The Non-Artist Guide to Re-Paint Your Fallout 4 Pip-Boy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- I tried to come up with the easiest way to make your plastic-toy-looking Pip-Boy look like a real weathered, rusted, dusty retro future device. I really think anyone can follow along and do this.

as a prop builder i straight up ty for the pepper trick, never thought of that, gives a very nice effect, lots of ground pep looks like nice old rust.
"look ma, a bearded super saiyan who does a great re-paint job on pip-boy"
This has to be the best Pip-Boy repaint on UA-cam. The pepper technique is simply inspired. I'll be referring to this for my Spirit Halloween Pip-Boy repaint.
I like how you slide in the Bob Ross reference, "happy accidents".... Great channel, great video!
This is the best paint job I've seen so far. VERY game accurate weathering. Others are sooo over the top they look almost like something from Borderlands. Yours is sooo spot on. Thanks for making such a good tutorial!
not painted any model's for over 10 years but this has inspired to get painting again :). fantastic job can't wait to get started on my pipboy
I've always been afraid to do this to mine since it's limited edition, but after watching this video I'm pretty confident I can do it now.
2 years later i finished the flipbook as he said to watch it over and over!
Awesome job, Josh!
Not bad man. I've won more than a couple of model contests doing these exact same techniques on my miniatures. Keep it up!
I love this! The box and the Pip-Boy look much better with the authentic Wasteland wear to them. Automatron DLC next week, woo! :D
Dude. that was awesome. Thanks so much for your efforts - my son and I did the case yesterday and now we're starting on the pipboy.
This is really cool. This is part of what got me into wanting to do clay modeling. Making video game characters and stuff.
I'm glad you noted the Firefly reference. It's exactly what I thought of when you Browncoat.
Fantastic video! I've been working on a Fallout costume for weeks, but I withheld including a Pip-Boy exactly because the special edition model is so glossy and new-looking. Seeing this, I'm sure I can give one the grit and grunge it needs. Thanks for the inspiration!
didn't realize how long the video was until I had finished it. Really really nice though. probably gonna do the same to mine. after seeing this, the shiny plastic just looks so syndicated
30 minutes in, I realized how long this video is O_o. So good!!
Needs more attention its a underrated nasterpeice 👌👌👌
I really wish I could've gotten these limited pip boys, I love how real you made it look!
Thanks so much for this video I followed everything you said and my pip boy and crate turned out amazing, it is so true what you said about it tells a story as you paint it. Thanks again here from Australia, love your work.
hey Josh! I'm both a miniature painter and a Fallout 4 modder. subscribed!
Woah it looks epic
This was a great project. Love to see more.
I honestly don’t like the weathered look most people do on their pip-boys, and don’t plan on doing it to mine, but I definitely will go over it with steel wool to remove that cheep looking shine. It looks really cool! Just not my style
Mine turned out great! Thanks!
You are a huge inspiration and I really love your work. You do that kind of artwork I've been wanting too do for years, but only had the chance to do now. I have no experience, but watching your channel is really helpfull. So thank you very much giving me chance to evevole.
I can't wait to start mine. thanks for this video man, it's awesome!
I really love the Video tutorials! I doubted a lot at first too paint my 100 euro pipboy edition...but I copied you're style on the box first. And it came out great, I'm gonna go on with the pipboy..very happy with the patience you teach which techniques too use thanx alott
Wow that looks sooooo much better than the normal one. Now I want to buy the pipboy edition, just to do this lmao
I just watched another one of your vids, very meticulous and you pay attention to details - you do fine work!!! keep it up.
This was awesome man. I can't wait to get started.
So glad you have a UA-cam channel! I was watching you on Guest Play with Dan and I absolutely love your input and explanations of game/environmental design. Subscribed, liked, and idolized all in one go! I love videos like this, so please continue!
Thank you for making this!
that's a fine collection of crafting materials Josh. Could make a few caps with Duct Tape! Joking aside. Another great video. Hope your enjoying Fallout 4.
Thanks so much for this video. This is my first painting project and you made it pretty easy to understand and follow. It was also fun. One of the first crafting things I've done that was great on the first try and didn't make me want to throw something across the room :) Your format is great, really enjoyed it. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback. I'm really glad this worked out for you!
Nice work. Do more!
Fantastic paint guide. I wasn't going to go with as much rust as you, but after seeing yours, good lord I think I might.
Remember to quicksave before painting or modifying your Robco PIP-Boy! These are expensive, newer variants of the PIP-Boy, and are limited to one per person. Only those who have signed up for the Vault-tec societal preservation program (the vaults) are authorized to own these irreplaceable devices, and will not be given new units if one happens to break.
Same so good
this is beautiful
Fantastic video really helpful, just picked one of these up cheap and i bought an extra empty box for £1 plus shipping so i'm going to practice with that :) A+ thanks for the vid
just wanted to say that I loved this video. it was precisely what i needed. i follow your instructions and it looks shitty! and it should, it's been sitting under rubble for 8 decades. it looks absolutely in terrible condition. So thanks!
Love your hairstyle!
Great Video man!
May attempt this later
Friggin awesome!
good stuff, keep it up Josh.
Just what I was looking for!
Love this bro))
before this I really just got done dirt and put it on there thank you so much I did exactly way you did except I made it so the PIP-BOY had slash marks on it
I am gonna be tryin this.
Hey I like this. Do more of this lol starting mine this weekend
This is awesome! I need to paint a 3d printed pipboy and I'm gonna use everything from this video. I just gotta figure out the base color. Nervous...
Definitely using this video to help :) thanks bro
Great work!
the urge to paint mine is real. but I just got it so I wanna keep it as is for a while or atleast wait till I get another one
Hey, I like this and I want to see more of it.
this was awesome! subscribed and shared!
+aquapunkchick You're the BEST!
I would suggest suggesting people hit the pipboy with a matte varnish personally, just because of how easily the acrylic will rub off if it isn't a purely display piece.
The artist in me is screaming for pigments and airbrushing techniques, but is also heavily incited to get out of bed already and start a couple of stalled painting projects I have going before I have to be a functioning adult for the day.
Plus one sub broski, your art is AMAZING!!
can I just sand down the pip-boy or will it just look scratched without paint? I don't want to paint it but it looks cheap when its glossy.
You can rub it down with steel wool and it will knock the gloss down without leaving visible scratches.
this is so cool
this is so amazing thanks for the tutorial! i would totally do this if i could afford the pip boy edition XD
Great job! keep them coming! Is there any cool projects you could do with a Revenant symbol?
Saw this on reddit. This is a really nice video! I do a lot of artistie stuff and this didn't even occured to me. You just earned a sub from me. :) I'm working on a tutorial YT series atm.
Do I need purified water for this project, or is any water I find in Commonwealth fine?

And supplies you need are far south where alot of Deathclaws live
Bethesda please hire this guy.
Why would they do that?
Awesome!
This is super rad. I'll be using a mix of your and Bill Doran's (Punsihed Props) techniques on mine!
+8-Bit Chef Sweet. Hope to see it! Bill's tutorial was crazy awesome. (and must have taken foreeeeeever!)
For sure, I'll post a link when it's done.
Thanks for the detailed tutorial!
+Josh Foreman I finished weathering the case, I've never tried weathering anything before, that being said I'm happy with the results:

+8-Bit Chef Great job! It' looks beautiful!
Josh Foreman Thank you, honored to have your approval!
personally i wouldve gone light on the weathering since it was in the vault most of its life, but heavy rust, other than that these repaint vids have been making me want to do it to mine -3-

If only Bethesda sold these on their own... I would love to have one and do this to it.
“Weathering really tells a story” Yes, a story about how I watched a video at 12 in the morning of a guy chipping his fallout pip-boy box and when I tried to recreate it by making it seem like it was caught in the nuclear explosion, I blew up my entire city. Help
I like this. Please make more of this.
Did I do the thing right? :D
You should turn this in to a whole service were people send you their pip boy and you paint it for them for money xD
love this vids :p , keep it up .
Great vid but I think what they were trying to do is make you feel like you just got your pip boy before war so when you have it on when first playing the game it's all nice then you get to war time
Hey! I was wondering, do you think a similar technique would work if used for bloodsplatter on a cosplay prop (pepper included)?
+Morgan I've never tried that, but I don't see why not. Just make sure you use a fairly dark red. Biggest mistake is to spatter cherry red on stuff.
Got it. Thank you very much!
That was cool I subbed
and liked
Love this vids , keep it up :p .
Sub & Respect earned! cant wait to start this on mine. hope I can do it right lol
Sorry for comment spam but you should make this your featured video the channel. The screeech one is funny but I don't think it reflects the kind of awesome content you also have like this. :) Just my two cents.
+SynPlay Thanks. I didn't know that one was featured. I guess I had it set so the latest would automatically be featured, which I don't want. So thanks for the heads up.
Yeah. Picking a good quality video or making a trailer talking about what you do is best. :) Again, great video. I'm showing it to my fiancee right now though we probably won't do anything to our pip-boys. We aren't as awesome as you.
I'd like to mod my Pipboy but just not make it look like a plastic toy. Should I sand off the the glossy layer and put a matte clear coat on it? Would that help?
That'll do it!
You may not even need the matte coat. Up to you.
"Fresh from the compa- HOLY JESUS THIS PIP BOY IS RUSTED AS HELL"
Do you have any suggestions for making the pipboy and case look new but without the cheap plastic look?
+Dylan DeVol The best way to do that is just the steel wool to take away the shine. You'll probably want to get some very fine sanding sponges to make the finish as nice as possible.
+Josh Foreman Will sand paper be an appropriate replacement?
+Whovian1899 It would need to be very fine sandpaper. Like 800-1200 grit. And it would be better to use sponges/pads because you'll get fewer scratches.

+Josh Foreman Ok I'll definitely look for the Steel Wool. Thanks for replying. You did such an amazing job with the props in this video. I especially love the detail on the box. Congrats. You got a new sub. 👍
i like how he says the pipboy wont be as weathered as the box and then the pip boy is like twice as beaten up and grimey as the box.....
It's not supposed too be the one in the game, it's supposed too be the one you would get in the Vault
doing this
HOW MENY DO YOU HAVE
I'm an artist but I'd be fucking terrified lol
nic work :D
Hey Josh!
What material do you use for your sculptures, is it clay, or something else?
+8-Bit Chef, I mostly sculpt with Super Sculpey Firm and Apoxie Sculpt. I've got a Sculpey 101 series coming up soon, so stay tuned!
Josh Foreman Awesome, I have a bunch of Super Sculpey lying around, cool to know I'll soon have inspiration on how to use it.
Anybody doing the flip-book thing?
PAINTERS TAPE. GIMME THAT ADHESIVE!"!!!
I'm to scared to try it on mine.
looks good but not something I would do
Now it looks older
refence images?
Only 800 likes / 2 years? 😭
Help me get more by sharing! :)
Boo on the person who disliked. D: Wasn't me.
dat hair tho
thye story you are trying to tell is that you got a file and messed up your box
Ten bucks ain't bad, but when you've just spent $150 on the thing itself...
