    My Gran told me almost 40 yrs ago that the most important reason to make your oil candles with a layer of water (50/50 minimum, more is better!) was that if it got knocked over, the water splashing has a REAL chance of immed extinguishing the wick, as opposed to using ALL oil that can cause a nasty grease fire if you're unlucky enough that the wick doesn't go out immediately.

    I'm a progressive/liberal 74 year old woman but with all that is going on in the world, I've started to prep. Although I'm probably opposite to you in many of my beliefs, I absolutely love your sense of humor and appreciate your hints and advise. Thanks for the info you provide and for your great sense of humor.

      Just curious, if you're smart enough to prep, (and most liberals aren't) why are you still a liberal?
      Preppers are generally conservative.

    Got another Wranglerstar trick for you based on this one.
    Save your cardboard egg cartons, dryer lint, sawdust, and candle wax.
    Put dryer lint or sawdust into the cups on the egg carton and pour wax over them.
    When you need one cut it out from the egg carton and light it on fire.

      I've done something similar with old wax and dryer lint in Altoids tins... just rough a bit up and it lights up nicely it's perfect for getting a fire going in bad weather! I've been given a big bag of sawdust so I'm going to break into it and mix one up!! Great gift idea with recycled materials

    I have stored 50 cans of Crisco, you kno the giant cans from Sam's club, and those cheap tall candle sticks, you buy them, length based on your Crisco can, you just stick the candle stick in the middle of the Crisco can... And you've got a candle that will burn for 2 weeks straight, that's how long they go, 24-7 non stop for 2 weeks

    • @explorermike19

      If you haven't found out already, you will sadly discover that Crisco and other shortenings goes rancid. I would not want to have 50 cans of rancid Crisco sitting around. It stinks to Holy Hell.

    • @richardelliott9511
      @richardelliott9511 2 роки тому

      In my area the GW has caught on to this, you might do better at garage sales or even Walmart. Use birthday candles to rewick a jar candle. Just drill a hole in the wax, the same size as the bday candle and push the candle into the hole. It works best with upscale bday candles, not the cheapest ones and I wouldn't bother if the wax level is below 3/4 to 1/2 inch.

Thanks!

      Marc - just be careful not to use paraffin candle wax... Paraffin is a petroleum distillate & will eat your non-metallic zippers (any plastics & rubber for that matter!).
      *Best not to burn paraffin candles indoors at all! Choose soy, beeswax, coconut, palm or any mix of these (IF you enjoy breathing / your lungs & zippers).

    You can buy a yarn with a nylon center for the wick. You can dip it in hard wax to make a wick. Dip it more than 50x and you get a candle. You can buy paraffin and hardeners to make candles too.
    We also make impromptu candles in the Philippines when there's an unannounced power interruption. All you need is lots of rock salt, used cooking oil, a stick and cotton. Salt is used to prop up the stick and cotton wick. Oil is the fuel. Yes, we don't throw away used oil.

    Regarding waterproofing matches :- When dipping the wooden match in melted wax, after dipping the head of the match, then turn the match around and dip the other end as well. This means the entire match stick is covered in wax and totally waterproof. You do this because if you leave the match stick end uncovered, then water/moisture can soak into the wood and "migrate" up the wood fibers and ultimately damage the match tip from the inside out, negating the dipping of the wax head.

    Lead pencils are also excellent on zippers.
    Wick for oil candel. You can also use baby oil and mop strands or string. A can 90% opened bend over hole for wick. Coconut oil or sceted oils also work. As a kid we tried lots of stuff digging tunnels ( inspired by the great escape and viet cong lol in bush areas.) Cigar tubes make good "oil candels". Even rolled cheese wax onto wicks, not a good option really lol. Melts down ok though.

    Mixing candles like you did has it's bad parts. Many are sented, now you have all the different sents mixing. But if that is your biggest problem, you are in really good shape!! I clean out the cans from Vienna Sausage, and onions dip. They make good candles! I can take an old type beer opener make openings around the sides of one and a ice pick to put holes around the lower part for air to come in set a tea candle down in it light it put small can of beans or what ever on top if there is enough air coming in and a way for the CO to get out it will burn slower and not so hot but I'm will heat your food! The trick is to find ways to use things many times for different things! Next time you use French Onion Dip in a can, when you are done, clean out the can. Put it on the table in front of you and just look at it! I would be surprised if you don't find 20 things you can do with it! Heat water, make candle, something to set hot pan on to keep it up, some to put in the fire to put your pan on when cooking, the last can go on! Look at anything you put in the trash you can find many uses for them!

    You can use a candle to waterproof clothes and boots/shoes. First you rub the candle on the item, then you hold it near the fire so it "melts in". You can also use a candle and aluminium foil in combination with a poncho to keep you warm when it is cold and/or wet. The foil transports, conserves and distributes the heat better than the air so it gets hot way faster. It works like a small sauna or even as if you had a heater under the poncho. It`s best to keep you head outside so you don`t inhale all the fumes.

    A small to medium size candle placed in a metal coffee can or large fruit can will heat up a small space. Such as a car or small tent. Make sure you have a way to allow fresh air for ventilation. A small metal rack placed on top of the can and you can heat up a metal cup to get a warm beverage or melt snow in an emergency for drinking water.

    You can also use candles for heating, and cooking in a emergency for next to nothing. I made videos on doing just those things. All it takes are some really cheap tealight candles 9 to 12 and some foil and a glass plate for heating, add some type of rack ( Like a oven rack ), and some clothes pins and remove the foil for emergency cooking. Pretty easy.

    Another way to get the wax out of the jars is to pour boiling water into the jar, fill the jar to top. When the hot water hits the wax the wax melts and floats to top of the jar. If you then wait overnight the wax will become a solid piece of wax on top of the water.

    On you multi-colored candle where you combined all the candles, why didn't you just break the white candlestick and just insert it? Why pull the wick out just to try to hold the wick up in the new melt? I think it would be easier to get the half candlestick to stand up in it, and easier to do. Also, I buy candles by the armload from garage sales. They don't sell very good, and most people will sell piles of them for 25 cents to a dollar per pile. Especially if it's hot and they are slumping.

      I figured you already knew it, but thought I'd point it out for your subscribers. Yes, the garage sale thing got to be were I dedicated a whole cupboard to about $5 worth of candles and paraffin. 50-75 pounds worth. Hardly anyone wants to put them away after a garage sale, and will give them to you. I picked up 10-12 of the great big white church candles for a dollar. The ones that are about 12" tall and 3" across. Have a fine weekend.

  • @roddyfowler2234
    @roddyfowler2234 4 роки тому +2

    I have had very poor results from using wax on matches. When you first do it things work fine but try to store them for a year or so and you can't get them to light anymore. The heads tend to crumble like they've been wet. I no longer trust this method, especially if my life depended on it. I now use tiny Mylar bags to store a box or a book at a time, (yeah I store paper matches too). The drawback of this is that once you open it all bets are off. Better hope it doesn't rain before you use them all.

    That firestarter you made at the start of the video, using a paper towel and candle wax? I were taught a variation of it when I were in the scouts. It's basically some ripped up and rolled up old newspaper that's been soaked in some of the heated up, and thus liquid, candle wax.
