Hey, as a fan for quite a while now, may I offer a piece of feedback on thumbnails? In general when I see your thumbnails in my recommended, they make me doubt whether it's a new video, or a old one I've already seen that's being served up to me again. It's because the thumbnails are pretty low resolution, use a lot of graphic elements (and especially text/logos) for current trends, use mostly washed out colors in the background, and generally don't show a thing that is "new to this video" (although cool tools is a bit of an exception to this last one). My understanding is that recommended is where a lot of people get their videos nowadays, so it seemed important enough to bring this up, even if not directly related to this video specifically. Hope this helps, i love the channel, keep up the good work!
As a not-expert carpenter it can be hard to be discerning when it comes to product recommendations here on UA-cam. I can only imagine the pressure you must get from manufacturers given your large audience who respects and trusts you. I had been looking for a pocket hole jig and wasn’t very enthusiastic about the Blue Plastic one, and now within 48 hours of watching this video I have in hand this gorgeous METAL Enjoywood jig. It was an almost brainless decision and now I can spend my few remaining brain cells building cabinets, and with the cost savings over the Kreg model I bought the mallet too. Thanks!!
i love Milescraft. i used their portable pocket hole jig for years (until i had a large project that made a getting a bigger jig more time efficient). loved it and served me well

I bought the Joint Master right after watching this. It’s a terrific tool with a lot of flexibility. But my heart still belongs to my Stanley No 59 dowel jig.
I can vouch for the miles craft dowel jig being a quality item. I love it. I also just recently bought the Taylor vertical vertical bench clamp and it rocks! Why did I wait so long to buy one? I’m going to get another soon.
I took a chance on the Milescraft dowel jig and am quite pleased with its versatility. Just make sure that you use it correctly. Make sure you tighten the clamp side of the jig on the correct side of each board before drilling so that your mating boards align smoothly.
Similar to digital gauge i purchased the mcls pro lift a number of years ago. It's got both a foot pedal to raise and lower plus Bluetooth app that allows repeatable cuts. Love it and then last year added incra fence system and because incra goofed on table size they sent me large table for same cost as smaller. I really can't say enough about the combination of the two systems. Really wonderful. If looking to invest in router table lift system check it out, was worth the price at least 3-4 years ago
You don’t know how much I love this rough bench that you have. To me, it looks like something I would do - to use and abuse. My uncle had an old bench that he never used anything to secure, just nails and pieces of wood to hold his workpieces. I’ve never done something like that… but it seems liberating.
That dowelling jig looks very smart - I recently used a cheap plastic jig to drill some cross dowels as part of a repair and, whilst it got the job done, it was not a pleasure to use and I spent 3x more than the jig on extra clamps to keep everything aligned and square.
I don't know if you'd be interested in this, but it'd be really sweet if we could get a massive cool tools video covering different budgets and skill levels for the holiday season. A lot of the tools you cover are just too expensive or require other tools not everyone has

CBN wheels in a production shop last 5 or so years. My last efforts with friable wheels, I got less than 6 months. I have been using them for over 10 years now. Like you said, I will never go back to standard wheels again.

Bluetooth earpro is an absolute must. Being able to listen to music or podcasts while doing things makes you much more inclined to use hearing protection. I dont have that brand but since getting myself a set i use my ear pro much much more. Even while doing things where i would otherwise not use ear pro but probably should like mowing my lawn, running a chainsaw, or even long stints of vacuuming.
Hello James, I'm a big fan and have purchased a couple of your "Cool Tools" picks in the past. I've wanted to upgrade my router table for a while and was excited to see the Bora 3.25 HP motor available. But when I read the Amazon reviews got spooked. The reviews appeared to be from pro shops so I paid attention. Their assessment was not good, one star! You may want to contact the Bora folks and get to the bottom of the the criticisms. You have a great reputation as a "honest broker" so I wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks for all your work over the years keeping the woodworking community informed.
I'm a big Bridge City fan and have many of their products, including a Jointmaster Pro V2. However, the last square I bought from them was around 5 degrees out of square. That caused me a lot of problems until I realized why. It was very disappointing, but you can't trust even the most expensive brands, apparently. Always check new tools for square, folks ! Oh, and I bought a Tormek Sharpening system, so there's not much point in the CBN wheels for me.
You're rum 'un James, and no mistake. That wee joke from 9:17 to 9:25 properly cracked me up. Joking aside, I started placing an order, but stopped when it was going to cost me almost exactly the same to ship as to buy doubling the cost. I'll still go ahead if I can't adapt some sort of DRO locally. Just one question regards it giving repeatability. You would need to bottom the bit in the collet for that work. I know some folk prefer to lift the bit just a fraction to reduce heat transfer. I can't make my mind up how valid that is. I am sure that the collet will hold the bit without it moving - metal lathe collets have a massive end load on them without the workpiece slipping. I have been using my ISOtunes ear defenders more just recently. I still can't wear them for hours on end, but they are effective and OK for a hour or two.
You don't bottom the bit in the collet. you install it as you normally would, then raise it so the tip is flush with the table top. Zero the DRO out there with a push of a button.
What I love about it is the accuracy. For example I had a project for some large built in cabinets where i needed to join two sections of plywood about 60" long. I used the Dowelmax to put dowels along the length, probably about 10-12. It fit like a glove. The seam is invisible. The best part is that I did not even need to measure, just butt up against the end of board then use the step & repeat of the jig.
Woodworking season? Interesting. I was just thinking I need to hurry up and get all my last minute projects done because it's getting too cold for woodworking. Not to mention dark too early (especially after next week with the time change).
bought a milescraft drill press attachment for your regular drill for cutting holes in glass. a piece was missing from the package. contacted them, shipped me out the little thing immediately. i like milescraft.
That doweling jig looks really good, especially because the one I have (the excellent one from Banggood featured on Hooked on Wood) is incredibly good for doing edge and 90º joinery, but doesn't allow me to easily put together legs and aprons for a table or bench. The Dowelmax would be perfect for that, but it's impossible for me to buy in my country. The new Jessem one I could manage, but it would be incredibly expensive and the metric version hasn't been released yet. I can get the jig from this video, though, and it would be much more affordable for me. Can anyone weigh in on whether or not this one is comparable to the Dowelmax or the Jessem?
So years ago you promoted the Ready2Route system which had digital adjustments for both the fence in the lift. You could duplicate any setup and repeat it exactly and save it to memory if you used that setup often. Do you still have that Ready2Route system and ever use it? I bought one many years ago after seeing your video recommending it and I love it. The accuracy is beyond anything else out there and I use it all the time!
I am just a hobbyist but I have mine mounted on a Rockler router table bolted to a moveable stand and it works great for me. The lift and fence have all the room they need to move. The new one is a whole lot more expensive then the ready2route and doesn't look like it does anything different?
There really should be a PSA at the beginning or end of these videos that tells people how to contact Tool Buyers Anonymous for those of us that have a problem.
I know this is a subjective view but I like the new hair cut. I personally believe how we present ourselves is a tool in life and a hair cut can make a big difference. A well defined haircut will present an yourself as someone who is respected and experienced. We all know you know what you are talking about but it’s that extra one percent that really rounds out the package. In no way do I want you to think in disrespecting your old style, I only mean to imply that I feel you have a more mature look to you and it’s something that I noticed first thing when watching this video.

just got my first Bridge City square in the mail today!! (I got the 6" double square) I love the weight of it and I can't wait to use it to finish up a project this weekend! Thought I was kind of surprised at how shallow the laser etchings are. I know you've been using yours for ages, have you seen any signs of wear on yours?? I'm assuming they hold up fine since you're still working them though lol
I inherited my dad's who used it for a few years and I've used it since his passing for 7 years and it hasn't been an issue at all. I also have a newer one and the etching is just as deep as the older one so shouldn't be an issue
James - I also own a Sjobergs bench. The biggest issue is the larger dog holes that don’t work with 3/4” items. So frustrating and I noticed in your vid that you showcase all those hold down items on a different bench. What all do you use on your bench? I just end up making stuff for the 1” holes.
I have 1-inch dogs and holdfasts for my Sjobergs bench. They are quite expensive (Sjobergs brand, you can find them on Amazon). I have considered adding a row of 3/4" holes in the benchtop, but I haven't had the nerve to do it, yet.
I just bought Milescraft Joint Master Dowel Jig but to I have to return it since the Milescraft 1332 Joint Mate works better for me. If you do more of surface or corner joints, it may be for you. But for me that uses edge to edge more, Joint master is less efficient that the Joint Mate. To make an edge to edge on Joint master you need to align the boards and make pencil lines. in Joint mate I can make joints without pencil marking the joints. I was hoping to upgrade to Joint master because of its better built, but for now I will stick to my Joint mate. I was dismayed that they made a product that it is not better than the old one.
I have tried two of the Milescraft dowel jigs that you showed. Unfortunately, both jigs had different issues that caused issues with accuracy. It is really close to being a great value, but from my experience it misses the mark with quality and precision.
I agree, I tried this jig, and I can't get properly alignment, and saw many people complaining about the same issue. I had more success with another simpler dowel from taytools, also suggested by this channel.

Having a difficult time aligning the Kodiak jig to the CBN wheel per the setup instructions (at different tilts the squareness changes), and the tool holder doesn't span the width of any blade. Thought I saw you briefly using a different tool holder in a previous video, but WTW didn't seem to have anything similar-looking on their site. Can you talk about actually getting set up square for grinding the primary bevel on a chisel or plane blade with Kodiak?
I have and use the Kodiak system. It should not change in relation to the wheel when you tilt it. I would contact WTW about it. They are wonderful people that will help you out.

Anyone know how the, "Router Lift Digital Read-out", keeps consistent readings across bit changes? Stumpy used that as an example. I'm wondering how the bit position in the collet is accounted for.
After you install the bit you will raise the router so that the bit's tip is flush with the table top- zero inches above the table. There is a "zero" button on the DRO that resets the display at that point and it will measure any movement up or down from there.
Maybe I'm being dense here... with the Router Lift Digital Read-out, it looks like it helps when you need to sneak up and adjust the height by a small amount, though my router lift (JessEm) already has micro-fraction adjustments, and as I recall, most router lifts already have very precise, micro adjustments. The other area I see this as having potential is repeatable cuts (meaning, make a cut, record the height, and then months or years later when you go and make the project again, look up the height and then set the router's height)... well, the readout records the height of the lift, not the router bit, and the height of the bit varies each time you insert and tighten it into the router (at lest, for me), so I don't see this tool helping out in this area. The digital read out looks cool, but I'm missing the practical usefulness of it. Or, maybe I'm being dense and not seeing something here.
When you install any bit, you raise it up until the tip is even with the table top (zero inches high), then you press a button on the DRO to set it to zero. It will then accurately tell you how much you raise and lower the bit, no matter how it was installed in the collet.
Love your videos. However, I don’t understand your router profile example. If you take a router bit out of the collet, how can you be sure to reinstall it at the same height? I’ve always thought the bit should be set a little off the bottom of the collet. Thus, I can’t be sure the bit is in the same place in the collet. What am I missing here?
I don't understand how the router table digital readout will help you get repeatable results from one setup to another. If you never removed the router bit, that would make sense. But every time you install a router bit, it's not going to be at the same depth in the collet. I'm assuming you don't bottom out the router bit shaft in the router. it's my understanding that's a bad practice because then the collet may not be able to clamp down completely.
When you install a new bit, you raise it until the tip is level with the top of the table (use a straight edge as a bridge) and then zero out the DRO with a press of a button. It only takes seconds.

Expendables are a great super low-budget gift item for woodworkers. I know I could never have too many chip brushes, sand papers, saw blades, etc.
I include tools for multiple budgets in every episode, and I do three episodes at the end of the year.

Bluetooth earpro is an absolute must. Being able to listen to music or podcasts while doing things makes you much more inclined to use hearing protection.
I dont have that brand but since getting myself a set i use my ear pro much much more. Even while doing things where i would otherwise not use ear pro but probably should like mowing my lawn, running a chainsaw, or even long stints of vacuuming.
I have this one, really nice, I built a bed frame with it for all small rails.

Hello James, I'm a big fan and have purchased a couple of your "Cool Tools" picks in the past. I've wanted to upgrade my router table for a while and was excited to see the Bora 3.25 HP motor available. But when I read the Amazon reviews got spooked. The reviews appeared to be from pro shops so I paid attention. Their assessment was not good, one star! You may want to contact the Bora folks and get to the bottom of the the criticisms. You have a great reputation as a "honest broker" so I wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks for all your work over the years keeping the woodworking community informed.
The reviews are from the older version. But if you have reservations, follow your instincts. It's a big purchase.

I'm a big Bridge City fan and have many of their products, including a Jointmaster Pro V2. However, the last square I bought from them was around 5 degrees out of square. That caused me a lot of problems until I realized why. It was very disappointing, but you can't trust even the most expensive brands, apparently. Always check new tools for square, folks !
Oh, and I bought a Tormek Sharpening system, so there's not much point in the CBN wheels for me.

You're rum 'un James, and no mistake. That wee joke from 9:17 to 9:25 properly cracked me up. Joking aside, I started placing an order, but stopped when it was going to cost me almost exactly the same to ship as to buy doubling the cost. I'll still go ahead if I can't adapt some sort of DRO locally. Just one question regards it giving repeatability. You would need to bottom the bit in the collet for that work. I know some folk prefer to lift the bit just a fraction to reduce heat transfer. I can't make my mind up how valid that is. I am sure that the collet will hold the bit without it moving - metal lathe collets have a massive end load on them without the workpiece slipping. I have been using my ISOtunes ear defenders more just recently. I still can't wear them for hours on end, but they are effective and OK for a hour or two.
You don't bottom the bit in the collet. you install it as you normally would, then raise it so the tip is flush with the table top. Zero the DRO out there with a push of a button.

For dowels you simply cannot beat the DowelMax. I love mine.
It is the best one out there, but out of a lot of people's budgets.
What I love about it is the accuracy. For example I had a project for some large built in cabinets where i needed to join two sections of plywood about 60" long. I used the Dowelmax to put dowels along the length, probably about 10-12. It fit like a glove. The seam is invisible. The best part is that I did not even need to measure, just butt up against the end of board then use the step & repeat of the jig.
Woodworking season? Interesting. I was just thinking I need to hurry up and get all my last minute projects done because it's getting too cold for woodworking. Not to mention dark too early (especially after next week with the time change).
Too cold for lacquer, anyway.

That doweling jig looks really good, especially because the one I have (the excellent one from Banggood featured on Hooked on Wood) is incredibly good for doing edge and 90º joinery, but doesn't allow me to easily put together legs and aprons for a table or bench.
The Dowelmax would be perfect for that, but it's impossible for me to buy in my country. The new Jessem one I could manage, but it would be incredibly expensive and the metric version hasn't been released yet. I can get the jig from this video, though, and it would be much more affordable for me. Can anyone weigh in on whether or not this one is comparable to the Dowelmax or the Jessem?

So years ago you promoted the Ready2Route system which had digital adjustments for both the fence in the lift. You could duplicate any setup and repeat it exactly and save it to memory if you used that setup often. Do you still have that Ready2Route system and ever use it? I bought one many years ago after seeing your video recommending it and I love it. The accuracy is beyond anything else out there and I use it all the time!
I still have it, but I don't have a router table that the plate will fit into anymore. I have considered getting their new version to try out, though.
I am just a hobbyist but I have mine mounted on a Rockler router table bolted to a moveable stand and it works great for me. The lift and fence have all the room they need to move. The new one is a whole lot more expensive then the ready2route and doesn't look like it does anything different?

I know this is a subjective view but I like the new hair cut. I personally believe how we present ourselves is a tool in life and a hair cut can make a big difference. A well defined haircut will present an yourself as someone who is respected and experienced. We all know you know what you are talking about but it’s that extra one percent that really rounds out the package. In no way do I want you to think in disrespecting your old style, I only mean to imply that I feel you have a more mature look to you and it’s something that I noticed first thing when watching this video.

I‘m interested in the Isotune hearing protection, but I‘d need some specific sound blocked and some other specific sounds not blocked… (I‘m working with trains and there are some loud sound, that should be blocked and some other sounds, warning me from danger, so they shouldn’t be blocked)

just got my first Bridge City square in the mail today!! (I got the 6" double square) I love the weight of it and I can't wait to use it to finish up a project this weekend! Thought I was kind of surprised at how shallow the laser etchings are. I know you've been using yours for ages, have you seen any signs of wear on yours?? I'm assuming they hold up fine since you're still working them though lol
I inherited my dad's who used it for a few years and I've used it since his passing for 7 years and it hasn't been an issue at all. I also have a newer one and the etching is just as deep as the older one so shouldn't be an issue
Bridge city squares are the rolls Royce of squares. In price atleast lol
No signs of wear on any of mine. The etching is comparable to my Starrett.

James - I also own a Sjobergs bench. The biggest issue is the larger dog holes that don’t work with 3/4” items. So frustrating and I noticed in your vid that you showcase all those hold down items on a different bench. What all do you use on your bench? I just end up making stuff for the 1” holes.
I have 1-inch dogs and holdfasts for my Sjobergs bench. They are quite expensive (Sjobergs brand, you can find them on Amazon). I have considered adding a row of 3/4" holes in the benchtop, but I haven't had the nerve to do it, yet.
I just bought Milescraft Joint Master Dowel Jig but to I have to return it since the Milescraft 1332 Joint Mate works better for me. If you do more of surface or corner joints, it may be for you. But for me that uses edge to edge more, Joint master is less efficient that the Joint Mate. To make an edge to edge on Joint master you need to align the boards and make pencil lines. in Joint mate I can make joints without pencil marking the joints. I was hoping to upgrade to Joint master because of its better built, but for now I will stick to my Joint mate. I was dismayed that they made a product that it is not better than the old one.
I have tried two of the Milescraft dowel jigs that you showed. Unfortunately, both jigs had different issues that caused issues with accuracy. It is really close to being a great value, but from my experience it misses the mark with quality and precision.
I agree, I tried this jig, and I can't get properly alignment, and saw many people complaining about the same issue. I had more success with another simpler dowel from taytools, also suggested by this channel.
BTW, I meant to say that I am a big fan of this channel and look forward to the oracles wisdom!

Having a difficult time aligning the Kodiak jig to the CBN wheel per the setup instructions (at different tilts the squareness changes), and the tool holder doesn't span the width of any blade. Thought I saw you briefly using a different tool holder in a previous video, but WTW didn't seem to have anything similar-looking on their site. Can you talk about actually getting set up square for grinding the primary bevel on a chisel or plane blade with Kodiak?
I have and use the Kodiak system. It should not change in relation to the wheel when you tilt it. I would contact WTW about it. They are wonderful people that will help you out.

Anyone know how the, "Router Lift Digital Read-out", keeps consistent readings across bit changes? Stumpy used that as an example. I'm wondering how the bit position in the collet is accounted for.
You zero out the bit with the table top and then zero the read-out. This makes it repeatable. The devices work very well.
After you install the bit you will raise the router so that the bit's tip is flush with the table top- zero inches above the table. There is a "zero" button on the DRO that resets the display at that point and it will measure any movement up or down from there.
That Milescraft does not include the drill bits?
They don't include the drill, either.
Maybe I'm being dense here... with the Router Lift Digital Read-out, it looks like it helps when you need to sneak up and adjust the height by a small amount, though my router lift (JessEm) already has micro-fraction adjustments, and as I recall, most router lifts already have very precise, micro adjustments. The other area I see this as having potential is repeatable cuts (meaning, make a cut, record the height, and then months or years later when you go and make the project again, look up the height and then set the router's height)... well, the readout records the height of the lift, not the router bit, and the height of the bit varies each time you insert and tighten it into the router (at lest, for me), so I don't see this tool helping out in this area. The digital read out looks cool, but I'm missing the practical usefulness of it. Or, maybe I'm being dense and not seeing something here.
When you install any bit, you raise it up until the tip is even with the table top (zero inches high), then you press a button on the DRO to set it to zero. It will then accurately tell you how much you raise and lower the bit, no matter how it was installed in the collet.

Love your videos. However, I don’t understand your router profile example. If you take a router bit out of the collet, how can you be sure to reinstall it at the same height? I’ve always thought the bit should be set a little off the bottom of the collet. Thus, I can’t be sure the bit is in the same place in the collet. What am I missing here?
You raise the bit flush with the table and zero the display out at that point.
I don't understand how the router table digital readout will help you get repeatable results from one setup to another. If you never removed the router bit, that would make sense. But every time you install a router bit, it's not going to be at the same depth in the collet. I'm assuming you don't bottom out the router bit shaft in the router. it's my understanding that's a bad practice because then the collet may not be able to clamp down completely.
When you install a new bit, you raise it until the tip is level with the top of the table (use a straight edge as a bridge) and then zero out the DRO with a press of a button. It only takes seconds.
