Anyone wondering where this comes in on the leaderboard (which I may have forgotten to add in...) it's right below the Glenrothes 18yo

Cool Hoodie! Loved their first 2 albums. I met James on their Ride the Lightning tour in Boston back in the day.

Thanks John! The very early stuff was really great. Especially Ride the Lightning \\m//

Oh Dear. I repeat, Oh Dear. If you put Benromach 10 in this box it would probably be somewhere near the top of the leaderboard. The Balvenie 21 is so outrageously overpriced I haven't touched it in years. You are absolutely correct in what you say about bottling strength but to pay this kind of money for 40% is a rip-off, plain and simple. These days it's the 14 year Peat Week and 12 year Single Barrel. Everything else is beginners stuff or completely overpriced.

Young but very well made whisky I feel can be justified but this cannot. I'd be interested to hear what Balvenie would say if asked why this 21yo is so much more expensive than other 21yo whiskies...

Say what you will about the Balvenie 21 Port Wood finish.. The combination of smoothness, low abv and the delicious wine finish is what got me into whisky in the first place. My inlaw poured me a dram and said "try this". if it was something with a higher ABV or just more punch overall, it would have scared me off. If it was younger it would probably have too much bite to really get me interested (and erase all of the bad memories of bad whiskies I had tried so far in the 40 years of my life).
It was the perfect dram to absolutely draw me in. But yeah, in retrospect, it's too expensive for what it is and I wouldn't invest in a 40% abv bottle today.

Great story. It's interesting how most of us have a memory of a whisky that drew us in and grabbed our attention. And also interesting how often those whiskies are not even that good!
My 'light bulb moment' dram was The Speyside (Drumguish) 10yo. Really nothing special but it was enough to make me realise what whisky has to offer and provided the interest to try more.
This 21yo Balvenie isn't bad. Certainly better than that Drumguish! £200 though? Nah 😂

My first and only The Balvenie has spoiled me..
I found several bottles of the 15 single barrel...bottled in 2010 and one 2011...
I see all those 40s at my store and just pass...
Not a chance I would buy it..
    Cheers..
Manana amigo..siempre manana as we said in Mexico and Argentina ...always tomorrow...yikes.
They put these expensive drams in there and expect the customer to be impressed...
It makes you wonder who the marketing department is targeting..

I've had the 12yo single barrel. A very strange Balvenie as it's first fill bourbon matured so has almost none of the usual Balvenie style... I haven't tried the 15yo single cask though.
As for this 21yo.... young and well made I can defend... but 21yo and minimum strength I cannot!

      @@WhiskyLock I feel the same way...My 15 single barrels are 47.8%...
I am so glad I found these earlier bottles..before they switched over to sherry.
I am big sherry fan...But, I would never have missed these great bottles.
I am going to go buy a few bottles tomorrow.
I love the Craigallichie 13 I bought a few weeks ago..and there was one bottle left the other day.
I saw Glenkinchie 12 this morning and may grab one to have a lowland..
But, the 43% kind of turns me off...Of course, two of my favorites are 43..
Still looking for Glenlivet 18 43%...Never had a Glenlivet...
      Cheers

Why do they cripple aged whisky by reducing the ABV? Which then means they need to chill filter and colour! But if people buy it then what will stop them? Great notes again.

You hit the nail on the head. People are buying it (so far) so they don't need to change. This one really lets itself down and is horrendous value...
