Now, let's explore this part of Portugal🤎
Alcobaça is a city located in district of Leiria with approximately 18,000 residents.
Municipality is 408.14 square km and a population of 54,973, making it the second most populous municipality in the West region of Portugal.
Alcobaça lies in the valleys of the Rivers Alcoa and Baça, which according to some authors is the origin of its name. It has also been suggested that it was the Arabic name of the place which was split to name the two rivers.
The city was granted its status in 1995 and is renowned for the Royal Abbey of the Alcobaça Monastery, a significant draw for tourists.
The municipality comprises 13 parishes and is surrounded by Marinha Grande to the north, Leiria, Porto de Mós, and Rio Maior to the east, Caldas da Rainha to the southwest, and Nazaré to the west. Notably, Nazaré is enclosed by Alcobaça on land.
Alcobaça features two segments of Atlantic coastline, located in the northwest and southwest. The area includes several towns such as Benedita, São Martinho do Porto, Alfeizerão, Cela, Pataias, and Aljubarrota.
The region boasts a diverse landscape of residential areas, agricultural fields, bushes, and forests, with a population density higher than the national average.
A prime spot for panoramic views of the city and its surrounding fields is the hill with the ruined castle. Another great viewpoint is the churchyard of Capelinha de Santa Rita in the Serra do Monte in Coz.
Alcobaça is about 100 kilometers north of Lisbon and 90 kilometers south of Coimbra, making it accessible from two of Portugal's major cities.
Alcobaça's economy is driven by several key activities, including fruit cultivation-particularly Maçã de Alcobaça and Pêra-rocha do Oeste-pig farming, and the production of red clay pottery, and glassware. The plastic mold industry, cement manufacturing, and tourism are also vital.
A traditional dish from Alcobaça is chicken na púcara, a stew featuring chicken pieces in a special sauce, served with white rice and French fries.
For desserts, the region is known for bundles of eggs, delicacies from Frei João, and egg pudding from the Alcobaça monastery.
    INTERESTING FACTS:
The Alcobaça Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in 1153 by the first Portuguese king, Afonso I. It is one of the best examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Europe and houses the tombs of King Pedro I and his beloved Inês de Castro, whose tragic love story is legendary in Portuguese history.
The region around Alcobaça is famous for its wine production, particularly the local red wine known as "Vinho de Alcobaça." The fertile soils and favorable climate contribute to the high quality of the wines produced here.
Average price for real estate. For buying 2000 euros per square meter, what is a steal for what this place has to offer and long term rent - 11 euros per square meter.
I hope you will enjoy this episode and see you next time!!!🫡
    Tchau!!!

Hi, if you enjoyed the monastery there you should definitely go and view the Monastery in Batalha, but try and do it on a cloudy day as this will give the most authentic experience of the architecture. It is also a UNESCO heritage site. Manter-se bem!

I've heard and seen pictures of Batalha. Indeed, it can top Alcobaça. I'll look up how far it is from me. Thanks for the suggestion! 🫡

Alcobaça is what made us seriously consider moving away from the sea... we were living in Nazare and our sons were at school there... we often went there for coffee and walks to escape the madness of Nazare and soon realised that it made sense to check out inland Portugal... we love Alcobaça!

      Hey, man 🫡
I didn't know you were living in Nazaré. How long time you lived there? Nazaré was also on my radar, but you say it's too much?
Alcobaça completely exceeded my expectations. I love it there also 👍🇵🇹

@@millionplacesoneworld We moved from there to Oliveira do Hospital a couple of years ago... for me, Nazare was not good for living: ghost town in winter, overcrowded in summer...that's why we hung out in Alcobaca!

@@millionplacesoneworldDear friend Alcobaça is great for quality of life and you have São Martinho do Porto beach but in summer is very crowded...if you want the same feeling of slow living and culture/ history of Alcobaça and a very long remote beach consider Pombal municipality and praia do osso da baleia (whale bone beach)...you have plenty of nature there close to mata do urso! You have to go there 🤗

I've already sent in a drone application for Pombal, let's see if the ANN approves. 👌 But there are so many more great places on the list, I need to stop looking for new places and just go where my viewers tell me to. 😄 Thank you 🫡

    Olá Andrejs,
I’m glad you liked Alcobaça… I agree. It’s similar vibe to Torres Vedras. And the good things is it’s less than 15 minutes to Nazaré. You have to be proud of yourself for staying away from those pastries! I know I couldn’t!!
    Cheers & Ciao ~

      Hi Jen,
I'm fighting my cravings for all pastries, I don't know for how long though 😄
About Alcobaça - it's starting to become very hard to choose my favorite place, because more and more cities/towns pop up all the time, and they all are great 😁 A tough decision 💯
      Take care!

@@millionplacesoneworld I can understand about finding 'favourite' places. If I can land back in Atouguia that will work for me because it's familiar... but there are several places I'd consider because just like you said... I've seen several places that I really liked.

Hey 🫡 How have you been? All good?
I'm currently saving up funds for my trip to Northern Portugal. Since it will require a longer time to film and stay there, I'm committed to making it happen. However, I'm a bit worried that I might love it so much that I won't want to come back!
Regarding the car, the one in the video is my friend's van. I still have my Mercedes🚗
I plan to apply for citizenship in 2-3 years, as it requires living in Portugal for 5 years. I've finally started taking a language course, so I hope to improve my Portuguese speaking skills soon.
Thank you for your well wishes🙂 Sometimes it can be challenging to stay on track, but I'm determined not to give up!
      See you soon!

The "thingy" on the "c" is called "cedilha" and it's there only to indicate that the "c" has the "ss" sound instead of the normal "c" sound. It doesn't change the way the "a" before or after are pronounced. 🙂

BTW....and also @theportugeeza....do you prefer Nazare or Sao Martinho? Will be staying in both in late October and just wondering if I should split the time evenly as I have planned now.....4 days in each....I like to at least settle in and get the feel of a place for a few days.

Alcool (beer) gives you kilos because they contain sugar, buy instead water in the CONTINENTE, PINGO DOCE, LIDL, MINI PREÇO or INTERMARCHE shops :
