I have the both the SL20SH and the SL30SH. I love the reels they are great for any situation or setup. I use them for long distance casting on the surf and trolling for large inshore fish on my boat.
The casting benefits are that they are simple and have a great retrieve rate. With either reel on a 13'3" daiwa ballistic tournament, I can hold heavier braided line and still reach 180 to 200 meter when power casting in the surf with an 8 to 12 ounce weight bait combo. For trolling, I can easily land 40+ inch stripers while the boat is still moving forward. They have a good drag range, and with the right rod, they are perfect for any situation. The biggest benefit is the price of the reels. They are not a low-budget reel, but the simplicity of the design gives you great performance for a reasonable price.

I handed my slosh 20 to my brother over 20 years ago, as I was using my 7HT reels more on the beach. He used it quite a lot over the following years without any issues, and he recently handed it back to me because he can no longer fish properly due to a pysical condition he now has.
That reel is still like new, and a joy to behold, so now I have plans to at last use it again myself.
When I first bought the reel, I had plans to get a slosh 30 along with it too, but I instead chose the Slosh 50 (I was about to embark on a wrecking trip and wanted a beefy outfit), which in hindsight was a bit overkill; love that big ol' slosh though.
Agreed, all these Daiwa reels from the 7HT to the Slosh 50 are well built and very reliable. The old Sealine range too

I've owned those same reels for over 20 years. I wash them off with Salt-Away after every trip. They still look and operate like brand new. The old school gear is just very durable. I'm in Southern California by the way. Have tuna up to 45 pounds, Yellowtail, mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), plenty of other fish.

After nearly 25 yrs away from sea boat fishing, I've recently aquired a lovely little Shetland Family 4 which is moored in Strangford Lough NI. I was and still am a coarse/match angler and have always loved Daiwa stuff. So....decided to buy the Slosh 30 for a 12/20lb outfit. First outing coming shortly when it arrives.....keep you posted and keep up the good work mate. Learning loads from your vids on boating and sea angling after being out of it for so long 👍

Hi John, I sure someone has probably mentioned it by now but if you check the gear box of the reel that does not have the stamp on the reel foot it will most like say Japan on it. These were the original ones and are considered better quality. My father has one about 20 or more years and is still smooth as anything and Japan engraved on the gearbox

been fishing now for 40 years, i have to say the slosh 20 and 30 are brilliant reliable reels. i have three akios shuttle reels and a Penn 525 mag4 and a Penn fathom 15. but i have to say, you can spend loads of money on reels as i have but ? i do not think that you will go wrong with a slosh.. it will be interesting to see if in years to come the modern reels will still be going strong like the slosh reels. in my opinion one of the best reels ever made.

Really enjoyed your review. Yes the Daiwa SL range is excellent. Perhaps I have limited reference, but switching from a Penn 500 20 years ago felt like I had upgraded my VW Beetle to a S-series BMW. I've always been into rock and surf, so distance casting is pretty important to me. With the Penn 500, I frequently had to discard 100 m or more of new line when an overrun resulted in the line getting caught between frame and spool. With the SL50 and 30, this just did not happen. I think it's the one-piece frame that makes all the difference. Everything just fits together more precisely. Then the frequency of those dreaded overruns decreased quite radically too as in free mode the spool spins so smoothly. My overrun problem disappeared almost completely. Perhaps not ideal for the BIG stuff, but it handled my best catch of 18kg with ease...

    Cheers. Good straight forward video.
I'm just getting back into fishing more often again.
    I have a silver 6500c3 & green 6500 mag elite.
They're both years old but in fantastic condition.
I always rinse /dry / occasionally oil etc.
Thing is I'm looking for something for rough ground, that can take knocks & has fast retrieval..
I remember the slosh coming out.
    Glad they still make them.
    I'll be buying one shortly.
Last Daiwa multiplier I had was a ProCaster back in the 80's.
    Awesome reel.

I agree with almost everything you say buddy, Slosh series are a fantastic value for money bomb proof reel. I used them for years the only negative point for me if used reel up when casting the large downward facing gear box would uncomfortably foul on my knuckle especially with the 20 size being narrower. Other than that great reels.
Great vids by the way !

Love it . I've two Slosh 30's, they are brilliant reels, simple as you said, and reliable. They're not in my opinion , out and put casting reels, but with the spool slackened off so there's just a little end float, I can bang a 5 oz lead well over a hundred yards, just thumbing it enough (not always successfully), to prevent bird nesting. Great video.

Daiwa brand is always reliable. I used to have Daiwa Baitrunner reels for 5-6 years. I had not a single problem with them. As I moved here in Wales for a while, I'm going to get these multiplier reels and practice casting with them as I'm not used to and birdnests are really nasty and time-consuming.

I also have a pair of 30's. my tip is if the drag needs to be replaced, fit a carbontex drag washer kit. they are brilliant. also for extra smoothness, there is a plastic bush under the spool adjuster. replace it with a SS ball bearing. on the early 20's they only had 3 bearings. on the bottom of the main gear shaft there is a plastic bush. Again replace it with a SS ball bearing and the other bearing. the extra bearing/s make the reel a lot smoother

Good review, I actually use the gx2 boat roads with these reels also, have the 12-20lb and the 30lb rod.
I've had a slosh 20 for years but it seized on me whilst reeling a fish in. So looking to get two new slosh 30's and then going to take the 20 apart and see what's gone on with it.
The reel was sounding rough for a while to be fair.. my fault for not investigating before it failed 😬

Correct me if i'm wrong here mate but is there not a couple of models above them nowadays? I'm sure Daiwa make the SLX 20SHA and the SLX 30SHA models which are more suited for when the fishing gets heavier. I used both the slosh 20 and 30 for years and I would only ever bench them for a Penn 535. I live in Northumberland and a lot of the rock marks up our way are brutal, the Daiwa slosh is a true work horse that as you've shown in this video can stand the test of time with a bit of TLC. Good video as always mate!

I will probably never understand why a right handed spinning reel cranks on the left side, BUT a conventional is reversed. Which of course is why some of us buy left hand conventionals so that both our spinners and conventionals crank on the same side.

Didn't like the 20 version much prefure 30. Has more line capacity for fishing rough ground and if you snag and lose line still plenty to keep fishing. 20 cast better but lose a chunk of line and not enuf left on. But I am using 30 lb no leader with rotten bottom of very snaggy ground. But I have now started using penn fathom 2 casting special. Casts a little better and drag little nicer but it's twice the cost for few extra mtr. But 30 still gets used just not as much now.
