Helpful lesson; thanks, David. But it looks like the video may have the scale name and fretboard diagram mismatched for the 1st scale. You say it was a minor pentatonic, but the diagram shows a 6-note scale, the minor blues scale. And it sounds like you're using the b5 sometimes in the improv. I just checked out the online material, and it has the minor blues scale as the first scale, properly named. Seems like something similar happened with the 2nd scale, too-the diagram shows the 6-note major blues scale, not the major pentatonic. Regarding mixolydian, you suggest using A mixolydian over both the I and the V. I think of E mixolydian as a good choice for the V (since it's the 5th mode with respect to the root, i.e., the I, so it's a good fit for the V7 chord). The A mixolydian was working fine over the V chord. Is there some theory behind that? -Tom
Went down the rabbit hole lookin for more on modes. Couldn't find nothing actually useful until I watched this. A little embarrassed after 5-6+ yrs of playing still don't know much about modal stuff but this helped quite a bit

using that diminished version 1, try 5-8, 6-9, 7-10, 8-11, 10-13, 11-14 from Bottom E string/fret 5 up, key of A.

What about altered over the V CHORD? or Lydian dom over the V chord. E7 E lydian dom E altered. I just feel like that's a better way to use them.

David, I think the diminished, the whole tone and the lydian dominant scales must be used from the specific roots (1, 4 or 5), not the from the same root (here A) over all three chords. Am I wrong?

Great lesson you revealed a Joe Satriani trademark Dominant lydian scale which is E melodic minor. Of all the scales no one teaches are the Soul scale, full, and major and minor and the major flat 5 which is the daddy of them all. Very nice lesson
Soul scale? Is there an intervalic name?
@@CMM5300 it was used from the 1920’s through the 40’s. Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian, even Gershwin used it. It’s about rasing the minor 3rd.

Question: When you're playing the Dorian for example, you mention that it works on the 1st and 4th degree. When playing on the first, say in "A", you're playing "A" Dorian, when you switch to the 4th degree, are you playing "D" Dorian or do you stick with playing "A" Dorian?

What? The same A minor pentatonic pattern works on root note, forth and fifth degree?
Minor blues scale, not minor pentatonic. Major blues scale, not major pentatonic scale. In my opinion the major pentatonic scale will NOT sound bluesy unless you add the flat 3rd. Without the "blue" note, the scale will just sound country and very "major".

Wasn't Pentatonic called that way because of the 5 notes in a scale? Yet I see 6 notes in yours... Where does this come from?
Yes. The diagram has an extra note added to the minor pentatonic.
It's the b5 (flat 5th); aka "the blue note". This is commonly called "the blues scale".
Use the b5 as a passing tone (don't sit on it) and enjoy.
When you add a sharp 4 to minor pentatonic, it’s called the minor blues scale.
When you add a flat 3 to major pentatonic, it’s called the major blues scale.
Hey David - nobody really solos on the last 3 strings. In fact it’s mostly the B & e string (1st & 2nd) that most Blues players stick to.
Ermmmm. .. there's only one blues scale!
That whole tone scale just sound out of tune to me.
