This video is a detailed description of Shishi Gashira Sasanqua Camellia. Shishi is a lower growing Sasanqua Camellia. It is a very popular variety, because it can be used as a foundation plant without outgrowing the space. Shishi blooms in the fall and early winter with beautiful pink flowers with yellow centers.

Just planted 6 last week and they are absolutely beautiful evergreen plants. Rich dark green leaves contrast with lipstick pink rose bud flowers. Definitely brightened up the shade garden for sure! I used Bio-Tone and lightly mulched them in.
I just bought one and it arrived in the mail today! I’m sooo excited I just had to tell you!!!
Jim- I apologize, I don’t see your links with planting information in clay soils. I don’t worry some of mine might be planted a bit too low. I’d like to watch your video for information, but also curious if I feel like a couple have been planted too low, is there a way to dig them up and replant? Some were planted 3-ish years ago and a couple were recently planted.
Bought a number of shishi gashiras last summer, unfortunately from 3 different vendors. The colors among the plants from the different vendors are a bit different & it looks like there is a shoot that is a Yuletide camellia (perhaps it was the root stock?). I've mass-planted mine in the front of my house. Will try to post a picture when they bloom in the fall. Even though they haven't yet filled in, the show was impressive last year. I think these plants are ideally suited for mass-planting.
I do have a question for Jim -- Given that these camellias bloom in the Fall, why is it recommended that they be fertilized in the Spring?
Jim, when is the best time to transplant in 7b?
Thinking of putting this under my windows near a corner. I have 4 1/2’ under the window and about 5’ under the corner - could this be pruned to no stay in from the corner, or could it be guided to “wrap around” the corner you think?
Jim,
I love your videos on UA-cam for thoroughness, pleasantness and of course your expertise delivered with simplicity. Quick question if I may - I have low windows about 3.5 feet high from ground in front of my house which get morning sun only. Should I go for Shi shi gashira OR October magic Ruby camellia?
Our She She plants are growing a marble ball , very round and green. Is this normal?
How close can October Magic Shishi Gashira camellias be planted from a slab foundation? I am worried that our landscape designer and crew put them too close (within 2 ft).
i knew you would have a great video on this one...you look freezing in this video though! :)
Can Shi Shi be kept to 2.5’ to 3’ high if pruned yearly after blooming?
New plant to me.
can these be grown from seeds?
Can I plant my camellia a NE garden area? 4:54
Mine were planned last spring they have a yellow look not green is this bad
Can Shi Shi be grown in a container, or is it better to plant in ground? Looooove your vids, Jim💞
It's a great container choice that can't freeze solid. So be prepared to move or cover.
HortTube with Jim Putnam Thank you❣️
Jim,
Will the Shishi Gashira grow under a southern magnolia? Mostly shade, maybe up to three hours of sun in the morning.
If not, what would you recommend for such location?
+Guillermo Rincon Honestly, nothing competes well with a Magnolia. It's everyone's problem who has one. You could try elevating the Camellias above the Magnolia roots
Thumbs down for inaccuracies as to heighth. Last I checked mine are about 30 (thirty) FEET tall towering over the house here in Southern California USA. Probably about 20 years old (I planted it, I know I received it as a Christmas gift one year, and yes it is Shishigashira. The flowers look exactly like in the books)
I planted my shushing sasanquas twenty years ago and they are 36” tall.
I don’t prune them. I have about 10 and they are beautiful. I live in Charleston SC.
Perhaps you have Japonicas. They can grow very tall.
You have the wrong species.
I don't understand why people ask question to this guy when he never answer.
