Nothing wrong with disliking the nerd, but he was never really dishonest. Whole thing started as a joke about rage gamers with his friends, and ballooned from there.
He enjoys doing the series and enjoys games, but he's playing a character and is pretty much just a normie dad these days when it comes to modern gaming.
Same with Board James, which is also it's own character.
His movie stuff is pretty much him at his most pure, and you can really tell how much he loves film.
That said, I'm pretty biased, I pretty much grew up with his stuff. All of it, not just the Nerd. I also watched his amatuer films and such.
Hard to explain without sounding like a shill or overly paranoid, but dude just seems all around chill and that makes it really easy for me to enjoy most things he puts out.
Also, Gamecube was massively underrated in its day.
It had some very fun games on it. More a fan of the ps2 controller, but I love Luigi's Mansion, Tales of Symphonia, Resi 4, and Mario Sunshine.
Just the fact alone that he actually amassed such a physical collection of video games & movies, in a variety of different formats/for different systems, speaks to his love of the hobby. James Rolfe may have been playing a character, but he was actually playing some games too. Cinemassacre is definitely part of my formative years though!
So true. I loved his videos as AVGN, but I'd also watch a ton of the stuff he had up on cinemassacre and you could really tell how much he loves film and that was a selling point for me. AVGN was funny and all but it eventually got to the point where I got more excited for Monster Madness each year than I did for new Nerd videos.
Another thing I respect about him is that he never starts drama. No politics, no religion, no controversial subjects of any kind. Just reviewing shitty games and having fun while doing so. He also takes criticism fairly well, when people told him he was getting stale, he switched up the way he was working on his series. A respectable man, no doubt in my mind.
The Nerd is a beast.

I liked the GameCube It was compact and the discs where smaller which I thought was cool and of course it's loading screen was great. Biggest problem I had with it was storage space.
It was the perfect size for long road trips. When my family got a van with a dvd player, it had composite in, and we would play gamecube games on the way to wherever we were going.
TRUEING, first game I had with the GC was animal crossing, and the file size took up 98% of the regular memory card storage 😂 had to buy a 256 black for all my other game saves

So I'm curious where does the "James doesn't like video games" thing come from. He's clearly competent at some older games and has fond memories of them. I get film was always his number one passion but Pippa always talks like he just literally doens't like video games a single bit
I was a decent fan of AVGN for a while too, and Nostalgia Critic had a couple of good videos I liked to watch every now and then like his Battlefield Earth and Garbage Pail Kids reviews, but aside from that I didn't watch Nostalgia Critic that much. I do remember watching the video on your stream of when Doug quit his job and how cringe that was though.
The best part about this is that the controller was a knockoff, lol.
And, despite being a shitty knockoff, it still took him so much effort to break it with a hammer.
I remember going on a bootleg AVGN spree and came across this and a multitude of other cursed stuff. Very strange rabbit hole to go down to, and all I did was dip my toes in it.
I don’t know how this guy can complain about a game being slow, that just means the game is giving his brain time to load.
sadly his brain has already succumb to the dreaded red ring of death.

I didn't have a GC growing up, I was a PS2 kid because my parents thought it was a better economic decision to buy a console that could play the old games and the new ones. However, when I got into college, I found a GC for like 90 bucks with 2 controllers and Melee. I really enjoyed that and Mario Golf. The only other game I got for it was Bloody Roar, but i really didn't like playing it on the GC controller. Mario Golf was always a good time though. I don't know why of all the Mario spin-offs I like golf the most, but it is my favorite GC game I own.
Toadstool tour is fuckin awesome.
The GC era Mario spinoffs are all great, TBH. Mario Kart Double Dash and Luigi's Mansion are right up there with Toadstool Tour.

Is there more to the story involving being upset with AVGN? I always thought he was pretty up front that his interest for games was predominately toward *old* games and that Mike was the one that would bring stuff to his attention if it was newer (you’d see this a lot in James and Mike Mondays). James has always been into film first, so while the stuff he focuses on now isn’t really in my wheelhouse I don’t feel like he somehow ‘betrayed’ me or anything.

I must have missed the lore on this AVGN knockoff who supposedly killed a bunch of people. Anyone know who she's referring to? Only person who comes to mind is that Mr. Anime guy but he wasn't really a video game reviewer.
I think the old AVGN episodes aged pretty darn well (except the small amount that weren't ever that great), and the actual behind-the-scenes story of James is a lot more complicated but at this point I'd rather just pretend that it isn't, like everyone else does, and free up a bunch of my mental real estate.
For me, never was big on Nostalgia Critic but I really did enjoy AVGN. I feel that his newer stuff though is pretty meh in comparison to the older reviews, I think due to his age and just the more cookie-cutter, formulaic feel since Cinemassacre got bought out and he isn't the prime dude behind everything now. As for the Gamecube, love it and always will. I love that gen as a whole, as all the systems offered something different and all have some pretty great exclusives.
This was a fun little trip back to a time of 240-360p content on YT where it was cool to destroy one's possessions on camera lol xD

You're absolutely correct however morons at the time complained how it didn't have mature games with "gritty realistic" graphics (i.e. everything a different shade of brown) like COD or Battlefield and that they only had colorful "kiddy games" not realizing that said games would go on to become beloved classics while all their "modern" military shooters would end up becoming rather dated products of their time.
There were only two games on the lamecube worth playing. RE4 and Eternal Darkness.
