I love the bass lines in that song. This is just the intro though. I would like to learn the entire song. There's a lot of cool change ups that are done in it if you listen closely. THANKS FOR SHARING! 👍😎👍

Sorry, but there is a mistake in your demonstration. Coming down from the Eb, the scale is Eb-D-C-Bb-A, and not Eb-D-C-G#-A. Check it out.

A couple days ago I had the TV on a classic TV channel an "Barney Miller" came on. I thought, "Now, how does that bass line go?" So I did a search and this is the first video I opened. So here I am ready to learn the bass riff, and I'm playing a Peavey Cirrus, too! Ha ha!

Don't know how old you are but you ever heard the original tune so different I'm talking earlier 70's....what your playing is the newer barney Miller I mean it's all good..

Can you suggest a decent bass/amp for a beginner? When I say beginner, I mean I know nothing and pretty sure I have no musical talent but it's something I want to try. Thank you.

Most people will tell you that it's all according to personal preference and budget.
There are a lot of good deals on both bass and Amps for beginners.
Personally I'd recommend a combo amp to start with. Pairing the amp with the speakers is going to be cheaper, easier to move about, takes up less space in your house and you really won't need much more for awhile. You can even get built in cabinet models and effects to play with.
Peavey is a decent starting point. Fender/Ampeg also nice choices.
As for the bass. There are tons of choices. Fender Squier is a great beginner bass. Also Ibanes SG series are a solid choice imo. Again, it comes down to what looks and feels good to you. Bare in mind that no matter what bass you choose, I'd recommend taking it down to a music store and having it restrung and set up properly. Often times even a new bass can sound and feel better.
Don't be afraid to look at used bass gear, just research what you are looking at. Hope this helps.

Get a 15 watt Hardt amp.
      You won't be disappointed.

Why not play it in the key of F, as the original is? The key of E is not only harder but doesn't sound like the original.

He did play it in F. He starts the riff with his finger on the first fret of the E string.

Nope, bass player on both sessions was Chuck Berghofer.

No. It's Brian Alsup. Passed away sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. I believe he was hit by a bus somewhere in NYC.

Per Jim Hughart it was Chuck Berghofer. www.talkbass.com/threads/who-played-the-barney-miller-theme.570018/
