My daughter trusted her gut when she fell in love with a terrible looking black cat at the shelter. He was so skinny, greasy and dirty, and must have been so matted when he was found that most of his body had been shaved. Nearly a year later, he is big and fluffy, absolutely shiny and stunningly gorgeous, and the nicest, most affectionate cat any of us has ever known. It took a long time to get him healthy (*his* gut was loaded with parasites) but nothing has ever been so worthwhile. I’m so glad she couldn’t stop thinking about him and adopted him.

This happened to me before. I went to a shelter and wanted this kitten named daisy but this full grown cat sheeba really wanted to go home with me so I trusted my gut and brought her home. She was a good cat but one day she just... Passed away. I was playing with her she ran into the backyard chasing a leaf and 2 hours later my brother found her passed away laying next to our garage... No clue what was wrong with her but I hope she enjoyed her last days. She was a good kitty she had neurological problems and would lightly walk into walls. She was a goofy goober. Rip sheeb forever loved.

One of the wierdest instances of gut instincs for me was when I was in high school, we had purchased some fireworks and were of course outside lighting them. Now I had two fireworks set up,the type that shoot flares up into the sky like roman candles. they were a bit above me on a raised platform as I laid on the ground trying to light them both. I knew I would be mostly safe from the shots as I was below the muzzles and they were both secure. But as I'm trying to light them one just won't light, I'm sitting there trying desperately to get it to work when suddenly without thinking I twist myself around so I'm on my back and start kicking away from the fireworks quickly. And good thing I did, a moment later the first firework exploded, it had been packed upside down or something so instead of launching up, just went boom. though... at least it lit the other firework? But yeah I was lucky to move when I did else my face would have been point blank.

As someone who works with horses (it's very dangerous at times), my gut has saved my life multiple times. Just last week, I was turning out a horse that is known for being dangerous and kicking. As I was leading him I thought to myself "he seems pretty calm today". When I went to let the horse go he still seemed calm, but my gut told me to duck, and sure enough, the moment the halter was off the horse he turned and bucked, his hind hoof striking where my head had been just a second before.

If a firefighter told me to leave, I'd do it whether they turned out to be right or wrong or if I could swear they were wrong. It doesn't hurt to follow their instructions, and it could easily save lives. And if a boss gigged me for doing so, I can always blame the firefighter. And if that didn't get me off the hook, ANYTHING is better than losing one's life in a fire!

For example, riding an unknown twisty road; the whole road looks clean for the most part, but you just get a feeling that there's gravel on the next bend, so you slow down. Oh look at that, gravel, and an oncoming car that you just avoided low-siding into.

There's an even more interesting aspect of this, though it would be hard to conduct meaningful experiments. Clausewitz maintained that the best military commanders are intuitive rather than analytical because they always have to deal with situations where, because of the "fog of battle," they never have all the information they need (and some of the information they have is wrong) but they still have to make an instant decision. Some people are somehow able to make these good decisions most of the time.

My parents refused to believe my gut reactions to some people from my church, a couple of whom were my age. They thought I was being mean because they weren't 'popular', but really neither was I. I stubbornly kept up my refusal to interact with them and a couple years later some really bad stuff went down with one of them and some of the younger kids and he went to prison. The other family, around the same time, was revealed to be manipulating a bunch of people and some families broke up permanently because of them. I told my parents I didn't ever want them trying to shame me for following my gut again! This while I was still in highschool. I think kids should be trained to listen to their instincts more instead of molding to social norms.

I feel like it's mass appeal was both a strength and a weakness - and I don't have the background knowledge for it to be truly transformative. The creepiest gut feeling I had was probably about one and a half year ago when I first met my best friend’s new boyfriend. I didn’t know anything about the man. NOTHING. I just knew the two met at a deep sea photography event and they had a fling which they decided to take seriously. We met after watching a concert and I went home feeling absolutely sick and angry. There was this awful voice that kept yelling that “don’t lie to yourself, you wanna murder this man”. I even drew violent things to keep me sane. The voice was that horrible. I’ve never reacted so horribly to someone I’ve never met or known before. More than often times I can judge whether someone is awful or not upon first impression, but it’s never violent.
A year later, this man is horribly abusing my best friend. At the time I found out, I was living far away from her and I felt so weak and guilty.
Still tho, it’s creepy af. Currently my other best friend and I are creating a support system for her (luckily she’s busy for work too). I hope things can be resolved soon.

    • @keenachabot7495
      @keenachabot7495 5 років тому +3

Hi! :) I am definitely not an expert in the matter but what I understand from the enteric brain is that it's not a brain like the one is our head. Yes there is an incredible amount of neurons sending information to and from the gut, but it is still directed by and analyzed in the brain. Our guts don't decide anything on their own, otherwise they might make decisions that would be beneficial for enteric cells, but not for the entire organism. That's why we have the brain: it takes everything in and decides accordingly. The reason we say we have a "gut brain" is that we were not expecting it and it's a bit of a surprise to see how much of an influence it has. All the information carried to the brain does have an effect: it would be foolish to say otherwise. However, "gut" neurons are no different than the neurons that travel from the muscles in our feet, or the neurons used for sight. When my eye sees a lego on the floor, it carries that information to my brain, who concludes that I will not only step on it, but it'll be painful. My brain then instructs the muscles in my legs to avoid the threat. The same can be said for the gut. There's an unbelievable amount of bacteria in there, and it's where we get most of our nutrients from. There's a chance the very first nervous systems were developed entirely for monitoring the guts. Plus, its sheer length means we need a lot more neurons to cover it!
I think the confusion comes from the fact that we are only starting to understand just how complex this part of our nervous system is, but the research doesn't point towards a complex decision-making brain. Maybe using the word "brain" was wrong to begin with.... But what is clear though is that more research is needed to fully understand the guts role, but it is highly unlikely that a complex brain will ever be discovered in our guts.

I was on an airplane getting ready to fly home after a vacation in Florida. As I was sitting there preparing to take off, I kept getting this horrible feeling, and I even had a vision of people getting sucked out of the plane. I kept looking at all the faces around me and thinking “all of these people are going to die”. I looked at my mom who was sitting next to me and thought “this is the last moment I have with her”. The plane started to speed down the runway, and I gripped the arm of the seat tighter with every second, until suddenly, the plane came to a screeching stop. Then the captain made the announcement “We just received a notification that one of our doors may not be closed all the way”. I was never so happy to have my flight delayed. Later on I told my mom I had a bad feeling and she said she felt the same. She didn’t have a vision like I did, but she had a bad feeling in her gut. I have more stories like this, but this one is the one that I always think of first.

This is supported by MBTI's cognitive functions, so you're definitely not alone in this!
The decision-making functions are thinking and feeling. And you need both working together to grow and make better choices. Dismissing your own feelings can mean being in denial (of how "above it" you are, how much you actually care, etc.). Dismissing others' feelings can mean you're on your own with your plans, and flies in the face of us being social creatures (we didn't survive this long by being lone wolves; we need others' insight/skills/expertise more often than not, since we alone do not have all the answers).

Well, our oven died, and I’m a super logical person. After doing a lot of research, and asking my husband for input, and taking into account our budget, there were a few that looked great- but a less “reliable “ brand. So... I went with my gut and just got a well known brand, that still had what I wanted (and the extended warranty). I’ve been worried about going with my gut as our kitchen aid Oven was HORRIBLE. Maybe you’ll give me some peace tonight. ❤️❤️❤️

In spiritual writings, intuition and gut feeling are two different things. Gut feeling can be wrong, but is great for survival, though it can be trained.
Intuition in this context is infallible, and can't be trained. It's a deep, mystical experience that goes beyond reason. Plato believed that intuition was how we understand basic axioms and self-evident truths, the foundation of logic.

I can never find scissors when I need them in my house. Or I forget where I put them after finding them, but when I heard my kitten screeching after getting tangled up in a chair with a lot of strings... It still took a second cause I was in shock, but instantly after realizing what was happening, I ran to a pair of scissors that I could never find before. I think this boost in crazy memory may come from adrenaline enabling my flight or fight response, but can adrenaline improve your memory to?

I would like to hear you talk about practice theory, or practice-based approach. You could see authors like Schatzki, Reckwitz, Gherardi, Strati for reference. About what practice theory offers, about sensorial understanding and embodiment, and how knowledge is understood - not as something in someone's head, but situated knowing how, doing a practice. Body not as a instrument, what mind uses, but part of mental and bodily routines. I think gut feeling involves sensorial and aesthetic understanding, in the case of firefighters, understanding what it should feel like but sensing otherwise. This made him reflexive action etc.

In fact my gut instinct warned me of a person who entered into my family's life that I hadn't met before, but who later turned out to be a Professional Con Artist, playing up her disability so she could mooch off people. I hope this comment reaches you.
(impulsive decisions)/(trusting guts) are immune to fact/logic.
Without going into details for why this is fact (unless you asked). but you will never learn if you use your guts because you did not asses the situation's factors (no training (gaining experience) at all).
The issue -that you mentioned in the video- was in life-threatening/dangerous situations where time is extremly valuable resource that you must not waste; assessing a situation takes time -that you do not owe in case of fire or running from a lion- so your brain -in these situations only- takes control/lead without you (noticing)/(having any control) until the danger is gone.
in another words, don't worry about when to trust your guts because the brain is well trained when to take lead and only act -based only upon intuition thinking rather than conscious reasoning-. (there is some debate -regarding some danger cases/situations- where you must think even if you do not have time).
The bottom line is, never trust your guts (system 1).

Interesting. As I get older and have more experience, I find I can make more decisions using intuition, which I then roughly "sanity check". So I am combining System 1 and System 2 decision making totally naturally. This is the real reason older people are paid more: we're worth it! But I was young once, and viewed the intuition of my elders as a form of magic or luck or extreme intelligence. (It isn't. But always do the sanity check!) So be encouraged young'uns, and put in the work. It's the only way.

I have a really weak and sometimes misleading "gut instinct". Whenever I have tough decisions to make and I decide to listen to a "gut instinct", it turns out to be some cognitive bias that totally screws me down the track and I end up wishing I'd done what my logical and rational mind was telling me to do.
