Eric, I am gonna thank you. When I was a kid, I played guitar literally every single day. My grandpa was to me the best guitarist I know, and he taught me everything I know. Getting into college, I sorta got out of it. I was more focused on passing, getting ready for the real world, and getting into my career. Because of this video, I broke out my Gib, turned off the TV, and played music. Sure I'm a little rusty, but getting back to how it was is a great thing. Hell, my wife just got home, and she was amazed how well I was doing. My son now thinks I'm a rockstar. Thanks man for getting me back into playing!
I've been playing for a decade. Im 23 now and I'm still learning. I love your channel. Guitar? And guns? Absolutely. Everything I love the most in one channel 👍🏻
Have been playing guitar 25 years, I think there is a lot of really good advice in this vid, great job Eric. I think the thing you left out is time/commitment. It takes years to really learn to play reasonably well. My recent guitar student was the kind of kid who always wanted to twiddle his thumbs on a play station controller rather than a fret board. Not once was he ever practicing before I showed up, not once did I ever call and he was practicing. IF you can't make guitar your form of relaxation to a certain extent, or you are into way many more things and can't commit to putting a certain amount of actual time in a week then you won't see the type of progress you are wanting to. Some people are truly gifted with the instrument, but most have to work at it. My student quit recently because he "Didn't like it." In truth it just wasn't as easy as picking up a game controller.
Hello Eric, I want to thank-you for telling it like it is. I'm 59, after not picking up an axe in close to 45 years I have taken the plunge and enjoying every moment. Keep up the the great work and cheers from Canada.
Good and inexpensive equipment is out there. I purchased a like new MIM 70's Classic Jazz Bass with 150 watt amp for half the retail price. I found the great deal through a used stuff app. The equipment is out there, you just have to be patient and keep looking.
I started playing like 2 years ago. And whenever I hit a wall and get discouraged after listening to some really good guy on UA-cam I remind myself they’ve been playing for 20 years and I can’t expect myself to be as good as them in only a few years. My main problem is different strum patterns/rhythms. I often fall back on the same ones a lot of the time.
I've only been playing a guitar for about 5 years. Never had a lesson and I've turned out better than I've ever thought. My vocals teacher back in highschool told me when I started that I'd never get anywhere without lessons.. I really surprised him by the end of grade 12. Now obviously I'm nowhere near as good as guys like you who have been playing for 20-30+ years, but I'm glad with how far I've come with just my epiphone DR100 and a few chord books
I learned guitar myself but I did play piano that my sister taught me, so the notes that held similar sound I kinda put together just by ear, o really wish I had this video to learn from. Great video eric
Dude, I'm a little late to the party, but you are the man! I had wondered about the camo fender hat, and lo' the man can jam! I can't begin to express my enthusiasm for firearms and music that seems effortless to you. Sing brother, we hear.
Practice alternate picking early on. I taught myself guitar playing thrash metal tabs using almost exclusively downstrokes and it was really difficult to overcome that muscle memory later on when I knew better
Tablature has been around for centuries A true master guitar player will always be a student Fantastic video. Where were you 17 years ago when I started?
@Guitarsenal I just found your channel cause it was mentioned on that CZ video. I had no idea about your guitar playing. Could you make a video on how to move from a living room player to play with others that are seriously way beyond one's ability? I have several opportunities to do so, but what are the skills to be able to play with them, stay in the background without tripping over one's feet? Getting the signals, when to look to the drummer or bass player and what theory is needed to be able to communicate in a way that you aren't a drag? Haven't found a single guitar channel that really goes into that. I've been playing for years, but I have a lot to learn in basics and theory.
So great that you guys started this channel, I had no idea! (I love seeing Zoot Allures behind you as well!) I've always loved your firearms videos, but as a pro guitarist myself, I'm tickled to death that you guys are musicians as well. So cool! Looking forward to watching more of these videos. Keep up the great work, and rock on!
I think keeping the passion is important. You said it well, overwhelming yourself too early and setting the bar high can be a mistake. Thanks for the video.
best news i heard all day was this channel!!! been a longtime subscriber and now another thing i am obsessed with has its own channel?!? I just bought a 1964 Gibson SG Special and it rocks!!! cheers from texas!
Great to see you have started a guitar channel Eric. I really enjoyed what you and Chad had to say in the Gun Gripe # 147 video. NRA has too many cooties. I remember 10 years ago voting for Ron Paul in the 2008 presidential election. It seems when both parties do not like a certain individual running for president, you know that individual is for real. A shame he never won. I believe at 5:56 you are playing Green Day's "Time of Your Life" (Good Riddance). That was actually the first song I learned to play on my sister's Yamaha guitar at the age of 13 and learned to play it by ear. I like Green Day's old albums, they were a cool alternative rock band back then. Do you like classical music? A lot of old rock n roll and early heavy metal seems to be inspired by blues, rockabilly, and classical music even. My very first instrument I played was the trumpet in 4th grade. I was part of a Trumpet Ensemble in my elementary school. Fun days. God bless Eric!
I didn’t get really good until I got at least mid level equipment. The sound quality alone made me want to practice because your playing sounds better and it gives you a positive feedback loop to practice more. I had a $400 Jackson with a Floyd Rose bridge, a Crate 100w half stack, and a decent rack mount multi-effect unit. Before the rackmount I started with pedal effects. Probably about $1000 total in 1990’s dollars.
Man I dig guns, muscle cars and of course music. Blues, metal, jazz and rock n roll are my favorites. Man i played electric guitar for 16 years before my hand scrapped out on me. Cool to see there are others like me out there and I’m not alone in my interests
Funny enough, I bought that same Strat Standard, same color too, for my first guitar back in 1997. I traded it for labor during a move since I couldn't manage the big furniture on my own. Maybe I'll have to try tracking down one of those again. As a side note, Eric, you're not that old. Tablature, in various forms, have been around for ages, well before you or I were a glimmer in the eye.
Thank you so much for you and this Channel, I was watching Iraq 8888 When you spoke about your guitar channel , I've been trying to learn for years, I am 57 years old and both my sons are self taught and play the Guitar great, I am a little Jealous LOL, I have given up many times before, but this time I'm gonna stick with it, with the help of your Videos. I'm gonna buy me a new Electric guitar and I'm gonna learn from you and take your advise. I'm a big Gun Guy, and I love your other channel !!!, I have been a big fan for years. I'm definitely gonna to plug you in as my go to guitar channel, and my Teacher. Again thank you so much, Your friend from the deep South Tampa Florida, LOL 😆 Von (Eric) Smith
Hey Eric. Love this new channel, as I am a guitarist who loves guns as well, and I’m so glad you chose to make a new channel based on guitar. I just recently found IV8888, so this is cool for me how you’re into guitars, like me. Your tips definitely would be helpful to a beginner. I started on an Epiphone LP100 (still have it), now I have many guitars including a Gibson Les Paul, Dean ML, and a Schecter V. I had no idea you were so good at guitar, or even played till recently. I like that solo at the beginning. It starts off with the open d trill like Jimi Hendrix would do, and it ends off in a way that reminds me of War Pigs by Black Sabbath. You seem like you’d be a cool dude to jam with.
I also didn’t use tabs (I’m watching as I write this) to learn songs as a kid, although I could have. I still took the effort to learn a ton of Black Sabbath songs by ear, so I love that tip. It helped me a lot learning by ear as it told me where certain notes are, without having to look it up. I actually used a vinyl record to learn the whole Heaven and Hell album by Black Sabbath when I was 13, and if I used tabs, I don’t think I’d know the album as good.
My Father bought me my first guitar when I was 8. Now I'm 34. I joined the Army in 2001 and was stationed in Fort Richardson Alaska. It was a Washburn Lyon (POS I know but it was my first) and it came up missing along with a .54 caliber CVA muzzeloader when my personal property showed up to Alaska (I was married so they shipped my shit).
1st guitar was an ibanez roadstar II 2. epiphone les Paul, basic , but playing it several times before buying it clued me into some key things that were right. 3. My baby , a takamine dreadnought made '89
through a long series of events i won't type out I came into possesion of a '84 ibanez road star II. it was modded long before I got it, with an extra pickup and a Kahler tremolo bridge from the '80's and a locking nut. sounds beautifully distorted with no distortion set on the amp. unfortunately I can't figure out the damn bridge so I can try to play it properly. I've tried on and off for about 7 years but ain't gotten anywhere. I tried on my own for 6 years then decided to try lessons, had one lesson and haven't been back for another. I find I just don't have the patience. I also taught myself some really bad habits that get in the way, for example cradling the neck so it sets on my hand instead of almost kinda floating. anyway I love the ibanez road star II's they're pretty nice, even though I can't play I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.
I'd say 3-400 is a sweet spot for guitars that are quality and can be resold easy enough if it doesn't work out. guitars are like guns in that if you do your research to not overpay initially most hold steady value
Eric, new to channel, got here from IV8888, love the same things Guns, Guitars, Fishing Any Jazz videos on the channel, I have to go look, would be cool to see a vid with you playing a hollow body jazz box
I had a bunch of old second hand guitar magazines back in 1995 with tab. So how old are if there wasn't tab when you were thirteen? Anybody remember OLGA?
Iraqveteran8888 its not easy being 13 we've all been there. You just have to make do with whatever you have. Cardboard, string, rubber bands and sticky tape.
Iraqveteran8888 hey been a subscriber for quite a while now! Awesome to hear from the second channel! Been playing bass for almost 10 years now, but never considered me as a master of this Instrument...can t even play basic slap technics, but my goal was to play some cover music with my buddys at the weekends, and i am really fine with that! Have a great weekend and take care! Btw eric: what music do you prefer? Want to know...thanks and greets from Germany;)
On the subject of used guitars... Yeah you sort of can get more value for less money buying a used guitar. But what looks important to me is for a new guy to get the kind of guitar he wants. He probably never held a guitar before, probably never even saw them close. When a new guy comes to a store there are all those guitars hanging there - he can instinctively sort of tell what kind of a guitar he would want to play. If he's into blues or country music he may instantly go check out Strats and Teles, if he's into heavy metal he'll pick a Jackson or an Ibanez. Or mayber not but he'll pick the one that appeals to him. He won't get that feeling by looking through the internet for used guitars. These will be only picture for him until he comes right there and takes the thing in his hands. If a guy already knows what kind of guitar he wants - then by all means he can look it up from the used options. But if he doesn't have a clue I think he needs to see them all at once and he should pick up the one that looks sexier for him personally. I helped new guys buy guitars and my opinion has always been that if a guy wants that Randy Rhoads with a floyd rose that's gonna give him some pain in the ass - let him have it. It's easier to learn how to adjust the floyd rose and to hold the Randy Rhoads than it is to learn how to play a guitar you don't find sexy enough. Fortunately nowadays cheaper options are available for almost any design and of decent quality too. Let him make an instinctive choice I say and then I'll quality check it and tell him if it's good value for the buck.
Hey Eric: I am a faithful follower on your gun channel for several years. I really love this new channel. I am a bassist and started playing in 1979 when I bought a 1967 Fender Jazz bass from my brother who was broke and in college. I had a paper route and bought it for $150. Regrettably, I sold it in 1988 not knowing the future investment value for these instruments would sky rocket. Since then I have had many Fender Jazz basses, a couple 5 string basses, and currently play a Ibanez SR405QM 5 string. I bought an acoustic 6 string guitar and piddle around with it because I thought learning guitar chords could help me further with my bass playing (I play all styles). I do know theory, can sight read chord charts, and know basic reading of notes. Can you do a video and talk on applying guitar playing to bass playing? Thanks. Patrick.
Hey Eric, How much did that relic job on that tele cost you? j/k I appreciate you talking about theory. Seems like a lot of Guitarists neglect theory as a waste of time. I'm still in the beginning stages of learning, and I want to know as much theory as possible.
Always, And I mean always learn your theory. Learn at least the basic theory, your enjoyment of what ever task you set out to do will be so much higher. Same applies to chess, you can learn the rules and the basics, and be able to play the game. But ill dominate that person at the board because I've studied the theory. Music is no different, you can learn the basics of the instrument, learn the rules (so to speak) and probably be able to play OK. There will always be that level though, that you won't reach. In anything in life theres knowing how to do something and knowing why to do something, and knowing the why makes it so much more enjoyable. Some might even say spiritual in a way. Something else worth mentioning is you're always learning, always developing and honing your skill, and thats the fun part.
Yeah, I totally agree. If you wanna learn how to play to get the girls - do it. Playing music has never done anybody anything but good. Music is good for you. Even if you can only play one song and know a bunch of chords - it's still good for you. I came the long way. I started playing a guitar all by myself. Joined a band to play some metal stuff, picked up some stuff from a lead guitarist there. But I soon came to understand one needs an education to really get all this and not just play the tablatures. So I started reading books, learning notes... But what a rock'n'roll guy wants to do? He wants to write his own songs. So I started singing and got interested in classical music to learn my theory from it... And to cut the story short I graduated as an opera singer for my second degree. I do not earn my living with it because it doesn't pay much where I live unless you're a star. But wanting to impress girls by playing a few songs ultimately led me to an actual musical education. I'm not too much of a guitarist still because I spent most of my time learning how to sing. But you know - 15 years past the day I first picked up a guitar I can sure as hell impress girls now. Play and sing "I walk the line" like old Johny did or "Ghost Riders" and all the girls are yours for the takin'.
I had an inexpensive (not cheap) and it needed $300 I’d set up work. The guitar was $400. My favorite guitars I currently own are my Ibanez JEM and my Ibanez Prestige.
Please please please release some musical theory videos. Been a mediocre self taught guitarist for 10ish years now and would love to go deeper. Been a LONG TIME fan of Iraqiveteran8888
Eric what’s your opinion on Snark tuners (the little one that clip on the heads) I’ve been using them for years. Everyone I know that plays uses them and they’re only $10. You’re saying spend $40 and the most expensive one I can think of is the boss and it’s like a hundred bucks. So I’m not sure what these $1000 tuners you mentioned are or what the advantage is for something like that.
Great tips, but nothing matters if the guitar is not set up correctly. I know a lot of decent players, but few know how to properly set up a guitar to begin with. Guitars are like cars. You can have the best in the world, but if the tires aren't balanced, the alignment is out, the engine is tuned badly etc, then it is no better than the neighbor's junk yard VW. Some set up videos would be awesome.
You sound like Tommy Emmanuel talking about trying to play songs off the radio. Listening to songs over and over and trying to figure out how to play it. Good advice if Tommy says the same thing. And lastly you need to run more as you are becoming a well rounded guitar player.
Squiers are NOT to be overlooked for first guitars as well...some really good ones can be had for under $300. I bought a bullet Strat out the door for $125 and that thing screams.
I bought a squier affinity tele for 135$ and yes the tone knob didn’t work right and was broken but it was set to the point it sounded very good and im thinking about looking at an affinity strat and a nicer amp
One word, for the beginning musician, Yamaha. No matter the instrument, the Japanese build the absolute best, whether beginner, journeyman, or master. I'm a trumpet player, and whether the 23 series for the beginner, or the Xeno for the master, build some INCREDIBLE instruments. Whether you play guitar or cello, look to Yamaha for a solid instrument. That you threw in John Mayer, Joe Pass, and Pat Metheny, major props.
Yeah. I started on Yamaha Pacifica 012 back in the day... It was like 15 years ago I believe. Was all I could afford. Saved my every penny for it. And as far as I know that guitar is still alive and good although I later sold it to a friend. Although it was one of the cheapest ones they had it was decent quality for the money, it held adjustments and was an alright guitar to start with.
Good points, there are better options out there, but nothing that matches Yamaha in the price to performance department. Once you go beyond that quality, your wallet better lube up.
brother you got some chops☆ and also to the beginners find the song that's reasonable learnable for beginner that you really really like and use that as your first plateau learn something simple if you're a rock guy Black Sabbath Paranoid very easy song and anything you're looking for is on UA-cam 95%...... keep Rock and brothers and sisters ... and get a good amp American music supply or Z zounds will take payments off of your debit card and send the merchandise to you right away very easy to do grab something decent*
Hello Eric! Nice video and spot on point. I have a beginner student that this video is going to be the first part of his lesson tomorrow to let him hear another man’s words reinforce the points I have been teaching him about ear training, basic theory, muscle memory, knowing his instrument, and having and understanding his purpose for learning to play guitar. I am very much looking forward to the continued posts you add to this channel. BTW, I really like your tele...
Thank you! I gave guitar lessons for a short time and I’d like to think I did an okay job. We will do some more beginners primers and things to help people getting into it.
Iraqveteran8888 you ARE a good teacher/instructor and the best way to maintain your own edge is to teach. Keep on teaching and take some refresher lessons sometimes too. 😉
I should be some specific. I didn’t have access to them and they weren’t readily available to me. It wasn’t correct to say they didn’t exist...just not to me...lol
this is wear guns and guitars have alot in common,,i suggest you by quality used guitar...made in Mexico fenders are great and can be modified as you go ..made in japan fenders are better..a used mim strat 250-325...used mij strat...500-800 and their good to go as is most times!...and for gods sake stay away from new gibsons...just my humble opinion..
Eric, I am gonna thank you. When I was a kid, I played guitar literally every single day. My grandpa was to me the best guitarist I know, and he taught me everything I know. Got my first guitar at Moss in 1978. An Aria acoustic that happened to have a bolt-on neck. Miss that thing. =(

Iv8888 for life! So glad you plugged the channel in the firearms storage video. I've been wondering about Eric's fender hat for years
I learned guitar myself but I did play piano that my sister taught me, so the notes that held similar sound I kinda put together just by ear, o really wish I had this video to learn from. Great video eric

I think keeping the passion is important. You said it well, overwhelming yourself too early and setting the bar high can be a mistake. Thanks for the video.
MusicMan hat WOWw had Twin version back in 80s.
Love uncle Ted in the backround!

Hey love your new channel and your gun channel :) is there any possibility you guys are gonna do a bass vid?
Please do a video on finger picking. I've always been a little weak in that department
you can download a tuner on your smart phone. I have a tuner pedal and have checked the guitar after I tuned it with the phone and it is spot on.
Learned a bunch about guns from you bro , now I see you love guitar too. Too cool. God bless from over in Central Louisiana
its great to be here im happy you started this channel i love what your doing here and i dont even play guitar i play banjo

It was a Washburn Lyon (POS I know but it was my first) and it came up missing along with a .54 caliber CVA muzzeloader when my personal property showed up to Alaska (I was married so they shipped my shit).
1st guitar was an ibanez roadstar II
2. epiphone les Paul, basic , but playing it several times before buying it clued me into some key things that were right.
Ì wish I had learned guitar before I had my stroke. Now singing is gone. And so is playing guitar.
I love the Korg tuners
Have you played in bands ie gigging ?
Hey man, can you do a video on barre chords?
Absolutely
Eric - how are your ears after all the firearm exposure? Do you have “shooters ear” tinnitus on the left side?
Great playing Eric.
👍🏻
PS I had a squire as my second guitar. My last was a vintage Kramer (american 1987) shredder. It was a Ferrari of axes in the day.
Eric, new to channel, got here from IV8888, love the same things Guns, Guitars, Fishing
Any Jazz videos on the channel, I have to go look, would be cool to see a vid with you playing a hollow body jazz box
good advice. hope this channel is successful.
how much should a Fender Telecaster made in usa 2012 limited edition brown sunburst cost?
Eric, I love the new channel! What year is that Tele???
I had a bunch of old second hand guitar magazines back in 1995 with tab. So how old are if there wasn't tab when you were thirteen? Anybody remember OLGA?
Allow me to clarify. I didn’t have access to any of that. If it was around I didn’t know
Iraqveteran8888 its not easy being 13 we've all been there. You just have to make do with whatever you have. Cardboard, string, rubber bands and sticky tape.
Amp Meltdown. DO IT!
I think the word "binary" may be of use here.
If you want that done easily. Start with a British made ashdown......mine died this year.
I'm loving these vids.
Thanks!
Thank you for doing this new channel. I really hope you can find a way to do some teaching.
Very cool channel! Will you be featuring any bass guitars at some point?
Yes
Yay, thx!
Thank you Eric. I have enjoyed your firearms channel for years! Now I get a guitar channel too!
Thanks. Patrick.
I love the Musicmaster!!!!
Hey Eric, How much did that relic job on that tele cost you? j/k
I appreciate you talking about theory. Seems like a lot of Guitarists neglect theory as a waste of time. I'm still in the beginning stages of learning, and I want to know as much theory as possible.
great video
Subbed SO hard
me too
Came here after watching The Guitologist, but I've known you longer via IV8888. never knew you were a guitar guy!
Did he mention something on his channel? I don’t think I’ve ever met him.
Someone in the comments on his most recent video did.
👍🏻
Snark is a very good tuner, they do sell as much as 40 or 50 at some shops and as low as 8.99 in other shops.
I’ve never used one, but I’ll pick one up and try it out
I can't wait for the theory videos.
Top 5 popular songs for beginners
Are we going to get any covers, or lesson?
Yes we will do a bit of both
Great tips, but nothing matters if the guitar is not set up correctly.
Steven Stewart I think it’s supposed to be like that to make it look old and used.
Squire Affinity was my first guitar! Loved it.
I bought a squier affinity tele for 135$ and yes the tone knob didn’t work right and was broken but it was set to the point it sounded very good and im thinking about looking at an affinity strat and a nicer amp
And get a VICTORY Amp!
Tuning is crucial. Same as sighting in a gun
Also, learn to set up your own guitar. Dave's World Of Fun Stuff. He's awesome!
Do you read music? Sheet music language? Can you write music proper on staff paper? Just asking.
Alvarez, but Ibanez especially. Have also owned Fender and Gibson over many many years
Good points, there are better options out there, but nothing that matches Yamaha in the price to performance department. Once you go beyond that quality, your wallet better lube up.
Guitar gripes? 5 guitars? I don't know anything about em haha
Listen to as many, as much as you can....Just like shooting a pistol...Pick up handle shoot as many as you can.
Well explained my bearded friend:)
brother you got some chops☆
and also to the beginners find the song that's reasonable learnable for beginner that you really really like and use that as your first plateau learn something simple if you're a rock guy Black Sabbath Paranoid very easy song and anything you're looking for is on UA-cam 95%...... keep Rock and brothers and sisters ...
and get a good amp American music supply or Z zounds will take payments off of your debit card and send the merchandise to you right away very easy to do grab something decent*
Maybe with these new videos I'll finally play one of my 3 guitars I don't know how to really play instead of spending more time and money on guns!
Nice "lawsuit" Ibanez!
Lol I caught the good riddance in there.
Before tab existed?? Really?
I learned in the late 80's, I'm 47 are you that old?
I should be some specific. I didn’t have access to them and they weren’t readily available to me. It wasn’t correct to say they didn’t exist...just not to me...lol
this is wear guns and guitars have alot in common,,i suggest you by quality used guitar...made in Mexico fenders are great and can be modified as you go ..made in japan fenders are better..a used mim strat 250-325...used mij strat...500-800 and their good to go as is most times!...and for gods sake stay away from new gibsons...just my humble opinion..
Where’s Barry?
Too soon
You learned guitar before tab was invented? LOL.
