“Layla” was a song Clapton wrote about his forbidden love for the wife of his close friend George Harrison (she eventually became Clapton’s wife). The song was inspired by Clapton’s reading of the classic Persian unrequited love story, the epic poem Layla and Manjun. I would recommend to all watching Derek & The Dominos member Bobby Whitlock's YT channel... He is a fabulous man, very entertaining, has so many great stories of the 60's & 70's & is such a gifted musician & artist....
The second part of the song has always been my favorite part. And my appreciation of it increased when it was used in the film "Goodfellas", which added a sense of poignancy.
Duane played the slide. Well known for that. This was 1970. There would be no Derek Trucks without Duane, Derek & Duane Trucks were named after this band. Duane Trucks plays drums like their uncle Butch who was 1 of the drummers in the Allman Brothers. This is not Eric Clapton's first band. He was in the Yardbirds in the 60's. He has also been in John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and Blind Faith.
When this album first came out we finished listening and a buddy from down the street says "that's dieing and going to heaven music". One of my favorites, nearly wore out the l.p..
This whole album is great..2 of my favorite guitar players so glad Duane Allman and Clapton did this..that's Duane on slide. Clapton tried to get Duane to leave the Brothers and join him but nope he stuck with his Brothers thank God! Nice reaction..Thanks ✌️
Eric Clapton joined the Yardbirds in 1963, and left to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1965. Then after a famous album he co-founded the group Cream in 1966. This only lasted a couple of years, and Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos in 1970. Duane Allman was guest guitarist on the Dominos first album. Derek Trucks, nephew of Butch, Allman Bros drummer, was named after the group, and later filled Duane Allman's slide guitar role in the Allman Bros. in the 1980's. Then Clapton had Derek tour with him, and they would play songs from the Layla album, with Derek playing Duane's original parts.
the Band was Eric Clapton and Duane Allman on guitars......Bobby whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon on Keys, Bass and drums respectively.....who came with Eric after touring with Bonnie and Delaney and also Joe Cocker on the mad dogs and englishmen album and tour.
The best way to recap this song is Claptons MTV Unplugged slow version on accoustic years later - that was the way he envisioned the song - a love song. But Clapton and the Dominoes just came from seeing an Allman Brothers concert - he invited them back to the studio where the Dominoes were recording - they were jamming blues - Eric played this song, Duane came up with an opening lick to start the song off and speed it up - and Lalyla the rock version was born. It finally slows after the keyboards with Duanes slide play just sithering along thru the song. Clapton asked Duane at this point to join his band in Nov. 1970 - Duane said nope I got my own band - and 6 months later in 1971 ABB Fillmore East came out and shook everyone up. A few months later Duane was dead. Clapton started to pick up the slide just a little after hearing Duane. Quite a whirlwind.
I know you guys like the Allman Brothers, so the guy playing the insanely good slide guitar on this song is Duane Allman. He’s on some of the other songs on this album, my favorite being an incredibly good bluesy Key To The Highway.
So, Duane walks into the studio and hears the piano outro being worked out, and decides they need a little string accompaniment, and picks up his guitar and slide and tells them to keep going.
"Kudos!" for reacting to "Layla" (1970) Gentlemen. This whole album is a masterpiece. PS: Also think "Goodfellas" since it was a main track on that movie as well.
There's quite a story with this song, below its noted that Clapton wrote this about his best friend's wife. However, the second part with the piano is credited to Jim Gordon, the drummer in the band. He sat down in the studio and started playing the piano part and it was decided to add it to the final mix. He has songwriting credits but the piano melody was actually written by his girlfriend at the time, Rita Coolidge. I believe Bobby Whitlock, keyboardist in the Dominos, also had a part in writing the song. All of the members of The Dominos were part of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, an incredible group of musicians. Clapton played with them as did George Harrison, Dave Mason, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge and Duane Allman. Delaney Bramlett produced Eric Clapton's first solo album and all of the Delaney and Bonnie and Friends band played on his debut album. Delaney and Bonnie's music is incredible and really needs to be brought to youTuber's attention! Great reaction y'all!
Drummer Jim Gordon contributed the piano part. He had been working on a song with singer Rita Coolidge and they had come up with this on the keyboard. It ended up in Layla.
There is a controversy over who wrote the piano part. Bandmate Bobby Whitlock claimed he was helping Jim Gordon and his then girlfriend, pianist and singer Rita Coolidge, work on a song called "Time". Bobby Whitlock claimed Rita Coolidge should have had credit because the melody of the song Coolidge and Gordon were working on was 'lifted' and became that piano part. Apparently Graham Nash (of Crosby Still and Nash) has made a similar claim. Rita Coolidge also claims she wrote the piano coda. You can find plenty of stuff about this by searching for the three names: _"Layla piano melody Jim Gordon Rita Coolidge Bobby Whitlock"_ Best Wishes. ☮ Or look for _Why didn't Rita Coolidge sue Eric Clapton for removing the words to her song "Time" and turning it into a piano solo in his song "Layla"?_
Recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, Flo-Rida. Duane Allman, whose slide guitar makes the song (despite what Bobby Whitlock later said in his autobiography), had recorded there with The Allman Brothers Band, so he was invited to join the Derek & The Dominos project that Clapton wanted to do there with members of Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett's touring band. The piano cadenza was played by Jim Gordon, the drummer, who later on killed his own mother and is currently serving a life sentence in a California penitentiary. Bobby Whitlock, the keyboardist, hated that Gordon usurped his place in the band for that very important section of the title track. The piano interlude was supposedly written by Jim Gordon but Rita Coolidge, backup singer deluxe and the subject of Leon Russell's "Delta Lady," claims she wrote it during the time she and Gordon were co-habiting. There was never a second album released by this group because Clapton withdrew from his career to try and kick his heroin addiction. He returned after a couple of years later as a solo act.
Duane Allman played slide guitar on this track as he did in his own band, The Allman Brothers Band. The "Layla" album could be called The Definitive Use Of The Electric Guitar in The Blues/Rock Format"... because it is. Give "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" or "Key To The Highway" a listen and you'll know what I mean.
Wow, another great reaction! I sure enjoy you reviewing classic rock. It's fun seeing which parts stand out to you, and your observations about instruments, key and rhythm changes, etc. I never noticed the sitcom similarity. I guess it's some consolation that the sitcoms imitated Clapton. Rock on!
1970, group was guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon and Duane Allman from the allman Bothers was on this album as well!
I saw Derek and the Dominos playing in Norwich (UK) in October 1970, just a couple of weeks before they recorded Live (at the Filmore East). We waited for about two hours, chatting up the boys until D+D arrived, with many apologies from Eric and a memorable rendition of Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? They were on top form, and now I know had just recorded Layla the previous month in Florida. But Duane didn't come back over to England with them, so I didn't see him. When the album (Layla) came out we just played it over and over throughout one weekend - just couldn't get enough. D+D are accomplished but the genius is Duane Allman; his guitar floats over the others like an angel who has dropped in to share his wonder ...so glad you are hearing this now
What a great album! Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is among the top 5 double albums (studio only) of all time IMHO. For what it's worth, I think the others (not in any particular order) are Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti; Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street; Chicago Chicago Transit Authority; and Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland. BTW, that's Duane Allman on slide guitar in this song!
Derek and the Dominos was a short-lived English-American blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon. Peace out.
I've seen several people mentioned Jim Gordon in the comments he played the piano on this song and co-wrote it. Still receives royalties, unfortunately he received those royalties while being incarcerated in the California penal system for the mentally insane after killing his mother. He also played the drums on Harry Nilson's jumping to the fire song you guys should give that a try.
Gordon, of course, is the legendary drummer and most sought after sessionist of his day- his list of credits is unmatched throughout rock's greatest period.
No, Eric Started much earlier in England…Yardbirds, Jon Mayall and blues breakers. Started this to avoid his name and just be a band. He had met Duane Allman and they fell in bro’love. You will not find a better album. All musicians are fantastic. Eric and Duane are magical. Duane’s weeping slide guitar on Layla is epic. Key to the Highway, have you ever loved a woman…why does love have to be so sad is EC and Duane shredding it. Enjoy!!!
The song Key To The Highway is a CLASSIC from this same album. It starts really funny because it was just a practice/jam session with Eric and Duane who came back from lunch. As they walked to their studio they passed a studio where Sam The Sham was recording and he was doing Key To The Highway. They went into the studio and started playing it. When the engineer Tom Dowd, I believe, walked into the control room and heard it he realized the tape wasn't running and started it. That's why the beginning of the song in kind of like a fade in intro. THEY NAIL THE SONG.
Eric Clapton started in the Yardbirds 1963, then John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers 1965, Cream 1966, Blind Faith 1969, he went solo 1970, started Derek and the Dominos 1970 (attempt to hide from the spotlight) and then solo again after a break for a few years.
I saw Eric “GOD” Clapton Live at the Syracuse Carrier Dome. This song nearly knocked the walls down it was so awesome. A Legend among Legends in the history of music.
Patty Boyd inspired this song and George Harrison's songs "I Need You", "If I Needed Someone", "Something" and "For You Blue", and other Clapton's songs "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Wonderful Tonight". She was way more than a muse.
You'd figure for one woman to be able to inspire such incredible music from two great musicians, she must have been really something. Men dont write that s*** unless they feel it deep and got it bad. Three of the greatest songs in rock history, all about the same woman? Man, she must have been something.....
Clapton did a second classic version of this song on mtv’s “unplugged” that was totally differen, much more chilled out, but equally loved by fans (to me a more enjoyable listen)
Cool fact ,the back up singer and key board player Bobby Whitlock,,, from Memphis,, has a channel on you tube Bobby and Coco Carmel.'. He has told many stories about his time in the band .
When Clapton was in Cream he heard the Band and was blown away by them, decided he wasn’t interested in what he was doing with Cream anymore. Left and eventually joined with Delaney & Bonnie playing more country-ish music then eventually produced this album. Really a masterpiece in my book! Great choice guys & another hit reaction!
I saw Clapton when he was with Blind Faith in 1969 and Delaney and Bonnie were on tour with them. Previous to Blind Faith playing the headlining set Clapton came out and played on some songs during Delaney and Bonnie's set.
@@coinneachmaclellan3121 saw show where Bonnie says Eric was shy as lead singer. It had footage of Bobby NOT taking the microphone so Eric had to step up. Bonnie narrated it. Lotta good music we're talking about!!! Keep on Rockin'
Jim Gordon the drummer played the Piano part. The record company were distraught that Eric Clapton called the group Derek and the Dominoes. They issued badges that said "Derek is Eric".
The main riff and the slide are Duane Allman. Duane played on most of the songs from the album which is a classic!! The slide guitar is amazing all throughout but during the piano parts is so hauntingly beautiful!!
Duanne Allman, and bassist Barry Oakley, just a side project , with a wandering Eric Clapton, Gregg Allman on piano....the Family tree of musicians Clapton played with for past 50 years, should be examined. Cream, Blind Faith, Traffic Derek Dominoes, also invited into Abbey Road sessions by Goerge Harrison, plus all the solo records, and collaborations with BB King, Robert Cray, Billy Preston...again the musical family tree of Clapton is unmatched.
Hey guys, been watching your reactions for a few weeks now. Great job. Like many of your viewers I thoroughly enjoy watching younger generations digging on the music I grew up on. "Derek" is the great artist and guitarist "Eric" Clapton. The Dominoes are some fellow musicians. It began as a joke, until they wrote and recorded one of the most iconic Rock Ballads of all time.

Duane Allman is on slide and he is on most of the album except for the first three songs. More interesting factoids to add to those of everybody else here (you can tell this is a beloved album by everybody chiming in). The band Derek and the Dominos was formed out of musicians that played together on George Harrison's first post-Beatles solo album All Things Must Pass, obviously. The inclusion of Duane Allman was not planned and just by happy accident. D&theDs were in Miami to record, Allman was in town playing a charity concert in a park (I believe), the album producer or engineer knew Allman (maybe Bobbie Whitlock, too, I don't remember), and Clapton wanted to meet this Allman slide-player guy ever since hearing him play on Wilson Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude." Clapton went to see Allman perform live, invited him to the studio, and the long outro with the piano and dueling guitars just grew out of a jam between the two. Clapton originally didn't like the piano section, but it was Allman's playing slide over it that changed his mind.
I'd have to research it but pretty sure this is Clapton on his 335 thru a small Tweed, Champ or similar. But the thing about this song is it captures musically the total love a man can feel for a woman.
Peaches and Diesel- Slow hand album- instrumental- Eric Clapton - solo. Saw him live 4 times. My ears were not the same after him, facts. I felt that guitar take my soul for a whole song - seriously ❤️🎶🔥
I had the great good fortune to see them at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in December of 1970... This is, maybe, the most perfect album in the history of Rock & Roll... Also, that slide s Duane Allman...
The piano part of the song was used to great effect by Martin Scorcese in "Goodfellas", giving the movie and story a wistful, melancholy feel that things for Henry Hill and the crew were going downhill, the beginning of the end for that life and the people he once knew... Duane Allman was a fantastic player
"Derek is Eric" -was the answer EVERYBODY found out when this was released. I have Lived, Loved, and Aged along with this album. I was "going steady" ( lol) with a guy in Vietnam at this time, but met my future husband -then when Ray got back from Vietnam--I had to decided between the two. So LAYLA is near+dear to my heart. The INTENSITY of this album matched the INTENSITY of MY LIFE!! BELL BOTTOM BLUES another great song. Not a bad one on here. We just dropped the needle and played from start to the end. Also love Thorn Tree in the Garden. Probably my ALL TIME FAVORITE ALBUM. But that's because it's PART of my Heart!❤ "Have You Ever Loved a Woman"...umm-humm. Eric was kinda hiding out of the spotlight with Bonnie & Delany- they are the ones who got Eric to SING!! He was too shy to be the lead vocal. Then Duane Allman came & played with them. Thus Derek & the Domino's were born. Will suggest other songs when I look thru my Playlist. I've been blessed to see EC 6 times! Once with Steve Winwood-they played songs from earlier times of Blind Faith. Thanks for reacting to this...and many more to come👍🏻💯🎸👌🏼👏👏👏 Check out Delany & Bonnie on Tour with Eric Clapton LP. It's worth you also checking out some classic original 'Fleetwood Mac', the band started by another great guitar legend Peter Green. This first incarnation of the famous band is totally different to the later second version of Fleetwood Mac (also excellent of course), 'Black Magic Woman' (which was covered by Carlos Santana); "I need your love so bad" (full/extended version); Oh Well (pts 1 &2); 'Man of the World'; plus the absolutely beautiful instrumental - 'Albatross'. All worth a listen, to name be a few. [Btw - the one and only B B King loved Peter Green's playing and famously said, he was the only guitarist he listened to that could give him cold sweats].

👍
You guys should look up this documentary. The man who put Clapton and Duane together.
Mastermind Behind "Layla" - Tom Dowd and the Language of Music
There's a video on YT. Clip of Tom telling the Duane meeting Eric tale, and deconstructing Layla on the mixing board. Tom is a fascinating character.
Eric Clapton and the late Great Duane Allman playing slide....awesome album...
You can find plenty of stuff about this by searching for the three names:
_"Layla piano melody Jim Gordon Rita Coolidge Bobby Whitlock"_
Best Wishes. ☮
Or look for _Why didn't Rita Coolidge sue Eric Clapton for removing the words to her song "Time" and turning it into a piano solo in his song "Layla"?_
Jim Gordon - now there is sad story
@@kathyrams terrible story
He returned after a couple of years later as a solo act.
you can feel his love for her so strongly in both parts of the song.
Eric Clapton & Duane Allman , 2 Legends at the top of their game ..... 'nuf said .
For a completely diffferent jazzy version, Clapton does this on MTV Unplugged.
Duane Allman on slide guitar. Bell Bottom Blues is a must listen!
Brings me directly back to my amazing youth.
That weeping guitar you hear is none other than the late great Duane Allman
I saw Derek and the Dominos playing in Norwich (UK) in October 1970, just a couple of weeks before they recorded Live (at the Filmore East). We waited for about two hours, chatting up the boys until D+D arrived, with many apologies from Eric and a memorable rendition of Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? They were on top form, and now I know had just recorded Layla the previous month in Florida. But Duane didn't come back over to England with them, so I didn't see him.
When the album (Layla) came out we just played it over and over throughout one weekend - just couldn't get enough. D+D are accomplished but the genius is Duane Allman; his guitar floats over the others like an angel who has dropped in to share his wonder ...so glad you are hearing this now
Great reaction! Please check out Bell Bottom Blues by Derek and the Dominoes and Eric Clapton's version of I Shot the Sheriff. Thanks!
Early Clapton is in the Yardbirds and Cream. Both very worthy of you're exploration.
The entire album is great in my opinion. One of my all time favorite albums. The slide guitar on the back ground is Duane Allman!
Derek and the Dominos was a short-lived English-American blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon. Peace out.
The second half of this song where the piano comes in, is my favorite part of this song… man they don’t make music like this anymore
That beautiful slide in the background at the end of the song is Duane Allman doing his thing!
This is right up there with the best rock songs of all time.
Enjoy!!!
If you listen closely, you can hear Derek Trucks being born
The song Key To The Highway is a CLASSIC from this same album. It starts really funny because it was just a practice/jam session with Eric and Duane who came back from lunch. As they walked to their studio they passed a studio where Sam The Sham was recording and he was doing Key To The Highway. They went into the studio and started playing it. When the engineer Tom Dowd, I believe, walked into the control room and heard it he realized the tape wasn't running and started it. That's why the beginning of the song in kind of like a fade in intro. THEY NAIL THE SONG.
Slow hand at his best Clapton is a god ❤
Eric Clapton started in the Yardbirds 1963, then John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers 1965, Cream 1966, Blind Faith 1969, he went solo 1970, started Derek and the Dominos 1970 (attempt to hide from the spotlight) and then solo again after a break for a few years.
I saw Eric “GOD” Clapton Live at the Syracuse Carrier Dome. This song nearly knocked the walls down it was so awesome. A Legend among Legends in the history of music.
That's the GOAT of slide guitar, the man Duane Allman playing with Eric on this song.
Ronnie Wood said he wanted/almost married her too! Damn girl!!
FYYYYYYYRRRRRRR, BANGERRRRR GUYS!!! 😊 THIS WHOLE 70 ALBUM ( LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS ) IS AWESOME 💯
Clapton did a second classic version of this song on mtv’s “unplugged” that was totally differen, much more chilled out, but equally loved by fans (to me a more enjoyable listen)
One of the greatest songs ever recorded!
Absolutely!
Love this! From either the 3:10 mark or the 3:30 mark is gonna be my outro at my Funeral 🎶 this is how I'm gonna exit! ✌️ ☮️ ❤️🎶
Simply put.....Layla Is a Love Song!
Cool fact ,the back up singer and key board player Bobby Whitlock,,, from Memphis,, has a channel on you tube Bobby and Coco Carmel.'. He has told many stories about his time in the band .
Bell bottom blues : we’ll surely meet again
This album was in everyone's music collection it seemed. Also got major radio play--- the entire piece -- never got cut off like some did ❤️💔💐😍🥹
When Clapton was in Cream he heard the Band and was blown away by them, decided he wasn’t interested in what he was doing with Cream anymore.

When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen so stiff it took them three days to thaw him out for the autopsy
Great album....its a classic
Jim Gordon the drummer played the Piano part. The record company were distraught that Eric Clapton called the group Derek and the Dominoes. They issued badges that said "Derek is Eric".
The main riff and the slide are Duane Allman. Duane played on most of the songs from the album which is a classic!! The slide guitar is amazing all throughout but during the piano parts is so hauntingly beautiful!!
This is from 1970. Love this album; so amazing. Please also check out "Key to the Highway" and "Bellbottom Blues."
When it comes to Eric, most reactors I’ve noticed stick with his radio play music. To really appreciate him, watching him play live is a must. His music is one of the deepest rabbit holes you can get stuck in. I think these two songs are the best way to give you a little taste…

(sound is a little out of sync but it’s about the only version of this particular performance left. Written by Robert Johnson in 1938) An absolutely incredible performance by all involved!

Duane allman on the slide…man I miss this shit. Such great musicians at a time when America was just free. No phones or computers…just able to create. Great times.
"Derek" is the great artist and guitarist "Eric" Clapton. The Dominoes are some fellow musicians. It began as a joke, until they wrote and recorded one of the most iconic Rock Ballads of all time.
D, for Duane. And Eric for Clapton. Derek.
Guys check out The Allman Brothers….You Don’t Love Me from the Fillmore East Album ✌️
Eric's lick, Eric's voice, Eric's blues.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band released Layla Revisited last year, playing the entire album live with Trey Anastasio ....fantastic arrangement with the whole 13 piece band
Duane Allman is on slide and he is on most of the album except for the first three songs. Eric came to an Allman Brothers show while he was recording that album and asked Dwayne to play on the album and later tried to get him to join the band but tragically Dwayne died shortly after the album was recorded
Also at the end of the song the sound you hear. Those are called butterflies Duane Allman is the only person I know of that could do it
Bell Bottom Blues…same album. Great song also.
I like you guys. You understand music.
To me, this song is "Saturday" followed by "Sunday."

Absolutely love your show brilliant.
Thank you for watching!!
Thanks for reacting to this...and many more to come👍🏻💯🎸👌🏼👏👏👏
Check out Delany & Bonnie on Tour with Eric Clapton LP. "Got To Get Better in a Little While" + "Only You Know+I Know "🎶🎵🎶🎸🔥🔥🔥 ❤️💖💘
It's worth you also checking out some classic original 'Fleetwood Mac', the band started by another great guitar legend Peter Green.
This first incarnation of the famous band is totally different to the later second version of Fleetwood Mac (also excellent of course),
'Black Magic Woman' (which was covered by Carlos Santana); "I need your love so bad" (full/extended version); Oh Well (pts 1 &2); 'Man of the World'; plus the absolutely beautiful instrumental - 'Albatross'. All worth a listen, to name be a few.
[Btw - the one and only B B King loved Peter Green's playing and famously said, he was the only guitarist he listened to that could give him cold sweats].
