  • Life gain is a mechanic as old as magic the gathering and yet has manage to grow and evolve with this great game. In this video I will go through the history of life gain in mtg, from its humble origins into what it is now. From there we will expand on the flavor of life gain as dictated by the color pie. Lifegain in magic the gathering is a true expression of how each mtg color imprints itself on the mechanic and is one of my favorites. So join me in expanding the mechanical color pie of Magic: the Gathering

So what is your favorite life-gain card, or card that combo's off of it?

@karlgrylls2406 I would say it's in a good spot. It's not quite front and center and is continuously added to. I prefer it in that state as it keeps it special

@@DiceTry that's an interesting answer. I think you are right. However i do think lifegain is underrated. It might not win you the game but it does protect you from losing it. Kenrith did that for me countless times. So I would say during deckbuilding players should put a lifegain mechanic in the deck

Funny enough. When my friends first got me into Commander my first commander was Trostani and it was Turbo Fog Life gain. I have refined that deck to a T and I still love it to this day. I have gotten to points where I have 100,000s of life but sadly I will still die to 21 commander damage. But still a blast to see how high I can get my life total.

You are probably the most thoughtful, unique and interesting mtg creator out there. The depth of your content is so much more than what anyone would expect, even with high hopes. You go beyond with absolutely amazing content that gets into the mind of magic the gathering as an entity. You really have an unmatched thing going on here that I don't think anyone could replace. The music, transitions, references, tempo of topics...everything.

My favourite mechanic thus far. I play a Killian deck filled with lifelink creatures and enchantment cards such as Polluted Bonds and Sanguine Bond. I never thought I'd play lifegain to be honest. Back when I started getting into Magic in 2020, I saw life gain as something that is very technical and hard to pull off and while it still can be, I find it actually being more fun than what I initially thought of it. Glad to be proven wrong 😊

    Nice breakdown and exploration.
From a mechanical and flavour perspective i have a problem with white creatures( excluding vampires) having Lifelink. In practice lifelink is also draining life from others, being them creatures or opponents and that doesnt connect well with White´s values.
It is intersting to note that other card games have noted the above and corrected it.
Legends of runeterra take on life is interesting: players simply cannot go pass their starting LP. This greatly helps games END since aggro decks are never so far from swinging for letal as in mtg.

Once played a game vs my little step brother, we both had nearly identical Nobilis of War red/white decks, we basically just took turn swinging at each other and gaining over 100 life each turn. It last over an hour of actually trying beat each other. In the end I think it was a sneaky double strike instant, which of course as the bottom of the deck, that finally made the difference.

Lifegain is a mechanic that I have seen put on the whipping post on MTG threads of reddit because of it apparrent lack of wincons. To me this strange between the soul sisters, marauding blight priest, epicure of blood, Dina Soul Steeper, Elas-Il Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim, and Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn off of life triggers alone. When you add Blood Researcher, Celestial Unicorn, and Hallowed Priest into the mix, it can get out of hand very quickly.
While Exquisite Blood is a good combo piece, it is $50 by itself, which is not great at $50-$100 decks which most people are comfortable with making, what with other hobbies and responsibilities (rent, groceries, car payment, even student loans) naturally taking precedence over $200 deck building. Thankfully, lifegain can be among the most budget friendly archetypes to build, depending on your wincons.

Are Food tokens worth a mention? It is a lot of where I think it fits into Green as an artifact, even when Green doesn't have much artifacts otherwise.
Maybe I don't have the longest history, but it has felt with the last few sets there has been a lot done with Food, which it's basic trait is lifegain.

Personally I think that, in a fight, Blacks lifegain is the most effective. In a fight to the death, you want to eliminate the opponent as fast as possible, while lasting as long as possible.

I wouldn't call black the enemy of either green or white. Every color has its own philosophies, but they don't need to conflict or work together in all circumstances. For example, black can be used as the means to return things to nature, or as the end goal, with power being the purpose of white's order.

That's why he says all colors have a unique view that gives "flavor" to the same thing.
In my opinion, all colors are allies and enemies.
Nature isn't against Death nor against Life.
Death isn't an enemy of Nature.
      Death is part of Nature.
Death is one of the "gears" that make the "mechanism" works properly and keeps the "mechanism" working.
Death and the other "gears" add balance and eternity to something that is too complex to be defined with a single word, but, let's call it Laws of Nature, Laws of Reality.
Balance requieres finding a way of dealing with eternal conflicts between elements of reality.
Green isn't only Life as a state of being of an individual.
Green is also Life as the state of being of a specie.
Green is also Life as a eternal appearance of species, specie changes and species extinctions.
That's why Green is Life, Nature, Balance, Realism and Acceptance...and Death and Ambition and many other things that other Colors are and other things that other Colors aren't.
