Very good videos! Me and my wife are planning to move to Canada. It would be really helpful if you could make a video like that about Moncton and Fredericton in New Brunswick!
Yeah, I agree he should have mentioned it. But at the same time, even houses being sold 30k above asking are still way lower than in other larger cities.
I moved to Halifax from Africa earlier this year and Haligonians are some of the most decent nicest folks you will find anywhere in the world. Halifax also offers the best balance of life and nature of any city I know of.
We are so happy that you choose to make Halifax home ♥️ our community would not be the same without lovely immigrant populations livening our culture and creating jobs and raising families. It really makes our city on of the best in Canada if not the world.

People working to make ends meet realistically aren't in a position to consider moving to a new city. Halifax's cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada is very reasonable. Lots of positives in the video, and all true. But anyone thinking of moving to the HRM should be aware: NS has low wages and high taxes compared to the rest of Canada. Even with the high taxes the city's infrastructure, development, public education and health care system are far more inferior and behind other Canadian cities. Tuition is also the highest is Canada. The cost of food, energy, consumer goods and entertainment are the same cost or more expensive than other parts of Canada. Un-employment is usually high, and opportunities are limited to certain industries. Know the pros and cons before you decide if HRM is right for you. Good luck!
@@susanadams3874 , 6 years ago, I lived in an apartment that was in Clayton park, so maybe a 10 min drive from downtown? Definitely not in the heart of downtown. A 1 bedroom at an old apartment building cost me 1200.
true Nova Scotia is a poor province, and things are done differently compared to the rest of Canada, look at covid, the maritimes is the only place to close its boarders, because they dont have the infrastructure to look after the sick.
Sometimes I miss NS. I grew up there and used to live in Halifax at one time. Unfortunately, there's no money to be made due to the lowest wages in Canada unless you have a govt job. Whatever you do earn, be prepared to give half it to the govt in various forms of taxation. Even selling/buying a cheap second hand vehicle will fork over 15%. That said, what he says about culture is spot on. It is possible to overlook the low wages and high taxes and move to small towns and make a decent living and be happy if all you want to do is exist. The population doesn't grow because the economic conditions set by the govt forces young people to leave, and this has been the trend since the 1960's. Also, the healthcare system is also a bottom feeder. Taxes are the highest Services are the lowest Wages are the lowest And, I didn't even mention fuel prices.... And, I also forgot the nation's highest air fares for travel. On a positive, it would be a fantastic place for an off-grid lifestyle.
Nice but very expensive to live now. No doctors, hospitals full capacity, traffic on the small streets is really slow. The taxes are the highest in Canada , the inflation rate and low wages are the reason young people move away. Lots of great restaurants and nice beaches. Always treacherous black ice during winter . Worst transit system ever. Waiting for an ambulance usually 45 min. If your lucky. Lots of violence , murders , etc…. Nice summers and great fall . Super high rents and lots of homeless with no city plans at all that make sense. Almost zero parking and meters that are hard to use for most people. The people are nice .it has Bedford near by, one of the top ten spots to live in the world. It’s a water front community with tons of bistros and restaurants and walking trails all around. Great salt water swimming everywhere .
I have always loved Halifax and if I had not moved west in my youth I think that it would have been my choice as a Maritimer to live. Being one of the oldest cities in the Maritimes and a port city gives it a charm that is very enticing. It also has a great nightlife scene partially due to the high number of Universities found within its borders. As mentioned compared to other cities in the Maritimes the weather is pretty temperate. At Christmas time, they have a 50/50 chance of having snow. Of course like all things that could be achangin. That being said, Over the years I have visited Halifax many times and have never found that the cost of living here was all that cheap. Even compared with cities two or three times the size in Canada. Jobs were tough to find and the pay rate was very low. Plus because of the high student population, rental accommodation has always been tough to find and expensive. I had a friend who had to move to another university in another province after not getting in the residence at Dalhousie because the cost was so high outside of the university. That same person returned as a professional bought a house and rented the top floor of the house out to university students. He easily covered the cost of his mortgage and then some. What was interesting he never had to advertise a vacancy. All he had to do was place a sign in his front window and it would be filled within days. His central location was also beneficial.
It's true many doctors have retired recently and there is a doctor shortage here but emergency care is excellent. Between my mom's cancer, step dad's heart issues and my own issues, the system has been amazing and quick! Both Halifax and Kentville have great hospitals and doctors. (Those are the only ones I've dealt with so I won't comment on other areas of the province.) Of course, there are longer waits for some non-emergency specialists because of the shortage but the entire system is not "beyond bad."
S. A. Parker I’m very happy for you and family are receiving good care in Nova Scotia. But that is not most peoples experience outside of the Halifax area ( and only those that have doctors have good healthcare in the metro area)not only are there a shortage of doctors and many retiring there’s few being replaced. The government continues to cut the health care services. Do not want to get into politics but unfortunately doctors are not drawn to Nova Scotia as they don’t get paid enough for what is expected. I would love to return to my home province but without healthcare that’s an impossibility . Might be worth noting that this comes from a very reliable source i.e. retired doctor there’s approximately 200 doctors retiring in the next five years and very little hope of replacements !!
I had to leave Halifax for the same reason. The emergency at QE2 misdiagnosed, and I suffered there for 2 years with no treatment. Moved to Ontario and received necessary treatments.
Nashid Haque Very sad this problem is not being addressed!! The government keeps cutting resources! Happy you finally received the care treatment needed .
I have been living here in Halifax for the last seven years and never moved to other parts. Loved it and your Channel. Just subscribe it. All the Best.
@ashraf taqatqah Winter can be very bad. You need a pair of very good winter boots. It can be very icy so you need to be careful when walking or driving. But it can also be very beautiful. Many people go ice skating, sledding, or play ice hockey. There is a place in the commons where you can go ice skating for free if you have your own skates, and you can rent skates if you don't have any.
@ashraf taqatqah Being cold is a relative sensation and you don't have to suffer it. If you are coming from a warmer culture then your body has adapted to stay cool so you will feel colder than those that have lived in cold temperatures their whole life. If you want to develop cold temperature tolerance in your body take a few minutes of you daily shower and lower the temperature to full cold. Your body will strengthen its natural ability to heat itself and you will not find it so cold. You can actually go swimming in the winter if you want to.

Need a car to get around to explore outside Halifax, bus system is slow. Rent is overpriced in Halifax and less then 1% vacancy rate. Houses are expensive and even go over asking depending on area We have one of the lowest minimum wage in the country
I’m from Halifax and when I travelled around Australia, I worked at a restaurant in Perth. An American aircraft carrier came into port and a few officers came into the restaurant. When they asked where I was from, I told them Halifax and was met with “no way, we love Halifax!” There were a few who knew all about the city and loved it! Talk about random conversations on the other side of the world 😀
I Live HRM. Had to pause and check the video date. I don't agree with your #3. The vacancy rate is 1% and that makes for next to NO choices of where to live coupled with the crazy cost of living. Also the cost of an apartment in relation to wages/taxes here is still expensive. Home purchases are expensive as much of the value is in location and houses are being scooped up OVER the asking price. Finally the rate of taller buildings being built in the city is high and the city is a perpetual construction zone.
In the past 20 yrs the rent quadrupled, foreigner population has quadrupled, job decline has quadrupled. I live in one of the "neighboring towns" and you couldn't pay me to go over to Halifax.
Odd that you say jobs have declined. I understand Halifax has experienced fairly rapid growth. That being the case there most be plenty of jobs. The rapid growth explains higher rents and increasing housing pricings - supply is not keeping up to demand.
@@EdinburghFive - You didn't understand my comment; "foreigner population has quadrupled, job decline has quadrupled." It's not Nova Scotians working those jobs.
@@OUigot How so? People bring money, they make investments in businesses that create jobs, generate taxes that pay for services and infrastructure in your Province, etc. By 'Foreigner population" I assume you mean those who do not look like you? So, if someone who looks like you comes from anywhere outside of Nova Scotia is it OK or are you against them as well?
I was born and raised in the Halifax area, to Canadians looking to move. Halifax has a lot to offer depending on how you want your lifestyle. First and foremost Halifax is the 11th largest metropolitan area in Canada. We'll likely have a population around 480,000 for 2021. We'll be the next city to break half a million for sure in Canada. And that is because in the last five years was only when Halifax started seeing significant growth. For the most part the city has handled it well, and there are some very exciting projects happening. Jobs definitely don't pay the same compared to the rest of Canada. And you pay more taxes with the less money you'll be making. And finding that nice job can definitely take some time. But there is never a shortage of labor and service jobs to get noticed. But the climate is very nice compared to other Canadian cities like Montreal or Toronto. We have the ocean, rolling hills and mountains. I don't want to be anywhere else.
@TomBradyShow 12 then go watch a moving to California video. Even though we all know Texas is the new California. Yeah I've traveled more than you realize.
I moved to Halifax 7 years ago from Montreal, and it was not really a good idea. Housing and food costs are surprisingly high, as are taxes, power rates and the costs of starting a business, while the economy really can't support these high costs of living. It's not surprising that every other ad on the radio (and buses, billboards, etc) is for some debt-relief agency or other.
Halifax seems like the most ocean cities in Sao Paulo State, in Brazil. Small cities, nice people, slow rhythm (in a good way) and a vibrant life at summer. For sure, Halifax seems like a city where I'd love to live, to escape from a chaotic city like Sao Paulo. Yes, the state and the city has the same name, like New York. BTW. Thanks for sharing!

Samma Vitae no he meant “no health care “!! Father spent 20 days in a emergency bed waiting for a dye test !! Unacceptable considering the high taxes !!
NO WAY! I moved to Halifax 3 years ago from Toronto and it is freezing all year rainy and dark. Such a big difference in weather, its a damp cold which feels so much colder and with no sun shine even more cold. Rain, I lived on Vancouver island for 10 years and thought I knew rain, nope, Halifax rains all year, no need to ever water the grass as it will never turn brown. Also Halifax home heating is a major issue as it can be cold almost 12 months of the year making for a big yearly heating bill, summers will be so cold in the morning you will run heat and hot in the evening with humidity. Summers are late and short starting in mid July and ending in early September. There is a reason you see people is sweaters all the time here, with the high cost of heat stores are always cold and people keep their jackets on. People here are used to the weather and know nothing else so its normal for them, but if your not from the maritimes get ready for lots of rain, no sun and cold all the time, even in buildings.
I am from Ohio, USA. I visited Halifax in 2016 and loved the city. I am generalizing, but the people were incredibly nice. I have so many fond memories of my trip and can't wait to go back at some point.

I spent a wonderful 5 years living in Halifax, and watching your video reminds me how much I'd love to go back and visit. Won't be going back permanently though, the summer humidity in Nova Scotia is a lot for a prairie boy like me to handle lol
Having lived in Toronto and knowing people who lived in downtown Vancouver, i can say that $1400 is beyond cheap! It all depends what you are used to I guess.
That $1400 must be for downtown. In the area that I live in, that is all brand new apartments buildings $1400 gets you a two or three bedroom apartment.
Very information video. A lot of correct information except for no.7. Nova Scotia is not that accommodative to International student. As an International student it is hard to secure gainful employment after graduation and a large majority of International students migrate to greener pastures. Be it Toronto or Calgary. The Government noticed this and saw the need to establish the AIPP(Atlantic Immigration Pilot Programme) which is geared at helping students whom graduated Universities/colleges to stay and secure residency. I myself love Nova Scotia because as the presenter states the small town feel and the friendly people.
So to you, Halifax is only the peninsula? Seems odd no mention of Fairview, Clayton park, Spryfield they are not towns they are more communities part of Halifax. This video is a very misrepresentation of what Halifax is it is only focusing on Downtown. If you want to move to Halifax do your research if you want to learn out the Downtown area and the rest of the peninsula watch this video. The rest of the city has so much more to offer.
Maaan!!! I really want to move to Halifax. Your video was amazing. I've been in Vancouver, it's a beautifull place, but it's too expensive to live there as well. Halifax seems beautifull to, and a great place to raise my daugther. Cheers!!!
Omg this is such a cool video I'm from South Carolina and I love extreme cold weather and I was planning on moving to New York City very soon very very soon actually but at the last minute I changed my mind and I'm having thoughts about moving to Canada and Halifax has always been such a interest to me thanks so much for the video
Cool to hear your story. Halifax is as good as it gets. This video encapsulates the culture and what you can expect very well. People are friendly, food is fantastic and the scenery doesn't get much better for a city environment anyway. Halifax is the center of the Atlantic provinces in Canada and thus most major businesses centralize in Halifax so for a skilled worker the job opportunity in Halifax is very promising. I hope you chose to move here! We'll be happy to meet you 😁
Nice. A ton of information about Halifax. Please keep making similar video on other cities as well. The video was fun to watch and hats off for making sure that the viewer never got bored.. 👍👍
the only thing holding Halifax back is low wages and outrageous cost of living RELATIVE to wages. If you can land a mid-high paying job then yes it's the nicest city in Atlantic canada by a mile. Example Moncton/Fredericton/SaintJohn (NB) wages are 1% lower but the cost of living is almost 50% cheaper so your money goes WAY further.
$1400 for a 1 bdrm seems pricey to me. My nephew pays $1800 for a newish 1 bdrm high rise condo in downtown Toronto, walks to work. Yes, it's more money but it's one of the most expensive cities in Canada.
oh this was 2 years ago so I would like potential people to know housing rentals currently sit at 1% vacancy and in the south end a 1 bedroom apartment is $2,000 a month and Halifax rentals are the most expensive in Canada. Taxes are high and wages are low. Medical is very stretched to beyond its limit. The Hospital system is broken and many do not have a Doctor. The positives are it is beautiful. So think twice before coming here.
I lived in Halifax for almost 3 years; beautiful scenery and friendly people. But it was too quiet for us; not a lot going on, employment was very tough- its very nepotistic. A lot of Nova Scotians have never left the province, never mind the country, and its about who you know, not what you know. Taxes are high and options are less than you;d find in almost every other province. The economy struggles, so there’s higher unemployment. I loved the scenery there, and it’s probably a nice place to visit, but I couldn’t live there again.
You are exactly right, it's not "what" you know - it's "who" you know in order to get a job in Halifax, or if you're one of Trudeau's migrants. I was in a well known international retail outlet store just the other night and not one of the employees were Nova Scotian, let alone Canadian. Many Nova Scotians are unemployed, but foreigners are employed?
I don't really agree with this video , One thing You need to know, medical care is difficult to get , especially if You are Seriously I'll. If You go to a hospital for emergency care, You can be waiting 16 hr to see a doctor. Once You see a doc. You can know You are getting good care. But You can die waiting ! And if You need a stay in hospital. You can die waiting for a bed ! The bus system is not very good either. average waiting time for a bus is 30 min . The weather is not as good as it sounds . Try standing outside at -18c in with a wind of 40kph and heavy humidity that goes right through You Feels like -40c, now add a 30 min wait for the bus to this . This is why people tend to buy cars , not because things are so far apart, but to escape the cold ! Now let's talk about what was said about Chocolate lake park . The reason it is called Chocolate lake is because of the color of the water ! People are not all that friendly either. It may seem that way at 1st, but as You live there You will begin to see they are NOT all that friendly. However there ARE worse places in Canada to live . PS good paying jobs are hard to find . Getting a job that affords You to pay $1400 a month will be very Challenging ! DML
Hahahaha!! Loved watching you almost roll down that hill! Thanks for this video and your fun energy! You made my day! And it seems like things are under control there regarding this pandemic! Nice to see things looking “normal” for a change! My dream has always been to move to Canada since I first went to Niagara over 30 years ago! But now with the way things are here in the US and our borders closed off, I don’t see that happening any time soon! 😢 But thanks again for this amazing and informative video! You made an instant subscriber & fan out of me! God bless you! 🙏🏻💖
There's been 1% vacancy rate for like a year and it's just getting worse. Nothing but soulless, empty condo buildings being constructed all over for fucking yearrrrrs
You obviously know very little. I suggest Quebec's has higher taxes. If there are no jobs then why is Halifax's population growing so rapidly? Halifax also has a much lower cost of living compared to most other Canadian cities.
Cuz both Dartmouth and halifax is full of druggies gangs and bunch of drama no kid should grow up there that place is no place for a baby to live theres poverty low income full of tough love without the love I lived here my whole life shits crazy here
The city is broke as is the province. There are no decent jobs that pay. You will be taxed into oblivion. Rents are insane. The cost of electricity is among the most expensive in the nation. Food is more expensive than nearly any other province. The price of housing is out of control in the city. Way over valued. The valley is more reasonable. The entire province is liberal halifax being far left liberal. Its nice to visit but not a place id return to. Born and raised. Rear view mirror thank god.
We've actually been thinking about the possibility of moving there. One important aspect I think would have been great to cover is employment. How easy is it to secure? What industries are in demand or have good opportunities out there? Otherwise, really great video and hopefully it is a place we can at least visit in the future!
Bang on! I really found your opinion honest and accurate. I have been living in Halifax since last three years and found everything you said totally relatable.
I love halifax! I hope to get the opportunity to moving there through immigration program pilot next year. would be a dream come true! Your video was amazing. Thank you
@Pasindu Bandara ignore him. He's a racist dickhead. Even though Nova Scotia is known for its kind people there is still many people like the person that commented above. I wish you well and hope you can make the move successfully
I went to university in Halifax back in the 90s and visited frequently for years afterwards with work. I'll always love that place, it gave me some of my very best days (and nights!). The locals are generally more than a little awesome, food is great, it punches WAY above its weight in terms of nightlife and just has this super-fun-yet-relaxed maritime vibe. Best time to go imho is early September. It's still warm, you still get all the cruise ship activity, military/navy ships coming in and out all the time and the university students all come back. For a small city, it is always buzzing with life at that time of year, it's really great.

Good luck!
and $1,400 for a 1 bedroom?? Yikes!! that's crazy! WAY too much for low wages and high taxes.

Taxes are the highest
Services are the lowest
Wages are the lowest
And, I didn't even mention fuel prices....
And, I also forgot the nation's highest air fares for travel.
On a positive, it would be a fantastic place for an off-grid lifestyle.
Moved to Halifax from london Ontario last year and absolutely love it here!! Best decision I've made. Good video
Hey. How do you find the weather ?
I love the sun ,im from Hamilton

Absolutely no doctors available in NS ! I cant return as health care is beyond bad !!
Happy you finally received the care treatment needed .
there was a 50000 waitlist for primary care physician in 2017 and about 2 years before you'd be assigned a primary! and was getting worse
I have been living here in Halifax for the last seven years and never moved to other parts. Loved it and your Channel. Just subscribe it. All the Best.
@ashraf taqatqah Whole Canada is Cold.

Talk about random conversations on the other side of the world 😀
Hi, how about the job opportunity as a cook in Halifax?
it truly is the best city in Canada.
@@OUigot Oh, I fully understood your earlier post. I noted a whiff of racism.
@@EdinburghFive - Yeah, treating Nova Scotians like that is racist.
Me watching this while living in Halifax, UK
This post is an honest assessment of current hfx.

Good afternoon. Can you tell us more about Halifax? In particular, about the weather, work, entertainment, and more
Really thinking of moving from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia in a few years 🤞
Halifax seems like the most ocean cities in Sao Paulo State, in Brazil. Small cities, nice people, slow rhythm (in a good way) and a vibrant life at summer.
For sure, Halifax seems like a city where I'd love to live, to escape from a chaotic city like Sao Paulo. Yes, the state and the city has the same name, like New York.

$1400 monthly for a 1 bedroom apartment? that's terrible. I live 20 minutes from Vancouver, where the average cost of a two bedroom apartment is $1200
Having lived in Toronto and knowing people who lived in downtown Vancouver, i can say that $1400 is beyond cheap!
Are there enough jobs for it professionals in Halifax ?
Only reason I'm watching this is because I flew through Halifax and St. John's during my trip from NY to Italy.

the only thing holding Halifax back is low wages and outrageous cost of living RELATIVE to wages.
If you can land a mid-high paying job then yes it's the nicest city in Atlantic canada by a mile.
Example Moncton/Fredericton/SaintJohn (NB) wages are 1% lower but the cost of living is almost 50% cheaper so your money goes WAY further.
Ahahahaha when he said halifax was affordable to live I had to stop watching as I cried laughing.
I don't really agree with this video ,
One thing You need to know, medical care is difficult to get , especially if You are
Seriously I'll.
If You go to a hospital for emergency care,
You can be waiting
16 hr to see a doctor.
Once You see a doc.
You can know You are getting good care.
But You can die waiting ! And if You need a stay in hospital.
You can die waiting for a bed !
The bus system is not very good either.
average waiting time for a bus is 30 min .
The weather is not as good as it sounds .
Try standing outside at -18c in with a wind of 40kph and heavy humidity that goes right
through You
Feels like -40c, now add a 30 min wait for the bus to this .
This is why people tend to buy cars , not because things are so far apart, but to escape the cold !
Now let's talk about what was said about Chocolate lake park .
The reason it is called
Chocolate lake is because of the color of the water !
People are not all that
friendly either.
It may seem that way at 1st, but as You live there You will begin to see they are NOT all that friendly.
However there ARE worse places in Canada to live .
PS good paying jobs are hard to find .
Getting a job that affords You to pay $1400 a month will be very Challenging !

Halifax is experiencing rapid growth. The largest group moving to the city is the mid-twenties to mid-forties age range. Why? Because there are jobs.

As an ex-US Navy Officer who has visited Halifax here's my biggest endorsement of Halifax: THE LOWER DECK (Best Bar in North America).
I want to move to Canada from nz, looking for a small town. Can anyone recommend a place ?
I went to university in Halifax back in the 90s and visited frequently for years afterwards with work. I'll always love that place, it gave me some of my very best days (and nights!). The locals are generally more than a little awesome, food is great, it punches WAY above its weight in terms of nightlife and just has this super-fun-yet-relaxed maritime vibe. Best time to go imho is early September. It's still warm, you still get all the cruise ship activity, military/navy ships coming in and out all the time and the university students all come back. For a small city, it is always buzzing with life at that time of year, it's really great.
