- Join me as we unravel the secrets of candle making. I'm here to share practical tips, formulas, and ideas that actually work, making candle making a breeze.
If you've ever felt frustrated trying to figure out the right combination of waxes and wicks for your candles, look no further - this video is your solution! I've tested various formulas and stumbled upon one that helped me earn over $250,000 in just a year. When I started my candle business, I aimed to master the craft and understand the science behind it. Armed with this knowledge, I consistently create successful candle formulas.
Disclaimer: The formula I originally used involved blending coconut and soy wax. However, due to significant price increases since 2019, this method became cost-inefficient. The formula I share in this video is my current go-to, offering the same amazing results.
FORMULA + LINKS
This formula will fill 8-9 straight-sided tumblers from Candle Science. The amount will vary based on the amount of fragrance oil you use.
74 oz- 454 Wax
8-10 oz Fragrance Oil
This recipe will make about eight, 8.5-9oz candles
The amount of fragrance oil you use will vary based on the type of fragrance. For a quality hot throw, I recommend 9-10 oz for most fragrances. The scent throw you will get from this formula is pleasant-strong (If that's a word). :)

Fragrance Oil
Thermometer
Scale
Heat-resistant Heating Element
Pouring Pitcher
Heating Element or Melting Pot
Wick Holders
The wick size can vary based on the fragrance you use, but an Eco 10 or 12 usually work best.
ALWAYS test your candles, before selling or giving away!
BONUS: You can find most of these items in a candle making kit from major suppliers. These kits provide a working candle formula, saving you from reinventing the wheel. Check out Cierra Candle's Candle Making kit, which uses Soy wax and HTP Wicks for a different recipe.

THank you! I have a video on how to make my Strawberries and whipped cream candle being edited now. It includes a brief explanation on marbling. A full video will come in March...well that the plan. :)
new subbie, love your energy
I came across your Uplfift videos just yesterday and my brain started working overtime. Candle business is not something I looked at before, but my interest is now piqued. Unfortunately, I reside in the Caribbean so ordering items from abroad will be costly and we don't have fullfillment companies here so that would limit exports. But it is something to look into after seeing you and getting such positive vibes from your energy.
Congratulations on your Success 🎉🎉

Hello My name is Lineo in Lesotho Maseru where can i get this candle equipment? May you please provide a candle making training for me
Thanks for the knowledge and inspiration to try to make my own candles instead of sending all this money on all these expensive brands. I will be following you now thanks!
You are so welcome! Just copy this recipe and it will be easy!
I admire your candle journey and you are an inspiration when I’m having a bad sales day. Do you mentor?
Hi. I’ve watched this video so many times. I am so inspired. Can you please tell me what FO you used in this video please.
I absolutely LOVE your story!!! Your talent at making candles and your drive is ADMIRING!!! I do have a question for you! I sell crystals and have struggled to find packaging up to my standards. Would you please tell me where you get your labels and boxes and what other suggestions do you have?
You do mentorship? I saw you on a channel a year or two ago and been inspired ever since and to see you pop with your own page I know it’s a sign!!!
Hey!!! I do offer mentorship inside my business collective. Lots of great information and a supportive community! You can get more information here! www.blksunflowerbusinesscollective.com
pouring fragrance directly from the bottle in the wax is bold lol like what if you go to much? loved the video btw
I’m a rebel! lol But foreal, I used a scale, so I was watching the measurements as I poured. Probably should have shown that in the video.
That amount is Amazing the price is that you've made in a year is unbelievable where were you selling them at congratulations baby I'm wishing you much success
Thank you! I was shocked myself, and beyond thankful.
Thank you for this video, I just came across your channel and I think it’s a God send because I have been thinking about starting a candle business. Do you mind letting me know where you buy your fragrances, I want to try different places. Thank you in advance
Welcome to the world of candle making! You have come to the right place! I am on a mission to simplifying the world of candle making.
Thank you for the video you are an inspiration. I was wondering if you would suggest a good wick for my 10oz candles I find that the ECO 6 is not working it seems too hot , is there a particular one that you suggest so that I get a good HT?
Hey Queen ❤❤❤❤
Hey!! Thank you for watching!
Hi. I love your video ! question how much scented oil do you put in ?? I have be trying to make candles for a few weeks now im just learn to get everything from candle science
Beautiful why do you put three wicks ?
Thank you so much for sharing and being an inspiration to others. Can you share which companies you purchase your oils and dye from?.
You are so welcome! Most of my supplies are from Cierra Candles and Candle Science
Do you have an opinion you could share on wooden wicks?
I would love to try one of your candles . Also my only headache is finding the wick size how do you find yours or do you use the guides from other sites?
I’ve always used Eco Wicks and a coconut soy blend, so I’m used to working with it. Lone start candle supply has a great wick guide in their university! Just go to their page it’s free!
Great video, I make wax melts, I see in the description you stated to use a certain kind of wax, I typically use pillar wax, any suggestions for using this wax as far as amount of fragrance oil and I guess using pillar wax versus your recipe??
This wax would be too soft for a pillar candle. Typically a soy wax blend with paraffin would be used. Or even a beeswax. I heard Candle Science has an Eco Soya Pillar wax that is good. As for the fragrance oil, the measurement is about the same.
How often do you test your candles? What size containers were the single wick ones? Where do you get your wick stickers and are the small ones
The label on the bottom of the jar is also from the same label making place or does that automatically come with the jar?
What additives do you add to enhance your hot throw.
Thanks for this baby girl
Is there a way to get a hot and cold throw in one candle? If so, what do you recommend?
Hi I have a question if you could answer please. I had a few products in a box that I was saving to start a project of candle making just for myself and family, add not got round to doing it and completely forgot about the box anyway the other day I got it out I'm realised that some oil I believe it was sheer butter or coconut oil that I've had in the same box, anyway I feel that some have the oil is on the wax beads as I can feel the oil on them it's not it's not on all the beads but will I still be able to use the beads or can I not make or can I not use the wax now, any advice would be great thank you.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Question: How do you know the wax weight for each individual candle without weighing the wax you're pouring into the vessel?
I also have a candle named Clarity 😄
Love it! They bring so much clarity so it’s fitting!! Great minds!😝
Gday where ca i buy all my goods
I miss making candles. But the candle making business is so saturated with so many people making candles. but I really want to start again but I’m also not good at marketing and advertising
Do it for the enjoyment, not the money. We all have something special and your people will find you. (With the right marketing) think of all the different types of bread at the stop, but that doesn’t stop companies from making more bread! 😝
@@BlkSunflowerco true
Do you measure the amount of fragrance oil before putting it into the wax? If yes then what's the measurement?
I don’t pre measure, but pour in the oil while the pouring pitcher is on the scale. For this recipe I used 9oz to 74oz fragrance oil.
My biggest issue has been choosing the right wick 😢. That black soot ball forms. I’ve tried wooden wicks and they look and sound pretty but I prefer regular cotton wicks. It’s actually been discouraging because I’ve tried multiple different types. What is your recommendation?
That ball is called mushrooming. It’s happens with most wicks to some extent. if it’s bad your wick might be sized too large and you need to wick down. Lx wicks are know to be self trimming. I’ve never used them so I can’t speak from experience.
How long after making a candle is it useable?
I use mine after 24 hrs.
Thanks. It IS which kind of wax ? E wax?
All the details and the formula is in the description. ☺️
Do you get redemade wax to buy
I’m not sure what you mean by redemade wax. I use a 454 or 464 coconut soy blend if that helps.
That pouring temperature is important because it’s the time between the oil and the wax still binding together. And any experience candlemaker knows this. That’s why this is apart of the process.
Thank you for your input. I have made thousands of candles and poured them at different temps and always get the same results from this Formula. A great hot and cold throw. It may matter more for other waxes, but for this one this works for me. The I believe the most important temp in candle making is when you add the fragrance to the wax, combined with stirring slowly. This will allow the fragrance oil and wax to bind properly. There are many different views, when it comes to procedures in candle making. My goal is to reduce the number of things that candle makers stress about, and I just want people to know pouring at the “wrong temp” is not the end of the world.
@@BlkSunflowerco Hello, thank you very much for your answer. Can you tell us which wax you use for your candles?
I have a few questions.
1. do you use SCX wax?
2. you say in the video that the wax should be heated to 190 degrees and at 185 degrees you can add the fragrance oil.
However, many manufacturers say that you should heat the wax to 150 degrees and add the fragrance oil at 140 degrees. Allegedly, the fragrance molecules then break down because otherwise it gets too hot. This is the case with SCX wax, for example. But with the 464 wax, the temperatures are not that high either.
Could you please write something about this, because I would like to understand it and I am sure that you know what you are doing :-) I would really appreciate an answer.
Thank you for your questions. I have the details of the exact wax and other materials I use in the description. For this particular wax , 454 I have always heated it to 190, and just make sure to pour in the fragrance before it reaches below 185. the temp can drop quickly depending on your environment, and you don't want to miss that window. (I tend to find something to distract me) Most of the waxes I've used need to be heated higher for the wax and fragrance to combine, 150 is way to low for this wax. I've learned to use what I read as a guide, and tweak based upon other things I've learned and trial and error. My ways may not always be what everyone else is doing, but they are what work for me. I'm never afraid to question the norm, or ask questions like you did. This is how we grow! Thanks again.
I am starting my candle business also, I have the name , the jars, the scents, I am in my process( a mother of 10)
Congratulations on getting started! Honestly sometimes that is the hardest step! All while be a mommy to 10! I'm impressed!
Same here, I am a sahm trying to start a at home business and give me a great hobby to do at the house and make money for my family as well but mostly because I love candles
So if my math is mathing…the fragrance load is abt 10-11%? I have so many jars here…def gonna test this in the frosted jars.
You are correct. It’s about 1oz of fragrance to 8oz of wax, give or take. Upon testing if you can use less go for it and save some money!! 😝
Hi hun where do u recommend I get a good fragrance oil. ??
My Favs are from Cierra Candles and Candle Science!
Yes! Makesy is great too! They tend to be a bit pricier, but worth it.
@@BlkSunflowerco thanks u cause I’m about to cry. Made 7 candles with coconut apricot. Not one HT smh. Tried CDs and ECO wick an no luck. I’m ready to give up.
@tahliah222 thanks
@@islandstar8974 try CDN series wicks. The soft waxes like Coconut Blends need smaller wicks. I got that info from Sixteen Seventeen Candles and I’ve had very good cold / hot throws.
Question is this recipe to make one single wick candle? If not how much fragrance would I use for one candle if I’m using all the same supplies?
Thank you for bring to my attention I did not specify this in the description. It fixed now. This formula will get you about 8 candles, in the straight sided tumbler. I use about 1 oz fragrance to 8 oz wax, a little less, or more depending on the fragrance oil you are using. This measurement has worked for me with this wax everything. Hope this helps! and thanks again.
I’m going to try this wax cause soy 10 n coconut apricot I can’t get no HT and I’m following all the directions smh. Trying this will let u know. But I’m using 9oz straight sided jars. Wish me luck. Cause I’m about to give up.
Yes!! Please let me know how this works for you!! And that apricot wax is expensive 😅 my motto if it smells good it will sell. No fancy wax needed! You got this!!
I have one more question. Do you allow this wax the full 14 day cure time before conducting a burn test and shipping to customers ? Or are you a rebel and break that rule?
Great question. I wouldn’t call it being a rebel 😝 but I always like to test theories myself, and when I couldn’t make candles fast enough to keep up with the orders, one day I tested my candle 24hrs after making and it was great. Since this i never wait 14 days. And no complaints. ☺️
I’m just getting started and I’m not selling them yet
Do you sell your scents you sue the fragrances or do you sell a recommendation sheet of fragrances that you prefer
I get most of my fragrances from Candle Science or Cierra candles

I would love to help everyone individually but I can’t so instead I’ve created my business collective, answer to most questions and more can be found there if you are interested. www.blksunflowerbusinesscollective.com
