>Ivy doesn't work as a child I'm guessing they didn't watch the 2000s The Batman animated series then, where she is literally just that concept She's around the same age she is at the start of Gotham and still manages to do all the stuff she can do in any other incarnation, with the additional squeak factor that entails
@@TKinfinity01 Yeah like just under pathetic characters I love sarcastic character and that conversation he has with Jim I think in season 3 is probably one of his best moments.
"You see the seagulls are a metaphor for the plot, they're flapping their wings but they're not going anywhere" Too good, I love gotham but damn, in retrospect it has a lot of flaws
As a biologist this drives me nuts, because that is the exact opposite of how seagulls work. XD Gotham! Seagulls are made for gliding and soaring! You're thinking of humming birds, Gotham, humming birds!
@@HalfBreadChaos Unless they are not seagulls. Maybe they're made by Hugo Strange as a kind of bird that can flap its wings so fast that you can't see, and looks like seagulls
The solution to Ivy's powers of seduction is giving her the power of feigned innocence. She's not gonna get what she wants by removing your pants. She'll get what she wants by going to a police officer with a tear stained face asking for help finding her Mommy and then after telling him her address lead him someplace quiet to slit his throat. That's what the fanfic community does and it's truly terrifying when done correctly
Exactly. There's a book I like in which a female character has the seduction power, and her daughter also inherits superpowers, but instead of being seductive (because she's like thirteen) she's unbearably adorable and sweet and makes everyone around her let their guard down. Less "anything for you, sexy" and more "awww, anything for you, sweetie"
@@tacticalturret505 Technically it's like a middle school grade book but I've always liked it, it's called Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm A Supervillain
It's so funny to assume men aren't fully attracted to teen girls, especially men who deserve to be murdered lol. It's also been shown that women are hit on the most in those years (around 13-15) so her powers of seduction would ironically be strongest. Like, lean into it without copping out & changing actor/character. There's a great supernatural ep where a teen girl is used as bait for a vampire house where she lures pedophiles to be drained. It's also used in Let The Right One In. It's probably used a lot in the vampire genre those are just two I know off cuff.
my confusion with barbara is how did it even happen, she gets kidnapped by a serial killer and suddenly shes a whole different person nothing made her that way she just happened to become crazy out of nowhere for no reason at all with no explanation at all
Yes, and James Gordon just dumping her in a blink of an eye. They are going to get married, then she is kidnapped and turned crazy. There isn't even any run time for Gordon to fix things for her and between them, he just straight out dumped her and turn around to start another love story with Lee. Makes James Gordon looks like a real jerk.
They realised that having Barbara as Jim's loving girlfriend wasn't working so they had her be kidnapped, tortured by The Ogre and go psycho thinking it would improve her character. It didn't. She was basically Gotham's Lana Lang with them constantly changing her character and putting her in as many storylines as they could hoping to make her interesting but they never could.
@taltigolt I think the idea was that Barbara had always been "Unhinged" - It had simply never manifested... However, it was done very badly and failed to come across that way. I have had to rewatch that arc three times to decipher that much and even then it's more "Fan Speculation" than "Canon"
@@Phoenix2312 Same! Also the fact that she killed her parents. Which made her completely cuckoo for coconuts. As for Jim I think he realized there was nothing he could do to help her. She played too many mind games with him too. Jim can't really stand criminals either. So to me it made sense why he acted the way he acted towards her eventually.
When the Kristen clone was sent in as Edwards perfect girlfriend, I was like, "oh this cheesy, but that's on brand" because I was SO convinced that Isabella was made by Hugo strange, and sent by Court of Owls, to access Edwards eligibility to join the Court of Owls. The court of Owls made a clone of Bruce Wayne, so we know that they can do that, and Riddler is an intelligent individual that they could profit from using. If the court made Edward emotionally attached Isabella, who is built to be his ideal girlfriend, then they could use that to manipulate him into doing what they wanted. It explained why she looked like Kristen Kringle. It explained why she sticks with him even after learning that he was in Arkham for murder. Also, it explained why she said she had to leave to attend a "LIBRARIAN CONFERENCE" which I assumed was her cover for a Court of Owls de-briefing. So you can imagine my frustration when the conclusion was "She was just a rando look-a-like."
@@Dagenspear You mean like she had another movie or TV show that she was contractually obligated to be in so they dropped the whole plot and killed her off quick because they ran out of her available time?
@@parker469a I don't know. It might've been like that. Though I think it's possible the writers may have changed their mind about the season's direction.
OMG SAME i was so confused when she just died with no follow up like i definitely thought she had a connection to the court of owls and they definitely set it up like that so i have no idea why they ended up cutting that plot short but its one of the most disapointing things that happened in gotham for me.
"Ed Nygma, the riddle-loving forensic scientist has a big crush on his coworker, Kristen Kringle. Unfortunately for Ed, he has an alternative personality that has a big crush on murder." That line got me to laugh so hard, holy shit. Like, just the way you delivered it was 👌 perfection
I think the "Isabella dying scene" could have been so much better because Penguin is constantly teetering on the knives edge between impulsive outbursts and long thought out schemes. It would have been so much better for him to think out a plan and then abandon it in a fit of rage. Like if he just shot her in front of Ed after she survived the car incident because it could show him as an evil child prone to outbursts.
Yeah. I actually felt bad for Isabella in that scene. I thought she was a villain trying to seduce Ed and everything, and the death scene was supposed to make me feel satisfied.
I love the idea of Ed "my entire character is I have a giant ego, and try to prove I'm better than people" Nygma sitting down, and writing a rap, then finding two homeless dudes to go and sing it to the mayor. But honestly, I stan the shit out of this show, its a mess, but a mess that's sort of good
I mean it's just a ball of chaos which is fun as hell but they have no idea how to develop Edward and it shows. Kill ya girlfriend and go off deep end. Well alright sure! Doing it two, three times.. you have 0 creativity
I wanna see a Gotham spinoff where it's an adult Batman fighting late middle age or elderly versions of his villains. That's literally what this show is setting up Gotham to be lol
Not really. All live action Harvey Dent's are played by actors older than the Bruce Wayne actors. Bruce will more be fighting a lot of them in their early/mid/late 40's. I don't see it as a huge deal.
I would rather see a show that starts were gotham ended. Soo with a young batman that slowly takes over the city and seeing his relationship with selena evolving now that they are young adults
I kinda love this show but god is it stupid. I think one of my biggest complaints is that they under/misused characters like Victor Zsasz and Harvey Dent.
Given how much screentime Dent was given in the earlier seasons, I think it's highly likely they wanted to go that direction but for some reason decided against it. This make no sense to me, since Harvey Dent could have easily replaced any of the "big bad" villains and the show would be a good deal better. And I don't mean strictly substituting him in for a character, but rather rewriting the plot around his character arc. I think the best place for Harvey to become Two-face would be in Season 3 (I think?) when Penguin runs for mayor. How hard would it be to have Harvey Dent oppose Penguin in the election, causing Penguin to send his goons after Harvey, mutilating him and fueling his desire for vengeance. Plus, it would reference the Telltale games, which I really enjoy playing.
I think it started with the whole red hood thing becoming popular and then suddenly we live in a world where we're suppose to believe Batman is responsible for Tiger-Shark and the Ten-Eyed Man
Exactly. His villains were crazy or evil long before Bruce became Batman and would still have been even if he hadn't. Joe Chill, a man like the villains created Batman by killing Bruce's parents inspiring Bruce to fight crime to try and make sure no kid would have to go through what he did. If anything the villains created Batman.
Joker (1989): "Give me a break. I was a kid when I killed your parents. When I say "I made you" you gotta say "you made me." How childish can you get?"
Also, again, Barbara is really the character that lived too long to the point where the writers really don't know where to take them. Like Jerome should have killed her, or something like that.
Barbara was pretty bad from the start. Wasn't it season 1 when she found Catgirl and "young" Ivy in her apartment without Gordon and then offered to slut them up to get boys no questions asked?
PhasicInverter yeah, she was never really, in it. I don't know, I never really liked her as a character. She's constantly changing her character, personally, I would've had her death in Season 3 be the end for her character, her resurrection just felt one writer was like "No no wait, what if we tied her into Ras Al Ghul because that's cool!" No, it isn't, this just promotes the idea that we shouldn't have any kind of reaction when someone dies, even when they're original to the show. Barbara, Fish Mooney and Jerome were all technically original characters, all died, all came back to life. It's like in Kingsman The Golden Circle, if you want your characters to be alive for later stories, don't kill them! Wow, I really went on a tangent there!
Yeah...and how about that dumb blonde woman (the crazy ex)? And the fukin league of Feminists or feminist assassins? Oh gawd! Fish mooney was horrible as well. Gordon was a moron. The penguin was a goddamn chihuahua barking levels of annoying. Gotham had so much potential in the beginning and it went to complete shit very fast. Just like flash..sorry i meant iris west and the star labs adventures starring retarded useless flash. And arrow...i mean felicity smoak and team arrow bizarre adventures. I didnt even try to watch supergirl. That dumb trash is filmed and has the colour palette and plot of a fukin soap opera teen drama for teenage girls. Just looking at it makes mes wanna puke.
Remember finding out how Barbra was still alive after Tabitha electrifying her? Me neither. What about that time when Ed didn't have a crappy hair cut? Nope. You know what I do remember tho? The spirit of the goat.
@@sarafontanini7051 How dare you disrespect the formidable foe that is, Kite Man! People tremble when they hear of his dastardly feats and look on in awe of his superior kite skills!
Hold up, prove it. As a hardcore Batman fan im calling bullshit on you here. There is a villain with the name for the Metal Men and he is an actual balloon type person, not someone who uses them as props. In fact even the main wiki, DC wiki and Batman wiki all state that this is a pure Gotham creation. So yea, not a thing, proper stupid and easy to disprove.
I got cheated out of an adorable bond between Nygma and Cobblepot and I will NEVER forgive Gotham for it. I wanted to see them being evil super villains that love each other and what did I get?? A BUNCH OF NOTHING.
Of everything that is my absolute biggest disappointment of the show. I was itching for that relationship to flourish for damn near 2 seasons and they spat in my face.... 😡 I would’ve even been happy if they ended their last scene with a quick pec on the lips. Lol 😂
ugh i was team nygmobblepot too. even the official twitter teased it constantly, then they fkn bring in isabella, kill her off, and we never hear anything about her again. total bs. i quit watching after season 3
The entire "Penguin loves Ed" idea was clearly made to be a tease with no planned pay-off. Ever. There are so many other ways they could've handled the writing and still ended up at the same place they did while also giving us interesting and new views on the characters. Just have Ed fall in love with a girl. Penguin was Ed that the Riddler will kill her. Penguin serves Ed and his girlfriend enough booze for Ed to lose control, kill her and hide the body himself like he did with Kristen. Ed blames himself. Penguin confesses his love, Ed rejects but (over a few episodes) warms up to the idea as Penguin is someone the Riddler can never kill, aka, giving him someone to love forever. They fall in love. Some time goes by, Ed figured out what Penguin did, Ed and Riddler merges and takes revenge. Boom. Same end result, much better road to it.
There are so many alternative ways to do that, and the show just went for the least interesting one. It carried no meaning, and it's just stupid. Oswald killing Isabella should be one of the most important plot points of the season, because it's when their relationship breaks. It should be ironic, it should have used something that matters to Oswald, Ed, and the audience (just like what you said about Ed's past behavior). Your version would be much more interesting than what we have now.
I don’t feel it’s fair to blame the writers for that. Studios can be a bitch and you’ll be surprised by how often they’ll force writers to change the script to avoid rocking the wrong boat. What happened to Oswald and Ed is the result of the writers having to suddenly switch gears to avoid their show getting pre-maturely canceled
This show is the worst kind of frustrating sometimes. I think Cory Michael Smith who plays Ed Nygma is arguably the most believable portrayal of any character on the show, but also the most well acted generally. And there have been some absolutely phenomenal scenes with the character; namely the "it felt beautiful" scene, and the initial time that Nygma shot Cobblepot and threw him in the river. It feels like the actors are trying to save the show from its own bad writing and vision and it kinda blows.
I have an alternative explanation. I think there are different writers of the show, and they are in odds with one another. So whenever one of them makes an importan plot-change choice, the next guy just forgets about it, dismisses it or makes any kind of crap to eliminate it from the canon altogether (including characters' deaths). They are not respecting each other these script writers. And that's why Gotham has incredible, beautiful plotlines that follow their own inner logic, but the show (and even the arcs) are all over the place. Its overarching logic just doesn't work.
This show sounds like Batman's rogues' gallery trying to "It was just a prank, bro" each other and...that kind of makes me want to watch it? These videos are great! Keep it up!
Thats pretty dead on, with gordon running around like a parent going stop "pranking each other!" and then they start pranking him in between continue to screw with each other.
Best thing In gotham for me was when the mad hatter was trying to use mind control but bullock just screams and chases them down as they just run dunno why I laughed so much but I did
@@amandatidey5751 It was definitely the best scene in Gotham for me by far. I wish there was more focus on Scarecrow's and the Mad Hatter's relationship. Can we all agree season 5 doesn't exist.
@@sydnamon5986 absolutely! I wasn't the biggest fan of the scarecrow but everytime the Mad Hatter was on omg I was so intrigued! I would have loved to watch him and Jerome more. The episode where he has Jim running around the city making him choose who to save and who to let die was one of my favorites!
Because he forgot that he had a gun and had to finish his line so they had enough time to getaway before he could shoot them, and then ran half-heartedly at them like it was the 15th take and he was just done with that shit
I saw your Ron video and then marathoned all your other videos, they're so good, you're having so much fun talking about everything you talk about, praise the algorithm for bringing me here
Best thing about Gotham is probably Harvey Bollock. I love his humor. Gotham is alright but man, at certain points the show becomes a meme. I will say there are moments where it ain’t all meme like.
But they kind of got Bullock wrong by making him corrupt in the start that's just not Harvey Bullock. He is meant to be basically the cleanest cop by not wanting to work with a vigilante or take bribes from criminals. He's a cleaner cop than Jim Gordon and they made him corrupt.
@@COOLMCDEN eh there are actually some versions where he is just like the show where he is a bit corrupt but not as much as some of the other Gotham cops
Everybody absolutely hated Barbara in the first season, because she was such a colossal nag. I'm convinced that they turned her into a villain to try and salvage the character in some way.
"See, the seagulls are a metaphor for the plot. They're flapping their wings, but they're not going anywhere." I had to listen to to this line many times in a row because I could not stop laughing. Your delivery of it was perfect. Also, the rest of the video is great too. But something about that particular line tickled me.
@@Silen_Tone yeah he endured literal battery acid melting him for hours on end. the story of his requirements to act on batman and robin sound like a batman villian origin story.
I feel like an interesting way to go with Isabella would be to make the fact that she looks like Kristin completely in Ed's mind. Like Oswald see's her for the first time and it's just straight up a different actor. It could have been a fun twist, and a way to get rid of the whole confusing doppelganger arc. It would also be another way to solidify the fact Ed is fucking insane. Also, I love the stabbing idea, where Oswald just kills her there. This could leave more time in the season to expand on her character prior to her death, and have Ed figure out it was Oswald. When it comes to everything else, I actually really enjoyed it and it become one of my favorite arcs in the show.
"The Balloon Man is the true test for how much you DON'T respect your time." Jesus Christ, I couldn't agree more. Now I hate myself for watching two whole seasons of this.
My two biggest issues with Gotham...EVERY SINGLE time the Gordan and Lee romance shows up...so like 40% of the 3rd/4th seasons. And my second issue is that you can make a drinking game for how many times the GCPD gets taken over by literally anybody. And I mean ANYBODY. Sometimes it's just one person. Sometimes it's only 3 random thugs that Mad Hatter recruited. It's just soooo soooo common. I understand that the Gotham police force is just terrible at their jobs, but when it's every other episode, it gets a little ridiculous...more so then usual.
Also you can't just walk into the office area of police stations, meaning that the GCPD has just about the shittiest security. A god damn ranger station in the middle of butt fuck nowhere probably has better security, and it would literally just be a locked door.
You nailed it for Barbara! About the Batman creating its villains, honestly, when you look at the origin stories in the comics, most of times, Batman has nothing to do with them becoming criminals. In fact, the Batman Animated Series had an episode where this question was explored in a fun and clever way.
Okay. Can I just say I want to hug you for everything you said about Mr. Freeze and grief. ‘Cos holy shit every word of that hit home and hit hard. Because I know that grief so well and even before I had to experience that life changing moment, I was always blown away and deeply touched by Victor’s struggle. It’s why a lot of different versions that forget all they key components are always forgettable and inferior.
Gotham is so so so so flawed. But I love it anyway lol. The characters are just so damn lovable. I can’t totally hate anyone. Except the mad hatter. God that dude just makes me M A D
people tend to not like dc shows and movies because they see them as too dark or grim but that’s how the comics are and the shows are based off the comics
Young Justice has the human props problem too. Characters are brought in and partially fleshed out and then just kind of stick around doing nothing besides being extended cameos or cute nods. Also, funnily enough, Titans also has that colour saturation/lighting problem.
This videos have a mesmerising quality to them: while they are bashing the show for its missteps you can feel a lot of love and care for the show. And you know that? I'm going to give it another shot, i stopped watching it mid-season 1, but kept tabs on it, and, i guess, this video made a final push for me. Thank you.
I've been watching the series for the first time and what I find most disappointing about the Isabella plot is that she actually did turn out to be nothing but a random doppleganger who only existed to become the Riddler's perfect girlfriend, and then die. I had assumed, given that the show was running another plot at the same time about a doctor who kills people to give their faces to criminal clients, that she was going to turn out to be a plant by someone who wanted to steal power away from Mayor Penguin by using his best friend against him. (I was thinking Court of Owls since we'd already seen that they can clone people.) Given Oswald's history with betrayal and losing loved ones, this could have cemented the Penguin and Riddler as a team and it would've made so much more sense than what we actually got. :(
Yo didn't Lee have a baby? Jim sees her and her baby right? But then she just comes back to Gotham not pregnant and with no baby... I feel like I'm the only one who was confused about that part...
Lee would have been an awesome mother of Barbara Gordon, only problem would be her reaction to his suggestion they name their daughter after his psycho ex-fiance that tried to kill her.
I completely agree with all of your points. As someone who loves the Batman universe and enjoys watching Gotham, it's definitely an extremely poorly written series. I enjoy watching it because I like seeing alternate stories for some of my favorite characters. There are bits in the series that I really do love, but I definitely watch it with my standards lowered. I will say that I'm surprised you chose Nygma's whole Isabella saga as your number 1 pick. Don't get me wrong, it was bad and it should be on the list, but I personally would have chosen Barbara Keen as my number 1 pick. Her character is literally the most poorly written thing I've ever consumed in any sort of entertainment.
Ikr, when Barbara came back and “harnessed the power” that she was given I wanted to throw my television against the wall. She’s a reoccurring character that just gets more annoying with every second. Should have stuck with being ex-wife, now she’s some goddess with power and money she doesn’t even deserve.
I am surprised no one is talking about Jim Gordons relationship with The Penquin. That shit drove me insane. Jim wants to stay a honest cop but makes deal with The Penguin. Then The Penguin asks him for a favour in return and Jim says no. The Penquin is mad. But then Jim asks him for another favour. The Penquin agrees, but then asks for a favour later in return. Jim says no. I am all for crazy shows, but what the fuck?
@@Greendalewitch Yeah, that's one thing I've definitely noticed but haven't given enough weight to. I will say that I do like that the show primarily focuses on a non-joker villain (the joker is fantastic, but we see more than enough joker love collectively in other batman stories), but as a "main" antagonist, his relationship with the protagonist is pretty pathetic.
@@Greendalewitch omg ikr! That drove me mad and is one of the reasons i dislike the character of jim gordon. He just keeps contradicting himself and its so fucking annoying.
I know right. He was one of the few legitimately scary villain's that wasn't a full-blown ham-demon half the time. A mad scientist that was heavily implied to be able to raise the dead. Apparently he never came back as the writers literally just forgot about him for awhile until they played with the idea that he would be the one to resurrect Jerome . Until they just decided against it for some reason. And than again apparently he was going to team up with strange in later seasons but again never happened. So yeah really disappointed about that that they wasted one of their legit scary villians. But to be expected of Gothams writing.
"The show can become hypnotizingly boring while you wait for the characters you enjoy to show up and actually do something cool." I couldn't agree more with that statement.
The first season is definitely my favorite because it what nobody has; they focused on the mafia. Falcone, Maroni, Penguin- It was a very interesting storyline which i loved In the second season, Jerome won my heart. Me believing he was the joker (i'm always open to different versions) I couldn't be more pleased. But as they continued it seemed the show lost its focused; it had _too_ many characters with _too_ many storylines and it didn't know where to focused the most - resulting in a huge mess. I think the show would have been more popular if they didn't force all the characters together. On another note: *please make part 3*
As someone who doesn’t have any friends who watch Gotham either I can totally relate to you. But I honestly can’t even in good faith recommend this show to them, mostly because of a lot of the reasons you point out. I wouldn’t even subject myself to the show but I’m a sucker for Batman content and have a hard time starting a show and not seeing how it concludes. One of my biggest gripes with the show is also Barbara. I’m all for having strong female characters but his character in such constant change that it drives me nuts. I think the show runners love the actress so much that they wanna keep her in the show but her arc is all over the place. One of my nitpicks with the show was their handling of Harvey Dent. They introduced him as a young lawyer (I think?) way back in season one and then abandoned the character (I think the actor went on to other projects so maybe that had something to do with it). They really should’ve made the character a peer of Bruce so we could see their friendship grow, despite us knowing their eventual fates. Hell I would’ve even gave them a pass if they retconned his character, god knows they’ve done it before. Thank you so much for the video! I totally agree with your entire list. Look forward to your potential future videos!
Rhinosaurus2 I agree that Harvey as a peer of Bruce would have been better. I think that it would have been a lot more interesting if more of the future villains would have been in Bruce’s age range, Instead of just Selina and a three episode appearance of Tommy Elliot,
I agree. I keep watching it, but I wouldn't recommend it. The writing is lazy and ridiculous. Also, Barbara killed her parents and others, and we're supposed to just forget all that
"Oh no! My brakes aren't working and I'm slowly driving towards a train! I better not...do anything...like spin the wheel around so at most I crash into a wall, at best I do a cool skid."
I feel like the writers wanted Ed and Oswald's relationship to be similar to Hannibal and Will's from the NBC Hannibal tv show but they backed out halfway through. Thanks, I hate it!
Oh man am I the only one who liked the Balloonman episode. Not gonna lie, I didn't know how many weather balloons it'd take to lift a person so I never really questioned it (too much Metal Gear maybe), but I can't really defend it having seen how many it'd actually take to lift a person But I still like the idea of these one-off cases that are pretty much just regular criminals with the exception of one gimmick. Start it off small before you get to the straight up murder clowns, plant powers, and freeze guns. And I liked him being a weird predecessor to Batman, a vigilante who goes after corrupt officials and uses a bit of theatricality to send a message. Gotham needs someone like the Balloonman, but the Balloonman himself isn't even close to competent enough to be what Batman ends up being. Maybe he would've worked better later on in the season, since the previous two episodes had just been a regular crime drama without any gimmicks. Also 23:19 #LetQuinnSayFuck
So did Bullock face any consequences at all for sending Balloon Man off on one of his own balloons? Because while I'm no legal expert nor do I have any experience in lawe enforcement, I'm really, really sure that what he did there was crossing some sort of line there.
Can we also talk about how the Poison Ivy stuff is creepy as hell because she is still technically teenager Ivy's brain? Like, making a teenager have a adult's body and then making their character a seductress is SUPER skeevy
I kinda liked fish. I just hate what they are doing with most characters. (Resurecting them everytime they die but for some reason someone stays dead sometimes)
csaj egy ember I remember when the show began I was dismissive of Fish (I was a snobby guy who was like, “who is this non canonical Batman character?!!”) but she grew on me and by the time her character died on the show I was like, “aw I’m gonna miss her.” The actress really gave her all for the character, even if the material was subpar at times
@@Rbastian23 +Fish was a badass. I always chuckle at the scene where she is resurected and remembers who she was and sais "my name is Fish Mooney, bitch!"
csaj egy ember SPOILER FOR ANYONE NOT CAUGHT UP I really liked how they tricked us into think Jeremiah died though. They didn’t have any crazy bringing him back to life bits. It was simply a trick and I loved it.
My reasons I don't like the show 1. It starts killing the Waynes not letting us know who the hell they are like a prequel should 2. The animated series focused more on the villains back story rather than a show that is exactly supposed to do so 3. Rarely even back story on Gotham 4. Bruce is a whiney brat 5. Rushing 6. References to shit that hasn't even happened yet
I watched the whole series so it's been a while since the Balloon Man. Yes there's a big Rogues Gallery but S01 E03 is too early for any of them. We want to watch them develop. So the Balloon Man (BM to his pals) is a weirdo that prepares us for the idea that Gotham's residents can be a bit theatrical in their mental breakdowns. Like the fat guy in the vaguely Batman looking cowl from early on. Maybe Balloon Man was meant to inspire Kite Man. - And Harvey wanted Jim to let go because of the risk of shooting him in the balloon knot. - I loved the series, but I can see it's flaws. I'm just good at developing a head cannon that allows me to hang in. Like Firefly's suit material needed to be cured to reach it's final invulnerability. When that girl peed herself it was like adding carbon to hot iron to make steel. - Love your videos, your comedic timing and presentation are incredible.
Every time I remember that Ed is my favorite character I think about why I like him the only actual good phase he had was in season one with the good guy/bad guy thing but it was still pretty meh, And also I hate Bruce’s relationship with Selina because I really like them in the comics but they just seem off in the show, and I just realized why am I watching this videos I pretty much hate the entire show but I still love watching the plot ruin itself over and over
For me it’s the “joker problem” I understand there’s legal problems and they can’t use the name and certain aspects but it annoys me that characters like the penguin and riddler get solid motivation and arcs but Bruce’s most iconic villain can’t. The Valeska twin thing is okay, a little lazy but I feel it would’ve been better if it was one guy from the beginning who along with Bruce and Selina grow to become the character we all love.
Im absolutely loving your channel! It's been 10 months since my 6 year old daughter passed away and I'm still in that frozen stage although I feel like I'm starting to thaw. The way Freeze mourns is a little extreme.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a long road when you loss someone that important to you, thawing out isn't easy. (Btw thank you for your compliment, it means a lot.)
thank you so much for deconstructing the stupid Kristen Clone ark and why it was bad. However, i gotta disagree with you on the balloon man thing. Thats what made me invested in the show, but thats only because i love dumb cartoony nonsense. Also you perfectly summarize why Barbra as a character is so frustrating to me, as well as the whole thing with Ivy. Over all i feel like the show would have been better off embracing its differences from traditional batman cannon as opposed to striking a really weird, unsatisfying balance between the two. After all, the people who don't like it cause its different are never going to accept it, but most of its audience just loves it for what it is (im pretty sure most of the people who watch gotham aren't even big on batman). Like, i feel like a lot of the inconsistencies with the characters were caused by the writers not wanting them to develop past a certain point so that they could still fit the traditional batman canon, when in reality the show is already far from traditional. Instead of be true to THIS rendition of the character, they try to make them act like OTHER versions of the character when it doesnt fit. I think thats how Ed got ruined for a lot of people who had been longtime fans of the show, only to have his personal growth be trampled over and reset again and again. Anyways, great video! im glad someone's finally give Gotham the analysis it deserves, even if its frustrating at times :)
I think that Barbera never settling on a character type is her character, she is mentally and emotionally unstable, her mood and feelings about something swing around like a revolving door causing her to change what she is trying to be constantly.
When this show basically just started throwing in all the Batman villains they could, even when it made no sense, why not just make a cool Batman show?
Still no Harley Quinn, yet, though - right? Or have she made her appearance in one of the later seasons, that I haven't watched? I dread to think what the writers would do with her, then again Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey already pretty much ruined her character.
Your explanation and analysis of Mr. Freeze almost brought me to tears. You’ve truly managed to help me understand something about his character, about Gotham as a show, and about grief. Thanks for that, and keep up the good work!!!
I like the show anyways. Its just like the comics. Random and dumb criminals, people breaking out of Arkham every second, exagerrated plots. Its basically a live action comic and its fun to watch. The incredible casting and performances makes me forgive the shows boring moments, and I don't think it's poorly written either. Yes, Barbaras character is messed up, but throughout the dc timeline, nearly every person in the universe has become an animal, each version of robin has become the joker and pretty much everyone has had a baby with pretty much everyone. Thats why I like Gotham. Its brave enough to bring characters back to life and clone them, destroy Gotham and rebuild it. Im so sad it ended 😭😭
@@fightingmedialounge519 It's exactly hpw the Batman comics and all superhero comics work in general. Everyone comes back to life except for uncle Ben and Batman's parents.
I was underwhelmed by Bruce Wayne, but I loved the chemistry between Cobblepot and Nygma. Bullock and Gordon really fit into their roles, and I really liked the casting for The Joker. They actually talked about Alfred having a backstory, and then I was amazed that it turned out he is played by The Doctor (Who III)'s son, Sean Pertwee.
I'm surprised that the court of Owls plot was never mentioned, as it greatly undermines Bruce's future character development and eventual origin of Batman by having it being his destiny imposed on him by an evil organisation that ironically still gets their way by the end of Season 4 because no one stays dead in this show. Its for this reason that I despise this show's Ra's al Ghul because he feels very unnecessary and overcomplicates the secondary Joker arch for no reason. Like the first death scene was actually rather fitting, as it was our first look at how Bruce's 'destiny' had transformed him into this 'Dark Knight' who can sneak into a high security prison completely undetected and kill the prisoner
Great breakdown of Mr. Freeze. You have a strong understanding of his character, and you're right, they disrespected his character by turning him into a random thug

Holy shit, that sounds like an amazing show I wish I could watch.
@@abbywolffe4114 That sounds like a pretty interesting premise. What's the book called?
"They're flappin' their wings, but they're not goin' anywhere"
Amazing.
This line lives rent free in my head
my confusion with barbara is how did it even happen, she gets kidnapped by a serial killer and suddenly shes a whole different person nothing made her that way she just happened to become crazy out of nowhere for no reason at all with no explanation at all
You try getting kidnapped and staying the same person
That would've been so cool bruh can U be a writer on this show because the plot is just... Terrible
It might've been a plan, but was cut short.
@@Dagenspear You mean like she had another movie or TV show that she was contractually obligated to be in so they dropped the whole plot and killed her off quick because they ran out of her available time?

OMG SAME i was so confused when she just died with no follow up like i definitely thought she had a connection to the court of owls and they definitely set it up like that so i have no idea why they ended up cutting that plot short but its one of the most disapointing things that happened in gotham for me.
"Ed Nygma, the riddle-loving forensic scientist has a big crush on his coworker, Kristen Kringle.
Unfortunately for Ed, he has an alternative personality that has a big crush on murder."

"Let go of the metaphor, Jim!"
"NOOOOOO, I'LL NEVER LET GO OF THE PEOPLE OF GOTHAM!!!"
holy shit I love you please make videos for the rest of forever
I don't see it as a huge deal.
umm no. gotham is set in an entirely different universe. the villains' ages are irrelevant.
What about Joker 2019 lol. B*tch would be like 70 when Brucie is Batman. BTW great movie
@@loganf.07 yeah good movie. but, again, it's in its own universe, so the ages aren't really relevant.
@@sydnamon5986 personally I prefer to wait for Two Face until Batman.
"Batman created his villains" has been a dumb, nonsensical argument since forever, so I'm actually kinda glad that it isn't a part of Gotham.
That's equally hyperbolic xeahnort.
Also batman creating his villains was argument that started around the time the 90's series was airing.
I kind of love the bit where Riddler and Penguin capture each other back and forth in the car. It's just so goofy.
Writer 1: So I was thinking we would resolve this character’s arc by having-
Writer 2: Clones.
Writer 1: But-
Writer 2: *C L O N E S*
Also, again, Barbara is really the character that lived too long to the point where the writers really don't know where to take them. Like Jerome should have killed her, or something like that.
I think after Barbra enventually does die,Jim is gonna name his child after her.Barbra Gordon, from the comics.

It irritates me how logical that is and the fact that it wasn't used
Even if Nygma figured out what Penguin did, he can't really blame him if he is the one himself to lose control and kill his gf.
Big Money Mike yeah he was fun at some times and other times he isn't
I have an alternative explanation. I think there are different writers of the show, and they are in odds with one another. So whenever one of them makes an importan plot-change choice, the next guy just forgets about it, dismisses it or makes any kind of crap to eliminate it from the canon altogether (including characters' deaths). They are not respecting each other these script writers. And that's why Gotham has incredible, beautiful plotlines that follow their own inner logic, but the show (and even the arcs) are all over the place. Its overarching logic just doesn't work.
He even managed to make almost enjoyable that super cringey moment when Ed daydreams about Penguin singing an homoerotic song to seduce him...
This show sounds like Batman's rogues' gallery trying to "It was just a prank, bro" each other and...that kind of makes me want to watch it?

Or for however many times a character "dies" and is then resurrected.
Also you can't just walk into the office area of police stations, meaning that the GCPD has just about the shittiest security. A god damn ranger station in the middle of butt fuck nowhere probably has better security, and it would literally just be a locked door.
haah true. Anyone can take over the GCPD!
The GCPD and Wayne Manor are the least secure places in the city.

Young Justice has the human props problem too. Characters are brought in and partially fleshed out and then just kind of stick around doing nothing besides being extended cameos or cute nods. Also, funnily enough, Titans also has that colour saturation/lighting problem.
That can happen when characters aren't the focus.
I’m shocked you didn’t bring up the build up of Lee and Ed getting together just for it to blow up in our faces.
Yo didn't Lee have a baby? Jim sees her and her baby right? But then she just comes back to Gotham not pregnant and with no baby... I feel like I'm the only one who was confused about that part...
@@chloeelimam3899 I think she had either a miscarriage... or gave up the baby?
She had a miscarriage. It was a pretty important part of the plot
@@j.r.b.7585 Thank you! I wasn’t quite sure what happened.
Oh Gosh, I would have choosen Barbara too! I do agree, she is really poorly written.
Thank you for actually explaining all your dislikes and flaws.
The Dollmaker was such a wasted villian.
I thought Isabella was just Kristen Kringle, but resurrected bc somebody wanted to mess with him. And her brain was jumbled bc she was literally dead.
"The show can become hypnotizingly boring while you wait for the characters you enjoy to show up and actually do something cool." I couldn't agree more with that statement.
The first season is definitely my favorite because it what nobody has; they focused on the mafia. Falcone, Maroni, Penguin-
It was a very interesting storyline which i loved
In the second season, Jerome won my heart.
I think that it would have been a lot more interesting if more of the future villains would have been in Bruce’s age range,
Instead of just Selina and a three episode appearance of Tommy Elliot,
Samee
I agree. I keep watching it, but I wouldn't recommend it. The writing is lazy and ridiculous. Also, Barbara killed her parents and others, and we're supposed to just forget all that
I totally erased The Balloonman from my memory... Great vid and so glad I subbed!
Honestly I quit about half way through season 3...got tired of "how can we screw over jim gordan today"

Plus Balloonman wore a Prof. Pyg mask so that made him pretty cool.
@@wdcain1 Oh yeah he did for a hot second there, didn't he? And then we got, actual Pyg like 3 seasons later.
I liked the Bolloonman too
So did Bullock face any consequences at all for sending Balloon Man off on one of his own balloons? Because while I'm no legal expert nor do I have any experience in lawe enforcement, I'm really, really sure that what he did there was crossing some sort of line there.

I loved your character analysis of Mr Freeze, Ive never heard someone go so deep into his character. SUBBED!
Can we also talk about how the Poison Ivy stuff is creepy as hell because she is still technically teenager Ivy's brain? Like, making a teenager have a adult's body and then making their character a seductress is SUPER skeevy

Same for me, Fish was kinda entertaining!
csaj egy ember I remember when the show began I was dismissive of Fish (I was a snobby guy who was like, “who is this non canonical Batman character?!!”) but she grew on me and by the time her character died on the show I was like, “aw I’m gonna miss her.” The actress really gave her all for the character, even if the material was subpar at times

SPOILER FOR ANYONE NOT CAUGHT UP
I really liked how they tricked us into think Jeremiah died though. They didn’t have any crazy bringing him back to life bits. It was simply a trick and I loved it.
My reasons I don't like the show
1. It starts killing the Waynes not letting us know who the hell they are like a prequel should
2. The animated series focused more on the villains back story rather than a show that is exactly supposed to do so
3. Rarely even back story on Gotham
4. Bruce is a whiney brat
5. Rushing
6. References to shit that hasn't even happened yet
Honestly, I love this show. It has bad plots sometimes and really awkward cgi, but the character like Nygma make it worthwhile for me.
me watching Gotham: "god, I love it, but I HATE it"
I watched the whole series so it's been a while since the Balloon Man.
What about some of the rly rly minor ones. Like Calendar man?
Every time I remember that Ed is my favorite character I think about why I like him the only actual good phase he had was in season one with the good guy/bad guy thing but it was still pretty meh, And also I hate Bruce’s relationship with Selina because I really like them in the comics but they just seem off in the show, and I just realized why am I watching this videos I pretty much hate the entire show but I still love watching the plot ruin itself over and over
Let me introduce you to my friends, comma and point. They can become your friends aswell.
I literally haven't watched this series but i'm so attracted by the bromance that i'm willing to sit through this.
Oh no
Bad news for ya buddy.

The line "pitch and yzma making out against a steel refrigerator" is a testament to how underrated this channel is with only 65k subscribers
thank you so much for deconstructing the stupid Kristen Clone ark and why it was bad.
"Let go of the metaphor, Jim!"
I laughed.
"flesh space" followed by "once or twonce" is the best thing ever.
@@LadyDoomsinger She made an appearance in the last season, but has a different name. Not sure if you watched the season yet

Your explanation and analysis of Mr. Freeze almost brought me to tears. You’ve truly managed to help me understand something about his character, about Gotham as a show, and about grief. Thanks for that, and keep up the good work!!!
Hands down the most entertaining show reviewer I've ever watched. Kudos to Quinn.
That sounds like a badly written comic.
@@fightingmedialounge519 It's exactly hpw the Batman comics and all superhero comics work in general. Everyone comes back to life except for uncle Ben and Batman's parents.
@@dustingaethje1332 not exactly. Plenty of unpopular or obscure characters stay dead.
Gotham has so many frustrating points but I just LOVE the casting so much, the actors and actresses make this show so much more
I was underwhelmed by Bruce Wayne, but I loved the chemistry between Cobblepot and Nygma.
It is refreshing to see a fun, literate, and interesting character and plot analysis. Nice work!
