Dokken is releasing a treasure trove of unheard tracks from the band’s early years! The new album comes out Friday 8/28/20 and is called “The Lost Songs: 1978-1981,” and famed frontman Don Dokken explains where and how this came together! He shares why the band had to go to Germany to get a record deal and make a name for themselves, why Ratt bassist Juan Croucier was in the initial Dokken lineup, and how The Scorpions factored into the band’s early success. Dokken talks about his love-hate relationship with guitarist George Lynch and the fist-fights they used to get into on a daily basis, how Metallica blew them off the stage on the Monsters of Rock Tour in 1988, and what he had to do to get his name back after losing the right to perform as Dokken! Plus, Don details the botched neck surgery he had earlier this year that’s left his arm and hands paralyzed, and Don unable to play guitar (or do much of anything really), and the intense physical therapy he’s undergoing in hopes of regaining use of his hands.
Back for the attack is a great album!
I agree!!!!
George Lynch is a beast!
Incredible album
Amen!!
@@lrm215 I agree as well....LOL
*I went to the Houston Monsters of Rock show at Rice Stadium, which was also marketed as the 88' Texxas Jam... It was Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and Van Halen... It was the first Metallica tour with Jason Newstead on bass..., and the first Van Halen Tour with Sammy Hagar, back when Sammy played guitar the whole show, so I got to see Van Halen as a two guitar/guitar and keyboard show... It was the middle of summer with triple digit heat... They were spraying the crowd with water using fire hoses, and you could literally see the steam rising off the crowd... You could smell the sickly sweet reeking combination of sweat, vomit, spilled beer, and weed smoke in the air... There was a massive food fight between the people in the stands and the people on the field... During Dokken's set, Don's wireless mic went out, and while they fixed it, I got to hear the other three go into an impromptu instrumental jam, which totally kicked ass..., and while they might have been burnt out from the endless road, you couldn't tell, as all four of em' were at the top of their game..., especially Don... He sang just like the albums, only with that extra touch of adrenaline from being live... It was one of the best shows I've ever been to... Now in 2020, I wonder if we'll ever get back to the big stinkin' sweaty rock shows... At least I got to see shows like this, back when Rock was really real...*
I was 16 ...didnt go to any of those shows but i remember what a big deal it was in the U.S. .thanks for the story,it took me back an i could almost feel like i was there. Nothin like 80's concerts.
We'll get back to those days eventually, might be a couple of years. Although I seriously think the handshake is out
First concert with my soon to be wife. The fire hoses, the people in the stands throwing the toilet paper rolls down on us, our feet covered in slimy smegma. Metallica probably gave me hearing damage. We actually left around 1030 in the evening while Eddie was still on stage playing his ass off. Good times. Good times. And yes, the wife is STILL with me 👍
Saw this tour at Alpine Valley Wisconsin...
I was at that same show at Rice. I remember Dokken's set being plagued with technical problems and the guys in the band really didn't look happy about it. But yeah, they still shredded. I remember getting hosed down, especially after rushing to the front when Metallica came on (and I remember Kirk being in a really shitty mood). It helped at first but the crowd was so crammed together the humidity just got to be unbearable. Just ended up turning it into a sauna. I also remember the chemical burn down my leg from the zippo in my pocket getting soaked lol.
Monsters of Rock was the ultimate 12 hours of music Ive experienced. So good, I watched it in MPLS, MN ..then traveled back home to see the show at Alpine Valley. Just killer.
RFK stadium washington dc.. my goodness, when metallica came on. that place went nuts... us and 15000 people started started partying in the parking lot the night before.. lol.. the show was on a friday, i think we stayed drunk until sunday... i miss them days, to be young without a care in the world
Ah! The 80’s. It was a great time to be alive!
Dokken!!! My fave 80s rock band. Also, Don released a very good solo album around 1990 which is worth checking out.
It's pure dokken. Great release
Don's solo release was, and still IS the official fifth Dokken album, END OF SUBJECT!
John f'ing Norum on guitar!
Up From The Ashes is such a great album! It’s a shame it never got the love it deserves.
It was only released as a solo album because the rest of the band took him to court over the "Dokken" name and won, so he couldn't use it.
I pushed my way to the front of the stage for dokken, i was 11 years old🤘
Dallas Texas
I saw that tour... dokken did just fine.... nobody had a complaint about them.
I saw this tour in seattle wa at the old Kingdom
Was at the Philly show it was 110 degrees on the field, passed out in the parking lot after the Scorpions played... took an hour to find my car, never should have driven home that day !!!
I was at the same show. Went with my buddies and didn't have a ticket but wound up parking next to some other guys I knew who had an extra ticket to sell. Pure luck. I remember it was a great time, hot, saw two guys fighting and Sammy Hagar was climbing up the scaffolding and light rigors.
That was my very first concert. I was 14 years old and I have never been around that many people before that day and my brother and two other friends were dead center about 20ft from the stage. It was a great concert.
I was there too!
Remember the firehoses on the crowd!
@@rick3747 yup during the Scorpions set, I was drenched, as I had pushed my way up close to the stage !
I was there as well
Love you Don💞☀️ Eighties was a wild ride for sure! If you didn’t live it you can’t understand or grasp the feeling back then, Man some of the best times of my life at your shows. Thank you for your passion and rockin the house always💯🤗♥️
I saw the Alpine Valley, Wisconsin show. I was 15, and it was my first concert. I was at the front of the lawn for Metallica, and so many people left after their set I was able to get up to the 12th row just as Dokken started. It was a great show.
I was at the opening show for the tour at Alpine
I was at the second of the 3 shows at Alpine. Metallica killed it, when Dokken came on, and at the time they were my favorite band, we couldn't figure out what songs they were playing. Lynch wasn't plugged in for one of his solos, they were beyond off. Scorps and Van Hagar crashed it as well. Lastly, we skipped Kingdom Come to drink and eat in the parking lot.
@@basementoflove I slid down the fucking hill so many times, way to much weed and beer.....
@@danielww2000 I was there that day too. It was a picture perfect, summery day.
Was at the New Jersey show at Giants Stadium in '88. Not a Metallica fan,
but the reaction they got from the crowd when they came on was insane. You knew they were going to explode. Dokken, good. Van Halen, OK. Kingdom Come, looked out of place there. But the Scorpions? Killer live, as always. Straight-up pro hard rock band all the way. Later saw them in a club in NJ with 300 other people in '94. Thought I had gone deaf; absolutely great.
Yup.. I was there
Yup, I was at that NJ show, too. I'll never forget it. It was a Sunday, I'd graduated high school the week before. The sea of people going over the walls onto the field when Metallica started, it looked like they were literally pouring over. I saw Scorpions in a club in CT in '94 as well, that tour wasn't doing well for them. That place was packed, and it was the loudest show I ever went to!!!
Not a big VH fan but they killed it live. Dokken absolutely sucked
Saw that show live at the Memphis Liberty Bowl … just excellent. Bucket list type event and D. Dokken is probably the most underrated guitarist of his day.
Same here.
I also saw Monster of Rock 88. At the Liberty bowl in Memphis. ..It truly was a bucket list event.
One of my favorite bands ever. Awesome Chris!
I was at the opening show of the Monsters of Rock at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. My friend won a Monsters of Rock guitar from Eddie Van Halen at the 2nd show.
I was at that show, too! Scorpions rocked!!!
I was there too!
I was at the Monster of Rock Memphis LIberty Bowl July 9, 1988. I met Don on Beale Street. Funny story..i had just had an ingrown toe nail removed and was limping. He was Super cool
I was at the monsters of rock at the Meadowlands in 1988. I was 17, unbelievable memories. Long live Rock!!!
If Eddie Van Halen asks you for your guitar, you give it to him! 😎🤘
I saw the Monsters in Rock in Foxboro, MA. Van Halen blew everyone away, including Metallica. They were the true headliners of the show - I was never a Sammy Hagar fan until that show. Absolutely tremendous.
LOL Like Van Hagar could blow anyone away.
I was there at the Indianapolis show and Van Halen owned it!
And just think, that was hagar at like only 50% because he fucked up his tailbone on that tour.
That was my very first concert in the old JFK stadium in Philadelphia. I went with my brother and two friends and had a blast. I was 14 years old and was nervous because I’ve never been around that many people before that day. Watching George Lynch play Mr. Scary was the highlight of the concert for me. Felt bad for Kingdom Come, they were booed off the stageI. I’m 47 now and still go to concerts with my brother and same two friends.
I was there to Thomas indeed felt bad for kingdom my 1 st time seeing Metallica changed my life there had to be 85,000 -90,000 people it looked that way
Orlando?@@christophercucchi6048
I threw away a comfy summer job to go to the monsters of Rock , well worth it. VH, scorps, Dokken, pre - justice Metallica , kingdom come, fuck yeah!!!
I saw the Monsters of Rock tour in 88 in Arrowhead stadium in KC. Loved every second of it.
My cousin was a big wrestling fan. I would hang out at his place from time to time and we’d get a pizza and watch. I never watched unless I was there ... I was/am more into music with my free-time.
I do remember thinking Jericho was a bit more articulate than a lot of the other wrestlers - didn’t know he was such an informed music guy. Very cool.
Saw MOR at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis. Thank God not outdoors. It was upper 80s and humid outside. Went for van halen and dokken, walked out a scorpions fan. Those guys were tight and on point. IMO they won the day, but what a day of rock and roll.
The Scorpions always put on a good show. Good musicians and singers. Better than many American bands.
I saw the Sacramento concert. It was fun. I remember how high Dokken (band) seemed. I remember the drummer tried to do some kind of rap to rile up the crown and from my perspective, it failed. It's true about the crowd rushing the stage. During Metallica, there were mosh pits going in circles. When Van Halen finished off the night, the stage was rushed hard! I remember I had to drop and crawl out. I felt like I would have died or passed out if I stayed in there.
Monsters of Rock! LA coliseum! It and Dokken kicked ass! They were phenomenal
I was at the show at ORIGINAL MILE HIGH STADIUM in Denver, Colorado...Aug 31 if I remember right ..would have to find my stub...OUTSTANDING Performance by all bands on that bill that day>>>DOKKEN Killed it!!
I was there, too-July 30, 1988-the final show of the tour. IIRC, the playing order was Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions, Van Halen. And Mick Brown destroyed his drum kit, but Dokken had one more song to play. His roadie had to put the kit back together so Dokken could finish their set. And they didn’t play together for a long time after that.
Remember kbpi was playing shit before show or kazy idk I was there dude
I loved Van Halen at Folsom field for 5150 better
I saw them at old Candlestick stadium in SanFrancisco on that tour. It was indeed crazy hot. Twice I made it to the 3rd row to see my favorite bands,Dokken and VanHalen. Seeing Lynch 5-10 feet away I just remember being numb seeing a God like that playing infront of me. Don Dokken had buckets of water, throwing at us to cool us off,we cheered and he laughed his ass off. The energy these bands had on stage was just ferocious. The heat was bad that day and night....like 105 I believe, but the energy was just incredible, you could feel the stage shaking, your body was tired and soaked but you fed off it to see such an amazing show that night. Hours later when VanHalen came out they opened with Hot Summer Nights,Ed was in light blue sweats, had his mini wireless 5150 guitar,I just started freaking out, this was the first time in my life, I had just turned 20 years old a few days before so this was sort of a late birthday gift, and I got to see my favorite musician - Eddie VanHalen infront of me. To this day I get teared eye thinking about it. Just an incredible feeling to finally see Eddie live and so close. Sammy was jumping all over the place,Mike was next to Alex just playing steady while fist pumping and laughing at all of us,big smile on his face. Al was just a monster, huge drum set, pounding those sticks like a crazy man,Bocephus was in full mode that night! After a few songs this wave started, front left to right the crowd on all sides of you made you move,it got out of control, you were pushed, you actually leaned on the person next to you and for a few minutes, you had this excitement and fear that you didnt dare fall to the ground otherwise you were gonna be swallowed up by all those people around you. The heat got way worse when that happened, like the oxygen was leaving and it got to the point where after 3 songs I got the hell out of there,I wound up slowly moving backwards, people anxious to grab the space you were at,after awhile the air was easier to breath, and before I knew it I was around 15 rows back. I actually enjoyed the show allot better after that. But just seeing Lynch and Eddie from the 3rd row was incredible,I'm 52 now,was 20 back then,I wouldn't trade anything in the world for that incredible day. The Monsters Tour was just so bad ass.
I,am a little older than you and we were doing the same thing in the 70s to the 80s good to read your story of the days of youth . My ventures took me to concerts in London, Reading Festival, Knebworth Park and many other wishing you well brother Mark aged 65 next birth date
Don dokken is a great story teller, he tells of ALL the crazy fucked up shit that’s happened back then.
Have you listened to Dana Strum's Ozzy/Randy story? That guy can tell a story...good stuff.
@@beaumanikoth9142 Yes. Heard Dana's Ozzy story right here on youtube. Good story.
Hes also full a shiiiit
I saw the Monsters of Rock tour when they came to Spokane, WA and played at Joe Albi Stadium. When Dokken took the stage, you could tell that they were not getting along well, as both Don and George would go out of their way to avoid each other on stage. Also, when George did his guitar solo, he had his back turned towards the crowd the entire time. You could feel the tension between them, and the end was near for them, and that was sad for sure. Metallica rocked the place and the Scorpions were on fire, and they performed flawlessly! Van Halen was amazing as well, but they cut the show short by about 30 minutes, as Eddie, apparently, was disappointed in the crowd turnout. There were around 30,000 people at the concert. The temperature on the floor of the stadium was over 110 degrees, and there were a lot of people passing out from the heat, and several arrests for various infractions, but it was a great concert.
Lynch Mob show I went to in 92 at a club in South Minneapolis Lynch pulled that same shit and played almost the entire show with his back to the crowd. I think he was pissed then because they cancelled the Minneapolis show at a larger venue and they were now opening for Warrant in that smaller club.
Dokken and Metallica on the same tour all those years ago. I was a teenager and had no way to get there
But my 2 favorite bands ever, loves they were both on Elektra records, and managed by cliff Bernstein. Great job to all.
I remember many front row general admission shows in the 80s where the people dropped like flies regularly from lack of oxygen and had to be carried away🤣🤣
Glad I was a part of it because those days will never happen again.
I Love Dokken! Monsters of Rock , July 9,1988 Memphis TN @ Liberty Bowl Stadium. I was there and Don is right about the heat. I remember it being one of the hottest days I can remember. Thank God for the water hoses!!! In order of appearance, it was Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, Van Halen
I was there too, in Memphis. I remember Metallica being the third band and Dokken was the second, after the Led Zeppelin style one hit wonder.
I was at JFK in Philadelphia for the show. Still have my stub. Great show!
I saw the Monsters of Rock tour at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit in 1988. Me and five buddies took a bus package from Toronto and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen in my life.
ARE YOU A GAYLORD PERSON?
I was there too...but i remember dokken before Metallica..?
@@heikkidtw5992 The order I remember is Great White, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions, Van Halen. It's been 32 years so I could be wrong lol.
1988 was the hottest summer on record in the United States .
B-b-b-but... muh globull warmin!!!
Year of the dragon…
94.7 KMET Fm So Cals home of Rock and Roll 🎸 RIP
The Mighty Met - Hooya too ya
I was there. Actually, went to three T-Jams in a row (86, 87, 88) and saw the VH make up show in 1991 (free at Dallas Alley downtown).
First concert and best concert I ever been to
Maybe not in America. In Europe, I saw the Monsters of Rock in Kaiserslautern in 1983, and in 1984, I saw a show at a stadium in Karlsruhe. The first one was with Whitesnake, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy (2nd to last tour), Saxon, Motorhead, Twisted Sister (and even MEATLOAF!). Second one was headlined by AC/DC, Van Halen, Gary Moore, Accept, and Motley Crue.
Buffalo NY Hotter than Hell. Stayed at the Best Western and Van Halens crew was in room next to us. Drank all night the night before the show and they joined us to drink after they were done setting up. I remember them telling us one guy quit that day. The Show was awesome though
I saw the Show in Maine. Dokken were horrendous. And it was like a monsoon.
I was there too. Rained so friggin hard.
Saw Monster tour in Tacoma Dome 1988. Great show
Van Halen,Scorpions,Dokken,Metallica & Kingdom Come. Tix were $25. That's 2 beers and a decent tip at a show these days!
I was at the Monsters of Rock show in Dallas in 1988 that he was talking about. Don wasn't lying when he was talking about the heat that day. It was easily 120 degrees on the field at The Cotton Bowl .
And the notion that Metallica smoked everyone on the stage is also accurate.
Having attended the show in Washington, DC where it was 90 degrees with a ton of humidity, I feel for the Texas attendees. I have family in Texas and know it can be like an oven.
damn so great that Jericho like Dokken I'm a huge huge diehard fan of Dokken! Full support👑 Don is one of my fave ever ever
George Lynch was always my crush ♡
I was at Foxborough ma & it was hot but worth it. Many years later I have done the same years in a row with my daughter @ warped tour. My fault I raised a well rounded musical , metal maniac ! I found new music as well ! Love the memories 🤘🏼!
I was there in Memphis ..midsouth coliseum. Crazy show. Don is right. Our generation Rocked hard!
Still looking for the song Kill 'Em All.
Saw this concert in Tampa and it was a AWESOME.
the 80s were a wild, wild time. the the great era too, grunge killed off much more than just hair metal.
Awesome stories! loved it.
Scorpions were melodic ,van halen were melodic ,we are melodic and Metallica were out for blood
Back then if u went to a Metallica concert u better have the look that was required or else u were probably getting whit kicked right in line to get in. It was a hardcore crowd.
@@cherobinson6371bulshit I've been to it to their stupid concerts Metallica sucks Kirk Hammett played Out Of Tune I seen them with Judas Priest Suicidal Tendencies Queensryche the ones that really kicked ass and was mean was Testament at Medusa's in Illinois
Saw Dokken on there back for the attack tour they were awesome
Eddie walks up and wants to play your guitar. Hell yes...
Don is ON THE LIST !!!
I was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in 1988. It was so damn hot. I was there to see Dokken foremost. That was a brutal day in the sun. I never seen Metallica before. All I remember is they stirred the crowd in a frenzy. Fist pumping in the air, some giant dude about put his fist through some guy's head. Knocked the guy out then the big dude turned back to the show like nothing happened. I drank so much damn alcohol I didn't feel my sunburn until the next morning. I knew every damn lyric from Dokken, and everyone around had to put up with it. One of the best day's ever. If my future wife would have wanted to get married on that day, she was going to have to marry someone else.
Would LOVE to have seen the look on George Lynch's face as he arrived in the local club/hotel seeing Don DOKKEN AND EVH playing together on stage! 😵💫🤨😳 Bawahaha hahaha Whoooo!!! 😎

I prefer 7's or 8's to 10's - they're usually wilder and sluttier than the perfect model types.
Agree with that..those 10's are too prissy & whine when they break a nail..
I learned in high school chicks that work at grocery stores put out. Chicks that get money from parents don't put out.
One of the first concerts I ever worked was Dokken
Dokken was one of my favorite bands as a kid. George Lynch was my absolute idol and Jeff Pilson was epic. Don's biggest problem was his jealousy of George. He hated that George was the spotlight of the band. This was supposed to be Don's band but everyone was there to see George.
Don is still a badass.
Brian Long What’s wrong with Don telling his truth? George, Mick and Jeff were cokeheads. They’ve never denied it. Don liked wine and Valium- he’s admitted this. I also don’t agree that Don was jealous of George. George was always bitter that the band was called Dokken. George joined Dokken- not the other way around. Shadowlife was an album George, Mick and Jeff wanted to do which is why it does not retain the classic Dokken logo.
It takes two
Nope other way around George actively sabotaged the band especially in the 90s he's the reason they were dropped from Columbia cause he didn't wanna do radio shows, and then he specifically wrote his share of songs for Shadowlife to kill off the band
That was such a fun tour.
I saw that huge show at JFK stadium in Philly!! Stadium isn’t there anymore
I saw Monsters of Rock in Oxford,Maine of all places. Torrential rains that day. ‘‘Twas crazy.
Monster's of Rock was awesome. Great rock n roll... Buffalo June 19, 1988 Hot as hell that day and I did not care. You couldn't have asked for a better day to enjoy a show like that.
I was at the orange bowl show. I will never forget it!!! Especially my black eye I had for a month!!😂
Great interview.
Saw the Tampa show. Fantastic.
I was there!!!! Pontiac silverdome..Detroit
We love you Mr jericho!!!!!
I was at the Memphis show..a good one...ghastly hot also...Sammy had a firehose in one hand, and a mic in the other...he saved the day!
I'd watched them opening for AEROSMITH on January the 24th of 1998.
The only problem, AEROSMITH was then on drug rehab. So, all I'd watched was DOKKEN for 2 & a half hours.
I was at that show in Dallas
Too High to Fly is the ultimate Dokken tune.
Concert was freaking Awesome
What the hell is he talking about saying Metallica and Van Halen hadn't toured for several years? Maybe a year for each band.
Saw both shows at the Akron Rubber Bowl that year. One day was incredible hot....they were spraying the crowd with hoses and throwing buckets of water on everyone. I thought the order was perfectly fine....I'm sure most fans didn't really give it much thought.
Got a drum stick from Kingdom Come! Great show....great memories!
1. Kingdom Come 2. Metallica 3. Dokken 4. Scorpions 5. Van Halen.
Kingdom clone,Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions and Van Hagar's first tour... Awesome
saw dokken open for judas priest in 1986, then at two monsters of rock 1988 concerts. at each concert they had big sound problems and cutouts
I was at the last show in Denver, didn't know that was it for them (for a while anyway), they didn't seem very happy on stage.
JFK Stadium Philadelphia Pa. I was there!
I was at that Dallas TX Monsters of Rock show! KILLER!!
Love AEW DYNAMITE CHRIS JERICHO
I piled in my buddy's van with 3 other friends and we were headed to Giants stadium to see this show. I wanted to see Metallica,Van Halen, and Dokken and I was fuckin' stoked! The van breaks down about 10 minutes outside of Brewster NY. Seven years later and I have tickets for the "Dysfunctional" tour and when my friend and I get to the venue we find out that the show is canceled,Don is sick and can't go on. WTF?!
At least I got my money back for the second missed Dokken show. 🤷
Great story Don
Don's memory is shot to hell. He claimed Metallica hadn't toured in a long time...smfh. I guess he never heard of the Damaged Justice tour 88-89 or Damage Inc tour 86-87.
That was a great tour but the heat was ungodly
Just got lucky is a badass song I don't know why he would be embarrassed of it 😮
"Searchiiiiiin ......killin em alll!" Lmao
Done voice was strong I believe him when he says he was burned out
Dons a Legend but his voice is 100% shot now, time to hang it up.
If you can find Ken Tamplin singing any songs on his original UA-cam channel, he proves age is NOT a factor in the voice going, these fossil dinosaurs 🦕🦖 hanging on for one more $$$ is sad and pathetic.
@@kevinwalsh4652 Oh I know Ken he is amazing for sure.
That is so scary....I had something similar with my right arm. Thankfully I got 2 rounfs of nerve blocks. But even the surgery they say may have to happen in the future is only a small incision in my neck with a plate, and a couple screws
It’s amazing with all the technology that back operations are still so fraught with risks and complications- especially considering Don has the resources to choose from the finest surgeons in the country.
Correction , the 2nd tour with Sammy with VH. ou812 was after 5150. FYI
I was at the Giants Stadium show in Juy 88. Don was lying about the heat. It was freaking 🔥!! He also wasn't lying about having to follow Metallica. Dokken had no business following them, Metallica absolutely ruled the day!!
Pontiac Silver Dome great show!
Dokken was so boing in Pontiac. I remember upper deck people throwing those brown paper towel rolls down on the lower levels. Saw someone knocked out. Those were heavy as shit.
“ How do I go out there and sing JUST GOT LUCKY after they just sang KILL EM ALL”?
YES! 🤘
God bless you brother
I was at that show in Dallas and had a girl on my shoulders during Metallica. They were continually spraying the crowd with huge firehoses. I forgot my buddies had gotten my to hold the joints in my cigarette pack. When I got back to my seat, they were all soaked and they were pissed at me. Not to worry, we laid them out on the blistering concrete and they were dry in 15 minutes. Good times.
Monsters of Rock was my first ever concert.. still remember it to this day, Metallica owned the show, only VanHalen kept up to that level.
