In the games, Mewtwo is the creation of Blaine and Mr. Fuji from Lavendertown, but because the Pokemon was too strong and difficult to control, it destroyed the Pokemon Mansion and left. After that, Mr. Fuji retired and founded the Pokemon Home for orphaned and abandoned Pokemon. This is what you can get out of Pokemon's backstory through games alone, and the Pokemon company itself has supported this, for example in the Pokemon Origins short series.
Kind of interesting how the last two Kanto gym leaders(Blaine and Giovanni) both have connections to Mewtwo. Blaine is implied to be a scientist who contributed to the creation of Mewtwo(They are outright connected on a genetic level in the manga). Giovanni, well... Pretty obvious.
Most ppl don’t know that the USA/english version is missing a lot of context from the Japanese version of the Mewtwo movie. Much more darker and brings a lot of light to mewtwo
I really feel like you’re right about it being a retcon since Mewtwo isn’t really mentioned until this additional media comes about later. Also the fact that team rocket’s villainy still holds up without Mewtwo even being there (as I saw in your first video).
I really loved your idea on Dr. Fuji helping them out of guilt. His pain drove him to do something he regretted but he’s still a good guy who loves Pokémon and was able to realize what they were doing was wrong.
There's a guy called Pedro Araujo who made a Red Pokemon Series and Mewtwo and Giovanni had a more literal connection. It's very good story telling, and is very good animate
I am used to using retcon specifically when the retcon contradicts the prior continuity. I consider this sort of change to the narrative "filling the plotholes" or "filling the gaps in the plot" instead of a retcon, as both the new and old continuities can coexist. That said, Rainbow Rocket Giovanni was an epic reveal
@@marcopohl4875 nah, without a change in continuity that is non-compatible with the prior canon I would not consider it a retcon. A retcon done right would be when Kingdom Hearts added the Nobodies, retconning what the Heartless were understood to be while greatly expanding the lore and storytelling possibilities of the series. The change in definition in incompatible and created some weirdness with the existence of Namine which needed some further retconning to make sense, but also gave us the framework for later plotlines. The Giovanni-Mewtwo lore was simply adding lore to the gaps in a preexisting story, layered on top of the old without needing to change it in order to fit. A retcon is a retroactive continuity, aka a change to what was canon, simply adding to canon without changing the preexisting canon is a different thing. Expanding upon canon is different from trading out canon
Something to note with the Giovanni/Mewtwo relationship, it's only ever used with the alt timeline Giovanni from USUM and never the one from Kanto that we fight. Pokemon Masters treats it as more symbiotic, where they tend to bring the thought up a lot that "Power is Power/friendship can be built on good or evil"
Mewtwo Returns I had on VHS as a kid, and it really was a favorite of mine. All the puns were great, but also it reinforced the concept that everyone deserves to be able to live in peace, despite their origins.
I don't like to think of it as a retcon, the master ball is designed after Mewtwo in terms of color scheme so I see this as a link to what Giovanni wanted to do with the master ball.
Mewtwo Strikes Back first released in Japan July 18th, 1998. Shortly after on September 17th 1998, the Pokemon anime released episode 63 "Battle of the Badge". In this episode, Mewtwo is seen being used by Giovanni to defeat Gary in the Viridian Gym. Afterwards he leaves on a mission with Mewtwo, leaving Jessie and James in charge. Later in episode 67 "Showdown at the Poke-corral" released October 8th 1998, Team Rocket is returning to their base, only to witness Mewtwo blow it up and fly off, as seen in the movie. Interestingly, this episode and the previously mentioned one, released in America in September 1999, roughly a month before the English version of "Mewtwo Strikes Back" was released. I imagine this was done to hype up the mystery of the film.
@DrTimes99 This story is actually even more interesting when you consider the original episode plan. Remember, due to the incident from the Porygon episode at the end of 1997, Pokemon was off air in Japan for three months. Theater plans are difficult to change so the Pokemon movie had to air that summer in Japan no matter what, but because the show was now three months behind their plans had to change. If I recall correctly, in the original plans Ash was supposed to encounter Mewtwo for the first time during the Viridian gym episode, and the movie would follow up on that. Due to the delay it was rewritten so Ash would never actually see Mewtwo in those episodes and he'd see him for the first time in the movie. I think they liked that better in the end anyway since it makes the movie more standalone, but it's cool the TV series still preserved Mewtwo's appearance to an extent by having Gary fight him and Giovanni. The later US airing matching up the timing to be more like what the original plan in Japan was supposed to be is a fun coincidence.
For the “evil teams” that aren’t that evil like yell and Star I think you should create a new ranking called vigilante because they are sort of vigilantes of their region in a way I don’t think it’s fair to compare them to the actual evil teams Vigilante or antihero Wouldn’t be fair to call them the “worst” when they are doing something completely different If they’re misguided they probably shouldn’t be in this series and should get their own thing
I liked the lain books on Mew and Mewtwo in the mansion of Cinnabar City. To edit, I question why you want to scry from the first book, the Bible. It does not reflect the world as we live in it to me.
Dissappointing a bit actually. Do the research better. The connection and reason for mewtwo started woth madam boss which was giovanni mother. She asked myamoto which is jessies mother to find mew and which she never came back from south america. Giovanni enchanced on his mother's intentions when he ruled TR

I don't remember seeing anything about Blain being involved in Mewtwo's inception/creation in the games (or any media)

Giovanni reminds me of Gus Fring from Breaking Bad…he fears no one, not even Mewtwo
9:11 the picture of Dr. Fuji is also in the original Red/Blue versions. It was not added to the remakes cuz of the movie.

mewtwo returns was indeed counted as a movie here in the west but it wasnt released into theaters. it was direct to VHS

Or you could say what you're describing is a Retcon done wrong and this is an example of a Retcon done right.

For those that do not know, RetCon means Retroactive Continuity.

It's crazy how anyone could think Han was somehow wrong for safeguarding himself against a known murderer talking shit to his face

Interesting, I never played Ultra Sun/Moon and am not really familiar with the anime so I was basically unaware of this connection
