WHAT'S ON THE SHELF WEDNESDAY | Balvenie 12 Year Doublewood! Gateway Scotch for bourbon drinkers!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year is one of the first whiskeys to implement a "finishing" cask maturation in 1993. Maturing primarily in Ex-Bourbon casks and then finishing for some added time in Sherry Oak casks, Balvenie 12 has a rich honey, vanilla and dried fruit characteristic that makes this scotch a great gateway for bourbon lovers everywhere. This is bottled at 86 proof and retails for about $50-$60 bucks.

It's not about the whiskey, it's the people you share it with!

On your recommendation, this was the first scotch I bought. It was delicious! Bottle lasted only for a week! Still going through your list of scotches for bourbon drinkers. Thanks again for expanding my horizons.
One of my absolute favorites
Nice drop this one very nice indeed.
That's was one of the first Scotch I've ever had. It's consistent a real good one to give to guests who appreciates quality
Just bought a bottle to try today after this video. It is pure excellence. What a great whisky.
I was a single malt scotch drinker long before moving to bourbon/rye. This has been one of my daily drinkers for decades and is certainly one I always recommend for someone wanting to try scotch no matter where they are coming from. It's just so well balanced and harmonious. Sure there are plenty of higher end bottlings that eclipse this but that doesn't diminish the pleasure of having a glass. It would be nice if they made a cask strength version for us proof hounds.
Great video man, I really enjoy when you do whiskies that aren’t only bourbons!
Sounds good, I’ll give it a try!
Love that and the regular 12 yr!
Awesome bottle, love The Balvenie double wood, and definitely a pick up when it's available!
Thx Jason, I enjoyed this and the 14yr quite a bit in mid 90's...I agree, good gateway into scotch...cheers.
One of my favorite Spey Side single malt also, their Peat Week is awesome. Well recommended!
Couldn’t agree more! Great price and overall experience. I keep this in my office for celebratory drinks with clients. Easy drinker for everyone that may not be crazy about whiskey. Cheers Jason
Catching your thoughts on this after 4 years of having this for the first time. And no surprise there, you still enjoy it. Absolutely agree this is perfect for Bourbon drinkers looking for a Scotch to try. Cheers 🤙🥃
Well done Mr. C. Even for your own experience grab a bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh. A cask strength Bourbon drinker's single malt. Cheers!
Nice review and spot on as usual. It's funny, for so long scotch and irish whiskey were my go to spirits w this Balvenie 12 one of my very faves. But after a cpl years exploring bourbon I'm bored by the categories. I don't know if it's the lower proofs but I find the complexities and finish to say even just a Knob 9yr or WT Rare Breed to be much more enjoyable and interesting than the scotches I was drinking. It's like water to me now.
Good review Jason. I've had this and prefer it over similar priced and aged Genfiddich or Glenlivet.
Beautiful
Hey J, this is a darn good scotch! I appreciate your thoughts on it (and the learning). I always recommend Compass Box Spice Tree as an affordable way for bourbon drinkers to get into some tasty scotch. Cheers! 🥃
Everyone recommended Sherry finished Scotch to me mostly after a friend surprised me with that really peaty, smoky Lagavulin maybe? I like peat and smoke. I can't do sherry finished stuff because to me it has an overwhelming bile note. I bought a few different bottles wondering why they tasked like vomit and then googled and I realized I apparently have a sensitivity to butyric acid (not sure on spelling). Learning new things thanks to Scotch! This bottle sounds super good and I wish we had a better Scotch joint around here because I'd at least try a pour and hope for the best.
I will begin by noting, I am not the biggest scotch drinker. For me it's Irish and bourbon. That said, when it comes to scotch I reach for an Islay before any because it is so raw and foreign to the others. Smoked toffee and sea brine in the rainy, Windy City spring time! But of any "mainland" I enjoy this Belvanie the most by far. It really is light and sweet. It's spiced cherry plumb fruit notes pair beautifully with butter cakes. Great review Jason.
Great review, thanks for posting it. I’m looking forward to trying this and comparing it to The Classic Laddie, JW Green Label, and Monkey Shoulder as “entry” Scotches to get my bourbon-loving brother into Scotch. P.S. my only issue here is your shirt: I admit I put pollutants in my coffee. ☕️ Cheers!
Can never go wrong with the Balvenie 14 yr.
I thought back recently, what was it that got me into my bourbon journey in 2015?
I recall about 8 months ago that it was a Balvenie tasting I went , my first whisky tasting as a matter of fact. (Even won a bottle of the 12 yr to pay for my ticket)
This video posted is actually very accurate to the facts.
Keep up the great work my brother, very impressed constantly with what you're bringing to the table.
I got this 2 days ago and it was $78. I've never had it before so hopefully it's up there with Laphroiag which is almost impossible to find where I'm at.
The 14yr carribean cask blows this one out of the water.
Will try that one next
My favorite out on the golf course. Great summer whiskey.
@@TheMashandDrum 15 yr single barrel sherry cask is where it's at for me, should be around 100. Haven't tried the carribean cask yet either but maybe that'll be next on my list
$83 here in PA 😂 Great pour though
Where’d you get your shirt? I love it!
If you're also doing Scotch like it seems, Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition is insanely good for the price ($24 at The Party Source in KY). It tastes like a $50+ bottle imo. 100 proof, dense and viscous mouthfeel, black pepper and lemon, and intense toffee/caramel. Just make sure it's the Prohibition Edition (the black bottle) and not the basic Cutty Sark...
That old elk sour mash scared me away with the price point. I hope I didn’t make a mistake
The Balvenie uses colorant, so a part of that "sherry" color is due to that.
Looks interesting and delicious, let's see it become available in Ohio
I’ve seen it in a few spots in the Columbus area
Getting some bourbon drinkers to try scotch or other spirits can be like getting a child who's a picky eater to try tomatoes. Of course, sometimes it's also that way with scotch drinkers trying a bourbon. In both situations the most important thing is to pick a character whisky. IMHO people who are into barrel proof bourbon should be introduced to cask strength sherry monsters, port finished malts and peated malts. Gateway malts are more for those who are new to sipping spirits.
Jason, what about the 12 yr toasted oak? Wondering how they would compare?
Have to check that one out.
Thanks Jason 👍 check out Horse Soldier
Stop trying to get Bourbon drinkers into Scotch! I've given up trying to get certain Bourbons and I can still find some limited release Scotch. Let them keep chasing Blanton's and leave the Scotch for me! Only partly kidding about this. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
I can see your fear though. Lol.
How does it pair with cigars?
Stellar combo with Hemingway Short Story
What is the peat like on it??? More of a non peated scotch fan.
There is no peat to this.
Oh god damnit….I’ve been pronouncing this wrong for the last 10 years. I always thought it was “BAHL-venny.” Man, I even thought I had researched this before so I didn’t look like an ass. A little more research proves that you’re saying it right.

Think I got it now.
Chris, I hear ya. Went crazy with that peaty, smoky scotch from Isss-Lay!! Who woulda thunk Eye-La!
haha, I've said it like you for 20yrs.....too ingrained to change now. I think the rule is that if you're not in Scotland you say it anyway you like. 😁
I hate tasting honey flavor from any kind whiskies
