How-To Custom Sun Visor

- In this Video I'll show you how to remake your boring faded vehicle sun visor over into a custom one of a kind refurbished sun visor. For this video we'll recover a sun visor from a Jeep Cherokee XJ but even if you own a Cadillac I'm sure you'll learn something from watching this video. You'll need some material from the fabric store, I prefer fleece; and some 3M super77 spray adhesive, and a few other goodies...well just watch the video.

Matt--you saved me! I was about to go to my local auto upholstery shop with both visors opened up and with old, dingy material removed to have them finish the job. I searched for UA-cams but the other two caused more broken snap tabs than your method would have. That's the reason to cut off the old fabric--to better get to those tabs. I went through two cutouts but couldn't get the mirror in right until seeing how you did it. When you said it took only 15 minutes, I started swearing since I spent hours of trial and error. Success tonight! The last one should take a lot less time. I wimped out of doing my own headliner but it was pricey to get done since I have an aftermarket sunroof with headliner cover. I had the shop give me the remaining fabric to do the visors myself. Fantastic video. You are the BEST!

I wish my moms car was so easy.... A 2002 Saturn SL2, the material was starting to wear out, and we didn't want to buy new ones as the visors were still tight and no issues other than the material. So with her love of Eeyore I used some material we already had, and used the "no sew heat tape". The visors came out good (not as good as your visors in the video) and she was happy with them (which is all that matters), that was 7 years ago, and still look good ! Now that I am doing a entire update on the car (new paint, interior, insulation, and sound system) I think I will do this method, as it looks so much better....

I wouldn't use the pattern myself but I think it was a good choice for the videos because it gives good contrasts as opposed to a single color like black or grey. Love your videos man keep up the good work!

Good job! I have done pretty same operations few years ago, but i glued up all plastic surface to get the tough contact between material and plastic!

one suggestion: Im a car guy very far from having sewing skills but I do remember home economics from middle school. In that class we had to sew a pin cusion and when you trace a pattern like that it helps to use those needles with the ball end on them to hold the materials together rather than just your hand. Thank you for the video. I have never seen the inside of a sun visor.

Hey Matt, always enjoy your videos. I am changing the interior color of my 95 XJ Sport. Already did the headliner and was wondering about the visors. Not sure if i'm going to recover mine or upgrade to the ones with lighted mirrors. The wires are already there, just tucked away. Been spending time at my local salvage yard gathering the missing parts I need and there is one there that has the color I am changing mine to except it is a 97-01. If the visors are the same I'll grab them tomorrow and install them, otherwise I'll recover mine. The one thing I'm going to try different than your method is I will lay the uncovered visor on the material to trace instead of the old material. Looking forward to your next project. Mine is called "Project Bumble Jeep", it will be yellow with black accents when done. Even got a logo done for it and doing tee shirts for my helpers (with logo).
you made this look so easy. I tried it with a microsuede and i could not for the life of me get it to seat around the mirror. Also, did you grease the area around where the pivot mounts to the plastic? mine was filled with peanut butter looking grease when i opened it.
Why do I feel like if I try this I will end up making my visor worse? Where is my confidence?

The chances that any random sun visor will be constructed just like this particular visor? Pretty remote if you ask me! I am guessing that there are dozens of radically different constructs of sun visorsalldependant on brand/model/year

I have a 1996 jeep Cherokee SC 2 door model. It's has the big bay windows in the back. It doesn't have the greatest air flow and I live in Florida. What I'm asking is, have you done a video, or could you do a video on how to modify/ cut air vents in the back rooftop or right behind the bay windows, so I can get better air flow inside the jeep? But I would also like to be able to close the vents in case of rain or cold weather. Any feedback would help. Thanks!

You said your Jeep didn't have the mirrors, did it already have the wiring there or did you have to run the wiring or did you just say screw it?
why not just use the visor for the template?
Ik this is 4yrs old but it’s because the visor is smaller than the cloth material, it would be the wrong size
@@johnmancuso419 you see how the viser lays flat. If you put it on top of your fabric and then add your inch to the edges then cut. He didn't "need" the old cover.

Do u think 2nd gen Dodge Ram visors are like that...I was gonna paint them but I want them to match my suede headliner I just did...not sure if the visors come apart like that
why would you cut the material so badly instead of prying the visor apart just enough to get the complete material out or cut it around rhe seem to get the material out in one piece.
i have now got the idea from your video that if i cannot get the correct thickness of foam required for a task as small as this ill use fleece as a "foam" backing filler but nice job.

WHY that pattern?? I try to look past it and pay attention to the technique, but it's so hard..lol Good video though, as new visors like that are $130-$160 new. I have mine apart right now to fix light wires. I am sure you will have saved a lot of people money

Wish i could have seen this when i did my visors. I got a little rammy straight ripped the 2 halves apart at the seam and almost all the clips on the inside broke making the visor unusable. got to go to a junk yard and pick up some to redo it the right way now.

Do it however you like and whatever works.

Just a bit of advice - any pair of scissors that has ever been used to cut paper, will have a hard time cutting fabric. I crochet and sew and know this to be true. Almost any new pair of scissors, whether intended for fabric or not, will cut fabric and yarn without a problem...unless used to cut paper. Paper will dull them every time.
Those must be newer xj visors on my 87 it was just cardboard wraped over the bar it was a pain to do it without a sewing machine i made a new backing pad out of foam and than glued the canvas down with 3m glue 90 i belive is what i used the edges look bad but rest of it looks decent

Wait is this only for Jeeps or cars with lights in the visor because I had no idea sun visors opened up haha
when opening the visor there is a pin at the bottom corner remove it so you can open it up with out snapping that little pin

kluk666 I'm not sure how they do it in Poland but here they sell fabric mostly in 2 widths and I got the wider one which is about 58inches. They sell it by the yard which is about 3' so I got more than enough to do the XJ and the visors. I want to say I bought about 5 or 6 yards.
We got metric system so
58inches = about 1,5 metre
and 6 yards = about 5,5 metres

I only wondered how much do I have to get to cover all of it, and your knowledge and experience will definately help me a lot.

I broke half at least half the clips, so i shoved some glue in there and clamped it down, and the mirror is a real pain.
The Visor is NOT designed to be reopened on my 98 Gr Cherokee! The part of the visor designed to clip to the headliner is attached by a nail that is shoved in and there is no easy way to back it out of the holes that are on both the top and bottom part of the visor.

I'm not familiar with kashmere but maybe headliner glue, you can get it at the auto store... or the super77 is what I use.

If you have a Chevrolet sedan, forget about it. They have the mirror attached to the board - you can't get it off.

Alternative - walmart industrial strength velcro.
Rip old visor cover off, stick on velcro, use for organizing shit.
good thought but eventually in the heat that stuff will peel off and leave a sticky mess.
ive had mine like that for a year now, everything from 100+ in the summer, to -5 the other day, its held up fine
