This is such a cool jazz lick! You can play it over any minor chord and it has a very jazzy sound. It uses chromatic runs, approach patterns, arpeggios and triplets. I take you through it bit by bit and also show you the notation.
I advise transposing it to several keys in order to internalize it so you can use it in your own playing. I go through it in C minor, G minor and D minor - but you should continue round the circle of fifths and work it out in all 12 keys!

Learning by ear.... The skill we all want but can’t have.
I learned it today. I'm a total beginner and this is the first jazz riff I've ever learned. I feel so good, thank you so much!!!

Expected the lick, not disappointed because this is awesome
Great jazz lick for soloing!!! This can be used on major chords too. Just alter some of the notes, the flat 3 to a major 3, etc...
People are saying Harry Potter but I'm hearing Toy Story

(Just a personal checkpoint)
Got it. Do it several ways. cool lick.
Here is a lick. That I accidentally found about a year ago. It helps with dexterity and minor 3rds..useful in diminished chords. Also great way to hear what min 3rds sound like... Here it is.
I started doing a up down exercise at the piano. It is chromatic
Minor 3rds. It felt very awkward at first. I will describe it shortly.
The advantage was amazing. I can tell immediately what the Minor 3rds are. I usually just use my right hand. I know now the minor thirds are immediately. Here is the exercise ascending.. Fingers on R hand are 1 2 3 4 5. Thumb being 1. 2 is I index..3 is middle r.. .4 is ring. 5 is pinky.
C to Eb 1,3 Db to E 2,4 D to F 1,3 Eb to Gb 2,4 E to G 1,3
F to Ab 1,3 F# to Ab 2 ,4 G to Bb 1,3 Ab to B 2,4 A to C 1,3
B to D 2,4. This is only the ascending version.. Took awhile to write this out. Pianostyle100.
Thanks for the video! I never thought I could play jazz piano!
Sounds like the pool song on iMessage
It does
Lovely Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my work buddy got excellent success with it.
I just did an enclosure at the end. F E Eb (Db D F G Bb) Just part of the Lester Flatt bluegrass run..in parentheses above. He did it in G.. It came from the E minor blues scale. But in this case..I heard it and the Db is the b3 of Bb..So from the Db went to D F G Bb. Amazing how blues, and jazz fit
into bluegrass and vice versa.
At the end I played a rootless Bb6..in the right hand (D F G Bb)
the just moved the D and F and kept the and Bb. This chord as you know has got a lot of names Db dim 7...all min3s. I hit it twice then
back to the Bb6. Did some improv there. Im sure you know how that all sounds.
Thank you for showing me the jazz lick scale you are a great teacher now I got it greetings Pianist from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
I don't even play the piano yet i'm watching this at 3am
Lmao

You are dreaming about playing piano someday
Pretty good keyboard.. I use a Casio Ctk 4200. Its just 50 something keys..but no problem with this lick. Start with just humming along. I think UA-cam has a speed slower downer arrow. Don't think slower downer is what they use. lol.
This is very clear.. I'm taking this to practice tomorrow. You deserve 100 thousand viewers at least..I will try to share this video. I watched as you described each step of the lick. it was spot on. I thought that's a gminor7. That's what you said. Is this from any song? I've noticed that it's a very common trait of jazz artist like Herbie Hancock to play the minor 7 arpeggios against a related chord.
Thanks! No it's not from any particular song, just a very commonly used chord meaning you can use this lick in SO many different places! Yes you are spot on, the use of arpeggios in jazz in an extremely common trait... because it sounds so damn good!
@@Piano_Pig I made this comment 3 years ago and I looked down and it had 143 👍s. IDKY but
something must have struck a chord. Pianostyle💯😄.
Thx - this is the coolest lick here!
Thank you so much for the excellent description..Got it..Full speed. 3 years ago, I started learning Donna Lee. Learning DL in Ab was one of the.best things for my 🎹. Good!! One Application, please? Can you make a video with an example in a progression?
Best step by step tutorial on a solo.... Excellent
Nice lick, do you have any video explaining the choice of the notes? (I don't know, maybe something with particular scales) Not necessarily this lick, but another. It could help me to improvise my own lick.
Thanks
The coolest jazz lick is the LICC.
I know, I know. Been thinking about changing the title of this video lol
Each short phrase can make a chord by itself when played simultaneously i guess! Great lesson. Will try out on guitar.
Love the lick!!! Can you please do a lot more different looks like that for us thank you piano Pig you're the best
Videos like these always make me really want to learn music theory beyond my basic understanding, but I just don’t have the time or resources.
Sure you do! Just spend 5 mins every day learning something new and after 1 year you will have made some noticeable progress!
We'd like to have more Jazz licks like that one thank you very much piano Pig
If you dig through my videos you'll find plenty of licks in there 😀
that’s actually pretty clean
it really is a great lick... anyone who devotes himself to listen attentively to Jazz Recordings from the master... you can hear that everywhere
Omg I loved that tutorial!!!!, I learned faster than thought.

Awesome!
Thank you!!!
Very cool, thanks for sharing.
It's my pleasure! 😀
Whaaat this is too smooth for my piano
How about playing it in descending 5ths? From Cm7 to Fm7, and then to Bbm7... That would sound nice🌼
Thank you for a great lesson 😀
My pleasure :)
Can you please upload a tutorial for your intro chords? I love this little groove
Already have done! Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/x8J9CzSXrUE/v-deo.html

Thanks bro 😀
Muito Bom!
Muy buena clase!
thanks!
Thought pyrocynical was giving the tutorial. First time in the channel, loved it!!!
Beautiful
Getting it down. It reminds me of Donna Lee and some Bernie Hancocks works.
This young man has a very noble voice
Haha thank you!
Love this video. Thanks!
Wow, lovely.
0:29 sorry just trying to know where it starts
Thank you very much.
Wow prof. Very cool 😎
Yo this sounds so cool
Great lick. My only complaint is about the accidentals in your sheet. Do you not know what a sharp is? If it is an approach note from half step below - it cant be the same note with a flat... it should be a step below with a sharp. So not a Gb-Gnt, but F#-G. The same goes for other keys: C#-D(not Db-Dnat) etc
That was fantastic. You made it so easy to understand. Thank you. Some say that's not a lick. Explain lick please.
Nice one, thanks
No problem 👍
1:31 ahhh fur elise flashbacks
This is real good
I want to eventually play like this but I'm not sure where to begin. I just got my piano recently and was curious if there is anything I should learn before I figure lofi/ jazz? thanks. (btw I'm a beginner)
Learn your 251s and some jazz standards!
Buen video.Buen jazz...
Improv(e) every day!
Love this guy, great info and no BS
This is tight! Thank ya so mucho!
Very cool. Learned it. Thx.
Deadliest ckckck
I love it. Is there any way I can copy & paste the notes you have written so I won't have to pencil them in on paper? It doesn't wk for me when I try to copy the notes it on my computer.
you could try to use musescore or just make a screenshot
Wow really easy to learn and fun, although I don’t like the chord on the left hand
Amazing
How do you play that bottom chord nicely sorry I’m new to jazz
Thanks man,,,,i am studing your videos
pleeease.. much more of these really useful licks! :D
My only question is, how do you lick jazz?
sir i want more on this licks 😊
That was really nice and helpful, thanks!
My pleasure! Glad you found it useful :)
I would say this is more of a tightly knit set of three licks that make up a whole phrase rather than one lick. I wouldn’t put this whole thing into all 12 keys. Instead I would take one distinct part at a time.
Which key are You playing
Sir please tell the intro jazz chords which you play before the starting of the video ❤❤❤
I have a video of it on my channel, it's called 'PianoPig Intro Chords' 😁
@@Piano_Pig thank you very much sir
Niiiice.thank you.
That is really good video. One question can I play this any time I see a Cm7? It may depends on the context. In Bb Cm7 is the first degree. In other key Cm7 will be
another degree.
It should do since the lick is built primarily from chord tones, therefore as long as there is a Cm7 playing it should fit. You will have to experiment and find out though as I'm sure it would be possible to come up with a scenario where it doesn't work!
I'd just like to point out that this is nearly exactly what 'jazz legends' in movies are usually playing while being introduced
I've seen/heard it over used by Jazz greats constantly myself.
Click bait title but I decided to watch anyway. It's super cool indeed. And really great video. I'm gonna try to learn this, and I don't even play the piano. Thanks!
Hey bro!! Can you help me with E minor please... same Improvise please
rootless Cm9 = Eb maj7 if I'm not mistaken
It can function as either, but in this case I chose it to function as a Cm9.
Going to learn on guitar tonight. Very good to get the perspective of other instruments to avoid any fretboard ruts. Thanks. Cool as fuck.
Awesome!
Is there a tutorial for your intro in this video?
2:52 1:32 1:16 3:00 1:32 2:20 2:52 This is the best L I C C
Can you teach the music that starts in the intro of your video??
Already have :) ua-cam.com/video/x8J9CzSXrUE/v-deo.html
Well, I'm a guitar player, but am trying it out on guitar, but to my ears, when you don't play it in a jazz riff but in a different rhythmic pattern, it sounds very much like something J S Bach might have come up with.
Cool lick. Where did you get it from?
