  • I want to build an off-grid homestead in Northern Ireland where I will grow and feed my family with chemical free and full of nutrients-packed food on a daily basis. I want to create a healthy lifestyle that my three kids will look back on fondly and to a place they will eventually call home.

Good morning, Pete. Or at least it’s morning where I am.
That was a lot of concrete mix. Too bad you can’t freeze it and save it for later!
Walls are going to look great.

I said it was a bag mixer, and it would be known as a half bag mixer from the old days when portand cement came in 50kg bags. These bags are now 25kg.
I'm in no hurry to build the walls because it's the cheapest part lol

Use lime mortar and you can keep it for later!
I’ve got a batch of lime cooking away nicely just now….

@livingoffgridinscotland I don't know much about lime mortar. What jobs are you planning on doing with it?

@@LaidBackHomesteader I run a property company in Scotland that buys and sells around 100 properties a year.
I use lime mortar, render, plaster on a daily basis for building, rendering and plastering to solve a multitude of damp issues that gypsum and nhl cement based products cause…
Gypsum and cement based products are a quick fix because they use a chemical reaction, but they suck damp and are unforgiving…..

@@livingoffgridinscotland cool ive been watching chris harbour for years on youtube along with quite a few other regenerative trades men. Actually told my boys we should buy a mountain and build a cave instead of a house earlier. They didnt seam too keen on sleeping on a rock bed tho! .
Ill look into the lime building aspect now. Seen your concrete slab video by the way. I laid a concrete slab a few weeks ago. tough going it is

    Is that shed finished yet?

No. I haven't been doing much up at the yard all winter. From start Feb 2025 I'm making videos again so it's on the list of things to do. Today I've been working on laying the hedge along the road side of my yard it needs to be done before end of the month. Have you ever done any hedge laying?

@@LaidBackHomesteader yep, but not done hedgelaying since 1999 when we moved to Scotland, no hedges here, we did a really big one in the mid 90’s
I was more into competition ploughing when I was younger

@livingoffgridinscotland I have never seen it in northern Ireland before. I was parked up beside a canal near Stoke on trent and I thought, I'll have a go at that one day.🤔 today is that day. I did 7 metres in 4 hours. Should be a bit quicker tomorrow

@ yes, well I grew up just below Stoke on Trent, all the ploughing matches were ploughing and hedgelaying matches, very common winter pastime… a good man could lay a 20’ tall hedge with a loader tractor and rope and still make a good job…. A lot of the hedges they lay in competitions are much smaller stuff than was really layed back in the day

Keep an eye.out for the video should be out In a couple of weeks and let me know what you think. There will be no cap on it tho I don't fancy picking hazel out of all the hedges in the area lol
