This neo soul chord progression was inspired by the jazz standard 'Blue In Green'. It makes use of chord extensions to create big, thick textured chords. We look at how to use secondary dominants since they are very common in the neo soul / gospel genre.
I also show you some other tips and tricks that you can use to create your own neo soul chord progressions and start to understand how people such as Cory Henry and Robert Glasper sound like they do!

Who else just LOVES neo soul chords?? I think I need to make more videos like this :D
PianoPig i love these kinds of progression... Great one dude we want more of these for sure. Also please do a video on improvisation on these progressions. 😃
Yeah I really enjoyed making this video so I'm sure there will be more to come! Improvising over neo soul progressions - great suggestion :)
Damn! Dude where have u been all this while?? This is awesome ...love the neo soul videos ...keep em coming bro ...am so gonna subscribe to this channel!!
Good decision :) - There will be many more of this style video to come in the future!
We all love Neosoul, pls give us more, and be blessed.
it's always surprising when a chord sounds disgusting alone, but amazing in passing
Absolutely! This is the case with a lot of altered dominant chords, but they just sound SO good in context
Ryan Perrin if you find chords "disgusting" you must be very untalented lol
UnicornHorn This is such a toxic comment. Chords, actually can sound disgusting on their own, without context. The whole point is to resolve them... making music.
Maybe unicorn is tone deaf and can't perceive dissonance, that's really the only reason you wouldn't be able to hear a disgusting chord
UnicornHorn I can kinda see where you’re coming from but it’s not talent. I think when you hear enough chord patterns maybe specific to a genre, you start to automatically hear what chord will come next and thus it sounds less “disgusting”. I don’t know just my two cents
This guy looks as stoned as the presidents of mount rushmore
LOL bruh this killed me hahaha i was thinking the same thing SMDH
dude i just kicked my turtle laughing at this shit
One of his eyeballs appears to be bigger than the others. It gives him an off-kilter appearance.

This chord progression is such a staple of neo soul I wish we had an agreed upon name for it
Concise, fun, no "trying to be funny" or sounding nervous. Just the way I like my you tube's. Thanks
agree
neo soul is just random chords that make you go UUUUHH
😄😄👌🏽
I’m getting blue in green vibes as well and giant step vibes from this good progression
Thank you for this vid!!! I loved learning basic theory and taking it in a “classical” direction but jazz progressions have always evaded me! This helped explain so so much & very grateful 🙏🎼
I'm so in love with this music and everything you did. Also so clearly and simply taught...time to practice!
I've been learning about altered chords and then came across this video. Thanks, still not understanding it completely but I'm definitely in a better direction than I was before.
Love this! You're the first person to actually teach rather than confuse. Props and love to you!
Amazing and thank you again. Such a privilege to receive your depth of knowledge presented so effectively and succinctly 🙏🏻
I love this progression so much! It sounds so relaxing. That’s what smooth jazz is all about. Thank you for the lesson!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Thanks, finally someone who knows and takes the time to break it down. I've seen quite a few guys who seem to be just showing off, running those riffs, with no explanation. Thanks again.
Hands down most concise and clear lesson I've seen thank you
It's my pleasure!
Thank you! It is very clear and for me it was more elucidating than other neosoul video's. I can work with this.
I'm in my 3rd month of learning to play keyboards. You're showing some fairly complex stuff, but I'm getting it. I'm either becoming a better student than I thought, or you're a great teacher...or maybe both. Thanks for the good video.
Good stuff man! Keep up the good work, if you can understand this video after only playing for 3 months you're doing really well :)
Great exposition.....Now that we are back to playing at home. Thanks so much
Thank you so much! So many cool things to develop from this lesson.
Just found this, love it!... it had me vocal improvising over the end so easily! Must get on my Nord today!
Haha awesome! Glad you liked it 😀
Such a usefeul lesson. Never met so simple and cool in same time video tutorial on youtube. Thanks a lot!

More neo soul videos like this. Been looking for stuff like this for years! Thank you
This has helped my understanding of secondary dominants. Thanks so much! I've always understood what they were etc. but hearing your explanation as to why you were using them really drove the point home. You can read all day, but it only takes a few minutes of listening to someone who really understands it to make a huge difference.
Great to hear I've managed to help you're understanding of secondary dominants! They're really fun to play around with and can add so much interest to chord progressions 😀
Unutterably mind-blowing! Yes, beautifully explained. The challenge is trying to do this quickly without all the thinking time, and working out each note. I understand basic chord construction, but thinking beyond major sevenths, and ninths quickly is my challenge!
Brilliant lesson‼️Thanks for taking the time to explain the voicing in the left hand (something a lot of people don’t do) 👍
My pleasure!
blue and green is one of my favorites! Love your tutorials!
first few chords sound like Giant steps!
They do!
Makes Sense Looking at Giant steps...
I believe giant steps modulates through fourths. So very similar sound!
Facts
@@golos9 through fifths
Beginning of this video made me smile uncontrollably thank you
My pleasure! 😀
I’m not ready for this but it was fun to follow along. Stretching fingers. Great explanation! Thanks.
Thank you for your Open minder. I tried it and it sounds well!
This dude blinks like once every 3 minutes
Very good explanation. Great job.
I - V7 of IIIm - bIIIm - IIm - V7 of IV - IV - V(maj7)
I love the chord explanation, why you take out notes, etc 👌🏼👌🏼
Wonderful video!!!
Thanks a lot for the explanations!
Im a guitar player, and applying your techniques and voicings to guitar is so fresh and inspiring!
And finally someone who explains whats going on, such as explaining the dominant second as a passing chord, which made so much clear to me and opens up completely new dimensions of playing!!!
More!!!
Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed the video man! :)
I can hear the jazz influence in that chord progression. Really nice
thanks dude, you're the man bro, I just start to learn this stuff
Just wanted to say this was well put together as an educative video. You taught a section, reviewed over what we learned, and then taught the next step. Simplified the concept: CM-> Em. And provided examples. Thank you! :)
Thanks! Good to hear you enjoyed the video 😀

Love these chords! Thanks so much!
thanks for the video ! was very helpful to me !
i’ve learned things, great video, thanks!
Luv ur sound. R8ch, smooth and oh so neo soulful!
I do! Im practicing these in all the keys. That first chord is easy to remember. Just practice the lefthand, after that you add a major seventh chord on top starting from the 5th...
This makes more sense when thinking of it as the key of G, but starting at the IV chord (subdominant). Then that B-dominant is just the dominant of the minor parallel and that 11# of the C is included in the scale. Later modulating to F (D-minor) through chromatic movement, then back to G!
I don't see the first chord being in "c-major" either. It's obvious that the general gist is "start from G, go down a tone, play a trick to come back".
i was thinking the EXACT same thing
I went full on nerdy in a comment about this not being in C anything. It's E (melodic) minor. He says it's based on Blue in Green, which is in D minor. B7 altered is your dominant. E minor is your home chord. Everything else predominant shenanigans. The F is temporarily tonicized. D# minor is a tritone sub of A minor. It very nearly could have been a iii-vi-ii-V7-I progression, but the G minor is omitted. It works better that way given the final chord.
Yup! As soon as we see that Cmaj#11 we should assume the key is G major 🤷
Found my buddies here. The groove is actually in key of G, with 7-3-6-2-5 starting chord progression, modulated to F when he hit that Dmin(relative minor of F) then back to G major.
Im a base player so its kinda clear to me how it's baseline turnaround.
Just amazing! Thank you✨
Really cool melodies!!!
This is amazing man.
Thank you!
Dude you are such a massive inspiration 🙌 💯♥️♥️♥️
Please more! So much details on teaching that patern
