Laid Back Homesteader
United Kingdom
Приєднався 6 кві 2022
My name is Peter. I live in Northern Ireland. In February 2022 I purchased 4.25 acres of rural land. I hope to create a more self-reliant lifestyle for my family. I aim to have birds for both and meat and eggs to grow vegetables in a no-dig market garden using regenerative agricultural practices. Eventually I would like to own pigs, sheep and even a cow!
The first section of work entails making an entrance onto the land and converting an area into a yard. I will then develop the site further with fencing, farm buildings etc.
This is not going to happen over a few videos. All infrastructure needed to make this lifestyle a reality is self-funded. My goal, to create a place where my wife and I can make lots of memories with our kids aged 8, 4 and 2 to watch their personalities develop having lots of fun experiences on the farm.
I will document the homestead transformation and place it on UA-cam. Maybe inspiring you to do the same...

Trevor’s good on that thing!
He is right and handy around machinery now. Hi Gregg, long form video coming soon. Well get that ball rolling again I can already see the evenings growing 👌
Binged watched all your videos over Christmas. When you going to bring us more long videos?
I'll be back at it in February. What you think of the build?
Looking good, Pete
Thanks Gregg. Still haven't goy started with videos, but I'll get to work this week 👍
Where I am i have to amend the sandy soil with bentonite. Free draining is good but remember that nutrients will leech in soil that is too free draining.
Oh its not that free the ground is full of the rush plants. They favor wet conditions. Where do you live? Hopefully, over time, I can increase the organic layer and increase fertility
Hey Peter just wondering why your not putting out videos lately? It’s been like 2 or 3 months now all I’m getting is them shorts, just wondering what’s on the go
Hi Ray. I stopped to rest my back, and a week turned into 3 months! I will have a video out start of February where I'll explain what ive been up to. I just shot it today actually. Still have done any work but I'm going to before the weekend. Cheers
The shorts were to keep you entertained while I was on the bluff. Do you enjoy them? I plan to keep them going to widen the audience. Let me know thanks
@@LaidBackHomesteader yes I don’t mind them at all once in a while. All good now👍👍
Ruff as 'A' holes
Yes a Insert for the winter.
Are you talking about an insert at the end of the pipe? I've one in it
No sand on ur mains classic
It's not mains I'm keeping this project off grid. Sand is expensive lol
Wish i had a yard 😂
If it all works out, I will own it in 2053!
U need to use an insert otherwise the joint wont hold in winter xx
Thanks for the heads up
Is that Y for electrical?
Yeah.im running.cables to 2 different locations. Either side of my lane
How’s it going, Pete? What’s your weather like currently?
Weather was very high for time of year at 12 degrees then it took a massive drop to -4. A week later, it's back up to 10 degrees which is crazy. The plants don't know what to be at! How is the weather with you? My bro is in the middle of a winter storm
Sounds pretty much like yours, up and down. Supposed to be -9 degrees F this weekend. I think your brother's storm has played out, at least for now. I hope your wife and sons are doing well.
@gregganderson1454 yes thanks for asking. Ivor has been promoted to driving the car and Ezra has been driving the quad with me on the back off course!! I'm going to start making videos again, from tomorrow in fact 👌
@gregganderson1454 -9 is cold stay safe and keep the soles of your feet at the fire Gregg. Happy new year!👍
Next time just use some dish washing liquid to make the cement smother and easier to apply, works the same way
Fish will be blowing bubbles lol
I would love to pop by and see your setup at some point…I would love to do this
If you in the area no problem
@ I am near saintfield in county down
@Notjustaprettyface_candyb cool I live just outside Cookstown. Keep in touch if your near here email me I think the address is on the homepage 👍
Great job how high is the ibc tank to the tap,s
I was supposed to measure it but never got round to it. I'd say it's 8 metres above the height of my yard. Good flow when the tank is full ok when below half a tank
I'm going to add solar this year and then I'll have a pressurised system throughout my land. It will make a big difference when watering plants etc
@@LaidBackHomesteaderI'm wondering would it fill a low pressure water trough without the solar pump
@myleswhelan2385 100% yeah, that's what I'm doing with sheep and chickens
@myleswhelan2385 no good for watering the veg garden tho
Sure it’s not a day if it’s not wet in Northern Ireland 😂
lol, playing in the mud makes you happier
Spot on, and i bet that machine has ssen some jobs
She's well shook for sure. Did our job well. The digger driver didn't agree lol
Gas work
Grease first
My uncle pikey
Think your figures are a little off there buddy
Words getting scrambled on camera
Marty mone should have been the soundtrack to this one lol
It works out a lot of work for expensive chicken for dinner tho doesn't it? I love the idea but i thought it would be more cost effective
Yes more money but you can't buy that healthy bird from any shops. I've given a few, almost half the birds out to friends and reports are all positive. There is a yellow tint from the birds and they didn't shrink after they were cooked. If I was doing multiple batches it would be more cost-effective
So as for the chickens that died before the slaughter day? Can those not be eaten or is the meat no good?
I wouldn't chance it. There were two about to die and one that had fluid inside the carcass. I know now that it was organ failure, but I didn't fancy eating them either. Maybe if I was starving, I'm a bit of that lol
Now that’s some wet soil!
Is a flail mower towed behind the quad on the list? 👍
Thought about it but wouldn't have the money. Maybe in time. More sheep for planned grazing in 2025
When you dropping a new video
With the time of year, short wet days, lack of funds and a sore back ive lost motivation but I will be posting again in January. I'm been going through old videos making short content for you to watch
Its amazing the work thats being done and in short period of time and cant wait to see the progress in the garden
Thanks dean
That soil seemed pretty dry considering it rained all night.😎
Yeah the water won't seep through the clay lololol
Looks like some pretty good topsoil!
Be better when I get it removed winks 😉
Love this experiment. If you measure the weight gain per kg of post, I think the char would win.
Watch and see 👀 😆 I honestly think all the wood will rot over time. I hear of posts in the ground for many years but I recon they are from old hard wood. Today's posts are made from fast growing soft wood. They don't last.
Hi, Pete I see you’re getting it done!
Yes I am!
New follower here just came across your content so i am playing catch up. Would be nice to see what costs/inputs you were putting in along the way.. but if you dont wish to disclose no harm either. Looking forward to the rest of journey either way
Hi Dean it's hard to say because I've been pulling in alot of favors. Out of all the machines you will see to date the only one to cost me money was the dumper with the cab! It was 1 weeks hire. I own the land three years this January and I've spent £30k to date. All the money spent is one time buys well pretty much, moving forward I want to have a few more animals, reducing the shopping bill is the way forward and maybe start a barn to hold animals in winter. Thanks
@LaidBackHomesteader sounds very reasonable over 3 years with all that you have done 👍 mighty work being done, great to see it taking shape
@@DeanCronin147 Yeah Im very lucky to have so many friends that are willing to help. That first digger I had in this video (above) I had for 6 weeks lol and the guy bringing me the gravel did so over a few weeks but told me he'd bring his over to grade the yard if the digger i had went to another job. If there's a will there's a way!
@LaidBackHomesteader when everybody is willing to lend a hand it's a great way to be
Hi, Pete Do you have to have a certain amount of acres to get a farm ID?
There are different categories I'm in 3, the hobby farmer. Categorie 1 allows you to apply for grants. You must be in charge of 10 acres minimum to be in it tho. There is a soil management program in place atm they won't allow.me to attend so I plan to bend the rules and as someone else. I'd there's a will there's a way! 😎
@ Got it!
Was that Bono singing? Lol!
Best of look and looking forward to following along your journey
Thanks
Good luck to you. Hope you planned everything through.
Without a plan, you have nothing. Keep watching while i execute the plan. Note this video is twp years old. Thanks
Hi, Pete. I hope things are going well for you and your family.
Yes all is well. Haven't been posting videos lately but will be back at it by January at the latest. Thanks Gregg
Wide tracks must have her on soft ground 😂😂
Bog like ground. 👍
Any camper for sale
Living the dream mate! recently moved to Poland to take over the wife’s family’s small farm been here 2 months haven’t looked back
I was speaking to you before. Fair play to you. I have two of.ladt years lambs in the freezer 👌
How many sheep you keeping?
I currently have 5 to over winter. When the grass is growing I could manage 25 maybe 30 ish!
Where in Northern Ireland is this?
Mid Ulster
💪🐏
You’ve already come a long way, Pete! I remember your gravel delivery. That was a lot of rock! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Gregg. I haven't been posting lately but I'll get back to it soon thanks again 👍
I'm going to be posting short content from the beginning. It should be a good watch down memory lane 😎
Why put tools in the shade
To stop the sun from bleaching them lol Shade shed Ted lol
@LaidBackHomesteader 😉🤣🤣
2 say money ring local haulage companies that deal in hardcore and soils tel them it's a free tip I've done it on my farm. I don't no how it works in Ireland but hear in Wales u can use u1 and u10 exemption u can bring in 4000 to hardcore and 1000 ton of soil charge them for the soils free tip on hardcore.
2:23 This move scares me, please be safe 👷♂
There was more space than it looked, and Trevor is a highly skilled operator. If I had any doubts I'd have been nowhere near that grinder. thanks for the heads up 👍
Best of luck!
Good luck butty, love to see someone be able to do something so spontaneous and enjoy it!! Subscribed and looking forward to it butt! Love from Wales 🏴
Thanks 3vo338! Check out my long for content I'm 2 years in lol I'm going back to the start and making short form content for you to watch 👍
