This whole "BBC/Tory" debate was a disgrace... Sunak must have been briefed on the questions beforehand. He constantly interupted Starmer. The host interrupted Starmer repeatedly. Sunak was allowed to rant and rave like a petulant child. Complete Tory bias throughout. I posted a complant to the BBC halfway through. No doubt I'll get some stock non-answer from them soon... don't get me onto some of those "loaded" stupid questions from "the audience"!
It should come as no surprise that the questions were not known to the broadcasting hosts in these series of faux debates/slanging matches. If this was not the case it would have been impossible for them to structure the pantomime into the various categories and they would have had to know which person and their seating position in the audience to call on them. This being so then the leaders would have also known the questions and an answer would have been prepared.
Tbh I never watch these 'debates', it's all rigged in favour of the Tories.
@colinireson9339 , Agree- I know how I'll vote way before an election is called as I am fully aware of what a particular government has and has not done during their term in power. Australia has been welcoming immigrants from Britain, specifically the NHS.
How come emigration isn't a issue?
There's a massive brain drain of skilled workers from Britain leaving to look for better opportunities overseas.

You've nailed it Max ! ❤
I am afraid the current leader of the Tory party is showing us how low this man will go to justify his existence. He makes my skin crawl.
You've answered your own question Max as to why Starmer isn't talking about immigration in a positive light - look at the audience reaction to Sunak's response - they love bashing immigrants over the head, and that sentiment runs deep across vast swathes of the UK, who all voted Brexit on the SOLE premise of "stopping the immigrants". Clearly, Labour have done the calculations, that key seats they need to win are still very right wing when it comes to this issue, and they can't simply campaign for pro immigration - our ludicrous voting system is against Labour on every single metric given how boundaries are set up, so can we please all stop getting annoyed and frustrated at Labour for not being vocal/doing more on XYZ. Once they are home and dry, in office, THEN we can pile on.
All we need to say is that migrants wishing to seek asylum in the UK, is the responsibility of the UK - Not France's and not Rwanda's.
It used to be the responsibility of the first EU country they entered . Then we left the EU.
But aren't asylum seekers obliged to seek asylum in the first *safe* country they reach? France has a perfectly functioning asylum system, so why don't they seek asylum there?
@@johnrussell3961 it was never that. They have always been able to claim asylum in any country.
@@Brian-om2hh No, they are not obliged to do that.
@@Brian-om2hh . There is no such requirement in the UN convention. It was added by the EU to its Dublin Accords, then we chose to leave the EU.
The question needs to be asked as to just how the BBC are selecting audience members. At the moment, the BBC seems to be just another arm of the right-wing media.

Rishi Sunsacked will say and do anything to cling onto power, utterly shameful.
Starmer is 100% correct, people cannot be deported or granted leave to remain unless they are processed first. One of the biggest problems now is the queue of people waiting to be processed.
Something completely ignored by Sunak and the presenter allows him to ignore the question.
Could have come back to Sunak about how we failed our allies in Afghanistan when the Taliban did come back to power, and we really didn't step up to the plate then.
Someone did a deal with the Taliban so we could peacefully withdraw.

When the french had recovered theirs TWO WEEKS before the UK did! That also wasn't Starmer!
This was on the conservative broadcast company
An immegrant is not illegal until there applicantion is declined. The very application that takes years to progress due to limited resources
Waiting to be deported is a legal status. No one is illegal.
Surely any immigrant from all those three countries would be able to qualify for asylum.
And here is the paradox. Sunak was implying that the immigrants sent back (to the countries listed) would be being sent back to countries Governed by tyrannical entities (not Wrong) and yet these are the very same immigrants that Sunak has removed the ability to "properly" claim asylum.
Remember many of those that have fled Afghanistan did so because they worked with the allied forces and were promised settlement. They feared retribution if they stayed.
That promise was not honoured by the Government.
As for Iran, those fleeing cannot be sent back IF they fear for their lives, and can cite evidence. That is written in International Law.
The shame of all this is that, considering Starmer is a Barrister, he doesn't appear very "Quick on his Feet" with intelligent retorts!
Why would we need deals with all those countries to send people who came from there back? If they belonged there in the first place, that country shouldn't have any objection to one of their own citizens being returned home. If a British citizen tried to overstay illegally in Australia say, the Australians don't need a deal with Britain in order to send them home to Britain. If their origin country has revoked their citizenship and kicked them out, then they probably have a legitimate asylum claim, unless we are saying they have no right stay anywhere on Earth now. It's just a matter of processing the claims and deciding if they are valid.
I was disappointed that Kier Starker didn't retort to that statement as it certainly suggested to me that Sunak just shot himself in the foot with that rhetoric !
My immediate response would have been "Well I am certainty not sending them to Rwanda and defy human rights law , which YOU are DEFINITELY doing" . It would have been interesting to see howmany BBC audience applaud Sunak" if Starmer had responded to Sunak with that!
The applause is the reason why I don't trust the polls. I wouldn't be surprised if The Tories won.
@mikeyrepublic You can't make a judgement like that because they're a carefully selected audience who have to represent all the parties equally because of election laws. Opinion polls don't work like that.
@Poliss95 I don't trust the polls because you cannot trust the people. Applause at a bigoted ejaculation of bilge is about as honest a reaction as you will ever get from most people talking about politics.
6 more days to go.Then the adults can take over.😊
I thought the Prime Minister claimed the people on the boats were economic migrants not people fleeing dreadful regimes like Afghanistan, Syria etc. He can't have it both ways.
Aren’t those people that Sunak refers to, from those countries, seeking asylum and not merely economic migrants on his list of ‘illegals’? The logic of presenting them as automatic rejects fits with the need to deport them to Rwanda and not any factual due process. The weight of immigration under the Tories and unfit-for-purpose Department working the Rwanda proffered solution is a millstone which he wears as a medallion.
Sunak hasn't got an honest word in him.

Therefore you can stay here, no need for repatriation.

@@annejones565hear, hear, we'll said.
This exchange confused me. So Sunak was admitting that these are genuine asylum seekers who should have their applications approved and no need to deport them to Africa? I mean, they’re escaping Taliban persecution, right?
Goes to show everyone at all levels loves to conflate legitimate asylum seekers, legal immigrants (either from within or outside of the EU), and illegal immigration to suite whichever right wing agenda they’re pushing.
All the more stupid when you consider Starmer getting in trouble for using Bangladesh as an example. Which actually makes more sense. Not aware of reasons for Bangkadeshi to claim asylum. So if they enter illegally they’d be illegal immigrants. Process them quickly and send them back makes more sense than sending them to Rwanda to await processing there. Can’t see why the legal migrants of the British Bangladesh community would have a problem with this more logical stance.
Sadly, not many people in the UK do their homework on what Politicians say. Hence the debacle of what was known as Brexit.
It's sad because they don't seem to learn believing in hear say and effectively listening without hearing.
As you observe, the labour market is crying out for legal immigrants to fill the vacancies not taken by the indigenous population.
The question that nobody is asking is why won't the indigenous unemployed of this country fill those vacancies and what is any government proposing to do about it - ?
