I love your videos Rachel. They are so precise and give lots of tips. Also, they are no nonsense and uncomplicated but the standard of work is fab and the projects are really great. Some people post videos that make things look so complicated but yours are really encouraging and maker friendly.Thank you 💐
I loved this video! I have done a lot of EPP in my life but never without templates. Good to learn something new, thank you for the very clear instructions. 🌷🌷🌷
I just started this method and like it better than with papers. I have 4 flowers made and am wondering if you can show us how to assemble a quilt top with them.Would it be easier to do in rows? I have not done this before.Love your channel! Thanks.
Hexagons is how I started quilting back in my schooldays but used cardboard for them all. I enjoyed the hand stitching as very soothing. I remember my first big project surviving but the material rotted away...leaving a collection of stitches.
I am doing this! Brings back memories of sitting with my Mom Mom (Grandmother) who hand-pieced and hand-quilted. Cut everything out with scissors - magical! I miss her so much and this will bring her close to my heart as I stitch. Thank you ❤ EDIT: I just used your links to purchase the 1/4 inch guide and window-style Clover hexagon pack. I especially love that I can use scraps to do this. Giddy LOL😅
Another great tutorial! If you can not get the acrylic templates, I usually cut a hexagon template out of a thick material like cardboard. Then I mark where the seam is and cut around it to create an open template for my pieces.
I’m working on a postage stamp hand sewn quilt. I’m on block 5 of 12 (1,728 pieces) (I’d never hand sewn anything before) I watched many yt videos but none were this detailed. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you Rachel. Been waiting for this! Definitely giving this a go and ordered the hex templates from your amazon link. The EPP just looks to faff for me. This tutorial really inspires me 😊
Just started a hex quilt using paper. This looks such a good method. I have been struggling with paper/pins as I have arthritis in my hands. Thank you for giving me hope if completing my project. I love your videos!!
I found a ‘hollow’ hexagon template amongst my late Mums sewing things and had no idea how to use it! Thanks for demonstrating this - another (and perhaps easier) way to work with larger hexies
Thanks for another lovely podcast Rachel. I love a bit of hand piecing. One thing I do after drawing the stitching lines on the fabric is to twizzle the pencil at each corner to leave a very small dot. This makes it easier to see each corner when stitching. I also find a light grey or beige thread or greige as we sometimes call it disappears into most colours . That quilt is going to grow quite quickly & inspired me to finish my Farmer's Wife Quilt. X
Thank you for demonstrating this. I just started my first EPP with 1 1/2 inch hexagons. I will give this a try as well. Maybe I can make a tiny quilt for my wall. I love hand sewing. I do a lot of cross stitch so this feels pretty natural to me.
I have been doing a lot of handpiecing and EPP lately. I find it depends on the size and shape of the piece determines which method is easier. The 2 inch diamond stars are hand sewing nicely together, but the 1/2 inch squares are really difficult with so much fabric at each intersection. I am doing 1/4 inch hexagons using papers and although the preparation is a bit tedious the sewing together is easy. It's great to be able to choose the method that suits the project best. Thanks for another great video. Keep them coming.
@rrichards1210 I agree, smaller pieces are easier to manage with EPP and ill still be using the technique for small projects but larger quilts I'll be hand piecing.. picking snd choosing like you say ❤️
Hi love watching you sew and grow and sharing your journey with us. I too love to hand sew and epp. With the knot at the end I agree that it is a good idea. I use a knot that I first learned watching Sue Daley videos. She does epp and does what she calls a knicker knot. If you look up Sue Daley knicker knot it will show you. It’s a figure 8 knot and is very secure. I also use it for hand sewing as well at the beginning and end of each piece. (Trust me I have had to unpick on occasion and it’s very hard to get it out, I’ve had to cut it) ❤Happy sewing
Hi Rachel 👋 thank you so much for showing us how the EPP without papers. I wanted to try this technique, and I was finally able to find the correct templates, I was wondering what to do with the flowers after they are put together, did you sew them all together? Or, do you sew them individually in a background, and if this is the case, how you deal with the edges of the flower? Are you planning to make a video about that? Thank you
Thank you so much for all the effort you put into these videos. You explain it so thoroughly that it's easy to follow even as a complete beginner. And I really appreciate you being so attentive to making sure what you are showing is kept in focus and clear, as well as mentioning ways we can avoid pain in hands and wrists. I recently started my first FPP project with inspiration from you, and I really enjoy it so far 🙌. I look forward to learning even more from you, best regards from Denmark 🧵😊
I used to hate hand sewing but then I got into EPP and now I am hooked (I even ordered a little embroidery kit to try) 😊 Although I did suddenly get hand strain and I wasn't sure at first why, then I realised I had switched my needle to one with an ever so slightly bigger eye, and it was causing a very slight, barely noticeable resistance when pulling the eye and thread through, and I was having to tug a little harder to get the end through. It was so slight it wasn't even noticeable until my hand started hurting, I switched back to my old style needle and no more hand strain. (It was a tulip milliners no 10 big eye causing the issue, and I went back to my Bohin applique long no 9)
Great tutorial! I handpiece as well and love how relaxing it is. I ordered a starter Epp pack after Christmas. I loved most of it except taking off the papers and being left with a gluey unironed mess. I also thought that the cost of the papers that i was looking into was too much. I tried handpiecing and i am hooked. I haven't put them together yet but am amassing enough flowers to make two double quilts and one wallhanging. I think I have less than one hundred flowers to make! Now the question is do i machine quilt or handquilt?
Oh wow this is going to be absolutely stunning. Just love liberty and your quilts have inspired me to start my own. This one is next on my list. Well done
Ghosh a. It different way of doing things, but I feel a lot more intricate for myself. But I guess when you are used to it, it would be much quicker. Worth a try at least for me. Thanks for sharing
My grandmother always did hers that way, even the 1 inch ones, when she made the grandmother’s flower garden, she never used papers….. that’s how I learned to do it….
Wonderful tutorial! I love traditional hand piecing. I find it especially nice for squares and rectangles. It goes much faster than EPP for me. I also like doing tiny knots at the start and end and a back stitch every time I pull my needle through. I do make my stitches a little bigger than yours but they’ve held together fine for me. Have you ever seen Jen Kingwell patterns? She has wonderful patterns written for hand piecing as well as templates you can buy. Though I do prefer windowed ones like you mentioned. 😊
Thank you for mentioning hand strain. After many years of only machine piecing, I started a project of hand embroidering (embellishing) dots that were appliquéd onto fabric - so through 2 layers. After 3 weeks, carpal tunnel pain is all the way up my arm and I will have to abandon the project. Take care and treat hands & wrists gently.
I struggle knowing how to join one flower to another. I try to remember a petal point from a flower connects with a valley seam from another flower but it gets tricky sewing a row to another row! Would love to see how you do that. Would have been easier to connect with papers but I loved making the individual flowers without papers!! So freeing and no hassle!!
No you don't need to use papers at all, if you search for joining hexagon flowers on youtube, you'll see the layouts that you need. The same principle is applied
Thank you! I use best press if there are stubborn creases in the fabric, usually where it has been folded on the bolt of fat quarter but I don't starch on any other occasion 💖
So happy to follow you since I've started to learn epp. What do you do with the tails when making stars please.? After piecing the points together and after assembly. Thanks in advance. If I missed a video already addressing this issue, please point out where I can find it. I'm 80 and loving this new venture.
@CharleneMunson Hi Charlene, I'm glad you are enjoying my videos. With the tails on a star, it's best swirl them around in the same direction and press them. Best not to cut them ❤️
Thank you for the tutorial. Gorgeous fabrics! Did you make your cute pincushion ring??? I love it. I have a pincushion metal ring that's not very comfortable and would love to know more about yours.. thank you 😉
Thank you, I did yeah.. its really comfortale to wear and i havent poked my finger with the pins. I posted a tutorial over on my instagram last week so you can check it out there xx
Thank you for your great videos ! I find them very informative and helpful and I thoroughly enjoy them 😊

Im going to give this method a go! Next id love to see how you finish your quilt. How you applique your flowers to the background fabric, etc.
You're tutorials are always very clear, thank you
Thank you so much Rachel for taking the time to make this video for us. It’s much appreciated. ❤

That's a good tip Tracy, sometimes it can be difficult to see the corner so I'll be trying that ❤️

I did yeah, I followed another tutorial on youtube. If you search for finger pincushion tutorial you will find a few 💕

What size are these hexagons before sewing? Also how many do you think you’d need to make a large throw?
You can use the following website to calculate how many hexagons you will need for any quilt size 💕

Hi Sandra, I posted a tutorial very recently on my Instagram ❤️ it's under stitch.with.rachel
The rocking stitch movement is the same as a hand quilting rocking stitch.
It is yeah 💕
