@@wpbn5613for me, the first record featured fantastic, unique production, full of new and fun ideas. The lyrics were...okay, but they definitely came together to form a very cohesive project. The instrumentals though...THE INSTRUMENTALS THOUGH. I never get through a listen of the record without noticing a new weird, unconventional sound thats been used.
The opposite is true for HTE. It's all over the place structurally, without a very obvious production theme, and its production just... isn't that unique. Its great, sure, but its just nothing special. But its high point are the lyrics, which are a MASSIVE approvement to WWAFAWDWG, where the lyrics were kinda...one dimentional, without any important ideas to really say. Some very emotional and playful lyrics, sure, but nothing I'd rave about. HTE is the complete opposite, addressing many social issues, having very well-written lyrics, I could go on and on and on.
I definitely prefer the production feat that was When We All Fall Asleep and okay-ish lyrics over the...unspecial production and fantastic lyrics on HTE, but thats just me.

      Eh.
It is undoubtedly a good album. The grudge and Get him back are my favourites atp but it lacks something. I cannot explain what. Idk relatability maybe?
Like she's reaching out to an audience far beyond and far narrow. Sour wasn't like this.
If you compare this to other artists like her(storytellers) for example Adele and Swift. Both their sophomore albums weren't only better and grander, they were highly grounded.
21 was bomb. One of the best in the decade. Fearless had great hits, charted for a LONG time. Songs like Rolling in the deep, White horse, Love story are what propel these albums. Guts is lacking in that sense.

To an extent the title track alone justifies Happier Than Ever for me, to see Billie really reach into such a different part of herself musically was such a breath of fresh air - I feel so glad that I heard that track as part of the album with no prior warning because it really blew me away. But on top of that it felt like even if you could argue that the standard "Billie Eilish" sound was done better on [whatever the fuck that essay of a debut album title was called], I found the smaller deviations more interesting than a lot of the similar sounding songs on the debut - tracks like Billie Bossa Nova and Goldwing stick with me more than most tracks from the debut outside of, like, Bad Guy and ilomilo. Again, I don't know a damned wretched thing about production so maybe there's a legitimacy to the preference for the debut, but I enjoy Happier Than Ever more, personally.
Also "Your Power" is just such an amazing gut punch of emotion.

One thing about Show Your Bones that I think is worth mentioning here is that (if I’m not mistaken) Karen O was intentionally trying to distance herself from the sexualized wild-girl-drinking-beer-on-stage image people had of on her in their early days, which probably resulted in them going for a more gentle and folksy sound. Still a solid follow up even if lacks the same raw firepower of FTT imo

@@dazman1972 I do like Alanis, but the thing is:
I usually think that with artists who have an album as good as Jagged Little Pill, it's a must to check out their other work: at least 95% of the time an artist has one universally loved album like, say, Titanic Rising or TPAB, that their other stuff is worth checking out, that they have at least one or two other must-listens in their discography.
In Alanis' case, I honestly think it would be perfectly fine to only listen to Jagged Little Pill and not pay mind to any of her other work. Yes, there's some other Alanis stuff aside from JLP that I really like, but I couldn't fault anyone for not getting into it.
If there was a competition for "biggest gap in quality between an artist's best work and next best work" for all artists ever, Alanis would be one of the top candidates to win.

I disagree with the Third Eye Blind record being a sophomore slump since I do believe the most of songs are pretty good (it’s when you get to Out of the Vein where the band begins to fall out of grace) and it sold a decent amount of records to where I can say it’s a pretty solid record in their discography. (Plus, I do appreciate the compliment of calling them an iconic alternative rock band since I think they’re underrated especially with that debut)

FtT has the rawness that's exciting and some beautiful moments but SYB is more crafted and ultimately more satisfying in my opinion.

Billie Eilish stands out so oddly in this list, such a sea difference between the 90s-00s albums you named and her record, especially just to basically call it "only slightly disappointing". Billie hasn't even been around long enough to show us the significance of Happier than Ever, and you named it after calling The Clash's sophomore important for transitioning to London Calling.

While I agree Happier than Ever didn't fully live up to When we all Fall Asleep's level, it's still a good album that had some good moments like Happier than Ever, Goldwing, NDA & Therefore I am

    • @shambhav9534
      @shambhav9534 10 місяців тому

You have to ask this question: can you ever match the level of When we fall asleep where do you we? Making a good album is about talent and work, but making a great album also has a level of luck involved. Everything must go just right for such albums.
I don't even think Happier Than Ever is a worse album. It's kind of a different musical style, and it might not have hit the right bells for people. My personal opinion is that the production style kind of just falls apart here. A lot of the songs just need a bit of heaviness. Although the songs themselves are great, the singing and production isn't able to showcase that fully. Covers of a lot of the songs from the album were unexpectedly good, when you look at Billie's records. Still the actual record was better because the songs were written for her, but I just see some missing potential

Had no idea Show Yor Bones was slump. I was a young kid when i first got into Yeah Yeah Yeahs and just loved it to death. Happier Than Ever is just as good as WWAFAWDWG, but I think it got less attention, so I guess Fantano is right.

I like Third Eye Blind, and overall I like Blue, but it probably does deserve to be on this list. "Never Let You Go" was ok as a hit, but not as good as any of the hits from their debut, plus most of the back half of the record is kind of forgettable.
