    Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Also don’t forget the value of time for those who wouldn’t have so much fun harvesting the metal haha. Thank for the info

    Excellent video bro! My buddy has one eye only as a few years back before these informative videos came out, he got battery acid in one eye and after a few months of trying to save it, lost it. Well done! Let’s hope your audiences heed your warnings!

      Wow...so sorry to hear about your friend. Although we love doing these things, we have to be really cautious around heat and acid. Thanks for the great reply!

    You are giving good advice. Recycle your batteries commercially then buy the lead you need.

    if you heat the lead paste with charcoal (carbon) you reduce the lead oxide paste in the plates and reform lead. That would increase the recovery rate of the battery and reduce waste you need to dispose of.

    Lead in Canada is about 6 bucks for a pound. I got 10 pounds out of my battery. Well worth it. Cost was baking powder, I didn't ruined my jeans or anything. I will dispose of my acid at the waste disposal site. So 10 pounds of lead cost me about a buck.

      So glad this worked out for you! We can still get lead around here for around $1 per pound. If it was as expensive as yours, I would still melt them down myself.

    It was the K-mart propane bottle for me. How old is that?

      I forgot about that....must be close to 20 years old. Can't remember when K-mart closed here. Thanks for watching!

    I would check more first but I think diluting down the acid with plain water would make it safe to put it in the drain. Some drain cleaner is very strong sulfuric acid. I found this quote with a 10 second search "Sulfuric acid is very simple to use and will unclog a drain within an hour, usually within seconds if it’s not completely plugged up. Sulfuric acid is safe to use in the sewer and septic system as it is naturally occurring. The most powerful form of acid available is 98%. We also offer a variety of other products that can be used in conjunction with our acid." I Save my baking soda for better uses.

      Yeah sulfuric acid drain cleaner is like 3x the concentration of what's in car batteries, it's like 30% vs 90-95%

      Those are great ideas to get free lead, plus the lead pipes and roof flashing is really soft lead which is great for melting down. Good job!

    I am waiting on pricing but a google search I did earlier indicated that the current price of clean lead ingots is around 7.50 a pound for a 25 pound ingot plus shipping. Hmm. those batteries are looking pretty good.

      All I am finding is priced $1.50 to $2.00 a pound locally. If you have it shipped the price really jumps up. Thanks for watching and your comment!

      @@adventureswithbill9825 I just got pricing back and they are a little over 2.00 a pound. Shipping would double that but I may be able to get a friend to pick it up for me. Much better than the mess of tearing apart a battery.

      Build a large wood/coal fire on a large flat piece of metal and throw the batteries directly onto the fire, after the fire burns out all of the lead including the red lead will be on the bottom where the metal is, extra props if you do it in a burn barrel so the lead doesn't leak out

    Those golf cart batteries weight ove 50 lbs, and thereas only 7 lbs of lead?

    • @adventureswithbill9825
      @adventureswithbill9825  Місяць тому

      Thank you. These batteries have thick cases, a lot of acid liquid, and other metals besides the lead inside them. When all is separated, only a small quantity of lead. In my opinion, it's not worth the time, danger and hassle to reclaim the lead.

    This can't be
    The lead which you buy can't be the same... something is changed

    • @adventureswithbill9825
      @adventureswithbill9825  Рік тому +2

      Thank you, but it exactly the same lead that you buy in ingot form for making fishing jigs or simlers, bullets, etc.

      I can tell you with 100% certainty that the lead is not the same. There are many different lead alloys used in the batteries. The positive plates will be a different alloy then the negative plates. Some alloys have higher calcium, tin, antimony, silver, aluminum and quite a few other elements in that list. The amounts of each will vary depending on the battery. I personally do tests throughout the day and add what is needed to make the alloy to the required levels for the plates. I also make the plates. I will usually work with around 125,000lbs -150,000Ibs of lead each day. I have been working with lead and making batteries for 25 years.

    protip, deal with the acid naked. that way, no clothes are ruined! (don't do this lol)
