    Clear & detailed explanation of how to install the sensor switch. Much better information on what each of wire is for, which is not available in the device's User Manual

    Maestro motion switches are super helpful, I installed them around my house last year. I have a long hallway that I get spooked having to fumble for the switch - the motion sensor works perfect! You can also program the switch to "learn" light levels by turning it off if it comes on during a time when the area has light already (so you can use it in a room with windows). You can also have more switches connected to 1 light circuit (such as ny long hallway has 2 switches controlling 1 light) - it requires 1 motion switch as the primary and a Maestro "Companion" switch as secondary (IMPORTANT to know; you can buy this as hardware stores or online). This switch is truly magical and enhanced my quality of life. Thanks for covering it!

    Great video! As an electrician it is better practice to use a lineman's to twist your wires together...this will eliminate any loose or potential hazards inside the box. Furthermore, for light switches; Yes stabbing the back is not really common because switches fail the most and need to be switched out more frequently, but more common for receptacles. Cheers!

    Nice video as always Chris. I do have 3 questions:
    1. Can this be used as a replacement for one switch on a three way (two switches, one light)?
    2. Do you know how "low" the sensor beam goes? Do you think a cat or dog will trip it?
    3. I may have missed this but do you know the max amount of time the light can stay on once triggered?
    I have Lutron Caseta throughout my house and love the automation with Amazon Alexa.
    Keep making the informative and entertaining videos.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  2 роки тому

      1. Yes, you can do this but you’ll need to keep the other switch in the same position for the motion sensor to work.
      2. I haven’t tested it but I’d bet a pet would trigger it.
      3. Max on time is 30 minutes.

      If you read the instructions it's incredibly simple to program.
      Hold the button down until it flashes. How many times you let it flash sets the timer until it turns off.
      If you want to change the mode from auto on/auto off to manual on / auto off you take the cover off and do the same thing with the little side button. It's all on the sheet. But out of the box they come set for like 5 minutes on the timer and on the auto on/off mode.
      I just installed two and it took like 10 minutes. One is for a bathroom light and it goes auto on/off and the other is for the exhaust fan which is manual on / auto off

    The problem with this video is that it shows installation with four wires in the wall...green, white, black, red. Most switches will only have black, white and green and the white is often the return hot-leg, usually identified with a piece of black tape. (As I'm taking a nap I recalled that It's safer to have the hot leg stop at the switch so the unit is not energized because people can get shocked even though the switch is off. However, it depends upon whether the hot leg is in the ceiling or in the wall to the switch.) Watch other videos on UA-cam to get your information for those.

      Rule number 1: always wire a new switch the same way as the old one.

      @bama1gem because it was connected to the switch, that white wire is NOT A NEUTRAL. You should connect both of those wires to the black wires on the motion switch. Then connect your ground to the bare wire AND the one with the green sleeve over the white wire.

    Doesn't seem very sensitive. Claims 180 yet it didn't detect the door opening. It only came on once you entered the room. I'm having to replace an old switch that died on me and it would turn on the split second I opened my door. None of these new one's I've tried will do that. They either wait until I enter the room or there's a huge delay in turning on. I hate walking into my garage and having to wait for the light to come on. There's no telling what the kids left on the floor.

    • @handydadtv
      @handydadtv  Рік тому

      It’s an infrared sensor so I don’t know if I’d expect it to detect a door moving since it’s the same temperature as it’s surroundings. I think it turns on when it sees my hand opening the door. But it’s quick, in my opinion.

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay Рік тому

      @@handydadtv I'll give it a shot. Haven't tried this one yet. Yeah, my old one would kick on if I just flung my door open. Or it would come on if my garage door opened. Sure was nice having the garage lights come on instead of the two crappy bulbs in the garage opener.

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay Рік тому +1

      @@handydadtv When it comes to IR, temp doesn't matter. Anything moving distorts it's heat field. Plus objects will typically always be a different temp then the surrounding air. Luckily this one is a winner! I tried to use the ambient light option but even after training it that was a fail. So just straight auto on/off. The split second my door is even 6 inches open the light come on.
      After reading a lot of reviews and keeping track of who stated they had a neutral wire, it seems like those having the neutral wire are having a better experience. It might be that it's powering the unit more and allows the unit to be more responsive versus using the ground leech method.

      If both of those wires were connected to the switch, you don’t have a neutral wire in that box. One of the wires is line and the other is load (depends on how the electrician wired it).
      The directions show what to do.
      You’ll connect those wires to the black wires on the motion switch. Then connect the other two to ground. It uses low enough power that you can use the ground in lieu of a neutral.
