Speed Level Design - Fantasy Ruins - Unreal Engine 4

  • Hey everyone! In this speed level design I develop an outdoor fantasy setting focused on crumbling ruins. They have been here for some time so grass and dirt have begun growing on top of certain parts of the ruins and stones. I also got a character in this time! Was super exciting to have this paladin running around.

    I literally have zero knowledge of using an engine but watching people like you create levels or games with it is just so fascinating! A level in a game or a cinematic scene that’s short could take HOURS to make. It’s just crazy how the behind the scenes work. Just wow. Watching this inspired me to do something with my art talent. Even if I can’t do something with a computer, bringing something to life is still amazing even on paper so thank you :)

    Hey everyone! Today I developed a fantasy ruins style environment. Make sure to watch it at 1080p and to check out Vindsvepts music! I left a link in the description.

      Matthew Palaje thanks for another great video- what assests did you use because i'd love to make some levels but dont have a budget for assests-do you know of any decent free packages? Oh also do you design the level on paper first and work around that or work it out as you go?

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому +2

      Hey S0L ACE I put all of the assets in the description :) If you don't have a budget I'd go and find the infinity blade environment assets on the Unreal Marketplace. They are free.
      Nope! My main focus was to make something that looked nice and had great lighting/post processing. So this isn't designed to be a level for a game.

    Thanks for actually doing a level design! 99% of the 'speed level design' videos on UA-cam are basic scenes which are to be viewed from one specific angle but you actually make a level you can traverse.

    I love how you put so much time and effort into making something new, trying to make yourself better at this. (I'm lucky i find myself learning something new within an hour or so a day in UE4)

      @kronicgaming978 7 років тому

      I just try not to overdo myself with learning the new things. I'll learn it, then understand how it works before i move onto something else.
      Also you wouldn't happen to have any idea how to make a low poly tree sway? (It's not all the fancy leaves and everything, it's just a solid mesh)
      imgur.com/a/T8Wml
      The trees you see in the back and etc.

    • @kronicgaming978
      @kronicgaming978 7 років тому

      I've tried that and it doesn't work the way i want it too look. I did a similar setup to make the Ocean/Water have waves with, but my trees are just too "solid" for it too look good haha. Thanks anyways.

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому

      Oh damn.. hmm, you see I did that system for my low poly tree environment and it worked kinda well. This one here: ua-cam.com/video/2LWkN5cdJCs/v-deo.html If you skip to 4.18 in the video you'll see the trees moving.
      Might not be what you're after tho.

    The scene looks very good, I especially like the lighting of it. But I think it is too flat, there are no height variations in this level, and I think this makes it look less interesting. Otherwise I like this scene.

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому

      Thanks Timon!
      Actually I have quite a few height variations. The outskirts of the map is all raised at different heights. The area between the two buildings has a ton of height variation near the stair case and the buildings have dirt/grass raised into them :)

  • @nec8050

    Awesome environment. Have a few questions if you don't mind, number one is what programs did you primarily use for foliage, rocks, trees, ETC? My second is do you have any resources/tutorials, paid or free that really helped you achieve this level of detail? and last but not least where is most of the work done? By that I mean are most of the assets heavily UE4 shader reliant, or do you try and make them work before imported into the engine with very little tweaks if that makes sense???
    Personally I am particularly interested in outdoor environmental design yet I struggle finding good resources or even finding a good program workflow to achieve great results the best I got so far are on my channel. Once again awesome environment, very inspiring I hope to be able to achieve a similar skill set in the future.. keep it up! :)

    Well that music sounds like broken dream's! Works really well with the ruin theme you have there. Question, When you do a speed level design do you put a time limit or just go with a flow for say? looking at the video time for yourself start to finish it took 2 hours and 9 mins give or take!

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому

      Good question!
      I pretty much get everything together which can be a little tedious. Once it's all setup I just go and I usually get super focused and absorbed. I'm not really thinking when I'm working, I believe they call it a flow state but yeah I'm just hyper focused and go on auto pilot.
      At some point I take a step back, look at it and go make tea. When I come back if I'm happy with it I'll upload it. If not I'll tweak post processing/lighting and then I'll do the final camera shots or in this case I ran around with the character.

      Definitely takes a long time making assets. Coding everything takes just as long though! As for level design it really depends. If its a huge open world it will take a long time. If it's a balanced PvP game it will still take a long time as you usually start with sketching a map to measure distances, doing a block out to teat gameplay and make sure its balanced, then finally dressing it with the assets. Most games will have a game design document as well as multiple documents of various other parts like assets and maps. Making a map in the style of a speed design video isn't usually dome as you usually want to do a LOT of planning and testing to make sure gameplay feels good on it

    Im 14..is it a good age to start game development??

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  6 років тому +1

      It's a great age! Learn the game engines that you're interested in and have fun with it. You're really lucky as you have a ton of choice and so many resources to learn game development.
      I was very limited when I was younger and people before me were even more limited so take advantage of the internet and get learning!

    could you make a tutorial of how you made this camera look ? i mean lighting, colors and the anti aliasing. because this look is the look i had in mind for my game but i couldn't remake it, sincerely it's the best look i've ever seen!
    ps: do you think it's possible to make design it in unity3d ?

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому

      Oh wow, thanks Sattam! Really nice of you to say. It's hard for me to reproduce this look as I kind of did it when I was super focused and wasn't exactly thinking. But if you slow down the footage at the time when I'm changing the post processing you'll be able to replicate it :)
      Hmm.. that's tough to answer as I know people are going to jump all over this comment to defend it but oh well. I switched to Unreal because Unity couldn't output the high level of visuals that I wanted to strive towards. So I believe you could try and get this level of lighting. But to get this quality, whilst rendering this many drawcalls and sustaining the performance, I don't Unity is capable of this at all.

      appreciate your reply, i'll probably will do that :)
      do you think that jumping into unreal engine as a unity developer is an east thing to do ? keep in mind i use c# and i'm not familiar with c++.
      many thanks for the content.

      No problem :)
      If you are willing to try it out, you don't have to use C++. Unreal has a visual scripting language called BluePrints, I have an entire tutorial series covering various aspects of it :)

      I'd recommend checking out the foundation video first.

      how far will the blueprints take you ? creating a whole game with it?

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 років тому

      So far I'm creating an entire VR game with just blueprints. A lot of other developers have used only blueprints for games. I'd just do some research on google and get started asap!

      Hey Octave, I've never really used Sketchup before. If you do a video on your channel it can help people who want to use it for unreal :)
