? (No)

Dan Slott decided to drudge up She-Hulk attorney at law despite the show ending months ago. He claims the show is totally comic accurate and that he would know since he wrote for her. Never mind the showrunner went on the record saying the show went into development without intending to be comic accurate. Among all the other comic inaccuracies.

First of all, I hate Jessica Gao's admission of laziness that She-Hulk is an unfaithful adaptation, a tv show on Disney+ that is meant to be a Marvel superhero product and a procedural legal comedy, yet insists on being neither. Second of all, I feel very bad for this paradox in which Dan Slott has been boxed. Either he takes the risk of being falsely accused of being a misogynist for telling her she was in the wrong and she is false to the character, or she is the real misogynist here against herself because of how badly she messed up in adapting She-Hulk, and thinks that being a woman of color gives her a free pass to insult white men in her show as many times as she wants, and base most of She-Hulk's attempts at comedy around that! Anyone who questions her methods or corrects her mistakes is supposedly the greater misogynist.
Well, guess what? It does not excuse the obvious bad job she did because Jessica Gao and other She-Hulk writers are still going to be chastised by Marvel fans for self-centered writing about a self-centered main character, and more importantly, insulting the audience for whom they were hired to write and entertain by writing a completely different product for a completely different audience, or else no audience at all. The world and the events of She-Hulk are all about She-Hulk even though we know why it should not be all about her. So they should not have made the show all about them and their minor self-loathing problems if they wanted anyone who still cares about the MCU to like their adaptation of She-Hulk.

Even if we take his word for it, that doesn't make anything better. In fact, it makes matters worse because if we give him the benefit of the doubt, he's technically dissing his own set of comics because of the show's extremely poor quality.
Also, to go on a small tangent, it astounds me that nobody is pointing out how misogynistic the show writers for She-Hulk are. They keep going with these expectations that people hate She-Karen 'cause she's a woman and then go on to project their misogyny with things like Intelligencia or simply how unlikable they made She-Karen.

The biggest travesty of this show is the fact that they made complete fallacies of these originally awesome and interesting characters. This show could've brought so many of them to the limelight and showed off to the general public how cool the comic world can be. Instead it just reinforced stereotypes, fed trolls (which we all know you shouldn't do. Trolls literally won because of this), weakened Marvel as a whole, and pushed away people invested in Marvel and anyone potentially interested in comics in general.

4:20 - frankly, the fact that it IS true, is why it stings. Because for the fans, for the built in audience that these shows and movies were originally TRULY made for - it pulls back the curtain. Way too harshly. It breaks the veil, and rips apart suspension of disbelief. You kill the magic, and then the show runner can be free to wonder why she's not getting a second season. We want to see these characters, actually comic accurate. We want to root for them, and we'll happily pay for the privilege. When it's done well, and right. To the tune of having made Marvel Studio's literal ungodly profit thus far. The key point in that formula, the contract if you want to apply Tort Law, is DO NOT break the magic. They can't call us "trolls" if they've actively hired someone who admitted openly she IS one.
The thing is, Jen's POWERS were derivitive. And it took a LOT of work for skilled writers to create the reasons, within suspended disbelief that Jen WAS her own character and could stand on her own merit. There's a reason she's "not as strong" as The Hulk. That she's actively more articulate in most cases (barring Joe Fixit - or when Bruce has Hulk's body - or Professor Hulk) They went out of their way to explain it. To take apart the science, and the difference in their environment. To me, that's what they disrespect when they write her off as derivitive.

This show is another example of a piece of media that was created more with the people they anticipated not liking it in mind than the people who wanted the show in the first place, which almost always leads to the haters feeling vindicated by a product that isn't designed for anyone to actually like on its own merits. The idea that She-Hulk owned the trolls is fucking ludicrous...what it actually did was give a huge fucking income boost to the anti-woke content creators those trolls rally around. They may as well have shipped a case of whiskey to Critical Drinker's house for all they ruined the day of people who were never going to like the show in the first place.
Meanwhile they ignore the existence of actual fans of the character who just wanted the series to be something that lived up to what we feel the character deserves. Jessica Jones proved you can have a show about a female superhero that is loved by critics and fans alike and is a success by every measure. She-Hulk could have had that too, but instead what is the show's legacy actually going to be? What does it have to really be proud of if you don't think feeding trolls is an accomplishment?

Anybody noticed how aggro aggressive She-Hulk was being toward her cousin, giving off the " Anything you can do I can do better!" type of attitude when all he was trying to do is just share his knowledge with her. I started reading the John Byrne she hulk comic breaking the fourth wall, and it was very fun. There were so many lesser known heroes and villains. I really liked the space truckers specifically poppa wheelie and wide load. The villain Titania seemed more of a nuisance though. I liked the circus villains and the head people. If they actually put them in a good show that followed the source material, it would've been amazing.

Byrne's run on Sensational She-Hulk is one of my favorite comic series ever. I was hoping beyond hope that the show would do at least *SOME* amount of justice to the character and what makes her so fun and interesting. Every episode was like descending ever deeper into the bowels of Hell, from which no semblance of the original character or idea could possibly ever recover. To say I was disappointed would be a hilariously tragic understatement. What an absolute waste of such an incredible property.

Honestly? I would've been ok with a superhero slice of life detective show, a simple little series that shows Jen learning to control her powers and helping her cousin find his sons. I know I said this in the other video but seriously, the show could start with Jen going off to take down this criminal organization. Bruce begs her not to go since he believes that it's a trap meant to kill her to get to him, to let him or one of the other Avengers handle it. Jen is revealed to not be on great terms with her cousin due to his previous disappearance but she still promises to be careful. Jen goes and there's an ambush, she gets badly hurt so Bruce gives her a blood transfusion, turning her into She-Hulk.
The rest of the series could then be about her juggling her powers, the investigation, and her everyday life. Jen is at first unwilling to work with her cousin or her powers but, over time, she reconciles with her cousin, finds that she's actually really comfortable in her She-Hulk form, and they find the criminals that are holding Bruce's sons, leading to an epic Hulk and She-Hulk team up as they fight the villains.

The "problem" with comic book characters is they have so many people working on them, so many different continuities that it is so open to interpretation. Even among fans, fun discussions can quickly devolve into pointless arguments over who is "right" about a character. So, even though I totally get what you are saying and I agree, it is really pointless to try to criticise this show's "accuracy" because it's too easy to get dragged into the weeds splitting hairs and such. Slott is just standing up for his professional colleagues, but he's not really wrong, just maybe not being open to a lot of true fans' opinions.

To dissect his quote even more, "the most comic accurate MCU show" is a meaningless statement on Dan's part. To give Dan the benefit of the doubt, let's say She-Hulk is comically accurate to her series. How does Dan know She-Hulk is more accurate than Falcon and the Winter Soldier or WandaVision? He could say those shows change elements, but I could throw back that Intelligencia only shares the name with their comic counterpart and nothing more.

I actually really like your She-Hulk takes and it's always a delight seeing you have posted something whether here or on twitter. It's the highlight of the discussion on this show, a discussion I can't seem to get enough of.
I generally agree and you are very good at making your points concisely while hitting your major points without waffling. Excellent stuff.
I think there are some things I'd argue are accurate in the sense that the idea is rooted in She Hulks history and for the MCU shows She-Hulk draws most heavily from the source material. With that said yeah a lot of it is reworked into something unrecognisable. My issue was always Jen and the things immediately surrounding her like her family outside Bruce. There are other characters who I came to learn are inaccurate through videos like yours though and I realised how badly the show did
I actually think Titania's inferiority complex is a consistent idea across the show and comics. She definitely isn't as layered as in the comics but I think her need to one up Jen in the show seemed like something a woman who has been made to feel small before would do. She gets easily beaten in public in their first encounter and then she tries to claim her identity. Maybe a bit of a stretch but I can see it as a take on " there's only room for one strongest woman and it ain't you". Like if anyone should be regarded as the powerful "She-Hulk" it's her. Now a lot of this has to be inferred as subtext but I appreciate that unlike Jen Titania's core seems to at least get the basics of the character right.
She isn't with Creel and doesn't seem to know Marsha. She isn't a supervillain and didn't get her powers from Doom. She also hasn't struggled with trying to leave villainy or battled cancer. She is far less compelling for not experiencing all this but a woman who was bullied all her life gaining superpowers and constantly trying to assert herself as no longer a victim? Trying to prove she is the strongest? I think that idea is echoed in Jameela's performance

Dan Slott's Twitter comment just simply left a bitter taste in my mouth. Like, dude, the fact that he's the one who read the She-Hulk comics and even wrote them himself means that he knows She-Hulk in the show ISN'T comic accurate; but yet, he has the gall to go on record to say that it is. For him to do that in a Tweet is very dishonest, misleading, and inauthentic.
It frankly sounds to me like he was never a fan of the original She-Hulk comics he worked on, and that he wanted to write the character in the way he truly wanted her to be like. Of course, I have absolutely no evidence of this being true whatsoever, so take this proclomation with a grain of salt; but if it is true, then wow, have we been bamboozled.

To pick out one thing to comment on, one piece I believe the show itself touched on was "people don't/won't like a female lead superhero show/movie" or something close to that. At least from my perspective and experience, I don't think this is true.
My reasoning for not really liking Jen/She-Hulk is because of who she is as a Person. She's clearly written to /be/ liked, but... they kinda failed on that for me. You've mentioned in each of your She-Hulk videos why Jen isn't particularly likable already. On a similar note, I never found She-Hulk to even be heroic the entire time, no matter how things were framed to make her seem so.
