Hi, I am 70 years young and have been sewing since I was 12. Guess what, I sew over my pins and have never (knock on wood) incidents with my pins. Love your show. I have been quilting for years and you have inspired me to start clothing sewing again. God's blessings to you.
Thanks Lynn! Refreshing to hear your voice. It’s funny, having made some construction videos I have learned that people get very upset about certain things. Cutting layouts, dart moving techniques, pins. In the end, of course we are free to do things as we please. I’m not saying “do it this way or else!” It’s merely an exchange of knowledge and tips. Thank you so much for saying you love the channel.😄💕
I want you to know that my mom taught me how to sew very carefully over pins. Back then, sewing was an absolute but my mom, bless her, was NOT the best seamstress. Anyway, she showed me as a child learning to sew how to carefully place the pins so that the machine would stitch over them without them flying up into my face! Years and years later, my DAUGHTER went to college and actually took a class in costuming and had to sew for her class. She came home all excited because she got jumped for sewing over her pins. She informed me that was wrong. I have since tried to learn not to sew over them so to see you doing it now made me smile and also made me think-yeah, I'm going to go right now and sew over my pins on my next seam and to heck with the sewing police. Love your video as always!
Loved your story, Kitty; thanks! I guess it’s a discipline to remove each and every pin before sewing over them, and I admire those who do it. I could stand to try a little harder! I hope your daughter wasn’t put off of sewing because of a fussy instructor.😭Let’s give a cheer to the moms and grandmas who sewed and passed down a love for the craft to us. Where would we be without them?!💕
Kitty, I loved your story. My Mom also taught me to sew over the pins, but we also used the common straight pins. Even in Home Ec (back in the 70's) they also did that. But like your daughter, I recently (2018) took a class in Costume Design at my college and was told you could break your needle doing that and I finally tried the big bauble headpins everyone was using... so now I do remove my pins. I also love working with the bauble pins so much better than the straight pins. I have bought several batches of the extra-long quilt pins with the yellow bead heads on them!!
"I'm not meeting the queen. I just want something new to wear." So cool. It keeps the fear out of sewing. Making something new to wear. You make it fun. Thanks for showing us how you do it. Lots of good tips. Lynn
I love your comment that you are not sewing for the queen. When I get back to sewing I will remember it...priceless! I, too, love Viv's videos and look forward to seeing every single one!
I am Australian so I apologise if you don't understand our humour, but my husband was in my sewing room when your camera showed your beautiful array of fabrics. He asked me "where is that shop?". Aside from that I love your videos and the way you just keep on churning out one outfit after another and they all fit perfectly. You are amazing.
Oh Lois, there’s more! I moved in two more cabinets. I think your comment is brilliant. You can see I’m lagging with replies. But wanted to send my thanks for the smile.
LOVE your videos/tutorials. The crimping method is genius and worked perfectly! Would love to see more “sew along” videos! Thank you for making sewing less intimidating!
" Hand stitching is relaxing" - that's the wisdom you get with time ;) I used to hate basting and hand stitching. Now the more I sew the more I use it and it's such a time-saver in the end. I LOVE watching your videos! You are so relaxed, smiling, lovely and clever :* Love from Poland
Thank you for lovingly showing us how to get back into sewing, and yes! You are a wonderful teacher! Thank you, thank you! Now I know what stay stitching is! And to go slow, smooth it out, adjust, (don't run over bumps) and iron it all. Oh, my, I can't wait to see my nighty! Thank you so much! xxoo
Thank you! I have been hoping that I would see you sew a pattern. I am a beginning sewer and have picked up more tips from you from this one video than any other video I've ever watched. My mom was a seamstress and, unfortunately, she passed away before I decided to start sewing. I now have all of her notions and old sewing machines/sergers and decided it was finally time to learn. So, thanks for helping me with your videos.
This is heartwarming, Connie, thank you! I have some of my mom’s old notions and they’re very dear. We’re continuing in their footsteps and that means something. I’m so happy to think that I could have helped you in some small way with your sewing. Thanks again for writing; keep on sewing!😄💕
I'm new too! I'm still on easy things. I made my first sewing project ever yesterday........a glasses case. I also learned so much from this video even though it is above my current skill set.
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Hi Vivian, So fabulous to find your video this morning! Oh Gosh 🦋. Seeing you sew is super motivation for a new spring 👚. Thank you Dear Vivian ...... Cindy in Louisiana
Hello.Thank you for such a great video! I know it takes time to make it and talk while you’re sewing and then editing, again, thank you. I also want to thank you for your prayers for my surgery. The surgery went fine I thought, but today I’m having trouble breathing. I think they placed the pump in a bad place. I’m going to see my surgeons nurse practitioner on Wed. He left for vacation after he did my surgery.Anyway, great video, great job on the top. Have a blessed day! Ellizabeth
Elizabeth, I’m praying right NOW that your breathing eases and healing is swift and from here on out uneventful. Blessings on you as you recover. Your sunny attitude is half the battle!😄👍And you’re a dear to give me such thoughtful thanks. I really appreciate it!💕
Vivmom Sews Viv, thank you so much!!! I don’t have any friends left. My church and friends just dumped me after 10 or so surgeries. The Pastor would say he was going to come and bring communion and never show. After two times of that we never heard from them again. I’ve been too sick to go and find a new church and frankly, we’ve been burned so many time, I don’t know if we’re going to find one in our area. So I so very much appreciate your prayers. You’re so beautiful. Inside and out. God bless, Elizabeth
Sigh...people can be so disappointing. This is why my faith means so much to me, because the Lord doesn’t let us down. He may not answer as we’d like, but He doesn’t lie. His promises are true to the end. I hope you can find a friend or two nearby - maybe you’ll meet someone in an unlikely place like a coffee shop or the library. A lot of people who have never set foot in a church have more Christ-like love in them than some who’ve spent decades sitting in the front row!!❌⭕️
EnVivmom Sews Viv, thank you for the encouragement. I battle quilt so much. My husband and I were in missions ministry, but after a few years of me being sick, my husband also is sick, running our own small business and a ministry and at a time before I knew I was terminal we adopted our granddaughter. She’s five now. She lights up the room.I thank God for her every day. She’s amazing. I don’t think I would have made it through the hardest part of this without her. I believe that’s why God brought her to us. He is so good and faithful and sweet!!!!
My 38 year old Bernina automatically jumps over the pins. 38 years of not worrying about popping pins! Well worth it. I have been sewing since age 9 - 60years and have finally learned how to perfectly set a sleeve. Thank you for the crimping tip.
Wonderful to hear from you, Margaret! I confess that I sew over pins constantly, but in the sewing world it is taboo. There is a safety concern, of course, but like you I’ve never had a problem. My Featherweight glides right over pins and my new computerized Brothers are champs as well. But I don’t want to promote it. What a wealth of sewing experience you have! Bravo!!👏👏
Hi Viv - Yay to you!!! The way you explain things makes so much sense. I love that you know what you are talking about and share easy ways to do things. You should be a pattern writer and tester. If they read like you explain, a lot more people would sew garments. 👗👚👕👖🧵 I enjoy your videos so much. I really love this pattern. It is very pretty and looks very comfortable. The fabric you chose is perfect. It looks great on you. I like the hem like you made it. The next time you sit down and get your pattern boxes out to choose what you might want to sew, please turn on the camera and video it. Would be such a treat to watch as you decide on your next make. It was fun hanging out with you as you made (and taught how to make) a new top in a few hours. You are ready for coffee with your sister. Thank you for taking time to show how to make this top. 🧵🌷🦜 Hugs! 🤗🤗🤗👗🧵👚💕💕💕
Your note is so kind and bursting with compliments and affirmation, pam, and I just have to tell you how wonderful you are!! Thank you!!😄💕Hmm, choosing patterns...I’m a bit like a super ball on the highway with that. Boing boing boing bouncing all over the place. Sometimes I abandon the patterns altogether and start with fabric. Either way, I love doing it. The “scheming and dreaming” process is one of the best parts of sewing, isn’t it?😄Thanks again for being so kind. Look for my March Makes coming down the pike this weekend.
Vivmom Sews You are so sweet. I love the super ball bouncing down the highway. How funny!!! It would be fun to watch you scheme your next make. It’s all good if you do change your mind and go for the fabric first. That’s the fun of making. You can do what you want! Thank you for your sweet comment. 🤗🤗🌷
Hi vivmom. I have been sewing for over 55 yrs and nobody has ever shown me the crimping method of gathering on the machine, until now, thank you mrs, setting in sleeve caps has always been the bane of my life having to manually ease them into the sleeve holes, great job, can't thank you enough. xx
Hi jennifer! Thank you so much for writing. I am so happy that the crimping technique clicked with you!😄The first time I tried it I was amazed. I had always done the two rows of gathering stitches - which works, yes, but is a bit of a thrash. Crimping seems neater and faster. You’re very kind to write to me!💕
What a lovely Sunday morning.🌞 I cut out three tops whilst listening to your lovely voice. This video is going to be so helpful to beginners, but I love your tips too🙆 I don't crimp (my trick is to to sew gathering stiches around the whole sleeve - bar the seam allowance - not just just between the notches😁). Nevertheless, I will certainly crimp my next sleeves👌. I have endless sewjo at the moment, so now I'm off to do some finishing touches on two blouses. Thank you and Take Care. Gabrielle xx
Hey lady, I so enjoyed our visit today! I believe I've watched this video before, but I just felt like a sewing date and still enjoyed watching you sew this little top. Your kitty is so companionable. Aren't animals wonderful. Thank you for brightening my day.
Avid, I've been sewing since I was 10 years old but it's so interesting to watch someone else cover the basics!!! As always, I look forward to my favorite You Tuber (YOU) posting another video, thank you for making my day brighter!!!! Sunny smiles from California this month!!! Judy
oh my gosh I have been sewing for years and i have never seen crimping!!! I can't wait to try it I have been using the double gather stitch my whole life. Thank you! Thank You!
I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that you’ll love crimping, Veronica. It really changed my game!! The sleeves just seem to fit in without any fuss, and sew without any tucks. Two crucial wins! Let me know how it works for you.😄💕
Definitely going to try the crimping technique from now on. I’ve been sewing for almost 40 years and I’m still learning new things . Love your videos . Keep up the great work. You’re an inspiration. Thank you so much Viv. 😍
Well after reading your message, Elizabeth, I am smiling from ear to ear. Thank you for being so sweet. I know I need to make another construction video. It will be forthcoming, I promise! Just have to clear a few decks first.👍
Viv, it seems to take me so long to make a garment. Love the planning part, shopping for material, but some folks can make a top in an hour. If i do that it LOOKS like i did it too quickly...you are making so many garments per month! I am in awe...
This sewing video was much better than a class. I have taken several sewing classes and this is the first one that I actually learned what I was supposed to be doing. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for your patience. I so enjoy your down to earth personality. I have been sewing since I was @10, was taught on my grandmas foot pedal sewing machine which I now own. I would never consider myself to know it all. I watch as much as I can of sewing tutorials. There is ALWAYS something to learn from everyone. I avoided stretch fabric of all kinds, never learned how to sew this fabric but in watching you it seems a lot less scarier and I thank you. Keep up the good work in your filming. So great to see an actual finished sewing project from a pattern.
For me this video substitutes very well a sewing class !you are an wonderful teacher and the tip with the gathering sleeves is everythi g, thank you very much!So beautiful in your new top.
I loved this video. Great for beginners. I did learn something new. Temporarily marking with a thread. Great tip. I love your studio. Right now my machine is in my bedroom and I feel like I'm in a cave.😅
So happy to wake up on Sunday and watch your video before church. So many great tips. I especially love the fabric of the one you were wearing. Super cute, thanks again..
Love watching you sew! You have inspired me to sew again. Oiled my machines and dusted them off. Yesterday I watched the cute tip Simplicity 8694. Our town only has hobby lobby or Walmart. Purchased some cute fabric and the pattern. But holy cow! Did patterns almost double in the last 5 years???? 😳. I need to travel to a bigger town for my next patterns. Blessed that I found your channel!!! Happy sewing!!!
Wonderful episode! I really enjoy seeing your sewing style. I was having problems with sleeves during my sewing marathon. I forgot sew them in first, then serge. What difference, so simple yet necessary. I am on sewing marathon part two.
Hi Renee, you doll! I’m going through older comments and this jumped out at me. You are so kind and generous and you’ve made me smile, once again. Thanks so much!!🌺
LO💖E the crimping tip! I did not know that and it's so much easier than gathering the sleeve cap!😊 i designed, made patterns, and sewed three new blouses these past couple of weeks. Two of them are for my sister. You inspire me to keep moving!!!! God bless you.🙏🏽😊❤️🌸🌿🌻🍃🌼🌿🌺🍃🌷🌿💐 Your such a joy!
Go Jude Jane!!👏👏You’re a rock star!! And so glad the crimping trick is a new method you can add to your arsenal. It really does come in handy. Thanks so much for writing!
Hello Linda! I love the results with rayon challis. Sometimes it’s a little temperamental on the cutting table but not dreadful. And for the drape and softness it’s second to none. (Well, maybe silk? I’ve never sewn silk.) Yes, 96 garments in 2018 - not counting the ones I tossed into the trash!!😂
Never knew about the crimping. Will try that on my next sleeve insert. Very good video. You are a great teacher. Please make more videos like this one. I'm 66 and been sewing 50 years and you've taught me new things. Thank you
This video is sheer perfection! I am rewatching/listening to it today just for the comfort of your voice and the companionship. And of course, I'm learning. Again. It's funny how we'r trend to forget some things or miss some details the first time around. Anyway, I just love all your videos and your personality, Viv! 💜
I've just re-watched this video on a Saturday morning in March 2023, while sewing the free Karri Top pattern from the Mood Sewciety website. I was literally sewing in my first sleeve at exactly the same time you were demonstrating yours! Gosh, you do excellent sew-alongs! I hope life is going great for you, Viv! I always tell you how wonderful it was when I discovered your channel way back when you first started it. I think you were one of the originals in the online sewing community! You were certainly my gateway to discovering the community! Thank you for all you've done. You mean the world to me! Happy sewing!
Thank you so much for showing how to put in a sleeve. So much easier than what I was taught, and I feel more confident about sewing again! Sleeves were what I dreaded!
Glad this helped, Joanne. Approach those sleeves with a bright outlook. Sometimes we can psyche ourselves out of something and expect disaster. (I am a dyed in the wool pessimist, married to an uber optimist. Makes for some interesting conversations!) Those sleeves will NOT beat you. You’ll show them who’s boss, and be saying, “Next!”😄👊
Loved this video Sweetie!! I, like you, was taught the double rows of gathering threads. I love the crimping suggestion and intend on using when I put sleeves in the next time!! Thank you for all the work you put into this and all your videos....you’re the best💜!
I started sewing when I was 13 years old and am now 69. I have never heard of crimping but love it! I am planning to begin sewing for myself again after many years away and my only hold up is sizing patterns to my funky body. With your encouraging videos and the suggestions of where to find fabrics at reasonable prices I think I can do this. Thank you so much. Your tutorials are fantastic, thank you for doing them.
Hi Sue! You CAN do this, there is no doubt. Try some forgiving-fit pieces (pullover tops, caftans, elastic waist skirt) to build up some confidence. I like paying low prices for fabric because I am not afraid to chop right into it. Same with patterns. Just let the creativity carry you along. We’re all in this together!😄👍
I just adore you! Thanks for another fun video, a how to make it one at that! I like your take on how to do things. And yes, I've had my basting and stay stitching show! Can we say--ANNOYING!?! lol I'm loving our blue skies and it's going to be 50ish here today. We both need to get out and enjoy the weather Viv. Have a great day!
Aww Sandy, you’re a sweetheart. I wish my editing flowed a bit more fluidly, but it is what it is. I have the best viewers on earth!! So kind, so patient, and so willing to learn!! It makes me incredibly happy.😄💕
Thanks Cynthia! Darts can seem intimidating, so I try to spend as little time on them as I can.😄 I don’t always get the direction of them exactly correct - pointing to the apex but ending before it - but I figure there aren’t too many folks out there critiquing darts while you’re wearing a garment. If they are, run!!😂
I’m working on my first garment and am due to complete it later this week. Thanks, Viv and Joy for helping inspire me to try. Back in the 80s, I started a blouse supposedly with help, but my tutor didn’t have the time and I never picked it back up. Now, my teacher is different and has more time to help me. It’s actually NOT THAT DIFFICULT! It’s different from quilting but it as much as I thought.
I loved this video! I've been "crimping" for years but never new there was a name for it. Love how you do your darts! Much easier than marking with a pen. I've been praying for you. Hope you're doing well. Sure miss you and hope you're able to come back soon. May God bless you and your family.
I'm 65 years old I've been sewing off and on since I was about 12 years old. I've Lways dreaded easing sleeves, doing the double baste, all that. I can't believe I didn't know about crimping untill this year, from Joy, she said u do it too and it's FANTASTIC.i feel a whole new phase of sewing coming on,, lots of sleeves, No problem!!! From UK
Great to hear from you, Susan! Thank you for writing. I’m glad crimping will become a part of your sewing repertoire! Sometimes fabrics balk and don’t like it. In that case, it’s possible to do it twice and I’ve gotten good results. But usually it works just fine in one pass. I love it! I discovered it on the Pattern Review forums.😃
Thank you. I havent sewn for years until recently trying to make pajamas for grandkids.. oh my.. patterns have changed or and I have forgotten. Love you explaining everything. Thanks
You’re so welcome, peg. Your grandkids are blessed to have a sewing grandma, and they’ll treasure your handmade pajamas. Don’t worry about forgetting - it’ll all come back to you as you stick with it.😄💕
I have this pattern!! Never made it, guess I was waiting for your excellent instruction ! Love the fabric and the fit, most of all how you applied the binding on the neckline. Triple thanks ❤❤❤
Gosh Tina, I’m so happy to read this! Thanks for letting me know. I know that you CAN do it! There’s a lot of trial and error with sewing, but nothing is wasted. Even if the project takes a ride in the old wastebasket (I know it well), wisdom and knowledge have been gained. Press on!😄💕
This video was very helpful, especially the "sleeve crimping"! Your instructions and demonstrations are perfect! Thank you so much. Please make more of these?
Thanks for your sense of humor and your cleverness. This class was fun. Now I must take the the inspiration from you and go fit in and sew in the sleeves to my tunic. Love your quicker sew lessons.
Thank you, it took me back 55 years ago when I used to sew lots of dresses for everyone in my neighborhood, I didn’t use patterns, used to just measured my friends. So many memories! Thank You! I haven’t done any sewing anymore, lately I’m sewing doll dresses. You inspire me to start sewing again.😕🧵👗
Awesome, fun tutorial. Crimping…who knew? I followed your comment to me about fitting neckline and shoulders and made a drop sleeve cotton top. I was able to finally assess my personal fitting issues and for the first time (yeah, hard to admit) I have a garment that actually fits ME. I am grateful there are “no sewing police “ ( your quote) but no chance of getting arrested for my success. Lol. I now believe I can fit inset sleeves because I now understand the shoulder/neck alterations . I am grateful for your help. Thank you.
I really love these tutorials. I love your attitude towards sewing. So many sewists are obsessive perfectionists. I think it sucks all the joy out of sewing. And for the record - back in the day, we all sewed over pins! I loved seeing your fabric selection process. Keep the videos coming!
I'm a beginner sewer. I did go to a night class several years ago, the instructor was a hoot! She was a high school sewing teacher who also taught night classes. Anyway, I made an apron and a dress. I was disappointed with the dress because the neck gaped and I didn't know how to rectify it. So I have decided to have another go. I've invested in a beginner type sewing machine, and I'm watching UA-cam videos, and borrowing books from the library. I watched your video showing all your 60s dresses. Loved them. And this instructional video is full of extremely helpful advice, and it's entertaining too. The explanation and demonstration on self-facing, and the crimping of the sleeve was clear and detailed. Exactly what a beginner needs. So thank you so much. ♥️🪡✂️
Hi Louise! Thanks for your recent comments, and I’m thrilled to think that you’re interested in getting back to some sewing. I hope it all goes well. Just keep doing it...you’ll surprise yourself at how quickly you pick things up!😃
Thank you for replying to my message - I think for my first try at sewing clothes in a long time I am going to do this pattern. I have some rayon challis and it gives me more confidence to watch this sew-along. I will be starching my fabric for sure. Thank you for posting 🙂
Love how you showed how to crimp! I will definitely use that at the next opportunity! In all my nearly 60 years of sewing I have never seen that tactic!!!
Oh I hope you love it, Donna! I sure do. I can’t remember the last time I sewed two rows of basting stitches to ease in a sleeve. It’s a good one!😃Thanks for writing!
This is soooo much better then a sewing class. Your the best teacher EVER! I have saved this video in my favorites because of the compete step by step, start to finish and with tips that are fabulous! You may want to make a 2nd video by editing the crimping part and naming it this so it's an easy find for people or add it into title. I did not know it was called this but my guess is I would look for " how to sew a sleeve " I have never put a sleeve in yet but when I saw this I thought WOW my poor teacher in 7th grade could have saved herself from drinking as much as am guessing she must have done to keep dealing with all of us 🤣 bless that poor gal, but we loved her so much.again high five and THANK YOU for all you do and share with us, you are the light of my day and a joy to this world!!!,
Sliver, I am sooo late responding to some of these comments but yours is just so wonderful!! I had a good chuckle about your 7th grade teacher!🍷It’s great to hear that this video was helpful to you, yay!! I can’t thank you enough for your enthusiasm and kindness - people like you make these arduous construction videos worth it!! Blessings on you.🌺
Thank you for putting this together for us!! I enjoyed it!! I think I've been putting neckline facing on wrong😦. I'm so lazy if you did 96 garments in a year!!! Wow!! Can't wait for the March makes! 💕
Wow, Viv! You're a GREAT teacher! This video is so well done. Your step-by-step and the illustrations are very helpful. (I've never understood crimping until you showed us.) It must have taken you forever to film! The best part of your videos? You interact with your viewers as if you're our friend. You're down to earth, approachable, and FUNNY! Loved the encouragement you gave at the end of the video!!
Thank you SOOO much for the tutorial!!!! Such great tips for this newbie. I've made two tops...both of which I'm very disappointed in. I was about to find a new hobby when I saw this video. I've watched it twice and I'm going to give it another try. My favorite parts were making little cuts at the dots and how to do darts and necklines. Thanks again. Can't wait for the next "lesson". 😁
Hi Kim, I’m catching up on comments and just wanted to pop in and say how encouraging and sweet you are. You tell me the nicest things and it’s just like a cool breeze on a hot day.😃Thank you!! I know you’ve requested another construction video - I haven’t forgotten. Life has had the audacity to intrude on my sewing and things have been a tad haywire. Thanks for your patience.🌺
@@vivmomsews4962 i understand life interfering with sewing. At times I have to threaten with violence if I'm disturbed. I live on the family "compound" which means privacy is a luxury. 😁 your videos make me laugh and drink a Fresca!
Once again I have to thank you for an outstanding video. Learned so very much about the bias binding on the neck band Ed especially the crimping on the sleeve cap I had never heard of that. I have a whole tub of quilting fabric that I have dedicated to make tops and shirts from. I can see they will be decreasing greatly in the future! I must compliment you on the clarity of your instructions and the simplicity so even new garments hours can understand. As I've told you before I'm a quilter of over 30 years but not a garment maker and I can see that's just about to change! Thank you and have a great weekend
Gosh Sue, what a sweet note! You’re so lovely to write all these encouraging words.💕And I love hearing that you’re interested in sewing garments. I’d love to help any way I can, if you need it. Quilting is such a beautiful art and skill. I’m sure you’ve created some beauties!
I went out and bought this pattern! I'm so thankful for you and your love of sewing. You make every thing clear. God bless and thank you for all your help. Doris
WOW! I cannot wait to try the crimp method on my sleeves. Thank you. Now I am off to see what other tips and tricks I can pick up from you. Oh, one last thing. You are not the only one who sews over pins. One woman mentioned in her video that as long as you take it slow and easy (as you were doing) you can occasionally sew over pins
You inspired me to do that top from Simplicity #8556. You are so talented and a great teacher. Thank you so much for the step by step, especially through the neck binding and the sleeves. I hadn't done set-in sleeves in years. My top has already taken 5 hours. I didn't realize how sheer my fabric was and I ended up having to fully line the front and back. I am on the hem now and like you mentioned, I am going to even up the hem and just topstitch it. Thank you, I love watching your videos! :)
Viv, I love the tutorial and the shirt!! You are so much fun. Oh, how I laughed when you said...."I sewed over pins.....now the sewing police..." I missed what you last said because I laughed so hard I snorted!! Viv, your way of insetting sleeves looks quite easy. What is great is there is more than 1 method to getting a sewing task done. I saw Whitney from Tomcat Stichery inset a sleeve completely differently. She didn't baste, she did it sleeve side down, used her fingers/having her hand in between fabric layers and let feed dogs move the fabric. Her result was great. I am not agile in my hands anymore so I won't be doing it that way. I am confident I could do it your way. I am loosing patience as I get older, I don't like ripping out the seams. Thanks Viv. I'll be here next time. God Bless.
Hi, I am 70 years young and have been sewing since I was 12. Guess what, I sew over my pins and have never (knock on wood) incidents with my pins. Love your show. I have been quilting for years and you have inspired me to start clothing sewing again. God's blessings to you.

I think our mom’s machines were made of more rugged stuff than our are today. My mom always sewed over pins, too.
I have been sewing with the pins but I put them horizontal just to the left of the seam line that way you don’t need to stop and pull out pins.
Hello Kitty
"I'm not meeting the queen. I just want something new to wear." So cool. It keeps the fear out of sewing. Making something new to wear. You make it fun. Thanks for showing us how you do it. Lots of good tips. Lynn
Aww, you’re the best Lynn. Thanks!!😄💕
I would love to own that "shop!"
Oh my that made me laugh. I keep my fabric behind doors.
Thanks for the amazing hack of crimping for the sleeve cap!! You are awesome sauce😊👍
I sew the binding on the inside first then I can sew the binding on the outside last and I can get a nice seam on the outside. Great instructors.
Hello, how are you doing?
I’ve been sewing 40 years and I’ve never seen that crimping method!! I can’t wait to try it!! Thank you!!
Hello Diane
Non of other sewing channels are easy and simple as you 💚
Thanks for writing, dounia! You’re sweet.😄
LOVE your videos/tutorials. The crimping method is genius and worked perfectly! Would love to see more “sew along” videos! Thank you for making sewing less intimidating!
Aww you’re so welcome, Susan! Glad this was useful to you. Thanks for leaving me such a nice note!💕
Hello Marta
Thank you for lovingly showing us how to get back into sewing, and yes! You are a wonderful teacher! Thank you, thank you! Now I know what stay stitching is! And to go slow, smooth it out, adjust, (don't run over bumps) and iron it all. Oh, my, I can't wait to see my nighty! Thank you so much! xxoo
Thank you; you are so kind to take the time and share your way of sewing simple tips to make your garments come out pretty every time.❤🎉🎉🎉
Hello Connie
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Joshua Dennis instablaster =)
Ellizabeth
Hope you feel better very soon. Happy sewing.
God bless,
Elizabeth
I enjoy your videos so much.
Hugs!
You’re very kind to write to me!💕
I first saw crimping the sleeve cap on one of Joy's videos - it is the best gift for sewers!
Judy
Aww Judy, you’re so sweet. Thanks a million.😄💕
Hello Judy
oh my gosh I have been sewing for years and i have never seen crimping!!! I can't wait to try it I have been using the double gather stitch my whole life. Thank you! Thank You!
Veronica Throssel me too! So glad I watched this video
I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that you’ll love crimping, Veronica. It really changed my game!! The sleeves just seem to fit in without any fuss, and sew without any tucks. Two crucial wins! Let me know how it works for you.😄💕
I’m glad you watched too, Pam!😄💕
Hello
Precious fabric. Would love to see more sew alongs. You are such a hoot, it’s so enjoyable to laugh while sewing. I don’t feel like I’m sewing alone.
Definitely going to try the crimping technique from now on. I’ve been sewing for almost 40 years and I’m still learning new things . Love your videos . Keep up the great work. You’re an inspiration. Thank you so much Viv. 😍
Hello, how are you doing my friend?
I loved this video👌
You NAILED IT!
MORE PLEASE💖
Well after reading your message, Elizabeth, I am smiling from ear to ear. Thank you for being so sweet. I know I need to make another construction video. It will be forthcoming, I promise! Just have to clear a few decks first.👍
Viv, it seems to take me so long to make a garment. Love the planning part, shopping for material, but some folks can make a top in an hour. If i do that it LOOKS like i did it too quickly...you are making so many garments per month! I am in awe...
Hello, how are you doing?
You taught me something new, crimping. Love it. Also noticed you pin the opposite of how I've done it for 55 years, lol. Thank you.
Crimping! Brilliant!!! I’ve watched a hundred vlogs and this is the first time I’ve seen this. Love, love, love your tutorials. Thank you so much!
I’m so happy to hear this, Joyce!!😄💕Thanks for taking the time to write.
Hello Joyce
I love that fabric, your top turned out fabulous.
Wonderful episode! I really enjoy seeing your sewing style. I was having problems with sleeves during my sewing marathon. I forgot sew them in first, then serge. What difference, so simple yet necessary. I am on sewing marathon part two.
Hello, how are you doing?
Oh Viv, that was great. In all my 50 years of sewing, why was I not told about crimping? I must "go crimp" now! Xx Sue UK 😘
The spray starch idea is totally genius!
Hi Renee, you doll! I’m going through older comments and this jumped out at me. You are so kind and generous and you’ve made me smile, once again. Thanks so much!!🌺
Your videos have such a human touch. I enjoy them all. The word for you is excellence. 🎉
@@laurapage7294 Oh my, thanks Laura!💕
LO💖E the crimping tip! I did not know that and it's so much easier than gathering the sleeve cap!😊 i designed, made patterns, and sewed three new blouses these past couple of weeks. Two of them are for my sister. You inspire me to keep moving!!!! God bless you.🙏🏽😊❤️🌸🌿🌻🍃🌼🌿🌺🍃🌷🌿💐
Your such a joy!
Go Jude Jane!!👏👏You’re a rock star!! And so glad the crimping trick is a new method you can add to your arsenal. It really does come in handy. Thanks so much for writing!
Thanks for the video. I have never sewn rayon challis, but you've helped me realize it's not so difficult after all. 90 garments! Oh my word!
Hello
Never knew about the crimping. Will try that on my next sleeve insert. Very good video. You are a great teacher. Please make more videos like this one. I'm 66 and been sewing 50 years and you've taught me new things. Thank you
Thanks Dianna! You’re so nice to write and tell me this, makes me feel great!😃I’m glad you’re here.
A note from Patti always means a huge smile and the day getting better. Thank you dear!!💕
Hello Patti
hello from Greece.I love your makes and the way you talk to us all.allways with a smile!!love it , love it!
Hello to you in Greece, Angeliki! Wonderful to hear from you!😄💕
I started sewing when I was 13 years old and am now 69.
I love your tutorials. Thank you so much for all the time it takes to do this. I really appreciate it.
Aww Sandy, you’re a sweetheart. I wish my editing flowed a bit more fluidly, but it is what it is. I have the best viewers on earth!! So kind, so patient, and so willing to learn!! It makes me incredibly happy.😄💕
Hello, how are you doing my friend
Thank you for your dart brilliance today, such an improvement over my sad dart technique . So happy to have this Saturday tute, so much learning here.
Wow are you an awesome teacher! You speak slowly and clearly and don't leave out any little step with extra explanations. You teach so patiently..
I did love this video process!!! More please??? 💕💕💕
Hello, how are you doing my friend
I loved this video! I've been "crimping" for years but never new there was a name for it. Love how you do your darts! Much easier than marking with a pen. I've been praying for you. Hope you're doing well. Sure miss you and hope you're able to come back soon. May God bless you and your family.
Fantastic video, love the idea with the sleeve caps! Excellent, tfs. Annette ❤️😀👍🇬🇧
Thank you for the "crimping tip" I have sewn for many years and never knew about that tip! Just goes to show you, there is always more to learn!
Thanks Janice. I love that about sewing - it just never gets old. (Even though I do!!😖)
Thanks for that Viv!!! Some great little techniques in there - sleeve gathering and lowering bust dart 👌🧵
I love this video. Thanks for sharing.
I don't understand how anyone could dislike this. Even though this top is above my skill level right now, I learned a lot just by watching! Thank you.
Don’t worry about forgetting - it’ll all come back to you as you stick with it.😄💕
Thanks Vivmom! You are awesome!
Aww shucks. You’re a dear to say so.😄💕
I have this pattern!! Never made it, guess I was waiting for your excellent instruction ! Love the fabric and the fit, most of all how you applied the binding on the neckline. Triple thanks ❤❤❤
Hi Viv,you are my inspiration, you demonstrate in such a way that you make me feel confident that I can do it,thank you so so much xxx
Press on!😄💕
Hello, how are you doing my friend?
You hit the points where people would have issues. Thank you!
And you figured out how to be helpful. Good for you. You’re quite a joy to watch!
Thank you!😄
This video was very helpful, especially the "sleeve crimping"! Your instructions and demonstrations are perfect! Thank you so much. Please make more of these?
Thanks Dianne! They’re a little arduous to film, but I promise I’ll give it some thought.👍
Wow, I love the crimping in the sleeves. I've never heard of that. Now I'm excited to sew a shirt! Thank you!
My pleasure, Diane. Thanks for taking the time to comment!😄👍
Thanks for your sense of humor and your cleverness. This class was fun. Now I must take the the inspiration from you and go fit in and sew in the sleeves to my tunic. Love your quicker sew lessons.
Aww, you’re a sweetie June. I’m glad this video was fun. I know you’ll have success with those sleeves!😄💕
Hello June
Thank you for a great tutorial! Love you Vivmom
It did take the place of a class for me! All of the things I get stuck on, you just explained to me! Thank you!
Hi it’s me again Sheila from the UK. I have just found your tutorial on crimping 2018.
Thank you 👍😍
Have been a sewer since the 60's and never knew about crimping. Must try that. thanks for the tip
I have my mother's picking shears. They are also Wiss. Your videos bring back wonderful memories to me.
Just keep doing it...you’ll surprise yourself at how quickly you pick things up!😃
You have inspired me to get going on my fabric stash and make some new tops! Love your style - both in fashion and humor!
Thank you for replying to my message - I think for my first try at sewing clothes in a long time I am going to do this pattern. I have some rayon challis and it gives me more confidence to watch this sew-along. I will be starching my fabric for sure. Thank you for posting 🙂
I love the crimping technique for those tricky sleeves! You are AWESOME💕✨
Thanks, Tanya! You’re a sweetheart!!💕
Blessings on you.🌺
❤️🍹
Aww Denise, thank you!! You’re giving me motivation to film another construction video soon!👍
Thank you! Love your videos; and loving the ones where you're demonstrating your own, "how to". You keep me inspired to sew! Have a blessed day!
Aww, right back at ya, Janet, for having a blessed day. Your sunny comment has surely improved my day. Thanks!💕
I'm glad this kind of tutorial exists. You've got a good thing going here. Thanks for all the tips.
I'm binge watching. Lol
Welcome, Louisa! Glad you’re here.😄
I went out and bought this pattern!
God Bless.
I love your new sew along videos. You are a wonderful teacher.
Thanks so much!😃
Lots of good instruction here. Hey Viv, I live in the UK, don't think you would even want to meet the queen. LOL
You got that right! I’m afraid I am no fan of the royal family.😑But I am an Angel fan!😄Thanks for writing!
Thank you for the crimping demonstration.
