  • This is a quick tip video on how to avoid sanding dust while finishing wood pieces on the lathe.
    I've first seen this technique on Carl Jacobson's channel: / @carljacobson
    He uses a mix of wax and oil, but I've used plain mineral oil and it works well enough.

    Great video! I like the tip. Would you share why you don’t mix the oil with paste wax like Carl does? Was it because you’re going for a final CA finish for outdoor durability?

    If they paper isn't clogging, I would think it means that the liquid is limiting the abrasives effectiveness of removing material. But, the clogging itself is also limiting the effectiveness... Its a balancing act..

    Does mineral oil raise wood fiber up like water does when conventional final wet sanding? Thanks.

    Ditch the sand paper, take two types of steel wool, coarsest and finest, dip them both in your preferred finish oil (i use regular olive oil) and then with a glove wrap around the stock, as it rotates. First three times, you'll burn the finish, but once you get the kick right, once a light oil-ok lacquer is applied, it almost looks like glass glazed on top of the wood.
    Best results are cherry (and all the exotics that fit in that color range, i can't remember the name of the wood exactly, but it has a very equal pattern which gives beautiful almost reflective like finishes once lacquered) and very milky looking wood types.
    I've even tried this method on red balsa (the denser part of the balsa tree) wood and it gives great finish.

    Реально хорошо получилось! Если не планируется красить, то это уже готовая отделка! А вот если под лакировку, то тогда можно красить только масляным лаком, что не очень хорошо.

    Thanks. With the mineral oil that remains on the timer does this impact negatively with any finishes? Cheers, David.

      For oil and wax finishes it should be ok. I also use superglue a lot as a finish and never had any problems with it. But you should experiment first to see how your finishes behave with this kind of treatment.

      water based finish will have issues with it, every finish with an apolar solvent (oils, mineral spirits or alcohol) should be ok.

    Thanks for the response. Sorry to be a pain, but actually the whole CA thing has me confused. CA is a type of "super glue" correct? How do you apply it without the applicator sticking?

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  6 років тому

      You use tissue paper, the best kind is the one used in the kitchen, paper towels I think they are called. There are lots of videos demonstrating this technique since it's used a lot in pen turning: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=super+glue+pen+finish

    • @KingNast
      @KingNast 6 років тому

      Spencer Bass I thought it would stick too, but it doesn't. It's weird. Just make sure to use the thinnest glue you can find. I used gel CA and it got all lumpy and I had to do a lot of sanding. It still came out like glass just with 600 grit, then a buffing wheel

      Thanks to Carl I keep a can of paste wax/mineral oil mush on my shelf at all times.
      BUT ... I have NOT used it after the CA goes on. Only for pieces that need a satin/oil finish. After CA I just wet sand (with water) to 12000, apply two coats of plastic polish and call it good. I don’t understand how the oil helps a CA finish. Can you explain?
      I don’t apply much of anything with paper any more except CA, and then I only use paper shop towels, the traditionally blue ones. For everything else, especially the polish, I use clean cotton rags. Anything else sheds into the finish more than I care to deal with.

    I wonder how this would work using BLO followed by a CA finish. A lot of people will apply BLO to a pen AFTER sanding followed by or mixed with thin CA. The BLO acts as an accelerator, just not as fast as the spray stuff - that's my understanding of why they use BLO

    Why do you use a super glue finish I’ve never heard of that before?

  • @ArmouredKat

    Mineral oil soaked wood. That'll be fun to varnish.

  • @myster.ejones1306
    @myster.ejones1306 6 років тому

    Is it merely an 'extraction issue! Or does the oil give a superior result?
    Does it have to be mineral oil? I'd initially think 'teak oil' as my first choice!
    thanking you in anticipation. E ,☺

    • @TheSmallWorkshop

      It's mainly to avoid fine airborne dust. It might also leave a better finish, not sure, but mostly I use it to avoid dust. The oil here is not the finish, it's just there to moist the wood and to clear the dust away from clogging up the sandpaper, kinda like knifemakers use wet sandpaper. That's why I use mineral oil, it's cheap, easily available and it does not harden.

    • @myster.ejones1306

      The Small Workshop. I get that, makes sense, , does most of the mineral oil come out before finishing, would you clean it, or is it OK to mix it with the final coat? Thanks ☺

    Would that work too for hand sanding, but not on a lathe ? Or would that make just a big mess ?

    • @TheSmallWorkshop

      Chris I haven't tried hand sanding wood with oil but I've sanded metal with wet sandpaper by hand and it's really messy.

      Micro-mesh ai incercat cu ulei? daca da, cum se comporta?

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  6 років тому +1

      Nu am micro mesh, cel mai fin pe care il folosesc e norton wet/dry de 1500 grit si se comporta foarte bine, practic am slefuit finisajul la 20 de manere ca cel din clip cu o singura bucatica de marimea unui timbru, cred ca se si vede in ultima scena din clip. Totusi la cat costa micro mesh eu nu as experimenta pe ele :)

      Multumesc de raspuns. Micromesh se poate spala, desi nu stiu cum se spala de ulei. Orientativ - eu am cumparat un set de 9 buretei micromesh de 5x5cm (aprox) cu 10 lire. :P

      In the final shot the handle is presented finished with CA, which happened off camera. I just showed it for viewers to see how the wood looks after sanding, since the gloss finish shows the flaws in the wood.
