You both made so many interesting points. During 2020 (and for our family - post hurricanes) we have been reminded what living 'off the grid' means. Although being self-sufficient helps - we would never have been able to get through those times without helping our neighbors and being able to openly receive help from our neighbors. I believe there is a lesson in that. It speaks to synergy.
Underrated comment.
As a recently retired US Air Force Combat Search And Rescue Aviator ... (I was THE very last MC-130P Flight Engineer - West Coast Rescue - Callsign "FARVA"), I responded to every hurricane with a DSCA tasking integration (every major storm) since I started flying the line solo in 2009 (Jumped ship from a very diverse decade in the Army, crossing into the Blue back in 2006) ... I saw a lot of different framed paradigms for how "Civil Society" functions, or fails to function/maintain resilience, in the midst of adverse circumstances that nobody was able to isolate themselves from. From dogshit combat to storm surges and sandblaster-esque front bands of a no-shit mega-storm, and it's ensuing flooding and wind blast damage that renders our "taken for granted" public utilities and transportation arteries / modalities / lines of communication.
I learned a lot about Humans and how they interoperate in both ideal situations, as well as in dire moments where nothing is assured, and every sustained life advantage a Citizen would normally take for granted as "running smoothly in the background, becomes anything BUT assured.
Your comment about "there is a lesson in that" does indeed peak to synergy.

Patrick's insurance organization is called People Helping People, and that ethos is EXACTLY what I witnessed 300-500 feet AGL, skimming underneath my tin can helicopter tanker as I flew overhead, spotting isolated individuals and families in peril for the Jolly Green Helicopter crews working the hoist and coordinating the overall dance required to make a totally synergistic result appear as needed/ where needed / precisely when needed, and logging Save after Save after Save.
The differencwe between properly developed and managed resilient relationships between the fellow Citizens who had already decided that they were going to look out for one another ...
... and a self absorbed gaggle of overwhelmed INDIVIDAULS (not the aforementioned Team Effort types) who couldn't manage to get out there and make fast friends with the neighbors that they SHOULD have planned a neighborhood support and contingency relationship BEFORE that first raindrop hits the ground
I could write 20k words on this, but I'll spare y'all here. Basic point hopefully made.
Be your Brother's Keeper and forge those neighborly relationships/roles/responsibilities that are often the difference between what areas make it through the challenges, and those who are waiting around for a Leader to emerge (but yet, never learning proper Follower-ship so as to be able to be LED by the Leader-ship that they sit around waiting to see emerge.
Ask any one of my Pararescue Brothers, Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers, or their sister Service / Civil Emergeny Services Agency) colleagues how much of a difference this shit makes (or even go ask the guy on the ground running a Cajun Navy boat beside the shallow concrete shoreline of "Lake Wal-Mart" adjacent to the Costco and Kroger Forebays).
Resilience is People that help PEOPLE.
If you fail to plan, "They Say" that you indeed plan to fail.
Neighborhood level cohesion and asset / skillset integration is an almost unstoppable force.
We've seen it both ways, and the numbers in the after-action statistics tell that tale as if it were the causal factor between success and frustrating wasted effort(s) to bring about:

I can tell you that with multiple tours overseas, as I sit reflective today at age 47, retired since 2020, I think the moments in my life that made me the PROUDEST to be wearing a uniform that has a U and an S on the nametape, was when I was watching We The People embody before my very eyes the concept of "Do unto others as ye would have others do unto you"

I just need to be present to witness AMERICAN CITIZENS doing that uniquely American thing ... Standing beside their fellow Citizen, and never leaving his Brother/Sister behind.

Early September 2005 Marines searched my neighborhood for survivors/ bodies after Katrina, I've heard a few SEAL'S it was worse than any battlefield they had seen. He may have been in my area.
What area were you in? We were on Franklin in Gentilly.
I was just landing in Kuwait on the rotator bird, coming back to deployed duty from mid-tour (yearlong tour) R&R leave in San Diego (to visit my 8 year old that was 7 when I stepped to the sandbox, later returning home to a 9 year old.)
We watched the setup coverage of the storm and the projected path(s) as I was waitying to board the Freedom Bird back to the last place I wanted to be Serving while my Fellow Americans were needing us more than EVER back home, and we were stuck with Billions of effective rescue and medical equipment belonging to the National Guard, baking away over in Planet Bullshit.
The "National Guard" Troops and Equipment there wasn't exactly "Guarding the Nation", and as I was already nearly 30 years old and a father and American Small Business owner and all that Jazz in my non-military capacity, I grew jaded as Hell realizing where the priorities of my Government truly existed.
Fast forward to the end of 2006 and I'd left the Army to join the storied and highly decorated West Coast (Silicon Valley Guard) Pararescue outfit, changing Services and retraining to fly US Air Force Rescue for the California Air National Guard (I ended up being a full timer there from the day I graduated flight school until the day I retired in 2020)
My unit was very much present overhead and in the trenches of the flooded Parishes post Katrina, and we logged an enormous number of legit Saves. The unit veteran Rescuemen that were doing God's Work in The Big Easy became MY instructors as I began learning the tradecraft of Search And Rescue, and most of the key knowledge they passed along to me, they learned during Katrina.
I got the same stories in graphic detail.
For what it's worth, they helped me and those like me to do our level BEST work in all the storms, fires and earthquake response missions that were to follow in the 13 years I flew for that unit.
But I stopped being a Republican or a Democrat over the shit I saw in 2005 both overseas and SPECIFICALLY while watching the devastation that YOU endured, and then boarding a helicopter to fly over somebody else's waterless beach of a country, on a highly capable platform of a vehicle, and beside an expertly trained crew, that were asked by the Civilian Suits to go do the magic shit that they do, over in someone else's back parking lot.
Not back home helping you, or our sister unit in the Gulfport/Biloxi area who was spinning up to relieve us in place overseas, when that same storm ripped apart THEIR homes as well.
We got extended. They had a valid excuse for not making it overseas in time. It helps to NOT be newly homeless as you step off to deploy for a year.
I'm so very sorry y'all had to live through that. I've seen the aftermath of every major storm ever since, up close. And it's a fact. There are indeed worse conditions and gnarly outcomes in some of these storm crippled areas, than there are in many shitshow firefight zones over in YouPick-a-Stan.
