I would want to remove those sliding doors from the 2nd bedroom and put a wall up. Then you can extend the livingroom floor right into the corner and get rid of the steps. Much more space for furniture. I also like the open space to the kitchen, if you wanted to put something up I would go with the glass 🙂

I would block that sliding door too Louise those 3-4 little stairs are a waste of space. .

Louise Laird good idea. Put a single door there and wall off where the other side of the slider was

I recommend you extend the steps to the kitchen right across to be level with the wall i.e cut the triangular part where the gates were away. This will open the kitchen space up x

Hi nick and Leigh , it's mark ... I'm actually a builder in south Manchester and Cheshire , I do like the idea of open near the steps , but the balustrade was there to meet building regulations, so if you remove it totally and someone falls in future you could be open to legal action 😕 .... also where the glass sliding doors are into bedroom , why not remove those and get the steps filled in timber and floored , a stud wall with plasterboard on to give you a proper corner to the room , then you could have a corner sofa ? Only an idea ....
me and carol enjoy your vlogs keep them up .

Have you checked building regulations before removing those railings? I believe more than 600mm change in floor level requires a railing/ balustrade etc

With the need for additional storage space, maybe build a wall where the kitchen railing was and add storage cabinets?

I like the idea of creating stairs by the kitchen all the way round so it keeps it open but then it’s not a drop either for someone to hurt themselves or the kids when they come to visit.

  • @magrudergrinder23

You guys should see if you can extend those stairs over to the edge of the wall where the railing used to be. It would also make s more sense for that sliding door to be removed, and then a regular wall/door in its place. Getting rid of that weird overhang on the half wall opposite the downstairs and opposite the kitchen. Flat walls would be much easier to place furniture around.
If you could, it would actually be really nice to remove that kitchen wall entirely and replace it with a frosted glass wall so you can get some natural light inside the kitchen.

  • @djay1066

What do to with the place near the kitchen is, out in a low cabinet with a cushion on top. Instant storage and a little seat so one of you can watch the other cook. Also extra seating for parties

You could get a big plant trough with fake ferns or palms, that way you can just push it back if you want to chat in the kitchen and sit on the little step, but it also creates a partition without putting anything permanent up 😁 x

Whats underneath the lounge floor? I would agree and remove the sliding doors and fill the bedroom wall up, room for a nice sectional sofa then.I would stand a white shelving unit at the side of the kitchen stairs to give both a barrier and extra storage.

Hey boys . Check building regs before going any further . In my experience , builders often don't turn up for little jobs and if they do they charge solicitors wages !! But hopefully yours won't .
Instead of the expense of walls etc , I would buy / build a shelved room partition devider thingy , which you can see through from both angles of the living area and kitchen area and you can put things on and also use for storage , you can build it as high or low as you want and it would stop people from falling off edge .
You could do similar by the bedroom , or just get a nice oblong planter and fill it with green classy plants . And it will also march the lodge !! You would get the benefit of them from living room and bedroom .
Don't know what you've used to paint the walls with , but a roller on a pole would have done the job in 2/3 of the time😍 no wonder you are knackered ! Keep going boys ! 👍👏

    Hi guys!
I would build a small wall with a ledge that you can put some of your lovely bits and bobs on. Perhaps have a narrow floor to ceiling wall attached to it and put some floating shelves in between to create a kind of bookcase that you can put some more of your pictures and ornaments etc
Love watching you both ( first time commenting but have been watching for about 18 months !) keep up the great work 😀😀

What’s under the ‘platform’ the living room is on? Wonder if you could turn the drop to the kitchen into wider steps that go across the entire section... would open up the space and link the two rooms nicely. Although it would probably start getting expensive.

  • @pittpirate1818

I would put up a short wall that is a shelving unit. You could have cubes and then put up shows. So being from the U.S. fixing up an apartment would never be allowed - assume you own or have long term lease. Over here you can do nearly no modifications in an apartment.

  • @rogermadeley7413
    @rogermadeley7413 3 роки тому

You might have to replace the railings with a similar shaped barrier as people could still fall off the edge onto the steps...I would still go for glass panels with polished stainless steel or chrome posts.

  • @budgetingmyway3463

I think glass balustrade where the baby gate railings were would look fab, especially on the mezzanine. I would also put some green indoor plants near the kitchen steps where Leigh sat. I have to say I was a little concerned when Nick said having no railings would be fine. Roll on a few glasses of wine and a zoom party and it could be an accident waiting to happen 😂😂. Loving your vlogs guys.

a game changer would be - maybe move the tv to the wall on the left as you leave the kitchen (might have to move the radiator), under the overhang, then you can have two sofas, one in each window recess - it would make the room look so spacious - also put the dining table upstairs in the office with comfy fabric dining chairs, dual purpose as a desk as well, and then loads of room for the xmas tree!

  • @Bigunit23

Why don’t you add kitchen cupboards that open up into your lounge floor void space. Storage with no downside. You can turn your kitchen wall into internal glass partition. Some led lighting down it, maybe opaque glass. Finally how about a black and white picture mural. You could even use one of your own pictures. That wound look nice on the back wall of the office deck.

Cool apt. Yes railing had to go..it opened up the space. By the odd spot...Is a table going on that side of space? Will there be chairs? Then maybe the clear panel. If no chairs what about a rectangular planter , the length of the spot. Place the artificial long grass 6 across. It adds a little something modern without over powering the space. But then I do like how someone can sit there with glass of wine while you are in kitchen. Listen, once you paint , get in your main furnishings all in its place, then revisit. That spot may not be so prominent and just disappear due to all the furnishings in their place.

  • @tuzanne

I think you don’t need the metal rail to the bedroom but should keep part of the one to the kitchen without the section by the steps. I think a mini wall might still be dangerous, a glass one better.

If you wall off the 2nd bedroom, extend the floor in the living room (covering those stairs) you could also have a small cubby for storage under those stairs that you could access with a little door from that bedroom.
Also, a window in the kitchen wall to open that up and bring in light - taking advantage of the beautiful tall windows. So beautiful.

See others have already mentioned it but you’ll need something in both places to meet building regs and that will have to be of a certain height too so would be worth checking on that before you make any firm decisions. With the look you seem to be going for (like the lodge but slightly different) I’d suggest (safety) glass with brushed chrome framing. I find brushed looks softer than polished and doesn’t show every fingerprint which I’m guessing would drive you crazy. Also if you do go for that wallpaper you were considering on the back office wall, you might want the glass to be clear otherwise it’d distort what you see of it from downstairs. Got a suggestion & obviously only if you haven’t dumped them already but might be worth spray painting a section of the railings in silver/chrome to see if you still hate them. Would change the look and make them look more modern. Just an idea. Might look awful but would be a whole lot easier & save you a fortune.🤷‍♀️
As for the Christmas tree/table debate I’d remember that whilst the table might only be D110cm by the time chairs are round it and pulled out, it’ll take up more room so bear that in mind before you finalise what else to order & whether there’s room for a huge tree. I’d also go slightly smaller on the rug too otherwise you won’t see any of the new flooring you’re splashing out on and with a bit of space around the rug, it will make the area look more spacious rather than crammed in. IMO. Good luck! x
