Cheers for the video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Dinanlinson Shrinking Body Approach (google it)? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering a weird waist slimming water to lose belly fat without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got astronomical success with it.
At 8 weeks post op I was craving a salad SO bad! People told me I was crazy to have one so soon out but I knew my body wanted what it wanted and I had one! It was the BEST meal I had since surgery! Now all I crave is vegetables and I was struggling to figure out how to get them in. I am 10 weeks post op RNY now and I can hardly WAIT to start this method! I used to juice Kale and make green smoothies pre-op but stopped and went all protein protein protein after surgery...I'm so SICK of meat and cheese!
I am two months after surgery from gastric bypass I lost 70 pounds if you’re not a fish eater do you recommend a different kind of protein that’s not hard for stomach
You probably dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Adrien Everett i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
i was always told to eat protein first. i think this adds to constipation problems with wls patients. veggies first makes sense for wls patients also to be able to go to the bathroom. the fiber and roughage helps alot. so if you go regularly you can drop weight or maintain more easily.
+Eva Madrigal lots of questions, I'll address your water issues. Try herbal teas, they come in tons of different flavors and may help you transition to plain water. Also progressive dilution can be helpful
So glad I saw this. I'm about 6 months out from getting surgery, but I was finding a lot of the protein first (ends up protein only) advice was not making sense to me. This seems much more sensible and healthy
I'm 20 months post-op from VSG surgery. Sick of focussing on eating so much meat. Have been a vegetarian and vegan at times in my life. Didn't reach goal weight and the weight is creeping back up. I like your approach and will look into it further. Thanks for the hope you've given me.
Keith Ormerod Keith, if you're starting to creep back up, it's time to double down on good nutrition. If you were my patient, I would get you started immediately on my metabolic reset diet.
Dr. Weiner, I just binged watched almost all of your videos! Fantastic!!! I have tried some cooked veggies and have tried all meats in very small quantities (beef, pork, chicken and even sausage) and I am only 3 weeks out. My sleeve doesn't resist at all as long as I plan out about 4 oz of food and chew like crazy. No nausea, no pain, no vomiting. I did try ground beef but that was kind of "ugh" a little bit. I have been on no nausea or pain meds since day two after surgery! I also discontinued all my antacids because I feel I was allergic to them. My nutritionist and surgeon say that most of these foods are all off limits and want me to cut my calories to >500, nothing but protein shakes, use of artificial sweeteners like sugar free jello, etc. They tell me NO fruits and NO veggies yet!! I am so frustrated! I went ahead and introduced some of these into my day including low carb bread made with almond flour and ground flaxseed. I am making my own smoothies/protein shakes with Genepro ( I know, you don't like that), but at least I have fat free yogurt and PBfit in there instead of all the other junk. If one has no side effects from eating veggies and fruits, nuts and blueberries with no pain, gas, bloating, constipation or nausea, should I consider them "safe"? I am eating about 80-100 grams of protein,
Am 3 months out and losses 62 lbs. Now 160 at 5'2. Going to talk with my nutritionist at Cleveland Clinic about your vegetable first plan. I like the idea. Love your videos.
I’ve started adopting this vegetable first method and I feel great!! I love a big salad and have com to appreciate nuts and beans more. I love having my green smoothies in the morning and will usually spread it out through lunch. The meats and cheese are way too hard to consume at this point.
I am going to follow this info and i am sure i will drop more weight and reach my goal. thank you for your videos. i am not your patient but i appreciate you for caring about us beyond just surgery and sending people on their way lost on their journey. thank you.
Thank you for maintaining this video series. I've come back to this time and again to get re-motivated in my fight against obesity with the surgical procedures I have been blessed to receive. Just because I'm gifted to have a built-in food policeman it doesn't mean I don't have to keep struggling against eating issues. Really wish I could manage the set point smoothies and stomach the blenderized vegetables but neither my taste buds or my surgical tummy can tolerate them. Still...I really appreciate your videos to help us post-ops cope and keep going forward in our health journeys.
Are you on instagram? You might appreciate the content there too, and we'd love the engagement. @drmatthewweiner is the account. Want to see more content? Follow me on instagram @drmatthewweiner see you there!
I'm having VSG, and I've always been told that you 'need' to eat protein protein protein or my hair will fall out and I'll gain the weight back, and I'll become sick and deficient. I've just come across your videos last night and this is a breath of fresh air. I've been vegetarian in the past and I LOVE fruits and vegetables. I have read on the internet that eating fruits and vegetables after WLS was a no-no. This video has eased my mind. Having WLS is supposed to be for the health of your body, and eating all sugar free, chemical loaded, stuff I see all over the internet scared me. Thank you for these videos.
So glad I came across this video. I'm waiting to be approved soon I hope. and I had already been thinking about doing a mostly plant based diet after surgery. I wasn't sure if I'd be getting enough nutrition and protein. The way you explained it makes so much sense to me now. thank you
Since reading your book my whole family have changed their diets - immediately feeling better - with more energy and almost depleted junk food cravings. I am having RNY bypass surgery next month and was really worried about having to step backward to a protein first diet which has always failed me in the past. So thank you so much for posting this video and alleviating my anxiety about this issue.
Really wonderfull videos. I am 6,5 months post op. And I was still worrying about protein intake. I thought I wasnt having enough. But this video shows I am on right track. Because I cook vegetables with a little meat. Thats a relief. Thanks. ❤
I really like this message!! Use animal protein as a condiment. The general focus on animal protein is what has me questioning WLS. Thank you Dr Weiner!
2 years out, got to within 50 of where I want to be and held 6 months, now slowly gaining. Living on dairy and snack foods are increasing....Glad to see this and am going to be refocusing and working on adopting this thinking. I'm still down 250#, wanting to lose 75#, feeling a modicum of hope I haven't thrown away all my progress. Thanks!
Hello! I just discovered your videos from a bariatric support group that had shared one. I am 11 years out (Roux-en-Y 12/2005) and wondered if this eating strategy would be okay for me. I'm pretty sure that my bypass was the more extensive one, the one with a higher likelihood of becoming malnourished. But I could be wrong. I do take vitamins every day. But I am struggling with regain due to an injury that I still have another surgery ahead of me for for foot repair. Thank you for your videos and contribution. They are very helpful! I was given rules for the first 6 months or so, then was told to just eat whatever was tolerated, and I tolerate just about everything. Reaching out to the office/nutritionist at the practice of my surgery has not been fruitful.
Just purchased your book! Excited to read your thoughts. Have there been studies showing the success of maintaining the weight loss using the vegetable first theory/method?
Thank you SO MUCH, Dr. Weiner, everything you talk about in these videos resonates with me so much!! My question is: if I'm having a smoothie, do I need to wait 30 minutes before and after to drink my water or does it also count towards my hydration goal? Thanks again!!
This is the only video I've seen thus far into my research that actually makes me excited about the aftercare. I'm not a fan of large potions of animal protien, the thought of that being my "life saver" post opp was a deterrent for getting surgery. I now see that phase is temporary, and o can get back to fruit and veggies!
After my surgery can I use my Vitamix machine to mix of spinach tbsp of peanut butter what's coconut milk, organic protein plant-based a scoop. And I can mix it down as be as liquefied as water.
I wish my surgeon would have recommended this way of eating. Now I'm 4.5 years out and programmed protein first protein shakes etc etc. I've battled with a lot of vitamin deficiences throughout the years they never recommended fruit they focused so much on protein. Now I have to try and retrain my brain and body.
Hello Dr. Weiner. I have viewed all of your videos and I think that you are fantastic. I am having a huge dilema. I was approved for weightloss surgery by my insurance company, but now I am having second thoughts. My BMI is 35 with pre-diabetes, htn, arthritis, and severe sleep apnea and half of my family is obese with various weight related issues. I am so confused, my friends are saying," you aren't that big". I can't control my self when it comes to eating bad foods. I don't know what to do.
Too bad I live too far to have you do my surgery, loving your videos. Iam two months away from my surgery per my insurance requirements. What advice do you have for someone with head hunger- sugar addiction- issues.
+Maria Morris after the surgery, your head hunger and sugar cravings will decrease dramatically. Use this time to reset your diet to one that is free of sugar and other foods you are addicted to. Go cold turkey on these foods and don't ever go back!
This is exciting to see. I had band surgery in 2006, and four weeks ago was revised to a sleeve due to band failure. I had been following a "Nutritarian" approach to eating until my band made it impossible to eat nutrient dense foods without throwing up. Am I understanding your approach to be that by the use of beans, nuts, seeds, and veggies, we will get all of the protein we need from our food? I prefer to eat this way instead of protein first. I also do not like meat, therefore, I have been eating things just to help me along after surgery. My 12th week after revision can't get here fast enough! I will be eating this way again!
Hi Doctor, I’ve just discovered your videos as I’m researching wether surgery is right for me or not. I’m a generally healthy eater. I eat a lot of veggies and home cooked food but I also have periods of bingeing. I have been doing low carb and IF for almost 2 years and managed to lose about 20 kg but put back 5-6 kg because of lapses and holidays etc.my question is , if I already eat healthy ( mostly) why am I unable to sustain it and Lose consistently and once I have surgery won’t I have the same issue? Does that mean gaining is inevitable ? It’s so frustrating that every little slip results in immediate gain/ bloating / tummy for me. How will surgery change this?
Hello. I find your videos extremely informative as I'm preparing for VSG in October. A couple of questions: Would you suggest consuming fresh vegetable juice in the first 3 months after surgery? If so, would that juice count towards the recommended number of ounces of water to take in per day? Thanks!
SugarHips86 I forbid my patients from drinking any form of juice - it's a sugar sweetened beverage and is one of the most fattening substances on the planet. Even the fresh juice made a the health food stores is bad news. I have my patients make "set point smoothies" which are different from juice in that you are consuming the entire fruit and vegetable.
I am so happy to have found you on UA-cam! I am preparing to get the VSG at the end of March. I have been studying functional medicine, nutrition and holistic health for years. I am graduating with my BSN in October as well. I am getting my surgery at the Naval Medical Center and I am comfortable with the surgeons, but their diet methodology is so outdated. Just like it still is in nursing and med school, I guess. 17 years behind, right. My biggest caveat with surgery was that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat a high plant based diet. I know I can't be eating a bunch of raw veggies for a while, but eventually I would like a large part of my diet to be raw veggies and fruit. I was wondering how you feel about green juice with maybe one green apple to sweeten? I mainly use vitamix for smoothies, but I like fresh green juice as well. Is it just the commercial fruit juices you're concerned about? I will be using your nut butter yogurt recipe and smoothie recipe. I am so happy because I hate those premier shakes that taste like Carnation instant breakfast. I'm buying your book. I hope you'll do a recipe book too. Love your videos, thank you!!!
A strictly green juice is fine, but it cannot be sweetened at all - no carrots, beets or apples. Smoothies are much better because the fiber is not removed
This makes so much more sense to me- I see so many people going on the keto diet at about 1 year post op (or 2) because they regain a bit of weight, and they focus so much on protein. They'll share the food they eat, and I'm like, "Honey, that bacon you're eating is probably wrecking your internal organs." I've actually started on this approach, since I really don't have a problem getting my protein in (though, I'm pre-op.) I'm dropping weight, and actually finding that I'm not hungry, despite only eating 900-1000 calories. I was actually told to increase my intake (nice problem to have!) If I have a day where I don't make sure every bite is nutrient rich, I'm starving all day long, and would easily go over 2k calories if I didn't watch what how much I was eating. I'll be getting your book, since I've watched most of your videos and they have really resonated with me as far as a common sense approach to post-operative strategy. My surgery is Oct. 4th, and I am SO excited and happy to be on my way to living life to the fullest again! Thanks for the help!!
Have been using whole food plant based diet since 2 months post op with great success. Also buying organic when possible and GMO free as well. I feel great! 3 months post op 77lbs down.
I found this very interesting as I have been through having Lap Band and now 3 months ago having a revision and having the Gastric sleeve done . I have had 2 different doctors and both say eat Protein first. I miss vegetables but manage to eat a few have not tried a salad as f yet as I was told to wait 6 months till I try to eat a salad. I do mostly just eat meat and some cheeses. I di not like greens I usually have my salad with just regular lettuce mix. Not sure what other vegetables that work best ? Would love some suggestions . As for protein drinks on occasion I drink mostly just for breakfast
I'm 3 years out from a gastric sleeve. My lowest weight post-op was 164. CW is 177. I eat a VLCD, so the idea of eating a ton of fruit and starchy veg scares the poo out of me. I don't do well on high-carb diets. Thoughts?
I put all my patients on the Pound of Cure program after surgery and have not seen much weight regain in those who follow the program. The program does not encourage a ton of starchy vegetables, but does encourage lots of fruit intake. A VLCD does not sound like much fun.
Doctor. Please help me. I have tried to follow your "Pound of Cure" plan and I just had the most horrible kidney stone yesterday. (I had 2 previously back in 1993, 21 years ago but I've been OK since . . . Calcium Oxylate) WHAT am I to do; I was losing weight very satisfactorily and now I'm at a very disturbing impasse. - - - George
gjdagis Sorry to hear about the kidney stone. I have not seen this as an issue in my patients. I would recommend drinking LOTS of water and staying on the plan. We have a saying in medicine that "correlation does not prove causation" - just because you developed the kidney stone after starting the diet, doesn't mean the diet caused the stone. Your kidney stone was probably present for months before you started the diet and was passed after you increased your water intake on the MRD.
What if you are 4months out and can only eat 2oz. Of food at a time. Should one have 1oz protein and 1oz veggies per meal or have one meal of just veggies? Also I used to juice first thing in the morning but my stomach would be filled with so much gas it hurt. At 4 months I have not tried it yet. What is the best way to go about it. Thank you. New subscriber love your videos so informative binge watching as we speak😂😂😂😂
Where does a salad come into this equation? I was sleeved 3/6 but craving a nice salad...(head hunger?) but I just want to know when --which stage? I could start eating an all veggie salad? I have been following your suggestions to a "T" so far! Thanks!
Iwas told to eat my proteins first because its very important just in case you cannot eat the rest of your foods for vegetables ihave to used them in smoothies because ido not digest them anymore, my life was hell for the first 5years hospitalized over 20 times my life is pretty much destroyed and believes me ihad the best team of doctors, but ihates my teeth but loves my body can't have shrimps also since the surgery and so hard to drink water and before the surgery iloves water all day long and heard that from some friends with the same concerns, can't eat much at all .
I'm not a fan of "portion" rules. Every body is different and can tolerate different foods and different portions. Initially after surgery you need to focus on protein, fluids and vitamins but after 6-9 months (depending on your particular body cues), focus on eating nutrient dense foods like fruit, vegetables, nuts/seeds, beans, etc..
trouble getting water in. fluids in general. i drink honestly maybe one bottle of water a day. maybe. i love coffee. i drink water with artificial flavors. please help. how to get of artificial flavors and drink plain water or something more healthy in my water for flavor. i wish i could get used to lemon n water. if i go to water n lemon i need equal in it. not feeling well. pain in muscles and headaches. i believe its from not enough fluids.
Dr. Wiener, I'm 10 months post surgery. I've seem to have fallen off and feeling that I won't be able to loose what I've gained AND the remaining pounds I originally had left to loose. I've also been told recently that I'm diabetic and need to loose weight as well as having heart issues. I'm concerned about beeping healthy and have an insane schedule. What should I focus on more to get back on track and for good?
I need much more info to make an evaluation of your weight loss and whether or not you really should hope or expect to lose more weight, however, I can still answer the question of what you should do. You must focus your energy on developing good nutritional habits that will stay will you for the rest of your life. Eat tons of fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds and small amounts of meat and very little processed foods. This will address you weight loss goals and your diabetes. Also, it's very unusual for someone to be first diagnosed with diabetes 10 months after surgery - I'm assuming you've been diabetic all along, but have not had the 100% resolution that you expected.
Hello I'm having so much trouble right now I had gastric sleeve and I still have head hunger and sugar stuff especially chips how can I break this habit
Finally a Dr who understands most vsg patients like me do not like artificial protein. I struggled with those shakes. I ate mostly all Raw or natural foods since 3 weeks out. I know that sounds extreme but I have always ate fruits n vegetables all my life. Thank you Dr. Much love to you!!
I had RNY in 2002, the surgeon removed 9 feet of my intestine. What would you recommend for someone like me? Protein or veggies first? I get iron 4 infusions every 1.5 years due to low iron absorption & low ferritin. I take a lot of vitamins & supplements & my all my labs are good. I regained a lot of weight in 15 years. I need to lose at least 50 pounds.
+kimappreciateslife difficult situation, unusual to remove any intestine during a rny, let alone so much. Hard to offer any advice without more info, probably best to do a Skype consult.
Angela Bennett I recommend 50 grams per day for women and 60 grams for men. I don't believe you should go over 80/90. More importantly, I think that 50% of your protein should come from vegetable sources (beans and nuts)
+ginlyn39 not a fan of juicing, but smoothies are awesome! Juicing removes the pulp and fiber which has lots of nutrients. Vegetable only juices are okay, but still not as good as a smoothie where you eat the entire fruit or vegetable.
i love veggies and i am currently pre op and always had a problem of excessive gas with green leafy vegetables. I also sometimes do not digest it at all(arugula comes out whole) in 20 minutes. what do you recommend for this?
What about the sugar content of fruit? I dumped over an additional 1/2 cup of frozen, unsweetened strawberries (6 gm) in a smoothie. The smoothie also had 1/2 a banana (6 gm) and 1 container of Danon's light & Fit strawberry cheesecake greek yogurt (7 gm). The protein powder was 0 gm sugar, unsweetened almond milk and that's about it. 19 gm of sugar of which 12 were from fruit. My heart felt like it was going to fly out of my chest, was dizzy & confused and soooooo nauseated. I was about 2 or 3 weeks post RNY and I took my 1st dose of zofran. I wasn't even nauseated after surgery. I have eaten apples since but fruit, for the most part, is scaring me. I go by bananas at the store and look at them longingly. My head knows they are good for me but that unexpected dumping episode is right there with my head knowlege. I have not used any of my fruit flavored protein powders for the same reason even though they are 0 grams of sugar (I know you don't approve). Veggies are no problem. I'm a veggie lover and used to be able to eat my weight in veggies (my capabilities at 3 months post RNY are definitely more limited).
+Bypass to a Leaner Lynn not sure it was the fruit, it could have been the sweetener in the yogurt or that you ate it too fast. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
Thank you. I'm only 4 days post-op but looking forward to integrating your philosophy at 3 months. It makes so much sense to me. I think I've watched this video 4 or 5 times already. Thank you for sharing your experience.
How do you deal with your patients not going bald due to lack of protein? One other question, when cooking veggies don't they lose a lot of their nutrients?
+Stacy Eckel check out my video on hair loss. Sometimes cooking veggies releases nutrients, especially if it's in a soup or stew where you don't discard the liquid they are cooked in. The battle is to eat more vegetables and less potato chips, not to set the bar so high by eating only raw veggies that you set yourself up for failure.
3 years out , VSG surgery, lost 50 pounds, fell off the wagon and gained weight back.....after surgery I became low blood sugar and always feel bad, also on seizure meds....want to get back on track but not sure what to do.....can I do liquid diet while having low blood sugar? I'm always scared to diet because of this... I'm up to eating a full plate of food already and soon I will be back to my original weight if I don't change my ways :(
Low blood sugar is usually a reaction to refined carbohydrates and can often be controlled with a whole foods diet like our metabolic reset diet. This will help with your weight regain as well.
Having my op in 3 weeks, VSG and I have been reading that the raw veggies are not good or watch the fruits coz of sugar. Only emphasize on proteins. Is it safe to drink a smoothie as part of your 64oz per day from the first week? What about juicing? When is it safe to start other than 3 months out?
Faith Monicah I start my patients on smoothies as soon as a few days out, but many other surgeons are against this practice. I think that patients should listen to their operating surgeon for the first three months. Then, if everything is going well, you can adopt a program of your own if your not happy with the protein first program that many surgeons use. I discourage my patients from juicing since it removes a lot of the fiber and is often times just as fattening as a sugar sweetened beverage like soda pop or lemonade.
I’m am 4 weeks out from vsg and at week 5 i will be cleared for all foods, would it be too soon to start implementing a pound of cure ? Most of my protein so far has been purred beans cottage cheese thinly sliced turkey and a protein shake (limited to 1 a day.) and I have already been adding in soft cooked vegetables and fruits.
My team told me that we need a gram of protein for each inch of height so I need 68 grams of protein. I hate it and it doesn't make me feel better. I cannot stomach protein shakes anymore either. I've always hated artificial everything even pre-surgery. I want to eat whole and healthy but i feel like sometime with the emphasis of low-fat/no fat or additive heavy protein shakes that we are set up for failure post surgery. I liked watching this video. What do you have to say about the G of protein per inch of height?
+Mary Mattson I usually just use 50 grams for women and 60 grams for men. Remember that beans, nuts and dairy are much easier to get down compared to animal protein.
I am one year post vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Two to three times a week, my food gets stuck in my throat. I must gag myself to bring it up in order to relieve the pain. I have begun to have cardiac palpitations when the food bolus is present. Both are relieved once I bring it all up. I know this isn't healthy. My bariatric surgeon seems has not given me a solution to the problem. I've had multiple tests resulting an impression of 1). Low LES pressure with abnormal relaxation. 2)Normal peristalsis with normal complete bolus transit rate and bolus transit time. 3) Abnormal EGJ morphology suggestive of a hiatal hernia. 4) No criteria for achalasia, jackhammer esophagus or esophageal spasm. 5) Findings consistent with EGJ outflow obstruction likely from hiatal hernia and previous surgery. I have had this pain immediately after surgery while eating even very small pureed bites of food. The doctor just wants me to take PPI's but I have not experienced heart burn/indigestion. Last visit was my one year out visit and doctor seems to ignore my test results and my complaints. Now, after taking Protonix for 3 weeks, I am experiencing regurgitation into my throat and nose while sleeping. The food is undigested and causes me to cough. If I sit up, it stops. I am so frustrated and I know this is NOT right! I believe it is time for a second opinion.
+naweofiam I offer Skype consults and would be happy to discuss this in detail with you. I would also want to see an upper GI. I have helped several patients with similar complaints - it can be fixed, but it may not be easy.
Kelley Irish Yes, absolutely. I think that the diabetes community has vilified fruit and given whole grains a free pass. In my opinion, diabetics should eat as much fruit as they like and steer clear of whole grains. Perhaps this would make a good topic for a future video.
I'm looking at having vsg surgery and about to schedule a consultation. I've been vegetarian for a year and now recently vegan for ethical reasons. all the videos I see talk about animal products and protein. I'm worried I will not be able to get enough nutrient rich food within the first few months . Any tips for talking with my surgeon about this? I'm worried he won't think the surgery is a good idea when I tell him I'm vegan.. Sorry for the rambling :)
+Katiemakesfaces I'm a vegetarian and recently had VSG (2 months ago). It's absolutely possible. I get protein from shakes and bars, but also from beans, cheese, nuts, yogurt, etc. It's pretty impossible if you're a vegan, but Vegetarian is no problem.
+Katiemakesfaces I don't think you'll have a hard time getting enough protein, in fact beans, nuts and dairy tend to go down easily after surgery while animal protein can be tough. Your surgeon has likely operated on lots of vegans in the past and shouldn't have a problem.
I am under a doctor supervised diet before my sleeve surgery in September, oh my I am nervous. I have been watching all these video's of failures, help me. Oh my now I am second guessing having the surgery
After giving it deep thought I am going to go through with this, use the surgery as a tool, not a miracle. I am beginning to chew my food differently, slow and enough to get the consistency of purée, verses inhale full pieces. Have you heard of White Lake? Of course you have, I graduated from Lakeland approximately 100 years ago lol
Ugh. My nutritionist is part of a lovely team built by my surgeon but she is still telling me 20yo advice, even though she's like 30 and just increased her certifications. :(
I love your videos..I wish you were my surgeon..you seem so involved with your patients after care and that is so important!! Bless you!
+Jennifer Butler thanks!

Sister Scale-back I'm excited for you - I put all my patients on my Pound of Cure program.
I am two months after surgery from gastric bypass I lost 70 pounds if you’re not a fish eater do you recommend a different kind of protein that’s not hard for stomach
You probably dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Rene Kohen instablaster :)
Do you have an instagram? Follow me at @drmatthewweiner where you can see more content!
So glad I saw this. I'm about 6 months out from getting surgery, but I was finding a lot of the protein first (ends up protein only) advice was not making sense to me. This seems much more sensible and healthy
Are you on instagram? You might appreciate the content there too, and we'd love the engagement. @drmatthewweiner is the account.
Are you on instagram? You might appreciate the content there too, and we'd love the engagement. @drmatthewweiner is the account.
I am eating about 80-100 grams of protein,
+diane paloney keep it up and be patient. I don't recommend that patients stray from their surgeons nutritional advice for at least 3 months.

I’ve started adopting this vegetable first method and I feel great!! I love a big salad and have com to appreciate nuts and beans more. I love having my green smoothies in the morning and will usually spread it out through lunch. The meats and cheese are way too hard to consume at this point.

You're welcome, I'm glad they've helped.

Living on dairy and snack foods are increasing....Glad to see this and am going to be refocusing and working on adopting this thinking.
+Vann Fe yes, my program would be perfect for you

I am using these ingredients but I use almond butter instead. Peanut butter is known to carry mold and is a legume not a nut.
Sounds like a great shake, not sure about the mold/legume issue - not important

I wish my surgeon would have recommended this way of eating. Now I'm 4.5 years out and programmed protein first protein shakes etc etc. I've battled with a lot of vitamin deficiences throughout the years they never recommended fruit they focused so much on protein. Now I have to try and retrain my brain and body.

+Cyndy 40 Big fan of the nutritarian approach, but encourage my early post op patients (first year or two) to add yogurt.

Do you recommend the 'green powders' to supplement with in the first 3 months?

Thanks for your kind words! Good Luck!

Thank you os much, doctor. You are such an inspiration! :)

This works I'm 7 months out I can eat more I've added Brussels sprouts asparagus snap peas this is a great plan
I would eat frequently and focus on protein until you can reliably get 50 grams per day. Once you can do this comfortably, add the veggies in.

Where does a salad come into this equation? I was sleeved 3/6 but craving a nice salad...(head hunger?) but I just want to know when --which stage? I could start eating an all veggie salad? I have been following your suggestions to a "T" so far! Thanks!
Some surgeons are quick to put patients back on salads, others take it slower. This is a question for your surgeon.

If veggies and beans and fruit, do we need to try to stick to the 4 ounce rule? Of just eat until satisfied?

Dr Weiner..how much protein do you suggest a day? I'm 1 yr out.and am at 274 lbs
Angela Bennett I recommend 50 grams per day for women and 60 grams for men. I don't believe you should go over 80/90. More importantly, I think that 50% of your protein should come from vegetable sources (beans and nuts)

Dr. Weiner, what are your thoughts on juicing after surgery to get the phytonutrients when you are having difficulty chewing and eating much food?
+ginlyn39 not a fan of juicing, but smoothies are awesome! Juicing removes the pulp and fiber which has lots of nutrients. Vegetable only juices are okay, but still not as good as a smoothie where you eat the entire fruit or vegetable.

How are you doing now? What I could tolerate increased over time after surgery but I know everyone is different. I hope things are better

Thank you Dr. Weiner. I will attempt to contact you through your office or website. It another method of contact is preferred. Please advise me.

how soon after surgery can I use the green shake instead of packaged protein shake?
+Kim Renee Johnson this is a question best directed toward your surgeon. We have different approaches and do the surgery slightly differently.

What do you think of a keto or a low carb paleo diet after gastric bypass?
Not my first choice - I prefer a nutrient diet based predominately on plants

Hello i would like to know after how many months of a vsg do you recommend eating meat?
+Valeria Garcia it varies from patient to patient. If you're taking about steak, at least 3 months, fish and chicken are usually okay after a month

If the surgery has taken away my diabetes-do I dare try fruit when I am 3 months out?
Kelley Irish Yes, absolutely. I think that the diabetes community has vilified fruit and given whole grains a free pass. In my opinion, diabetics should eat as much fruit as they like and steer clear of whole grains. Perhaps this would make a good topic for a future video.

I had my surgery 16 years ago. I had ryn. Can I do the veggie first instead of protein first approach?

Thank you so much for the feedback!

Dr Mathew Weiner so what would you eat in a day then for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
I put all my patients on my Pound of Cure eating plan (Available online)

When you say vegetables does this include fruit? Is fruit also a pound of cure?
Nope, just vegetables. You can eat as much fruit as you like though, it just doesn't count to your pound.

What about the insatiable urge to eat constantly between meals

I am under a doctor supervised diet before my sleeve surgery in September, oh my I am nervous. I have been watching all these video's of failures, help me. Oh my now I am second guessing having the surgery
+Wendy Ellison there are far more successes than failures. You should only have the surgery if you are 100% certain

not able to eat pork. makes me choke.
3:58 minutes doctor makes a mistake by what he emphasizes. Please fix.
Not easy to fix a video. It's good for people to realize that even doctors make mistakes from time to time.
