I bought this lens brand new a week ago for 469 uk pounds after taking a long time choosing between it and the f2 version. Here’s the reality - the focusing “noise” some people talk about is so overstated as to be beyond ridiculous. The focusing speed is not on par with the latest lenses but is still very useable. It is as quick as one needs for most photography, although those looking for an ultra fast focusing run and gun lens may be a little disappointed, in which case get the f2. The images this lens produces at f1.4 have a definite something - I can’t define it, but it’s there. Gorgeous bokeh. I am very happy, having invested such a lot of money (for me) in this lens new. By the way, I do street almost exclusively, but not run and gun style. My other lens is a 27mm pancake, and for those with that lens asking if there is any point buying another lens so close in field of view, I say buy it. You will not be disappointed. To be fair, for street, it would probably be better to couple this 35mm with a 23mm, but I like my 27mm pancake for it’s size and portability.
That's the only Fujifilm lens I have not even thought of selling, even though I used the f2 WR version, there's a pleasing character to the images that I cannot explain without the word 'magic'
I bought this lens for the 2nd time. Missed it too much... The difference in character, I think, comes from it's rendition of the contrast of the subject. When comparing side by side with the f2 WR version, I see a finer gradation from light to shadow and a bigger difference in highlight peaks and fall off to black on the f1.4.
If was going into Fuji again, it would be this lens, the 56 and the 16 F1.4 - in that order. Yes, this lens really is top of the pile even if it’s the cheapest of the 3
I ordered one for my XE3 - 322 English squids. Amazingly it arrived Christmas Eve. My first impression over the f2 version extra charm and effortlessness.
I seem to gravitate to using the 18, 35 f/1.4, or 56 on my X-Pro2. My favorite lenses on the X-E2 is the 14 and 27. I don't mind using these old "loud" lenses, they always impress me with results which is the important objective for me. More than once the 35 and 56 AF has captured me shots in very low light situations and that was with the X-Pro2. Excellent video Mattias. :)
Nice review as always!! There is something special about this lens which I’ve had for years. Lack of weather seal not a problem I’ve used it on all weathers with a bit of loose cling film nice results
The XF 35 1.4 almost never leaves my camera body, and this is for three years running. It's image quality is impeccable, and I find the field of view to be tight, yet wide enough. I first purchased the F2, and later sold it after renting the F1.4.

Good lens. I bought the 3 primes with an xpro1 years ago. The 35mm got a fair bit of use. In the end the 18mm f2 became my favourite lens and one i use today with the xpro1 still. I wish fuji would update the 18mm to give it better sharpness in the corners.

I never got this lens simply because I was waiting for the 33mm f1.0 until Fujifilm disappointed us by canceling plans for it. I know this is a great lens but I might just get the Mitakon instead even though it’s manual focus. That extra stop is important to me.
I own both. The 35 F1.4 is rather superior in every way, especially otpically. however, the Mitakon is such a fun lense to use and when you nail focus, it's especially gratifying and beautiful. I recommend that you purchase a lense hood as it's flaring and ghosting is insane, and chromatic abberation is an issue that'll force you to compose creatively. Enjoy it! I've taken some of my best images with it.
Got one along with the X-H1 (bundled as a pack, on discount) , and its been fantastic! , the images is just lovely and has this very pleasing character to it . And great review as always, I do enjoy your style on reviews in general!
As much as I love my 35mm f/2, I've always wanted to give this "classic" lens a try. "Character" is something I always hear associated with it. Great shots! Can't wait for that X-Pro3 review! :)
I had the f1.4 for a year but then tried the f2 and was amazed how much more depth and sharpens it had. Sold the f1.4 last week and bought the f2s. The rendering is such a personal thing you should definitely try it before giving up the f2.
I had the 35 f/2 before I got the f/1.4. Once I got the f/1.4, I sold the f/2 for two reasons. 1) I really like the character of the lens and 2) I have the 16-55 f/2.8, so the more versatile WR zoom compare to f/2 prime really did not seem practical.
@@anthonystonehouse I had both but sold the f2 maybe mine was a bad copy but for me the 1.4 far far exceeded the f2 even when shot at the same aperture, only benefit of the F2 is the size, and autofocus but the 1.4 is more than small enough for me and I usually use focus peaking anyway so autofocus doesn't bother me.
I guess it just proves how personal lens selection really is. I have landed with three primes that work really well together for me, all weather resistant; the 16mm f1.4 for wide angle, close up, and low light; the 23mm f2 for light weight and it's versatile focal length; and the 50mm f2 for maximum sharpness, light weight and shallow depth of field. I have the 18-55 and 55-200 if I need zoom but generally leave them at home. I had the 35mm f1.4 and 27mm f2.8 but chose to sell those two as didn't enjoy their focal length as much as the others, and they didn't offer anything extra for me over the lenses I kept. Trying the 35mm f2 lead me to buy the 23mm and 50mm f2, as really like that range for it's size, build, and AF performance.
This lens is the only reason I am staying with the fuji system... it is that good. It is not a technically perfect lens but it just works for my style of shooting
I have and love the F2 version but I‘ve been lusting for the f1.4 for way too long. I found two copies second hand for 299€ each at my local camera store. I think I‘m finally gonna buy. That is just a price too good to pass. Cheaper than what I paid for the f2 new!
Do you not find the optical viewfinder framing a bit small for a 35mm lens on the X-Pro3 as the optical viewfinder magnification does not adjust as it does on the X-Pro2? Also what do you think of the XF 23mm f/1.4?
I recently got a first generation one of these, I find the aperture and mainly the focus ring a bit loose (compared to lenses I've used with Sony cameras in the past). from what I can tell, functionally is fine, is it just age/ wear and tear, or is it just the way it is, or is it something I should be worried about?

Hey mattias! I’m buying an xh1 body and I was inquiring recommendations regarding best lenses to pair up with? Or best affordable lenses? For instance the Fuji 56mm f1.2 is almost $900 usa. Thank you
When I got my.X-T20, I got the ‘kit’,18-55mm and this lens, as I wanted a small fast prime to play with. It did nit disappoint. My first outing, just shooting things on my walk, blew me away. I did some flower shots at it’s minimal focus distance, which is,pretty close, with some nice speculators lights in the background, and manually focused on the stamen, which is really easy with focus peaking. Very shallow DOF, beautiful creamy bokeh, Beautiful colours. I was very happy. Downside is it’s focusing speed on the X-T20, which makes it not ideal for fleeting street scenes, it takes too long to find focus, and the moment has passed, or you get it half a second late. Fairly noisy I guess, but then it isn’t a video lens, so doesn’t bother me. The press-on rubber lens cap is pretty useless, it just falls off, so I don’t use it; if not stored front down in my camera bag, I have a small soft lens bag to hold it. I’ve found it a bit too tight for some of my street stuff though, and have found the 23mm more suitable FoV for my use, unless I want closer headshots with nice bokeh. An update with a modern focusing motor and perhaps WR would be nice, without the compromises of the snubnosed f2 versions, would be great. I don’t like relying on lens profiles to correct lens distortion in a prime lens, I’d rather have the great optics and faster Aperture of the 1.4 version.
Ciao Andrea, I just bought a Xpro1 and thinking about this lense. There is a used on here locally for sale, 300.-. Did you get yours? You like it? Cheers from Switzerland

Nice video, thank you. I'm trying an Xpro 2 at the moment but considering an Xpro3 instead. I love this lens - do you find it's useable with the Xpro 3 OVF magnification? or you end up using the EVF for it? The 35mm 1.4 seems to work very well with the Xpro2 2nd OVF magnification..... Thanks
It works well with the OVF as well.
The combo I really want 😍
Hey Mattias, thanks for the review and great photos! Would you recommend the xf 35mm f1.4 over the f2? It will be my very first lens for my very first camera which is the beautiful xpro3 dura black. Thanks!
Personally I would pick the f1.4 over the f2 every time.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thanks! Based on your experience, no need to worry that the lens is not wr? I wonder if it would be best a wr lens since the xpro3 is. Thank you!
The only fuji lens I ever had any weather issue with was the 35mm f2 WR. It leaked like a Swiss cheese and had to be returned.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter thanks! Great to know you never had issues with the f1.4. I plan to take it to the beach hoping not to worry too much about it. Perhaps the f2 unit you had was defective somehow
Hey mattias!
I’m buying an xh1 body and I was inquiring recommendations regarding best lenses to pair up with? Or best affordable lenses? For instance the Fuji 56mm f1.2 is almost $900 usa. Thank you
Checkout my Viltrox 85mm review series.
This is by far my favorite Fuji lens
Which one do you prefer? Black? Dura silver or dura black?
It’s the only lens I have right now for my X-Pro3. I’m not going to add any more at the moment.
I used it yesterday for an interview video a second angle camera in BW. The 4k footage was really really nice with the 35mm lens. I was impressed.
@@bobhanuman65 how much is the cost in rupees. did u buy online or at shop?
Awy not sure. I bought mine used for half price.
The 35 mm 1.4 f this lens is magic ... I like it so much 😀
does this lens fit an xt-3? Thx
Yes, all fuji X cameras.
Will you recommend it for XT2?
Am planning to purchase it for the xt2 too. Which one did u end up buying ?
@@SP-tp7pw i bought it 😊
Why do you recommend using it with a lense cap?
I just bought this lens. Thanks for the video
Satisfied with this lens even with X-M1 old body
Should i change my xf 35mm f2 to f1.4? 🤔🤔
Whats the camera in the thumbnail?
My first Fuji X lens, stupidly sold it. I'm going to go out and buy it again I think. Tired of waiting for the 33.
amazing video mathias
Thanks :)
I didnt know about the cap for the lens hood. Thats better than trying to put the cap on the lens with the hood on. It doesnt work.
Yeah the other one is a bit fiddly.
My favorite Fuji lens, a long with the 80mm macro
Is the autofocus better with the newer cameras?
A little.
How does it compare to the Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4?
Never used that so I can't say.
Another beautiful video! Thank you for your hard work (I know I'm a year behind on this).
Is the pro3 ovf frame for 35mm usable or to small?
Its very usable. I would say more usable than on the X-Pro2.
Hey Mattias! Do you recommend it on a x-pro1?
I haven't tried it on an X-Pro1 but it should work just fine.
Ciao Andrea, I just bought a Xpro1 and thinking about this lense. There is a used on here locally for sale, 300.-. Did you get yours? You like it?
Cheers from Switzerland
No surprise but I love this lens too! Great vid, as usual 😎
I love your reviews but I cannot judge any piece of gear by your photos. You could use a potato to shoot and still make amazing pictures! I really like your style.
That front element is worth the price of admission
Just got this lens an hour ago wow
i have it but i would go with 23mm f1.4
There I would go 23mm f2. My perfect line is 16 WR, 23 WR, 35 R, 56 R and 90 WR.
Why f2 for the 23?
Much bigger size and price difference as well as the WR.
Mattias Burling 16 1.4 or 2.8?
Same here I have 16 1.4 ,23f2, 35 1.4 and 90f2
Gunpowder makes everything look great
can you review your X-E2s?
Sorry, don't have it anymore.
As always, interesting and educational. :)
Xe1 or xe2? Is the 2 worth the cost?
My XE2s was $200 used in a store with warranty and an extra grip. Totally worth it imo.
Love it 😍
Mine too, bought one last weekend
this will be my next buy!
I hope you will enjoy it :)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter funny thing is, I was already on ebay today exploring options that don't involve the US import tax us poor Europeans are stuck with lately.
Lucky for us then that used gear is waay cheaper in Europe than the US :)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter will get mine early January. Coming from 50mm full frame it'll feel familiar 🤗
My only X lens that came with my X-E2, on a very tight budget.
It's served me wonderfully well in both event photography, portraiture and even landscape (despite the focal length). Amazing lens, great bokeh, as sharp as it needs and paired with an XTrans the colours are out of this world. Would recommend heartily.
And to think it's one of their first lenses in the mount.. begginers luck? ;)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Probably more buying from an awesome street photographer that severely undervalued his gear hahaha. This thing has been in three continents with him, and saw all sorts of nasty decay doing urbex with me. It's seen some shit :)
Nice video, please can you tell lens manufacturers especially Fuji, to give us an 18mm f1.2 lens I will be very grateful...
Would love to see a square lens hood for the 35mm F2
There are 3rd party Chinese ones on Amazon/ebay. It doesn’t look as good on the f2 imo.
XE-2s review coming soon 😳
Maybe, but that will be sometime late spring/summer of 2020.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter looking forward already Mattias, thanks 👍
Sold my f2 to get the f1.4 love that lens..
Okay Mattias, what is the name of the most photographed dog of all time?
Can't decide between 35 1.4 and 23 1.4 😭
I had the same doubt... in the end I took the 35 1.4 and the 23 f2.
in november i saw the xt1 video and 3 days after i bought it... then i saw this video and i bought the 35mm; i hope you would not make a video about the 18mm f2 (do it!!)
