  • Heather Mac Donald rejoins High Noon podcast to discuss her critical book When Race Trumps Merit: How the Pursuit of Equity Sacrifices Excellence, Destroys Beauty, and Threatens Lives. Heather and Inez discuss how unfair racial preferences have jumped from the courtroom to private institutions, and how they’ve seriously undercut scientific progress and artistic accomplishment. They also talk about how the inability to speak frankly about group differences in culture or accomplishment endangers Americans of every color thanks to a police pullback.

This is dangerous for our society.. we're lowering academic standards to help black americans. we need someone to call this madness out, shine a light on it, reveal what is happening.

Yes, censorship is almost everywhere (kind of: "big brother is always watching you!")...
However, there is no other way out from this whole insanity!
      We must resist!...

We remember that U of North Carolina researchers in 2000 published a research study (discussed in The Guardian in the UK) that showed that Black teens have higher self-esteem than White teens. And that this unearned and overblown self-regard is based on skin color alone and it comes from their fellow Black peers and their family. In other words, from "The Black Community". Contrast this to the experience of Whites and Asians in the US, who are told that our skin color means absolutely nothing and that we had better study hard, haul ass, and stay out of trouble if we want to escape our lowborn origins and succeed in life for the long term. My high school friends in notoriously depressing Upstate New York in the 1980s needed this motivation and we ended up in places like Cornell and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Every child deserves an incentive to excel and advance, and telling them the truth of what exactly they need to do to escape a lowborn origin is what they need. They do NOT need an assurance that they are perfect and special the way they are! Necessity is and always will be the mother of effort.

She has to tow a difficult line between being disgusted with black crime & attitudes toward school, and showing empathy for their plight.

And in regards to the issue not being racism but being educational disparities: My parents were not allowed to move into their desired school district because of redlining. That district had a strong tax base and schools that were of the best top three schools in that city. What is that, except for racism preventing excelling of people of color?

Why should anyone but the founding stock's descendants enjoy the benefits of their ancestors' hard work? Expecting them to share shows a misunderstanding of human nature - It's just not how they work. The fact that they let anyone in at ALL is great benevolence, which they are NEVER credited with by anyone non-white. I see the same argument regarding social media platforms and the public square: It's a private company, go start your own; is it not the same thing?

RE Arts commentary: Joseph Bologne Chevalier de Saint George doesn't seem so mediocre ( ua-cam.com/video/kmiuh_OL2Zg/v-deo.html ), but she's right about the general problem of hyping ethnicity.

Individual action lags behind policy. Just because it might be put on the books to hire fairly (not make race a consideration) doesn't mean that people are following it. As an African American, I have experienced individual action not recognizing policy. I know I'm not the only one.
My biggest concern in all of the difficult conversations we have in this country is that we limit the problem to having only two sides-- there are rarely (if ever) only two sides. My next concern is that we often do not LISTEN when someone says their experience is something that the other doesn't want to hear. We have to, as a society, learn how to listen.

There are only 2 sides. Earn it and prove your merit or give unqualified or unearned opportunities to people just cuz they were born brown.
Guess which one works better 😂
