    I bought mine from a guy that took care of the maintenance. Did not abuse the truck, and he wanted to upgrade to a 4 door. As his wife was pregnant. It had 195k when I bought it. Now at 335k with routine maintenance. Did a brake job last week. The DPF delete has been done. I will do the EGR delete next month when I am going to flush the radiator anyway.

    bought my 6.4 used and love it. I did my research and I looked at it with a fine tooth comb. bought and paid for great truck never had any issues I change the oil every 5-8k I know its early but its what I do. MAP sensor kills gas milage I change that out when the soot clogs it, add sea foam to the tank every once and a while, made a couple upgrades, change my filters every time. she's been a solid investment.

    Thanks for the information Bill.
    I'm a Lube Tech at the moment and just saw a 2002 F350 7.3L with about 200k plus miles on it. It was beat to shit; the air filter housing was busted, it was leaking oil from the engine, transmission and front axle. And it was consuming coolant. Sad when people just drive their stuff and don't maintain it.

    I love 6.4's; I'm buying them dirt cheap at auctions. I was doing the same thing with 6.0's for several years when people hated them while the bugs were being worked out. Now that the 6 liters problems can be fixed much cheaper nowadays, their value has appreciated. I'll buy 6.4's all day long and many times it doesn't take much investment on my end to make them reliable and functional again.

    505,000 miles on my trusty old 2001 7.3. I love this truck it is very reliable and has plenty of power. I also have a 06 powerstroke and 2015 6.7 ram. I love the 7.3 and the 6.7 ram. I have not owned the 6.0 powerstroke long enough to make a judgement call. But I will say you can not go wrong if you can find a good rust free 7.3 powerstroke.

I know you said in one of your vids "dont buy an aftermarket warranty ", but I asked the dealer for one that specifically covers the egr components (2200$) and sure enough, 6 months later the egr valve failed (3800$). plus a few other repairs along the way. total around 6000$. which is what i paid for my v10 excursion and it never skipped a beat. lol! all of your videos are very informative and I enjoy watching them!

    BTW I bought my truck after it was used under severe conditions by an oil company as a field vehicle and on a ranch. It still had the original factory emissions equipment on it and about 120k miles. I immediately deleted the emissions (except EGR which was deleted later on) and had to replace the oil cooler and torque converter within 800 miles of driving it off the lot. Since then I've done a little more work on it like correcting things previous "mechanics" have broken electrically and the usual tie rod ends and u-joints that wear out every 100k or so. I've had the H&S tuner on it since pretty much day one and I've towed some pretty large loads with it up hills. Large enough that the hose blew off the intercooler one time. Next I'm going to be replacing the up pipes and exhaust manifolds. I just had to replace the engine radiator with a Mishimoto radiator. I guess I should just go ahead and save up for a head rebuild since I can't find a tuner that won't damage them. I am considering a SCT with a custom tune.

      I just finished a Cummins swap in an F350 for a customer who traded the truck with a powerstroke in it for 2 used transmissions. The Fords are ok for a guy who knows how to fix them but if you have to pay someone, it just doesn't make any sense. Worst resale of any truck. I know of 3 fleets now that have gone back to gas because the diesels just don't pay for themselves like they used to.

    • @railroadskater2896
      @railroadskater2896 8 років тому +1

      I guess it's safe to conclude the 6.4 is now officially obsolete. 150K for a 6.4 is bad, and poor resale value???? Sounds exactly like Hyundai cars, when they get near or past that mileage, according to my mechanic. He advised me to steer clear of 2000-04 Hyundia Accents and that an 05 or newer model around 100K is better.......... Maybe people considering a used 6.4 should also google the Maxxforce 7 (exactly the same thing), then find all the horror stories which led to its discontinuation. Hpefully that'll get thru to them.

    Love your videos! I have a 6.4 that runs perfectly because it is well maintained. I have a mild tune not RACE with DPF deleted. I use synthetics and Archoil. Fuel filters are replaced every oil change (6K for me). Expensive? yes, but worth it. truck runs strong and pulls like a beast. Truck has 130K and get 17 MPG all day long, as much as 22 MPG on the way to Florida.

    • @Nater389
      @Nater389 8 років тому +3

      +orion marmion You make me feel good about my 2010 6.4 purchase. Good to hear someone else who hasn't had problems. I do everything you did...though I change my fuel filters every other oil change. I change oil/filter every 5k. I run the Torque Technologies T1 tuner with the "Mild" tune "Level 2" which gives 80hp.

    • @DossKevinD
      @DossKevinD 8 років тому +2

      +Nater389 You should be fine with fuel filters every 10k miles. Make sure you use only Motorcraft (Racor) filters though because the other ones don't fit right.
      I know there are plenty of us with over 200k miles on our tuned, deleted trucks without issue. Just don't beat on it and you're fine.
      The biggest problem I see with tuners is that the 6.4 responds so well to them that people bump the power up and then treat it like a race car.

    • @orionmarmion1613
      @orionmarmion1613 8 років тому

      Doss Agreed. If you beat the piss out of the truck it will die premature. I change my fuel filters more often due to a rusting fuel tank (common on early 6.4).

    my 6.4 is on the original engine and has 180k miles. I think it lasted so long because I don't peel out and the dpf has been deleted. I think most of the blown up 6.4's are from teenagers running 1000HP tunes and trying to drag race Civics and Minivans. Bill what software are you running to diagnose the 6.4s?

    • @Garth2011
      @Garth2011 5 років тому +3

      That's good news and wonderful. Those other folks who won't risk the DPF delete will never get to 180,000 miles. Don't forget the coolant tank cap is defective from the factory and needs replaced with the newer larger diameter spring to contain normal pressure. Those who require the power of diesel engines are stuck...those who want them just to have them need to reassess their reasoning to have one. Gasoline is the best option for now until DPF and EGR systems are either eliminated and replaced with better technology or revised so they do not cut engine life and fuel mileage by 50% not to mention all of the added maintenance costs.

      +BigEnisBurdet stay on your maintenance and delete your truck and it'll probably last a long time. A deleted truck gets better fuel economy and lessens the risk of emissions equipment-related engine disaster.
      My truck gets about 12-15 MPG city and 16-23 MPG highway. I hand calculate the MPG and don't depend on the lie-o-meter in the truck (which almost always tells me I am getting really good MPG).

    I am buying a used 6.4, has 43K miles. But the reason i am moving forward is the dealer has a solid lifetime powertrain warrantee. So hoping if i do have an issue with cylinders or heads, its covered.

  • @bgayney

    FYI a Regen works by post injecting fuel on all cylinders, the fuel lights off on the diesel oxidation catalyst creating heat in the exhaust starting a exothermic reaction burn in the dpf. EGR is shut off during the Regen process.

    Thanks Bill, you may have helped me dodge a bullet, I know nothing about diesels but I recently put $1,000 down on a 2010 6.4 F350 Lariat with 187K miles and watched your video before completing the transaction. The dealership was very understanding of my concerns on the 6.4 but the only alternative they have for my needs is a 2013 6.6 3500HD with 461K on the clock. I'm not the type to reneg on an agreement so I'm going to decide between the 6.4 and 6.6 duramax today because I need something to pull a fifth wheel I'm buying. I'm going to test drive both vehicles again today and check for blowby and make a decision and trade in my very well maintained 2010 Harley Edition F150 with 71K on the clock because my needs have changed. I'm not averse to putting money into whatever I buy to make sure it's reliable and ready to go and your input on the cost of parts on the 6.4 has me leaning toward the 6.6 Duramax even with the high mileage and a little higher cost. I'm going to miss my F150 and all it's creature features but the truck was not designed for towing. Thanks again for your video. There seems to be a lot that can go wrong with diesels in general but buying new is out of the question for my budget and buying used is always a roll of the dice. Both vehicles have clean Carfax and seem to have been well maintained but also used as trucks.

    If the DPF is deleted, and the EGR disabled, and you don't add more than about 80 HP, the 6.4 can be a very reliable motor. Just make sure to add a coolant filter, and change your fuel filters every year and it will run like a champ.

    Bought a 6.4 early 08 build lariat beautiful truck 260k miles been deleted since 180k from previous owner stock tune just deleted no check engine lights only problems I’ve had is a sensor that melted slowly overtime from who ever did the delete they put the ebp sensor too close to the turbo I bought the truck for a cheap price with the plan on 12 valve swapping later got the parts truck and everything I need ready to swap but not going to swap until the 6.4 dies but so far it’s been running strong for a couple years for me now not a professional just giving my opinion as an owner I know the reputation I wasn’t expecting this one I got to last this long but it has maybe I got a good one out of a bunch of crap who knows but I can’t say anything negative about this one

Thanks for the videos. Very informational.

      bills truck burnt to the ground do to an electrical failure... so his advice would probably still be to walk away. and if anyone has a truck like that, they wont let it go for cheap. the parts on a 6.4 are just poorly designed and expensive. no amount of maintenance is gonna save your rocker arms, crank, connecting rods, or fuel system. they will fail you eventually. this video is directed at you lol. hes trying to tell you that no matter how good it sounds, it will come back to bite you. why spend all that money on a 6.4 only to have to drop 6k on the fuel system when it fails. you can literally stud a 6.0 for less than that

    Haha no mention of a low mileage 7.3 PSD as an alternative? Granted, may not be anywhere near as quick as a 6.0 or 6.7, but I sure do love my 03 7.3 to death. Picked it up in the lower region of that $15-20k range with insanely low mileage and couldn't be happier with it. Pulls like a train and does everything I need a Powerstroke diesel to do.

    Hey thanks! Currently looking to upgrade to a power stroke after having a 2014 ecoboost. Didn’t mind an older truck 2008-2010 that had the power I was looking for. After watching this I’m going to hold off until the 2011’s get a little cheaper instead of finding a “good deal” 6.4 like you said. Never owned a diesel before and didn’t know so much extra maintenance could play a role. My 2014 gets reg. Oil changes: coolant flush and honestly that’s about it. Never had a single issue. I only drive it approx 200 miles a month, but do tow a 8.5k trailer every so often. Do 6.7’s need a lot of attention?

    I just traded my 2009 F250 in on a new F150 Platinum. I don't tow anymore and I knew that 6.4 would cost me some big bucks one day. I was going to do a delete and had it all purchased and in fact gave it away with the truck still all in the boxes. I took excellent care of mine, but still didn't trust it. I think my diesel days are over. Enjoy the videos !

      +kirk henike ive seen so many of them either blown up or just blowing a shit load of white smoke. They still arent there yet and its sad to say... i wish they were better trucks. ill stick with my 7.3L powerstroke, duramax and soon to be cummins swapped chevy.

    • @Sackmatters
      @Sackmatters 8 років тому

      Vincent Gambini yes but a factor for lots of people is that every 2 years they cant afford a 60k truck. and to have to get a new truck every two years sucks ass because they are that shitty.

    • @Sackmatters
      @Sackmatters 8 років тому +1

      Vincent Gambini i see your point. up here in alaska weather beats the shit out of vehicles you cant trust a new ford anymore. like heres something interesting. my 2012 denali hd duramax cost 67k new US dollars. i got them down to 57k because of my job. this truck has never and i mean never given me one issue. I also have a 95 powerstroke, it just blew the tranny knew it was coming but oh well. I went to a tranny shop and he said he sees new fords and dodges on a daily basis. he said he maybe rebuilds or installs a allison once a year. so there is one down fall ofr everyone else. the only reason im saying this is because most people in the lower 48 just drive there diesels we use them for work so the fact that you 60-80k truck is dropping a tranny too is bad. i love cummins, id love to own one as well, but for ford ill wait for a new motor new look of the truck and damn a new interior design. I can buy a good truck up here but i know it will have worked and i know ill have to upgrade and maintain until its on the right track. Like this, there are plenty of ford 6.0L powerstrokes blown head gaskets, full leather power everything f 250 short bed for 3k yes 3k, that costs nothing. at that point take your bullet proofing how ever far you want to go spend 7k on it or 10k your still under $15,000 and you have a great truck, then if you want a new look get a update kit for it a thrown on the current gens bed and front clip and mirrors and it looks like a new truck and your still under $20,000 for a fantastic truck. thats where i stand on this.

    • @Sackmatters
      @Sackmatters 8 років тому

      Vincent Gambini ive never heard of day one but ive heard lots of these trucks with this issue. its just a matter of time before that crank bearing or what every it is loosens and and comes out eating the motor while it runs.

    I watch these videos and it breaks my heart and I get more scared with every upload. My wifes father passed away and he had a work truck that is a 2008 6.4 with 113,000 miles. He was a supervisor so the truck didnt tow anything and he kept very good care of it. More or less it was sentimental and we ended up picking it up for CHEAP from the company. It runs beautifully right now and is the full lariat package. I watch these videos and make little subtle hints to my wife about "trading" her dads truck in....which is NOT going to happen. I guess my question is WHAT would it cost me to have you guys do a full DPF delete, EGR delete, 5" exhaust and just the basic tune to make the truck dependable.
