Margaret, thank you for your work and the best interviews. This is no exception. I would disagree with Elliot on the lack of contingency planning on Iraq. The contingency warplanning, begun during the Clinton administration, actually involved what was later called the “Surge” taking place on the front end following Hussein’s defeat and removal. Political decision makers decided against that contingency planning estimate and requirement, apparently believing that liberation/transition from a tyranny would follow the East European model. It obviously didn’t go down that way. But very good insights otherwise here.
In this instance it doesn't solely fall on him trust me I'm not Turmp fan but on Afghanistan this has been debacle crossing 20 years worth of failed leadership. Even us as the American people have a good deal of culpability of not caring and not holding our leadership accountable over what the expectations were when it came to this war. I speak as both a veteran and a citizen. That failure of several different leaders led us to this point.
