Richard was almost always laid back, quite quiet and thoughtful when doing interviews. Seeing him on a talk show makes you appreciate just how much he put into his standup. He was an absolute genius and Steve Martin is no slouch either. These old shows, which happened when I was about 20, are great glimpses into that time which was a really cool time to grow up.

Oh man poor Steve. I thought this interview was pretty damn awkward. Steve is just not cut out to be interviewing someone. Luckily Pyror was laid back and helped him out. Numerous times Steve just threw out fluff when he had nothing to say and you can sense that look of 'Oh god.. what am doing' on his face.
Rest in peace Richard Pryor... This is amazing!!! And a complete brilliant work by two comedy masterminds. I'm betting Andy Kaufman was fully mesmerized if he saw ever saw this! :D
This interview is a lot more entertaining when you realize Steves just trying to take control of Pryor, Steve isnt as fummy as Pryor but he still holds almost a debate for laughter
its weird how ahead of its time this was/is apparently, with people thinking they had bad comedic chemistry. This was almost a short masterclass on meta-humor. And to people who think they didnt like one another Pryor's on words about Martin were "Steve is an artist." (and 'dont talk shit about think' lol something to that effect its in the mormon interview)
This is just incredibly funny. Pryor is so honest and funny and Steve Martin was just starting to explode and become the number one funny man in the nation.

All of these comments bashing Steve or saying the interview is awkward… you’re completely missing the point, lol. That’s the whole joke-Steve’s entire shtick is that meta, 4th wall irony. The “interview” is just one big bit in the same style. I don’t know how that isn’t obvious. It’s amazing, very Kauffman-esque.
When guest go on a talk show they are usually expected to say something that would entertain the audience and do it with some degree of enthusiasm. Seems like Richard Pryor didn't feel like "entertaining" and just was content to schmooze with Steve. Richard's understated tone may have thrown Steve off just a little but Steve seemed to have played off of it and rolled with it. Richard might've recognized it in Steve and intentionally perpetuated the understated approach (maybe, maybe not). I could just sense the rivalry so much between them that it made me feel uncomfortable. Even their body language gave it away.

put yourself in this time.. The Carson show was still huge at the time and Johnny Carson was royalty. It wasn't like today and all the failed late night hosts. To host the Carson show was a big, big deal and huge shoes to fill for this era.
They were both super talented, but this struggle just proves, without a doubt, what a genius Johnny Carson was. Steve had a great comic ability himself, but couldn't pull it out of Richard. Richard was not at his best, and Johnny wasn't there to bring it out, which he could do with ANYBODY.

The really awkward part came before this started, when they were discussing "The Wiz." That's the part I still remembered from when I was 16!!! I didn't even remember Glenn Campbell was on that night. Also, we get clues to Steve Martin's leaving stand up behind when he speaks of doing the same show and sold out auditoriums. After the release of "The Jerk" he never did another stand up tour.

Seen him not getting along with Chevy Chase, and even Eddie Murphy has said that he wasn’t supportive behind his back.
