I've been in Toronto for 30 years. Video is accurate. If you're moving here, be prepared to spend a lot of money on everything...and traffic. It takes long to get anywhere here...whether you're driving or taking public transit. Very bike friendly and downtown is quite walkable.

As a Canadian living, working and now retiring in Toronto, this video describes it well. I value the diversity. Every race creed and culture is well represented and live in relative harmony. That brings me to my second thing, the food. In the US immigrant cultures are more assimilated into an American culture. In Toronto it is a collage of native cultures and with that comes the restaurants and grocery stores that cater to the world cuisine.
After that, I appreciate the neighborhoods and parks. I live steps from the Humber river and therefore have miles of nature trails with everything from rustic forest by the river to manicured gardens. I also love High Park. And then the lake shore.
It is a great place. But it's expensive, and you have to look for the good stuff. It's not particularly attractive unless you venture out to search for all the little nuggets of greatness.

I bike everywhere in the city and you can do pretty much the whole downtown core on a bike at pretty close to the same speed as the TTC or driving given Toronto's traffic. Personally I don't E-Bike because I hate exercising and getting a big chunk of my exercise in at the same time as I am getting from point A to Point B in the city basically counts as killing 2 birds with one stone.

Really nice video, especially when you talk about the high cost of living. For the summer, I would emphasize how bad the humidity is. Those humid days make being active a chore. You become a pool of sweat just being outside doing nothing which is difficult if you like playing sports. For people moving to Toronto from a dry heat, the humidity is a big change. Yeah it is not humid everyday during the spring and summer but air conditioning is still a must if you are in an apartment. Without air conditioning, the heat could lead to some sleepless nights.

Don't forget the Theatre District in Toronto's Entertainment District, which also is the third largest English-speaking theatre district in the world, after West End in London and Broadway in New York. You can pretty much catch the same shows in one of many historical theatres in the Theatre District, including the mentioned Roy Thompson Hall (also used for musicals, plays, along with the usual schedule of orchestras and choirs), and the oddballs like Massey Hall and Ed Mirvish (because they are physically located outside the theatre district), that are already shown stateside and across the pond, in addition to some awesome "Canadian"-produced works (e.g. Come From Away, Anne and the Green Gables: The Musical)

Biggest con is that Toronto is expensive as hell. Cheaper than New York or London though Canada is expensive in general but Toronto is even worse than other parts. Housing, rent, hydro, travel, food , leisure activities, nightclubs(etc). Basically a playground for the wealthy now. I live outside the city now but I still love Toronto

    • @bobbbxxx

Hmmm... I'd question that food, gas, or nightlife is more expensive than cities like Vancouver or Montreal; I'd say the opposite. Prices in the rest of Canada are not nearly as low as people seem to think, even in small towns. Wages are also higher in Toronto than many of the cities and towns, as well. Toronto is way cheaper than many world cities; way cheaper and the apartment sizes in Toronto are really big compared to large world cities. If people are looking to move to a "cheap" country, they may consider a developing nation because most developed Western nations can be expensive to live in.

    Very helpful!
Biking is certainly the way to get around (avoid traffic!). I also USE the TTC, UBER, and Zipcar. That way, I rent-out the pkg space from my condo! SAVE SO MUCH MONEY!! Ideally, your accommodation is near a subway station (esp. on the University line). Being packed-in somewhere in the heavily condo-ized areas near the lake may be too much, for some, but they also provide the benefit of being close to the highway (Gardiner). Granted, Toronto is expensive. But it also provides amazing perks. E.G. MANY free outdoor skating rinks in winter. It's clean. And it's still relatively safe.
P.S.: Every Torontonian pronounces the city name as if it only has one "t": T'ronno. When we hear somebody pronounce that second "t", we (the humble, gracious folk that we are) know that the speaker is from "the Out-World".
    Which begins at Bloor.

traffic made me leave Toronto. Can take easily 2 hours to drive across in rush hour. There's a paid option highway north of Toronto called the 407 for which you'll be billed more $ if you don't get a prepaid transponder.
On winter, it took me over 4 hours to drive from mississauga to Markham. The summer is quite hot and humid, bring plenty to drink. Everything is very $$$$. The variety of different ethnic food is great though. Public transportation is really packed during rush hour but fairly reliable generally. There are different ethnicities neighborhoods.... except French. There are clustered Chinatowns in all 4 directions including lower town. It does stink in the summer as a lot of food is left outside in the garbage to rot before getting picked up for the dump (mostly on Spadina). There is easier access to some flights from center island rather than drive to the airport (west of the city). There's a boat/ferry to travel to/from the island and a shuttle bus to get to the ferry from the main subway station called Union. There's a faster (25 minutes) train to the large airport (in mississauga) for higher price than the subway + bus. Yonge street is the Main and crosses the city north-south. It is the longest street in Canada as it extends to other cities north of Toronto. The main east-west street is Bloor. Cottage people will clog the highways going north from spring to fall Fridays and south on Sundays. Try to avoid a 6 to 8 hours at 30km/HR drive which would normally take approximately 3 to 4 hours without said traffic. Rush hour traffic starts at 2pm and eases up around 7h30 pm. Morning rush hour is from 6 am to 11 am. Parking downtown for an event can be costly. Last I was there 20$ to 50$/hour. The beaches get really busy in the summer because it's cooler than the rest of the city (kinda). Main shopping mall downtown (Eaton center) has long been surpassed by the Mississauga Malls in the west (parking there is more affordable and not as crowded). So it's not affordable to live unless multiple people are chipping in. I make 47$/hour, FT and can't afford to live there.

@@benjamindiaz432 ive lived there for 17 years straight and have recently moved to Calgary just over 6 months ago. I will say this: living in Toronto while earning 35$ an hour will definitely be enough to scrape by but the question is, are you planning to buy a home in near future? or are you just gonna rent the entire time while you're living in Toronto? Whatever your answer might be Toronto is just simply not worth it whether you buy or rent! Your salary/ expenses ratio will disappoint you. Would highly recommend to look elsewhere. Here in Calgary for example tax is just 5% a bungalow can be purchased for as low as 300k, and a decent 3 bedroom house for about 500k-600k ( same one in Toronto for about 2 mill). Plus you have the rocky mountains just around the corner and frequent northern lights display show and so much more. On the other hand you can consider east coast cities like Halifax for example where you can buy a house for even cheaper and cheaper and is surrounded by beatiful landscape and ocean.
      Finally I will say this:

    Some things to add:
    1. It gets dark EARLY in the winter. In mid-December, by 4:30pm it'll be completely dark out.
    2. Use the TTC to get around downtown. Don't bother driving. It's not worth it downtown as there's way too much construction, ludicrously expensive parking, and lots of traffic. Outside of downtown, parking + traffic will be easier, but don't underestimate the TTC. You can transfer from busses, streetcars, subways all with 1 fare. Trust me, the monthly price of the TTC is so much cheaper than monthly car insurance + gas.
    3. There is SO MUCH construction in the city. As Torontonians say: "there are two seasons in Toronto: Cold and Construction"
    4. Lots of major roads (Yonge, Danforth, etc) now have bike lanes. A lot of people bike, albeit it's not the safest outside of down/midtown.

    • @nixontnguyen
      @nixontnguyen 2 роки тому

Bike lanes are the worst in downtown Toronto, especially the Bloor Street West / East. Toronto city counsellors aren't the brightest. On both sides there are bike lines which reduce one lane going each way. Have you ever witnessed EMS or police car driving through Bloor St W on emergency calls?! I have, and they were NOT moving at all because of the one lane west and one lane going east. I have seen with my own eyes, the cars can't get out of the way because of the bike lanes and EMS and cops cars are stuck in traffic.

Video seems accurate. Although I noticed you quoted the average daily high for July and the average daily low forJanuary. This is misleading because the low typically occurs in the middle of the night. Over the last ten years, the average daily high in Dec, Jan and Feb was 3, 0 and 0 respectively. Many days are cold as hell. But over the whole winter, many days are actually well above freezing. I think most Torontonians don’t realize this.

The only good thing about Toronto is that it isn't the worst big city in the world but it is still a big city and it isn't New York City although it would like to be. It is generic as can be and as Anthony Bourdain said, meh. I'd say really pay attention to the neighbourhood you're moving to because it matters a lot depending upon what you value. If you're looking for young hip spots I'd say Parkdale/Queen west, the Annex and the Danforth are the best spots for cheaper options while still being downtown(ish). You get what you pay for here though (mostly older houses in slight disrepair). If you're really looking to save money and willing to commute; Etobicoke, Scarborough and North York are good options especially if you want more space for less. If money's not an issue and you want luxury then the Financial District and the Waterfront are for you, but in my opinion they lack a lot of character since its just a ton of condo development constantly. Other notable areas are the Junction, Roncesvalles, the Beaches, Leslieville, and Cabbagetown. I'm generally of the opinion right now that the East side (east of the Don Valley) is the best bang for your buck right now with a lot of great restaurants and bars while still being cheaper than downtown, not to mention not having to deal with all the craziness of downtown as well.

High cost of living is relative. $500k for a 1-bedroom condo would be cheap for a New Yorker. Aside from the high cost of everything, there are many things to love about Canada's largest city. It can boast of being the most culturally diverse city in North America. There's an abundance of cultural amenities, including the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) and the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) as well as many different neighbourhoods to explore, such as West Queen Street and Yorkville in the heart of the CBD. There's a great healthcare system (not perfect), but better than other leading nations.
