seems like all my old gotta restyle into platform shoes...btw platform shoes is expensive...this is good alternative...love it
Thank you. I made a new pair using two inch EVA foam from TNT cosplay supply. tntcosplaysupply.com/product/extra-thick-eva-foam/
Ladies and gentlemen, I ran a boot and shoe repair shop for 5 years. That very same EVA Foam we in the shoe industry call soling crepe. It literally is used in making and repairing shoes. If you are worried about it not functioning well you can always contact cement some kind of other soling material on the bottom of them. Crock are basically nothing but EVA foam injection molded. Some kind of dense neoprene rubber or thin plastic floor matting for non-skid should work.
I wonder if you've ever replaced the polyurethane midsoles on hiking boots. I've got a couple pairs where the mid-soles rotted out; they're probably 15 years old and were sitting in boxes but they just too old. Ever come across something like that? Most suggestions seem to involve throwing out the boots as "typically" they're considered unrepairable.
@@bruceshaw8646 Did you ever gat an answer to this? I'm in the same boat, gonna give it a try.
acetone in an oil can you can actually remove the soles on shoes. I ran an boot and shoe repair shop for 5 years and am willing to answer technical questions about shoes/hoots. If you can get it Barge cement is what is used in shoe repair and works very well on all forms of EVA foam as that is what the soft soling crepe is made out of.

could you glue eva foam directly to leather/ pleather?
@@darrenellis165 Of course, the insole of a boot is leather and contact cement works on both.
so mix acetone with an oil and then apply?
@@neonblkhole No, the oil can is for spraying the acetone directly on the shoe NO oil in it.
Didn't you mean PLATFOAM shoes? Eh? I'll leave now...
Ha ha well played sir.
Great tutorial, but for extra stability I would lift the inserts of the the boots and screw down some 3 to 4 inch flat top wood screws. 3 minimal, one dead center back of heel, and two on each side of the boot as far forward as you can get. If the the inserts can't be lifted, screw right through it and just add some store bought foam padding inserts on top.
@@sisterstars8972 Yeah the one's with the real sharp points and threads. And of course flat on top. They're usually black or gray.
I'd use a washer with the screw to add some further surface area to the screw head, so that it doesn't pull through. Also make a hole in the upper shoe to screw as deeply towards the mid-toe area as you can. I think Evil ted did this in another video
You answered the question I was about to ask! I’m making a pair now, and I feel like screws would definitely add some extra stability and also make me feel more secure wearing them.
@@svaughan41 You most definitely will get stability and security. Let me know when your done, how it went.
wont the foam squish over time and flatten
Scumbigula -use flip flops instead
you can buy hard foam
I would probably use like the rubber stuff and try to layer that... Im no shoe technician though so idk if it works
@@no.2MCRfan what rubber stuff?
ayy im going to do this with my old converse, you can add black tape to them if you dont want people to see the foam, i love platform shoes not only because they make you taller but also because of the apperance
This is awesome!!! So good for short people like myself HAHA
Glad it works for you
I needed this video, for my KISS costume.
This is perfect! Been wanting to do this for a while, but I was intimidated with the previous video. This looks great! Can't wait to make my own :)
COOL! I loved your older video. This is a huge improvement. I'm working on a Paul Stanley costume. This looks like a very comfortable solution. Rock on!
Thank you. I working on making the next video better than the last.
Christopher Soprano sculptor How did that work out? Were they sturdy?
(I’m working on a SpaceMan costume)
THANK YOU!!! I watched your last video on this, but this one seems MUCH BETTER
Thank you.
ted you so awesome your one of the reason I love making props so much I'm starting university in September to do propmaking and special effects
Thank you for watching and subscribing
Love your videos! I did find instead of using a sharp knife to cut clean seams i cut just outside my lines and belt sand them. Seems to work pretty great. :D
This is so helpful. I'm about to DIY so many shoes
Thank You Evil Ted Smith
Thank you for watching and for your support!
hell yeah evil ted
Thank you.
Now you're cooking with grease!! The wood was a good start. Also, when putting the screws in the boots, take the insoles out first then put insoles and then a nice gel insert for added comfort. You'll just want to put two screws in for good measure. One screw at the heel and ine as close to the toe as possible without having to cut the toes if the boot. Other than that, you are doing an amazing job. (I was a 90's club kid, I used to wear 20 inch platform sneakers to parties.) If you can find a firmer foam,(like little paddle boards) it would be more stable.
wow awesome Ted..
Glad you like it.
You're right. this is much gooder. Thx bro
Happy to help!
Really cool! Thanks :)
brilliant☺ I like it Ted
I'm glad you like it.
Yes! So glad you revisited these! My friends have been wanting some platforms and the wood was going to be a bit difficult. (I don't have a saw.) You're the best Evil Ted (:
Yeah sorry about that. This is way easier.
you're a legend! thank u!
You're welcome, and thank you for watching.
Do these compress after a day of walking on them? I would be walking around a con for hours 😬
On softer foam yes. I remade them with EVA foam that works better.
@@EvilTedSmith would foam floor mats compress or would those work similar to EVA foam? I like the colors of the foam mats and wanted those specifically
I actually watch the old tutorial on almost a weekly basis because I am currently working on the concept for a pair of platforms... good thing that I havn't started working on the actual shoes yet :)
The new one is way easier
guess i got here too late to try to warn you. wood is gonna be more sturdy than foam and you'll have more support and be less likely to sprain an ankle. but how did the foam turn out for you?
Awesome hint Ted! As always I'm glad I subscribed to your channel ^_^. Greetings from an Italian fan ^^
Thank you for watching and subscribing from Italy
Hey Ted! I wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your videos! They actually helped me realize that prop making is what I wanna do when I get older.
Anyways, I love to go all out for Halloween and all, and this year I'd love to add bat wings onto my costume but I'm not sure how to go about it. Do you think you could make a wearable bat wing tutorial one day? Much love! ♡
Can’t wait to try this for my freddy vs jason ( jason voorhees) cosplay boots , been looking everywhere for chunky platform boots but this helped out alot
Cool video. Good to know some new techniques! (Hellfire Zombie)
Hello there Hellfire.
Great video Ted! Cross-fade transitions are not needed.
Now to use this to substitute my medical heel lift in my bad leg! Thanks!
Thank you for subscribing.
@@EvilTedSmith thanks for the video! Lol you just saved me $500 dollars
That's so ironic you made this video. I had an idea to do this for my work boots with a kitchen standing mat.
OMG thank you
Thank you for subscribing.
The 80s are back baby!
I love your channel and I am getting into cosplay with my kids. I was looking for some barge cement and noticed they had toluene free blend, I think that is the fumes part, does that change its effectiveness?
Very cool and easy to do! Do you think you'll ever make bigger armored boots or shoes, like for a Megaman-style costume?
Hi Mr. Smith! How should one finished the edges of the shoe? Should you paint them or wrap them in fabric? Thanks!
I’ve never tried this yet but I have an idea that I would use a rubber appearing sealant. I was thinking black flex seal to make a flexible water tight side to my platform shoes
Is it possible to take the foam off later to either reduce the height or just use it as normal boots?
Hey Ted, quick question. Wouldn't you want there to be openings in the wrapping? I was under the impression that the epoxy goop needs to dry to cure properly.
Hey, Ted! I have a 3" yoga block I would like to mimic your tutorial with. Do you think it's possible to achieve? I worry because there's only one point of strength/weakness. I need 6" for a cosplay I am doing. Thank you!
did you end up doing it? did it work?
I feel like this would work even better than EVA foam. More solid and there's no seam for the sole to potentially peel apart on
Wow, it's great.
How high are these shoes? Are they comfortable to wear for a whole day?
Fun idea! I would love to try this sometime to make rainbow platform sneakers. Also,I saw some sneakers with rainbow gel heels and I would like to do a diy but don't have any idea how. They are on ebay and this is the name: New Men Casual Sport Shoes Running Jogging Trainer Breathable Sneakers Rainbow. They are red. I hope you can help. Thanks.
Thanks.
So I just watched these and the V1 build. With both builds in mind, I have two questions.
Firstly, can you still dress the Polyurethane foam with EVA foam? If so, would contact cement or this Goop stuff work better?
Second, if I decide to do a faint heel arch on the foam pieces that touch the floor, would it be better to do the heel and flat parts of the foot separate before adding the neoprene? or would having too separate pieces like that compromise the integrity of the build??
I was wondering how tall are the platforms possible to make with this method because I was working on a Ballsack the jaws of death costume and it has these big hooves as legs and I've never made stilts so I was thinking since they were not that gigantic to just make big platforms like the the method u used in this vid just ad one more piece of foam on top
Hey, i love your videos and they helping me a lot but i wanted to ask you if you could do a video where you work with fabrics like leder or something too. Oh and i was at the ComicCon germany and your performance was realy cool. :)
I'm not a sewer but I'm sure someone here on UA-cam is.
Okay, just wanted to ask. :)
Just a suggestion, but you should make a template or tutorial for Tachanka from rainbow six siege
Really cool! Thank you. I need to make one of my pair of shoes really tall for Halloween so I look 6 foot and not 5 foot, lol
You can do it!
This is great. But I am trying to find out how to make a pair of later boots LOWER! I don;t care if I off them up because they are so high I would just discard them. Just wondering what kind of saw blade to use! I LOVE the uppers but I it would be awesome to use them at flats. I was always to tall for them!
I'm not sure how I would do that? That would suggest going to a shoe repair shop and asking them.
Post video of you spraining your ankle
I love tutti fruit make-up and I love to walk-on with Jesus with my foam plataforma shows of Cradle of Filth metal head-bangging film!
hey! i love this video, it’s great :) i wanted to ask, would this method would work for making platform heels? thanks!!
I'm not sure... Let me know how it works out.
So I am just wondering...*only* glue? What are the chances of it coming apart? I think the gluing to the bottom of the shoe is what gives me pause.
For the EVA foam version, do you have any suggestions for making the sides look smoother and nicer?
Yes once you stack them together wrap the sides with 2mm foam to hide the seams.
Are these for actual walking or just for props? Many of mine fall apart so I am considering making my own. I can get a thick industrial grade foam 4in. Or is multiple foams better? Still looking into which glue is actually the strongest.
The two-inch EVA foam works great.
I'm look for a vid that has cheap supplies and is easy I found it
Thank you! That’s my mission is to show people they can do cool stuff that won’t cost a lot of money.
You're saving me. I'm gonna visit my host brothers and I won't be shorter than them!
Happy to help.
Woudnt thease crush under your weight after so long? I havw to make platforms for a musical show and they have to be worn for 2 hours for 3 nights. They also have to be about 6 in tall. They must also be safe. Should I go with the wooden ones?
You can use EVA foam as well. I made 4 inch boots for may Sister of Battle cosplay.
Can you use a lasercutter instead of a bandsaw?
I’m not sure? I’ve never cut anything this thick with a laser cutter.
can the bottom handle hot surfaces like a sidewalk on a hot summers day?
Yes!
what is the name of the shoes you used?
do you think contact cement would work well for holding the foam together?
Yes, Thats what I use to glue foam together.
Whats a good alternative to Goop? I cant find it here at my hardware stores. Would contact adhesive/shoe glue work?
I'm not sure because I've never used it. You can buy Goop on Amazon.
Evil Ted Smith its basically barge cement, but more transparent. About the same adhesive strength as well.
What always that rubber you used for soles?
Just some rubber sheet I had in the shop.
Hey Ted, which adhesive is stronger for making platform shoes? E6000 or Goop?
Not sure? I've never used E6000 but heard great things about it.
Is is possible to add a lug sole to a flat sole boot?
I don't see why not?
they look a bit squishy, i can probably use other kinda of foam tho so long as theyre light right?
Yeah they were a bit too squishy, So I made another pair using EVA foam.
What kind of polyurethane foam is this? Also does it deflate as you wear them over time??
Yeah it will over time. I made my second pair using EVA foam.
i love u ted smith i hope my date likes my platforms omg
I'm sure he will.
How can I smooth it out so that it looks less like I glued a bunch of foam on the bottom of my shoe? Lol
Yes, wrap it in 2 or 4mm Eva foam.
I'm gonna give this a shot with thrift store boots, I own actual demonia boots, but the platform has pulled off the heel a second time, I only have 10mm floor mats, could they work? Or is the polyurethane foam better? Was also wondering if you could make shoe lift insoles for shoes to add more height if you want to wear ordinary shoes but be taller
Yeah, I found out it's better to use EVA foam. The polyurethane foam ended up being too soft over time.
@@EvilTedSmith Thank you for responding! I will definitely give it a shot with floor mats and let you know what happens, the shoe lifts do work great too, just gotta get used to them
about ur demonias i think u could either buy shoe glue stuff or get them took to a shoe repair shop idk lol
Would it be possible to do this with Eva foam?
Yes, and I would be even better. That foam I used ended up being to soft over time.
Can I use contact cement?
You can but the Goop will hold better over time!
what type of foam and goop did you use
I have the list just below the video.
Me:can I use EVA foam?🤨
The exact moment in the vid:You can also use EVA foam✨
Me:👁👁gud…
what's the maximum height you can add to the shoes?
I don't go over 6 inches.
Hihi! So, Fun fact: When you're done, adding duct tape is possibly ur smartest soulution with them not falling off lmao
Sorry, I don't understand your question?
i wanted to ask, are those foam platforms okay to walk on like platforms that are bought in stores?
I believe so. They haven't given me any trouble.
Thank you ☺️
CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON HOW TO MAKE A FOAM POWER RANGER HELMET TO HELP ME OUT PLEASE
I made a video on how to make a helmet. I's up to you to make it into a Power Ranger helmet.
Evil Ted Smith Ted's helmet videos are great. Excellent tutorial on helmet making!
Hey Ted! We met at the airport in Stuttgart at the Lost & Found place.
Did you manage to get your luggage in time? I just spoke to the airport and I'm gonna pick up my bag today :)
Ohh... And remember you gave me your UA-cam name? Seems like I didn't need it because I was already subscribing to you :P I thought I recognized the name haha
Hello. Yes I got my luaggae on Saturday. Thank you for subscribing.
I got massive platform foam shoes and i really want to cut them shorter because they are to big so ill never wear them
I'm not really sure how I would do that. I should talk to a cobber.
How do these hold up? Will they last a while or does the foam break down quickly?
I can't say for sure, but have worked with the materials... think how long thin flip flops hold up? I'd say they'd hold up pretty good for costume or even repeat performance.
would this work for adding height to high heels, with seperate foam cutouts for the heel and toe?
Im a haunt actor. I'm a bit nervous about the polyurethane foam coming off as I run around. You sure it will hold???
You can use EVA foam instead!
@@EvilTedSmith I have tried buying foam off amazon twice and in both orders, the foam was waaay too soft. Almost the consistency of memory foam in a pillow.
I want to just say, can you be my dad? You're awesome! I love your videos!
I'll be your Foam Dad.
Evil Ted Smith foam daddy
trying to do this so I can make a lady dimitrescu costume. I'm only 5'3 so it suuuuuucks being so short
Most all of Hollywood stars are short. So don't be hard on your self.
@@EvilTedSmith oh dang! I didn't know that! Thank you! I feel a bit better, but still kind of upset lol!
With these platforms and the white foam on your shoe covers someone must be making some Pee Wee Herman Big Shoe Dance footwear.
I would probably use the wood version for that. Tipping up on your toes would be hard with the foam.
Do you mean orthopedic
Good stuff Evil Ted,you stay with something fresh I really appreciate you and hope I can be half as good as you some day.if you get a minute please check out my highlite reel on my channel, will have more vids soon I need to edit vids.Have a Happy 4th of july.Dueces(peace)
Thank you very much. Keep building, and that someday will come.
Has anyone tried this out and actually walked around a con?
I did, The only thing I would change now is use 2 inch EVA foam instead of the foam I used.
hello lgbtq community 😼✌🏻
Damn... Us poor gays who can't afford demonias really just be watching this video huh😭
Oh God the mic pick up so much static I can't watch
in my opinion it is definitely NOT an improvement. if i wanted cheap shoes that were gonna bend and sprain my ankle I would just glue some flip flops together. I came to your chanel because I saw your QUALITY platform boots that were gonna support my weight and stay together while not bending and making me fall. but this? garbage.
