    The Bridgestone MB series bikes are classic and this 1992 MB-1 is an awesome example. Restoring it was a pleasure and I was more than happy to help get this one ready for the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective.

    I had this bike and loved it it was my first big bike splurge, I think it cost around $1000 in 1992. I was working at Extreme Bike shop in Mesa AZ at the time and got a little discount. This came with top mount friction shifters, everything was XT. Bridgestone made a marketing pitch at the time that friction shifters were the way to go, they were simple and you could self adjust. They pushed back on the index shifting that was showing up on most bikes at that point. It was sold as a fully ridged bike, they also claimed the national flex in the ritchey logic forks were all the suspension you needed. I added a manitou fork as well to help smooth out South Mountain. I always wished I kept the original fork when I moved it dad bike. Loved to see you work on a MB-1

    Hah, RJ the bike guy is great. One funny thing. I told him about the nickel trick for grips, which I learned from you, and he made a tip video from it😅 full circle

    This is great!
    I’m still looking for a specialized hardrock sport in silver with purple lettering. Size XL. That was my first bike. My brother tore it apart when I left home and my parents tossed it. 😢

    I still ride my 1992 MB-4 which I purchased new in Columbia, MO. Great bikes! The OEM MB-1 would have had a Ritchey Stem, low and long, and a very low rise/flat bar I'm glad you didn't put a riser bar on it.. I had installed a RockShox Mag-21 on mine. It now has the original fork reinstalled.

    As much as I love the newer bikes, it seems as I approach 60, the more I appreciate the older 80's and 90's era bikes. I wish that I could find my old Schwinn High Sierra from 1991 and restore it, but I am sure that it was sold or donated long ago. I built up my 1998 Barracuda XC URT frame into a "softtail" gravel bike with a mix of old and new parts. This "Frankengravel" as I call it has stoked my desire to get out more on trail and road after getting into a bit of a slump and not being motivated.
    I encourage viewers to start their own project bike if they're in a bit of an unmotivated state. Oh, and build it the way you want no matter how weird it may look. My Barracuda looks pretty funky with its URT frame and a rigid, suspension correct fork, 1 x 7 drivetrain, thumbshifter, and Paul Components Cross Stop 3's actuated with old moto style Dia-compe brake levers.

    that collective is pretty neat. I used to go to the salt palace for the outdoor retailer back in the day, twice a year for about 10 years. was there the tornado hit and damaged 2 of the cranes building the tabernacle. I brought a bike and a burley flatbed modified for my dog. drove in from orange county, ca. wish the collective was around then...

    I have a MB-1 set up as a commuter. Also have a Vitus-copy RADAC aluminum. Funny thing about both of them is that the seat tube bottle mounts are both off-center. Weird that both would have the same flaw for being such different design.
    Not sure about '92 but SunTour XC Pro was on mine. Vantage rims, Sugino made crank and the Avocet seat were original. Don't toss that seat - it's comfortable!
    Interesting notes about the one I have - it has a 68mm BB like a road bike and has 126mm spacing with original 7sp instead of 130mm.

    I’d love to see you re-furb the forks. The first 4 Manitou versions are beautiful CNC works of art. SFP has all the the elastomers and seals.

    I've seen more than one MB and an XO that had the same Avocet saddle. It was either a popular replacement or upgrade - or maybe just came standard?

      I know an Avocet saddle was stock but it looked more like a Turbo. This was an extra big saddle.

    Collectible? Maybe the same way Beanie Babies are.
    My dad got into cycling on a Bridgestone BR-1 hybrid in '93'ish, then bought a 95 KHS Flite.
    I really respect the heck out of what you're doing, but to call any of those bikes "collectibles" is very misleading.
    Fun to work on? Yes. Do they have value? Sure. Should that bike be sold for over $200? Absolutely not.
    Hence why Moab is no longer the mountain bike capital of the world.
    I live in a 400 sq ft apartment with 5 bikes. A Bridgestone is a fun project, but not in any way "sought after".
    You're drinking that Utah water.

    • @moto.squish
      @moto.squish 19 днів тому

      Interesting take, but your sort of wrong. Bikes like the MB-1 are collectable, because they are rare, they were desirable if not even an asperational bike back in the day, and middle aged riders especially those who can appreciate what bridgestone was back in the day, would like to have one of these. Is it going to sell for as much as its listed for… hard to tell. But i know that there are riders or colectors out there who would like to own this and other bikes from the late 80s and early 90s

    • @TheArimatheus
      @TheArimatheus 19 днів тому

      @moto.squish if they were rare, there wouldn't be three of them in the same shop at the same time. 🤔

    • @TheArimatheus
      @TheArimatheus 19 днів тому

      @moto.squish I appreciate what you're saying - I have a 98 rockhopper frame that I've turned into a lamp. It was my first XC bike at age 14. Burnished finish, 15" Nitanium. It took me about 2 hours to find that exact frame on eBay.
      Point me to the website where people are actually collecting that mb-1 frame. Maybe in Utah where people have nothing better to do than collect children in basements. 🫣

    • @TheArimatheus
      @TheArimatheus 19 днів тому

      That's not a dig on the people of Utah - but most of their single family homes have more square footage below ground than above, just the nature of the architecture.
      And statistically speaking, they have more children per family than most any other state.
