Things that helped me resolve back acne. Benzoyl peroxide cleanser in shower, salicylic acid spray (Paula’s choice) after shower, cerave salicylic acid lotion, shower as soon as you finish working out, wash bras after one use, frequently wash your clothing especially gym clothes, wash your body after you wash out your conditioner, and use the Lysol laundry disinfectant when doing laundry (use as pre wash).
I bring some of my face products onto my shoulders and upper back (where I typically get the scarring). So like my vitamin c, ferulic acid, AHAs etc. Basically start adding some of the hyperpigmentation stuff you use on your face to your back! This has actually helps me a lot. I do it on my chest and some of my freckles from sun damage have gone away too
What I hate the most about my body acne - is that what works on my face doesn't work on my back and shoulders. And what works on my back and shoulders (it's acid) doesn't work on my chest! So I got like 3 different types of acne - on my face (retinol does the job for it), back and shoulders (acid) and chest (nothing helped so far).
Just gonna throw out that, for me, some of my back "acne" was actually folliculitis, which responds much better to soap containing zinc pyrithione. Definitely a derm can help you sort out exactly what's going on, but if acne products aren't helping your back, you may not have true acne. Luckily the lifestyle stuff pretty much helps with all of it!
Great summary. In my day, people did not talk about this, you were almost on your own. Glad to see at least some things have gotten better. Thank you both
For me, hair conditioner and some showering gels with pore-clogging ingredients were the biggest problem. I struggled with back acne for years and just by making sure these ingredients don't touch my skin it has improved so much. Salicylic acid also helped a lot.
Like Dr. Sha I’ve also struggled with back acne my whole life and I’ve learned what’s worked for me so whoever wants to listen LISTEN UP. Panoxyl or the CeraVe salicylic acid face wash is great to use after your regular soap app. and pls leave it on for 1-2 minutes. Then after the shower, use the salicylic sprays (non-fragranced and no witch hazel) if your acne is flared up. Mine isn’t right now so I use the ordinary glycolic acid in a spray bottle and that’s taken care of A LOT of acne scars and bumps and it’s made my whole body smooth. And most importantly hydrating your body after the spray with a non fragranced body lotion like Neutrogena hydro boost lotion or the vanicream lotion. For someone who is oily and acne prone, these two lotions have never broken me out and like your skin, hair, nails hydration is key to heal and soothe the body. So after using these products the lotion calms your skin and doesnt irritate it because of dryness or the products you’re using. I hope this helps for anybody who struggles with body acne! I wish I would’ve known these tips years ago lol (and p.s always wash your body after you wash your hair) ❤
I noticed that once I completely stopped eating Chipotle and Oreos, my back problems stopped. Especially the Chipotle!!! I read that Chipotle cooks all their food with Soy Oil, which triggers cystic acne. I instantly made that connection when I stopped eating those particular foods because once I started eating them again, the acne came back. Everyone’s body is different, but in my mind, this is what was causing the issue. It’s been going on 4 years since I removed those from my diet and I haven’t had a breakout on my back since. If you love Chipotle, I highly encourage you to take a break from it to see how your body reacts.
Processed, fried and spicy food in general is very triggering. If you eat lots of fish and green vegetables like spinach, bokchoi, cabbage etc it will help. Great that it works for you.
10 years ago I discovered that fabric softener in my laundry was a huge cause of back acne. Fixing that and using Phisoderm salicylic acid body wash fixed mine.
I just want to say, thank you so so much. I am unbelievably insecure about my back and rarely ever show it. This video has helped in more ways you can imagine.

I spray salicylic acid on my son's back after using the Ordinary's retinol oil. He also uses a benzoyl peroxide wash. His skin is super hearty, and it never seems to get irritated! I wear gloves so the retinol oil doesn't get all over my hands. It's working really well!

I think many people suffer from back acne and are not likely to share their experiences until they get older. I battled with this until I just stopped caring and only time made it go away (except the deep physical and early psychological scars). My dad never would have taken me to see a dermatologist or even a GP to have it treated, which is unfortunate because it really inhibited me when I was younger. As someone who suffer from body acne, I treat it like I do my face. Wash with medicated cleanser, alternate actives like retinol, aha/bha then moisturizer.
When I was pregnant I got HORRIBLE acne on my thighs of all places. Literally no reason what so ever, but it was awful. Wearing pants hurt. Gave birth, and it went away!
I did cupping for my back about 3mths ago....improved a lot and started using Neutrogena Grapefruit Clear salicylic Bodywash and apply Aveeno daily moisturizer to prevent it from returning....so far still works
I use Cerave SA Body Wash for Rough & Bumpy Skin, leave it on for about 5 mins (don't just put it on then immediately rinse off), then after showering I moisturize that area with Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion. (I might eventually look into trying their SA body lotion too.) Showering soon after sweating and washing sports bras after one use, as well as washing regular bras (after ~3 wears but more often if you sweat in it) make a huge difference. Also don't wear the same top to bed too many days in a row. I still get back acne, but I've found the pimples don't last nearly as long as they used to. They might flare up quickly but then be on their way a day or two later...but now I still gotta find a way to deal with the scarring. edit: I've also seen a couple of dermatologists say sulfur soap is good for body acne too.
1) wash bedsheet 1x per week 2) change pyjamas every night 3) shower after gym/ activities that cause you to sweat 4) after conditioner wash back and tie hair up 5) cleanser anti acne (benzoyl peroxide 4-10% or 2% salicylic acid) 6) salicylic acid spray 7) apply acne products gel … 8) (oral medication, doxycycline, saysara…) 9:17 Summary

I've been on low-dose Accutane (Zenatane) for almost 10 years now. Just 1 x40mg capsule once a week after an initial full strength course of treatment. It's been amazing at preventing further breakouts and controlling oil production without side effects. Highly recommend it if your doctor is on board with it. One word of caution, major interaction between Accutane and doxycycline, definitely don't take both!
doesnt that kill the oil glands? or permanently shrink them? i took 20mg daily x4 months... huge regret, my skin seems to have changed permanently, its more fragile and sensitive than pre-tane. I even developed scalp folliculitis when i came off the drug. i'd personally avoid at all costs.
Dial soap and bodywash worked for me! I have been prescribed sulfur products and panoxyl etc w/ no results. I looked at my dermatologist funny when he suggested dial. I hadn't used dial since I was living w/ my parents.
I have seen good results with salicylic acid soap, but there were still some reddish marks left by the spots. About 90% of the marks have disappeared since I started using kojic acid soap after the salicylic acid soap.
Thanks for bringing me back to my adolescence, guys. That orange Neutrogena bottle is the stuff of nightmares! (But seriously, this vid is super informative! 😉)
Thank you, I’m so glad to hear I’m actually doing all the right things atm! As an added “bonus”, I’ll be eating doxycycline for 2 months as an anti-malarial while I travel, had no idea it could help with my skin too! Almost excited to start the meds now 😂
@@miatazithis is a very late reply but yes! The doxycycline does make your skin a bit more sensitive to sun but as I was wearing high spf all the time anyway it didn’t matter much. My skin wasn’t breaking out even with constant sweating and not so great skincare.

Highly recommend using this product as the LAST THING YOU USE during a shower :) The mandelic is Brightening for scars while also being anti fungal, anti microbial, and anti bacterial with anti inflammatory properties! Thank for providing some items that I might can use to get the top layer skin to peel off and maybe the stuff can be uncovered.

And I pause the treatment periodically (especially arround summer vacation).
Thank you guys so very much for this video and I was very scared cause I didn't know what to do and after watching your video it help me come down and thank you again ....
Body acne is the worst. It has made me so self conscious especially at the gym. I constantly get asked if I am on steroids. I’ve tried literally everything i have probably spent thousands upon thousands of dollars between derms, skin care products, supplements you name it. I’ve found the thing that worked for me was a zinc supplement combined with a benzoyl peroxide wash 5%, leave it on for a couple minutes while showering. Then a topical treatment like a BHA lotion, benzoyl peroxide lotion or retinoid cream. I’ve tried all 3 however the retinoid cream seems to work the best. The Trifarotene retinoid cream had the least irritation as it specially targets the retinoic acid receptor gamma vs tretinoin
You guys are too cute! Great vid and loved your new lip repair one also! Is it bad to use one with hydrocortisone like Dr. Dan’s cortibalm? It really helped me with horribly chapped lips. Also this random one called babe glow, fragrance free, so good. Using tret at 50yrs old. Have had significant acne since 10!
I used this little towel looking thing that exfoliates the back when you scrub it then I used it to scrub my whole body with a acne soap bar then put the cream on afterwards it helped about 75%

Ive had cystic ance since I was 11, I'm 25 and still have this crap. I've done everything, changed what i drink, more water, and no dairy products. I use body wash with no artificial dyes and same with cleaning powder/liquid in the washing machine. I'm in a state of mind that isn't good for me, it just won't go away.
Hi! I love this channel! Please please do a review on anti grey hair serum ingredients effectiveness 🙏🏼 I’m having my first grey hair and I wonder if they actually works ❤
I haven't watched it all yet, but wanted to mention certain laundry detergents make me instantly break out on my back, arms and chest. Try switching to fragrance free one, or now we use just pure vinegar as our detergent.
I did Accutane. It cured the cystic acne that I would get everywhere. I've only had one cystic zit since that was durring a particularly bad bout of hormonal acne, but it was nowhere near the level of before and was gone in a few days. Even if not a 100% cure all, I dont regret any of it. It also oddly enough helped to diagnose the eczema on my chin and legs.
Unrelated to acne - treating broken capillaries with laser - I listened to one dermatologist saying that laser shrinks them and then you have to go back 2-3 times a year. I thought if the procedure coagulates them, why do you have to keep going back? Do you need to go back for the same ones you treated-like the same ones come back? I have ones that occurred from micro abrasion on my nose, so I’m not looking to do my whole face, just those…but the dermatologist I went to said, I need to do my whole face or it will look too white in that one area. I don’t want to necessarily do my whole face, and don’t want to have to keep going back.
My acne sadly is contributed to dairy products. The most impacting one being chocolate or sugars in general. As a latte lover I’ve had to make some changes and go for alternative coffee options. I eat chocolate every now and then but pay for it later.
I have a question. How to actually deal with acne open wounds? Like fresh wounds after it’s like break out. What should I apply on? Can I have the example of the products? I think I have been treating it wrong for all the time.
I would highly recommend pimple patches, also called hydrocolloid patches. They're small patches that adhere to the skin, and you leave them overnight. The patches protect the open wound from dirt, prevents picking, draws out the pus and fluid, and will help the wound heal much faster. There's a bunch of brands that make them: Hero, Rael, PanOxyl, Starface, Alba Botanica, etc.
I tried a salicylic acid wash on my face and back and it made both break out 10x worse. I have sensitive skin so I'll chalk it up to that, but that's not a one size fits all product😭
Can the next video be about proactive? I used it as an adolescence, years later after kids my acne returned and it worked. Why is proactive now vilified ?
Skin type: oily sensitive acne prone Skin concern: dark spots, scars due to close comedones, some acnes.. May you please try to suggest some good toner/essence/serum to fade away those dark spots? Weather:Humid here in India

What are your thoughts on the Stridex or Noxzema anti-blemish pads?
Derma Harmony Zinc Bar or Shampoo Bar and Differen Gel and Trentinon Micro .08% May help. Along with Smartskin Hypocloric Acid Spray may also help.
Please compare tretinoin vs tezarotin.. and which is better in which areas & for lifetime use ❤

Tea tree body wash is great for mild back acne!
Thanks for this. How do we get rid of scars left form the acne?
lasers/acid/needling
Sharing this with my teen son, Thanks! Could u do a video on Tinea Versa for my college son (it's on his torso, arms and some spots on cheek).
I eat chocolate every now and then but pay for it later.
why he looking at him like that 😂
Wish we could get benzoyl peroxide products easily in Ireland, it has to be prescribed by a doctor
Neutrogena wash or mask is also great if you use the mask option.
Dude, I hate wearing a tank at the gym because I have acne on my shoulder blades… I might as well hop on gear at this point lol

My arm Keratosis got worse when I started Venlafaxine. It also caused weight gain and spots over my stomach. It's frustrating.
@@bellasmith4321 Thank you :)
Unrelated question… Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield, should I be putting skincare on my eyelids as well?? I’ve heard both yes and no.
I’m mid 50s never heard of this but maybe they’ll do a video on it. FWIW I have no wrinkles.
The first guy is me when I accidentally pressed it with a chair 💀

Will this routine help with the acne scars left on back and upper arm as well?
Try retinoid gel and or laser treatments.
I tried a salicylic acid wash on my face and back and it made both break out 10x worse. I have sensitive skin so I'll chalk it up to that, but that's not a one size fits all product😭
Hello Doctors, is this applicable for butt acne as well?
Can the next video be about proactive? I used it as an adolescence, years later after kids my acne returned and it worked. Why is proactive now vilified ?
