How to *FIX* a Laggy Stream | OBS Best Settings Tutorial

- Even if you have a decent PC and internet, streaming may still be a struggle. I know it was for me as well. In this video I am teaching you the best things I have learned over the past years, while skipping the unimportant things, so you don't waste your time messing with the wrong settings.

x264 OPTIONS: I purposely skipped over the x264 options for a few reasons. Most of you should use NVENC to stream, as it is easier on your PC most of the time. For some of you who do stream with x264, I don't want you to waste your time messing with the different settings. The most important parts of a stream is Resolution, Bitrate, FPS, and ENCODER. The CPU Usage Preset for x264 should stay around veryfast unless your PC allows you to go higher.

hi you nice
wca?
I did the speedtest at the beginning of the video and my upload speed was 11.62 mbps do need a new computer or is there something else i need to do
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a way to log back into an instagram account?
I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@Watson Esteban instablaster ;)
We live in the age of kids telling adults how to stream and I’m incredibly grateful for it.
Seriously helpful knowledge dropped here. Thank you 🙏
As a struggling streamer, this was more helpful than 99% of youtube. Thank youuuu
Much thanks bro! Love your videos, straight and to the point, with actual useful information just like promised in the videos title. What a refresher your content is:)
Thanks man! Means a lot!
Not only did you give us good setting but you told us what each setting does thank you
Great video man, nice video quality and love the dynamic visuals popping in to engage viewers! Picked up a lot of tips and tricks along the way, will put to good use. ;)
Very entertaining to watch. Keep up the good work man. Looking forward to seeing more of this helpful videos.
Clear and concise I like it. Just started streaming yesterday so this helped big time
I haven’t finished the video but that intro was perfect my friend. Concise, informative, and engaging. 👍🏾
this is literally the best fix for laggy stream, thank you!
Bitrate is the size of the file, not the speed (the amount of bits in the video). Your upload bandwidth should exceed this as well as any other apps you're uploading with like chat or the game itself. You can also mathematically determine what the bitrate should be by using (bits/pixel x (width x height) x frame rate)/1000. Also, if anyone in your family decides to upload something at the same time etc. (Note: if you want to be a bandwidth hog, you should be able to prioritize your machine in your router's settings to avoid any other devices interrupting your stream.)
The profile being set to 'high' is the H.264 profile being used for video encoding. This doesn't prioritize anything on your machine, it sets the complexity of the encode.
If your game is running your GPU up to 90% utilization, do not use NVENC, the game is loading down your GPU, use x264 (CPU), vice versa.
If you have a limited connection (e.g. under 5mbps upload) AND/OR your computer can't handle the 1080 encode then go with 720p at 30fps running either 2500kbps or 3000kbps and use profile "main". This will reduce the complexity and size of the file which will free up resources and bandwidth. (Sacrifice 1080 quality for stability at 720).
Also, capture your video directly from the source in OBS, do not capture your monitor. You should have an option in the source menu to add the game itself and not a screen capture, I see a lot of people doing this.
If you're getting a lot of stuttering or jittering when the video plays back, try locking the games frame rate to something divisible by the frame rate you're using in OBS. If you're running 30fps in OBS then lock the game to 30,60,120 fps. This reduces the complexity for OBS and should free up resources.
Setting your Keyframe interval to 1 will fire a keyframe every 1 second and can help reduce latency. Currently they fire every 2 seconds and when the packetizer moves it to segments this can delay it. Segmented playback typically gets between 10 and 50 seconds of latency depending on the platform, when you're running 1 second keyframes it can typically reduce this to 5 to 20 seconds of latency depending on your connection and your viewers. (Yes, your viewer's crap connection can give them latency on the stream)
If you have a second GPU you can also offset the workload by using GPU: 1, this will move the entire streaming workflow to the GPU in your second PCIe slot. The game should always default to 0. (Also, adding an older quaddro card or KP80 server card can handle this, they're cheap too, on a Quadro p1000 I can run around 16 separate encodes simultaneously up to 2160p60@40mbps, it will rip through a 1080 workflow and leave the rest of your computer for the game).
Setting your tuning to zerolatency can also help with lartency and works better than most of the tuning options in OBS.
Under h.264 options, adding scenecut=0 can also prevent frames from being dropped as scenes change in OBS. If you're maintaining one 'scene' in OBS then it's irrelevant, but if you're switching between windows this forces consistent keyframes when the scene changes instead of applying what the source is using.
Video encoding and gaming at the same time is an extremely resource heavy workflow, any other applications running in the background can impact your stream. When you're live I would recommend disabling everything that can run any processes while you're live. Fan controllers, anything from NZXT or corsair, chat apps, etc. If your bandwidth limited or pushing the limits, turn off and unplug any other devices connecting, Rokus and TVs can sap bandwidth without you even using them.
Huh? Can u make it simpler damn I just skipped this whole thing smh
@@mostassuredly The complexity is caused by environmental issues with the stream, network, or computer. If everything in the world was perfectly suited to its task then everything would be simpler. 1080p60@8mbps with a 1s keyframe and ideal network conditions is what you really want to stream with.
For collabs I use discord. Is that extremely taxing on stream lag or can I use that?
@@IjuuinCh If you're video streaming with friends that could tax your network and CPU. It'd be good to run some tests and see what CPU usage OBS is reporting at the bottom of the screen and look out for dropped frames. If your CPU is running high (80%+) try to eliminate any unnecessary background programs. For dropped frames it's probably network. Discord runs a pretty light setup so as long as your machine is dedicated to just the stream and what you're doing, and you have enough power you 'should' be fine, but networks can be random and slower during some hours of the day too, so it might not just be your machine.
@@urmomlovesit Hello can I ask some advice? this is my pc

Hi. Im starting streamer and i was watching many tips and videos for better stream. You are not that guy who say: go here, click at this and you got it. You are that man who is sympatic and very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the tip. I tried the resolution size change and it is 10 times so much better. Thanks
This is so much better now. I play rust at 80fps but it was choppy, thanks to your settings, the quality is a little worse and looks like someone threw sand at my monitor, but still good quality, and much better frame output, thanks
i love you man i just ran obs studio as administrator and it worked
Thank you very much.
I have changed my settings and the my video recording goes very well.
1. Encoder: from x264 to NVENC
-in past, task manager shows that my GPU works lesser than CPU. But I still choose CPU.
-the performance went well. But the video lags a lot.
2. A little settings:
-keyframe: from 0 to 2, the recorded video went smoother than the past.
bro you are awesome your esay to understand and straight to the point good shit

Not gonna lie, I didn't think I was going to learn anything, but the way you broke down gpu vs cpu running the stream finally clicked for me. Thank you. Great vid man! Tweaked my setting, raised my bitrate, and now have a crystal clear strea..
